Is this an impulse decision or not. Can't tell if its the brain or the trauma. Too many parts.
Help! Is this an impulse decision or not. I can't tell if its the brain or the trauma...
NOT US. (Third world country i.e. There is no government support of any kind) This is going to be a long one. I'd appreciate it if you'd read through it, but if you can't
TLDR; My toxic 52h/week with 20+ hours shifts workplace is actively traumatizing me. I have food, housing and utilities covered. I just want to quit so I can focus on building skills to change careers. Is this smart?
Hey guys. Please help me with this. I've been struggling with this. I work in healthcare as a junior doctor. I had a greater than 1 year career gap after graduation and was surprised to be hired to the place I'm currently working as I felt unemployable. It's a dead end job with no progression because I can't pass the exams needed. Some background this is the same hospital where I worked during my graduation.
After a few months of trauma-therapy, about over a year of inner child work, and I've finally discovered why I'm stuck acedemically/professionally. Aside from my cognitive weaknesses this line of work is associated with alot of trauma for me (something I just uncovered in therapy). I've decided I'm ready to change careers. I never had the chance to work through what I liked during my early days so I don't know what would work for me and I want to give myself time to discover and learn so I can actually build a career for myself but I understand that it isn't realistically possible. I found a master's programme that really interested me and will atleast be able to provide me with a stable, well-paying, 9 to 5 if nothing else. In my country pays are shit and no decent jobs unless you have a masters atleast. I need to study for GRE and get a good score if I'm to get in. I need time and low stress in order to be able to manage by executive dysfunction enough to study and with my current job I haven't been able to at all and the entrance test is in two months.
My last shift I had an even more traumatizing experience at work. A new supervisor, in a gathering of about 15 colleagues and students proceeded to call me out regarding my decisions and assessments for appropriately 20 mins in front of the patient's family it wasn't even formal calling out but just literally shit talking me. My senior didn't assess the patient like they had to. (I'm very poor knowledge-wise and haven't been able to cope with it to this day but work hard so am considered a decent worker). They said someone complimented me and I guess they were trying to judge if it was warranted. "you don't know how to do this!?" "you've probably never done this before, have you?" "don't lie to me" " no way she did this" " asks me a question and I reply to the best of my shit knowledge proceeds to make fun of my answer" "where do you think youre going come back here" "don't stand over there stand infront of me" "is your stethoscope old? What brand is it? (implying I'm using a shit one" " laughs I asked you to take it from me why are you coming here?" " referring to group she isn't listening is she?" "looks like you've never done this before" "you need to study" you get the gist. On a sad side note: You know how we're always taking about how our trauma symptoms are defences in childhood I actually experienced it play out in real time when this happened and lol I believe it now. If it wasn't for dissociation I don't know how I would've gone on through the day.
I'm tired. So done. A part of me says just quit immediately and start studying for your masters and focus on building skills for a job. Another part says to not quit until you have another job lined up but the response to that is you've been trying to do this for a while just accept that you're not capable of building skills while also working here with all the trauma work and symptom management you have to do in general and also because of your job so can't build skills and manage symptoms and work and also apply to new places like today hustling worker. I really want this masters and I really want an engaging fruitful career. I'm afraid if I quit ill end up back to the state I was in during my career gap (super suicidal literally the worse mental space I've been in) but another part says you're not the same person anymore. 1 of my two primary abusers doesn't live with me anymore and I have much better symptom control. BUT another part says you'll loose your income and so your super expensive trauma therapist approximately 30% of my salary went into trauma therapy but the results are incredible so I feel it was totally worth it and alot of my salary goes into what I call cptsd-tax. The reply is well you can get into freelance work.
Anyways I'm so unsure and my mind feels like it'll explode. Thoughts? After crying and feeling like shit all day some parts of me are beginning to feel resentful towards me that I keep putting myself in this situation. I'm not in crisis-mode that much I can tell and I'm not fleeing from process which means I'm not in a flight or fight state either. I want to take the risk and quit but I feel like I'm yearning for validation in this decision. As I type this I'm hoping everyone says yeah go quit ASAP but I know logically that won't be the case. I'm so confused but also feel a little certainty that even if I did quit I'd make it somehow. Let me know what you think I'm desperate for support.
Thank you to anyone who read this. I apologise of any formatting issues as I'm on mobile.

Outro + what I might do in the future👀

With that all being said, this completely concludes my super long rewatch series. Once again, thank you to all who actually followed this series at any point! With that being said, I figured I should briefly talk about what I have planned in the future. Well for starters, I still have to continue my poll series. And now that I’ve completed this series, stating my opinions should be even easier now. Also, the new seasons are coming up soon. So I may or may not add onto this series once the episodes air, whether it be doing full-on episode by episode reviews, or just going by the slightly more efficient commentary style I did where I go through a few episodes per post. On top of this, I’ve also recently watched a couple of fanseasons on YT, that being Disventure Camp and Adventure Camp. And I think I have something planned for that
But for now, this is Geo, for the last time in this series, signing off✌️

2023.03.22 11:31 emrygan Help!

2023.03.22 08:01 Notostracant Poetically speaking, a triops kaiju would attack Phoenix, Arizona

Yea, this is completely out of left-field but this is a neat little thought I've had in my mind the past couple days as a Godzilla fan and triops enthusiast. This was probably fueled by me rewatching the Godzilla triops video that I fondly remember watching years ago. I shouldn't need to say this but it is obviously fake, but it is still an entertaining watch that I'm sure many of you have already seen before
Why Phoenix, AZ?
Okay, so if you're still with me you see why Phoenix is this kaiju's own Tokyo. Now we can get to the fun part, which is what characteristics this kaiju would have along with a potential name
And that's all I really felt like writing as this post is long enough already. Feel free to leave any thoughts below. I know the talk of climate change might be controversial to some viewers, but just think of it as an excuse for this fictional thing to exist.

2023.03.22 07:26 Cordial_Gentleman Feedback on my most recent Graphic Design resume I wrote up

For any additional context. I graduated from College last September (2022) and have been applying like mad to companies since December, and I haven't gotten any callbacks so far. I'm wondering what I could do to improve my resume or adjust it. I'll add, when I write up a new application I always make sure to mould it specifically for the company I'm applying to; both the resume and cover letter. that said, I'm open to all forms of critiques, so hit me with some hard truths.

2023.03.22 06:49 5sidedsquares How early can someone (realistically) lateral?

Tl;dr: I was given the advice to start my career in Toronto and then lateral to Ottawa [the city I actually want to be in long-term] for financial reasons. Does that still make sense if I only plan to live in Toronto for a maximum of two years (including articling)?

Thank you to everyone who commented on my last post regarding trying to decide between practicing in Toronto and Ottawa. You all made a lot of good points, especially with regards to the pay discrepancy between the cities.
The most common piece of advice I was given was to start off my career practicing in Toronto, assuming I’m given the option, save as much money as I can, and then eventually lateral to Ottawa to settle down. I definitely see the merits to doing this, especially from a financial perspective, however I’m just wondering how long would it be before I could actually lateral?
For the sake of argument, let’s say that I am able to secure an articling position in Toronto, how many years would I need to work before making the move? If I’m being completely honest with myself, I don’t think that I could live/work in Toronto for more than 2 years (including articling).
Assuming leave a Toronto firm after completing 1st year associate, and starting my 2nd year, would I be better off? Is there a demand for junior associates at Ottawa firms? Or would I be better off just applying directly to Ottawa firms and have them train me myself?

2023.03.22 05:30 DiverSea9644 Junior considering transfer route

As a quick rundown, I’m currently a junior in high school and am currently applying to a program where students take only college courses for the entirety of their senior year. All these classes will likely align well with the college prereqs. The past two years, I’ve been an average student: I got a lot of Bs here and there but nothing atrocious. I’ve also been involved in a few clubs/research and held various leadership positions.
However, this past year, my grades/overall motivation have been at an all time low and have been sick and tired of this “rat race” for bullshitting your ec’s and talking a ton of AP classes.
Thus, since I have already spent the last two years establishing an already sufficient extracurricular profile, I figured that I could possibly use these past activities in my transfer app. Also, since so would be taking only college classes the next two semesters, I could max out all my units and complete all the requirements for the associates degree or at least to make a successful transfer (since I already would have taken AP Calc AB, Calc BC, Stats, Comp Sci, Wold Hist, and Physics 1). I could even start taking classes this summer, which could waive even more units.
There is only one problem: If I chose to take part in the program, I would need to apply as a freshman applicant to UCs and privates. While it might not seem too big an issue, I would like to apply where the college only considers my CC grades and not my HS grades. I don’t have too much of a problem staying one more year in CC but I would prefer to enter college in a timely manner (alongside my fellow HS peers who took the traditional route). While I did make some fond memories in high school, from how I’ve heard CC to be like, I could possibly remake those experience and strive in a more encouraging environment compared to the current state I am in.
I was wondering what any possible solutions could be around this issue. I am fully aware that my situation is not too extreme as it appears to be, but I would still really prefer to apply as a transfer, considering how well it would correspond to my current circumstances.
Thus, I am wondering what the potential drawbacks would be if I “drop out” of my current HS and enroll in CC full time. Or possibly pursue this program and drop out before the deadline to apply as a transfer (which very likely would not work since I’m still “enrolled” in my current HS).
TLDR; high school offers program at local CC, wanting to apply as a transfer instead of first year applicant

2023.03.22 04:29 paywallpiker Any other 95-99ers not feel connected to core gen z even though we are technically that group?

I grew up in the early 00s. I remember life before smartphones. I had a flip phone in grade school. Pokémon and yugioh was our prime fun. I still remember 08, bush, and the early obama years.
Vine was popular when I was in my junior year of high school. And I had a following on Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter.
Then In college were the trump years and this is right around the time the media started identifying gen z. Tekashi 69, fortnite, Dababy, and early tiktok (prepandemic) we’re associated with them. And they said the group started in 95-00
But by the time I entered the workforce after Covid, I found my gen z peers think I’m a fosssil, an old man. Which, fair, I’m 26 and close to 30 so I get it
But I don’t identify with my millenial coworkers. They remind me of the hipster lifestyle in 2010. I just can’t identify with that.

2023.03.22 03:29 TylerTurtle25 Worried a more junior associate getting all the perks and exposure.

Should I be worried if another associate working for my partner got invited to an industry conference (and has previously gone to other events), but was hired nearly one year after I was (licensed 2020 via 2021 or shortly before 2021). Feels like I’m missing opportunities that are going to matter come time for making decisions about who to promote for senior associate/junior partner. In a midsized insurance defense firm.

2023.03.22 03:21 lemmefinishyo Long rollback objections/rebuttal

Guys: I actually managed to change multiple people’s minds with a few discussion points about the rollback (even on Twitter!). I thought it might be interesting to summarize the main objections I saw online and in person, and my responses. (Sorry for the length!)
Objection: I like playing the same equipment as the pros.
Rebuttal: knock yourself the f out and play the new ball then for gods sake.
I find this argument particularly annoying, as YOU HAVE EVERY OPTION TO PLAY THIS BALL. Most people took the smarmy part of the rebuttal here (you already don’t play the same stuff as the pros, they get stuff off the tour van, which is partially true, but mostly not, and misses the point). You want to test yourself against the pros and inevitably get roasted? Play the new ball. Don’t want to? Play your current ball!
Objection: The USGA is taking away the fun! I love seeing the PGA tour stars hit bombs! Booo!
Rebuttal: You’ll still see Rory, Cam Young, Cam Champ, etc, hit absolute mind melting bombs. The longest players will still be the longest. The yardage numbers don’t mean anything in and of themselves - what matters is yardage compared to their peers and the course. If Rory hits it 330 with the current ball, and Billy Horschel hits it 300, with the rollback of approximately 13 yards, Rory will hit it 317, and Horschel 287. They’re still separated by the same amount. You’re not addicted to the actual NUMBER, you’re addicted to watching them hit it farther than you, and farther than their competitors. All it means is we don’t have to keep adding tees to classic courses, and in some instances, gives the course options to challenge players with bunkers that players can bomb it over now.
Objection: Why is the USGA punishing players for getting stronger and faster, being coached better, and optimizing via TrackMan?
Rebuttal: You’re right, it’s totally not the ball only (but partially for sure). Agreed. Players are encouraged to swing faster, the bigger drivers and sweet spots let them, and launch monitors let them optimize. But if we start from a position that distance in the pro and high AM golf is an increasing problem (watch NCAA Div 1 golf, it’s only increasing), the ball is an incredibly fair way to do it. Everyone has to use a ball, and if the impact hits all players equally, it’s a fairly easy/equitable way to slow the growth of distance for everyone. BTW - the players wearing Titleist and TM hats are some of the last people we should be listening to, they have literal companies paying them to say what they want them to say. It’s also not their jobs to be the umpires of the game - they’re the players, and I don’t blame them for being change-averse. It’s already going pretty good for them. Just don’t blindly parrot their talking points without thinking about why they’re saying it.
In an ideal world, I’d like more restrictions on some driver tech - sweet spot, club head size, etc - but I’ve been informed it’s incredibly complicated.
Objection: It’ll be hard for the top amateujunior players to transition to the “pro” ball.
Rebuttal: Nah, not really. It’s a change for sure, but they’re already going through constant change. As they grow their game, their distances are evolving continuously. It’s definitely not a convincing enough reason to stop regulating the game. And there’s tons of examples - like college baseball using aluminum bats/pros wood bats, different balls in high school football and pro football - to acknowledge that changes make sense. The AJGA (the best / most important junior golf tournaments) already said they would adopt the ball if this were to come to pass.
And keep in mind - THE BALL IS ALREADY INCREDIBLY REGULATED. There are paragraphs of testing standards for the current ball. They’re just changing those standards they already enforce.
Ok, just my two cents, but I’ve seen a ton of people engage on this topic but not a lot of “pro-rollback” rebuttal I saw. It’s such, such a wet blanket of a position I get not wanting to take it, but I just really want to see the game stay beautiful.

2023.03.22 02:48 dhnaranjo I made a ChatGPT-driven TODO implementing RoboJunior

RoboJunior gathers every file in the directories `app/models` and `test/models`, plus your `Gemfile`, bundles them up into a single file, puts some instructions up front and asks ChatGPT! Junior then takes the reply and just shoves it on back into your repo. Check them out in this here gist.
Sometimes it works OK. Other times it does more than you asked for. Often it's absolutely wrong. Frequently it says there aren't any changes to make when there very much are. It needs help most of the time. Occasionally it comes back with something pretty clever. You know, juniors!
This is not a gem, it's a fun idea. Critique is appreciated, criticism less so.
Here's a sample payload and generated diff:
``` I want you to act as a full stack developer working in Ruby on Rails verson 7.0 and Ruby 3.2. I will provide a codebase with a number of TODOs for you to complete.
When completing a TODO you must: - Complete the TODO - Write a test to ensure the TODO is completed - Remove the completed TODO from the codebase
When creating a model you must: - Create a migration - Create a model - Create a factory - Create a test - All attributes should be required unless specified as optional - All associations should be defined with inverse_of: : - All has_many associations should be defined with dependent: :destroy - Only one model should be created per TODO
When creating a test you must: - Use FactoryBot to create test data - Use Faker to generate test data - Use MiniTest assertions - Use Shoulda Matchers to test validations and associations
Also, please follow these general guidelines: - Do not use any gems that are not already in the codebase - Do not make any changes to the codebase that are not required to complete a TODO
When replying to this message, please format your response as follows: - Include any files you created or modified - Do not include any files you did not create or modify - Prepend each file with ---- on a line by itself - Prepend each file with the file path on a line by itself - Do not include any other text in your response
2023.03.22 00:56 Frost_Phoenix_ On the Subject of FNAF:SB...
On the Subject of FNAF:SB...
Does anyone else think it's weird that Bonnie just got scrapped?
Without going into the redundant discussion about supporting evidence for Bonnie's disappearance and who may or may not have been behind it and where he ended up (psych; this is a FNAF theory post, you know I'm going there), is there anyone else just kinda wondering why Bonnie was just...dumped by Fazbear Entertainment after years of using him? I kinda understand from a merchandising and new-fan-draw perspective that it shakes things up to create a new character and place him as the bassist in the band, but from a company monetary perspective?
"We have invested literally thousands, if not hundreds of thousands into this character. He is recognized by all fans and has huge brand recognizion attached to him. We have merchandise of him, we even have a bowling alley dedicated to him, he is one of the core four. Oh, he's wandered off and is completely AWOL with no clue where he's gone? Welp, time to start anew, cue up the next in the band roster, off we ride!"
It's called out how easy it is to repair a new character, a la angered Vanessa:
Vanessa Demonstrating Corporate Harassment
So why, why would you just abandon hundreds of thousands of dollars in robot development, marketing, advertisment, brand recognition, general ease of operation, because someone played too rough with Bonnie? I doubt they only had one casing set, and only a fool would have a singular copy of an AI programming (and Fazcorp may be dumb, but they aren't fools). Redoing Bonnie from the corporate perspective would've been a cinch.
(Yes, I am aware of AI sentience and the difficulty of replicating an individual person, but none of that matters to the execs because none of that really affects the bottom line unless stuff gets expensive.)
So to suddenly yank Bonnie with no explanation given to the general public OR to the front-line staff would've taken something fairly catastrophic.
Another Message to the Boss that Will go Completely Ignored
And note, we never hear of Bonnie being destroyed by Monty. There's no message that says that Bonnie was found in Gator Golf, just that he went missing in Gator Golf.
Just a Tad More Expensive than Losing your Phone
It's easy to assume that Monty - with documented anger issues, destructive tendancies, mountainous jealosy, and ambition - did away with Bonnie to make a spot for himself in the headliner band, but that only makes sense if Bonnie was irreplacable. He's not. Take a new endo, polish up a new casing, implant a copy of Bonnie's AI, and hey presto! Our favorite bowling bassist is back on the job! Monty's move makes sense from a human perspective, but these aren't humans. They're robots. Their parts are interchangable. Their intelligence is lines of code. AI sentience argument notwithstanding, it's easier on everyone (except Monty) to just rebuild Bonnie from "scratch" and keep rolling on like nothing weird's ever happened.
And yet, Bonnie's just pulled. He vanishes into Gator Golf, and the entire company gives up on him and embarks on a far more expensive rebranding project. Why?
I'd theorize it's got something to do with everybody's favorite asthmatic murder grandpa, Mr Willie "Comeback" Afton.
Take a look at u/SkyPieGuy1's post about Afton's model (This link right here, go upvote his awesome comparison).
Look at dem long smexy legs!
I'm very sure all of us have thought about where Crispy Boi Afton got his new bod from, and with no bunny in the Pizzaplex and the unlikelihood that the massive 165 degree fire in FNAF 6 would turn Scraptrap into anything but a molten pile of metal and singed guts, it's not a massive logical leap to assume that Vanny would pull Bonnie to the basement of the basement of the Pizzaplex. Afton is an ailurophile. (Gloriously Purple) Bonnie is literally right there for the taking. Possibly with some help from Monty, it's not hard to assume that she coulda knocked our best bunny boy out and refitted him to be the vessel of an immortal child murderer.
(Also as a weird sidenote, fire will not burn skeleton, so this
Bacon! Wait, wrong animal...
and this
Me After Finals
are perfectly acceptable to exist at the same time.)
But that leaves us with our orginal dilemma, you've lost a Bonnie. Just rebuild him. Something had to have happened with Bonnie for the company to freak out and decide that he was not worth the massive cost to rebrand and shove him under the rug.
Personally? I think it'd have to be something associated with Afton trying to go public. Maybe he tried to use his new body to start doing what he do and almost got caught when the batteries ran out. Maybe there is some hush-hush incident of "Glamrock Bonnie," scrapped and scuffed and looking like something that H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks spat back out due to indigestion, attempted to kidnap and/or kill someone. Maybe whoever got Vanessa into her job sept under the rug an incident report of a guard encountering something truly horrifying staggering toward them with the shell of a formerly beloved bassist.
For a company to just wipe all indication that a formerly public asset existed in the first place, the negative PR rammifications of an event would have to be insurmountable. Nightmare Fuel Former Boss rising from the ashes to continue his lifelong mission of Mass Amounts of Child Murder definitely fits the bill.
But that's just a theory...
2023.03.21 22:16 autobuzzfeedbot 21 Facts That Are So Interesting, I Know They Will Live In My Brain For All Of Eternity
  1. While Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York" is probably one of the crooner's best-known songs, it was originally very different. Turns out, we have Robert De Niro to thank for it! Composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb were tapped to write music for Martin Scorsese's 1977 film, New York, New York, which stars Liza Minnelli and De Niro. When the duo previewed the songs they had written, De Niro thought the title track, which was connected to his character, was too lighthearted. Although Kander and Ebb said they thought De Niro seemed "pompous" in telling them to rewrite the song, they took the criticism to heart and ended up penning their new version of the song in just 45 minutes.
  2. Ferris Bueller's Day Off is my favorite movie of all time, so it's honestly criminal that I've never done a deep dive into some behind-the-scenes moments from the film! John Hughes, known for his teen movies, ended up writing the script in just a few days in order to get a draft finished before the Writers Guild of America went on strike. The script was reportedly so strong that it was barely edited before filming started. The movie is widely considered to be a love letter to Hughes's Chicago hometown and is filled with references to his own upbringing and shots of the city's skyline. In fact, Hughes even gave Ferris the same address as his childhood home, and his bedroom reportedly resembled Hughes's.
  3. If I had to learn about this giraffe mating ritual, then it's only fair that you do too, okay? Unlike other animals, giraffes don't have a set mating season. Instead, they have an estrous cycle, which resembles a human menstrual cycle, except this cycle swaps blood for urine. When a male giraffe approaches a female giraffe, he begins to rub against her, which she takes as a signal to begin peeing. The male giraffe then tastes her pee to see if she's fertile, and thus, the mating ritual begins. A typical giraffe pregnancy lasts for 400–460 days. Male giraffes typically have no role in raising their offspring.
  4. In 2007, Lisa Nowak became the first NASA astronaut to be arrested when she drove across the United States to confront a woman who was dating a fellow astronaut with whom Nowak had also had a relationship. About a decade after graduating from the US Naval Academy, Nowak was selected to be an astronaut at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, where she specialized in robotics. Nowak said she was deeply affected by the 2003 Columbia space shuttle explosion because her best friend, astronaut Laurel Clark, died. Nowak told NASA that her children convinced her to continue on with her space career despite her unease.
  5. Despite what you might believe after watching The Greatest Showman, P.T. Barnum was not a good guy. He had a long history of animal cruelty and was known for mistreating enslaved people and people with disabilities. He even reportedly hated the people who paid money to come see his exhibits. Barnum was allegedly frustrated that people were taking their time during visits to his museum, so he decided to post signs reading "This Way to the Egress" all over the place. He (correctly) believed that most of the visitors wouldn't know that "egress" meant "exit," so when they followed the signs, they ended up unknowingly leaving the entire museum. As a result, many people paid to reenter, bringing home even more money for Barnum.
  6. Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" is essentially History 101 in song form. The track name-drops 118 historical events from 1949 to 1989, including everything from pivotal moments in the civil rights movement to details from sports and pop culture history. Joel was inspired to write the song after having a conversation with Sean Lennon, who was then in his 20s, while in the recording studio. One of Lennon's friends allegedly said that it was a terrible time to be a young person. Joel, who was about to turn 40, reportedly said that his own younger years hadn't been that easy either.
  7. Coney Island's skyline looked a lot different back in the 1800s. The Brooklyn boardwalk was once home to a 200-foot-tall elephant-shaped hotel! The hotel, known as the Elephantine Colossus, was built in 1885 and contained 31 rooms, a concert hall, and a museum. The elephant's head housed an observatory, and its eyes served as telescopes. The real kicker was that the hotel was built several years before the Statue of Liberty was completed, so the giant elephant was often the first thing immigrants saw when they reached New York. At some point, the hotel was seen as gimmicky and lost most of its clientele. Soon, sex workers began moving in. In 1896, Elephantine Colossus burned down and was never rebuilt.
  8. During Ronald Reagan's 1966 California gubernatorial campaign, he began eating jelly beans in an attempt to curb his pipe-smoking habit. His jelly beans of choice were the Goelitz Mini Jelly Beans from the Herman Goelitz Candy Co. Once the company caught wind of Reagan's love for the treat, they began to send the politician a monthly shipment of candy and even gifted the governor with a custom jelly bean jar. After Reagan's two terms as governor ended, the company continued to send him jelly beans. In 1976, Goelitz debuted their latest creation: the Jelly Belly. Within two years, Reagan's entire jelly bean shipment shifted to include only Jelly Belly jelly beans.
  9. There are two main groups of whales: baleen whales, which include species like the blue whale and the humpback whale; and toothed whales, consisting of orcas, belugas, and sperm whales. While you probably guessed that toothed whales are named as such because they have teeth, baleen whales have baleen plates in their mouths, which help them filter out krill and other food. Toothed whales also have a "melon" in their foreheads. The melon is a mass of tissue that helps with communication and is crucial for echolocation, which they use to find food and to navigate underwater.
  10. In 1997, construction on Disneyland's California Adventure Park was halted after Princess Diana was killed in a limo accident in a Paris tunnel on Aug. 31. California Adventure was supposed to include a ride called Superstar Limo, which involved guests boarding a limo and embarking on a high-speed chase through some of Los Angeles's biggest landmarks in order to get to the Disney offices in time to sign a huge movie contract. Riders also had to evade the paparazzi. Once the ride ended, passengers were encouraged to buy mock tabloids featuring the pictures the "paparazzi" had taken of them. Following Diana's death, Disney knew they could no longer debut the ride. Soon, they began to brainstorm alternative ideas to replace the limo theme.
  11. Donald Gorske, who is known as the ultimate Big Mac fan, has reportedly eaten at least one McDonald's Big Mac every day for the past 50 years. As of May 2022, Gorske believes he has consumed about 32,340 Big Macs. He told Guinness World Records that he typically eats two Big Macs a day, although he revealed that at one point, his daily diet included nine burgers! "May 17, 1972, was the day I got my first car," Gorske said. "I drove to McDonald’s, ordered my first three Big Macs, went in the car, and ate them. And I said right there that I’m gonna probably eat these the rest of my life, and I threw the cartons in the backseat and started counting them from day one." Despite his Big Mac diet, Gorske and his wife say that doctors have given him a clean bill of health.
  12. Although you probably picture Queen Elizabeth II wearing one of her signature colorful skirt suits, her fashion history is actually quite fascinating! Elizabeth was photographed wearing pants only once during her entire reign. In 1970, she was reportedly interested in updating her look, and asked her tailor for a custom pantsuit to wear during her royal tour in Australia. It's safe to assume that Elizabeth wasn't too fond of the outfit, as she was never again seen wearing pants in public. In order to maintain professionalism and avoid any type of fashion mishap, her dress hems were always cut below the knee.
  13. In 1986, Clint Eastwood ran for mayor of Carmel, California, in part because he wanted to overturn the town's strict law regarding ice cream sales. Eastwood announced his intention to run for office in 1985 after he reportedly found the City Council very difficult to work with when he wanted to turn property he owned into office space. He also cited a 1929 law in Carmel that banned the sale of ice cream cones as another reason for his campaign. In April 1986, he defeated incumbent Charlotte Townsend. His first order of business? He removed from office all of the people who supported the ice cream ban, thus allowing the sale of ice cream cones in Carmel for the first time in decades.
  14. Chances are, you read George Orwell's Animal Farm in school. In the novel, a group of animals team up to rebel against the farmer who owns them, only to end up living in a communist dictatorship led by pigs. Although Orwell said that the book was the first time he had successfully been able to blend politics and art, he had a hard time finding a publisher. Several publishing houses turned down the book because they felt uneasy about its political stance. Secker & Warburg ultimately agreed to publish Animal Farm, and the book became a hit and was even used by the CIA as a propaganda tool during the Cold War.
  15. In 1928, Huey Long was elected governor of Louisiana on a promise of helping people who had been neglected by the federal government. He soon had his sights set on Washington and won a Senate seat. But before leaving for DC in 1932, he had the lieutenant governor replaced by two successors who promised to follow Long's commands. In the Senate, he created the “Share Our Wealth” program, which many thought was part of his bid for the presidency. In 1935, Long was assassinated by a political rival. Despite his death, his impact in the state lived on. In 1940, a study showed that rural schoolchildren not only had no idea that Long had been killed but also believed he was president.
  16. The Real Housewives franchise put Bravo on the map for its depiction of the wild and wacky antics of wealthy women around the country, but it originally looked like a much different show! Scott Dunlop, the original producer of the Real Housewives of Orange County, got the idea for the show in 1986 when he moved from Los Angeles to Coto de Caza, one of the world's largest gated communities, located in Orange County, California. Dunlop began to notice that many of his female neighbors spent their days shopping and playing golf while their husbands went to work.
  17. The first meal eaten on the moon included bacon bits, peaches, sugar cookie cubes, and a pineapple-grapefruit beverage. Bacon reportedly had a long history when it came to space travel. It was a staple during the Gemini missions and became a favorite among many astronauts. Despite all of the bacon love, it's since disappeared from space menus. Now the closest thing to bacon is a sausage patty that has to be rehydrated with warm water before being eaten.
  18. Oscar Gamble, a baseball player who spent over 20 years in the major leagues, was known not only for his on-field play but also for his Afro, which sparked quite the controversy. In 1973, Gamble arrived at the Cleveland Indians training camp sporting an Afro. Although many Black basketball players had Afros, the hairstyle wasn't too popular among baseball players. Baseball was often seen as more conservative, and during the 1970s, the Afro was associated with the Black Power movement. Gamble's hair quickly became controversial. "People took one look at that hair and thought I was a bad guy," Gamble said in 1979. "There were some sportswriters who wouldn’t talk to me. They thought I was some kind of militant, with my beard and my hair."
  19. In December 1990, Iben Browning, who claimed that he was a climatologist, predicted that a major earthquake was going to hit the St. Louis area on Dec. 3. In New Madrid, a Missouri town located on a fault line, people began stockpiling supplies, while others left town completely. Browning reportedly used weather patterns to make his predictions, although his exact methods were never publicized. Although scientists didn't vocally deny Browning's claims, it was believed that they didn't support his prediction, since it's impossible to predict an earthquake. The earthquake never happened. In fact, the area has not faced an earthquake at the magnitude Browning predicted in the three decades since.
  20. While kangaroos are known for their hopping abilities (they can jump about 25 feet in one go!), they are unable to go backward because their big feet and long tails prohibit any backward movement. This anatomical hindrance has since been used by their native Australia as a symbol. The kangaroo was reportedly included on the Australian coat of arms to represent the idea that Australia is a nation that is always moving forward.
  21. And finally, Elouise Cobell, who was also known as Yellow Bird Woman, fought for Native Americans to have control over their land and finances. Cobell was born on the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana, where her family did not have running water or electricity. Her great-great-grandfather notably stood up to the US government in the 19th century. When Cobell was 4 years old, her father built a one-room schoolhouse that she attended until she was in high school. Cobell reportedly took notice of her family's complaints about the Bureau of Indian Affairs, an agency that many suspected mismanaged the profits from land and trusts owned by Native Americans.
