2023.05.28 19:16 brdwyfn92 Preparing For Guests - Master Checklist

Saw another post about preparing for guests and thought I’d share my master doc. I keep it as a checklist on my phone and cross things off as I go. I don’t prepare everything for every guest (depends on how long they’re staying/what the season is/if they’re my MIL lol). I follow Pottery Barn’s guide on making a bed so you’ll see there are lots of bedding layers on the list. Bedding in particular I prepare based on the season and if our guests are from a warm climate (I live in a cold one). I also have double curtain rods in our guest rooms so there’s one sheer option and one blackout option. I write a short welcome card to all our guests that is really an excuse to provide the Wifi info in a cute way. We also have a nice bakery in the area that I’ll sometimes get individually wrapped cookies from as they have some really pretty designs. We’re a ‘shoes off’ household so I have a huge pack of spa slippers so guests always have an option for something on their feet that isn’t their shoes. The bonus there is that the slippers come with a little carrying pouch so they can take them home.
Hope someone finds this useful!

2023.05.28 19:14 LouiseSherharst Little rant

Ok. So this has been very annoying now.
You know, when male leads get very, very buffed for the sake of plot, romance, saving fls, etc.
I seriously cannot accept that most of the times, an ordinary noble child can beat a grown/ trained adult. And a duke of the north or a politically powerful man who can kill hundreds of people at once.
Like HOW????!!! Also, many times they are either abused/ abandoned AND THEREFORE IS NOT TRAINED TO FIGHT AT ALL. There are also some who are AT SCHOOL?? They are still fricking learning?! Moreover, how come politically-powerful adult mls are so strong?! They always seem to be geniuses while there is no explanation! And remember that it will be ALWAYS princes, dukes, emperors... who get access to this buff. Why some other noblemen can't be as strong if they have access to the same, if not, even better education? And I know some manhwas try to justify that by saying the ml is of special blood, a genius, blah blah blah, but there are so many times they still annoy me so much.
I don't know why or how, most mls had to be so, so overpowered. Like, make them learn hard work! I know some mls do have to work hard, but in certain cases, they are already secret geniuses...
Or maybe, they SUDDENLY get buffed. I do remember some manhwas that never, ever mention or imply how powerful the ml is, and then BOOM! There he goes! Genius sword-fighter! Special mage! Super strength! And the next thing I know, it is NEVER MENTIONED AGAIN. For plot's sake?
Like, for example, newest chapter of The Lady Wants to Rest. Ok, so the ml is powerful and all. He has special eyes, he is a genius, blah blah blah. And then he faces the monster of humanity's sins - an IMMORTAL, POWERFUL being who is basically the representation of sins. And that must mean it is nearly indestructible. And then, the ml just go *I'll just have to kill you over and over again if you are immortal*, he slashes through its attacks easily... He is a mere human who has some eye abilities! What?! So you are telling me he could have easily defeated the literal representation of sins had it not been for its immortality?! Oh, and that crown prince also, he is fricking annoying. Maybe there is something wrong with me, but reading the chapters really made me root for the monster.

Is this new paddle sport going to displace pickleball? Courts proposed for downtown Oceanside San Diego Union-Tribune
Move over, pickleball. There’s a new paddle sport coming to town.
Two racket sports enthusiasts plan to open North County’s first padel courts this summer on South Coast Highway in Oceanside.
Padel is a relatively new sport similar to pickleball, racketball and squash. Players use perforated, hard-plastic paddles and a ball like a tennis ball, but slightly heavier and with less pressure.
The court is less than half the size of a tennis court. It is divided by a 3-foot-high net and is enclosed by 16-foot-high glass walls that can rebound the ball during the game. The playing surface is a thin layer of sand spread on artificial grass.
“It’s easy to play, but hard to master,” said James Bragg, a professional pickleball player and former collegiate tennis player. He and his business partner, Amir Palmen, plan to open a pair of courts on the vacant site of a former used car lot in the 200 block of South Coast Highway.
“It’s really great for all ages,” Bragg said in a May 8 presentation to the Oceanside Planning Commission, which approved the project 7-0. “We’re starting with programming for all levels.”
The courts will be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. Online reservations will be required, and rental equipment will be available.
Padel was invented in Mexico in 1969 and now has millions of players in Latin America and Europe, but it is relatively new to the United States. The only public courts in San Diego County are at the Barnes Tennis Center, a nonprofit for students in Ocean Beach, where most of the courts are for tennis and a few for pickleball.
Marta Morga, 28, took a break from her padel game Thursday to talk at the Barnes center. Formerly a collegiate and professional tennis player, and still a tennis coach, she learned tennis age 7 and has been playing the game ever since. She took up padel less than a year ago, but has fallen for her new sport hard.
“This is way more fun,” she said. “It’s more social, not as physically demanding as tennis. You are always with a partner, and if you have good chemistry with your partner that makes it more fun. I have made so many friends playing padel.”
Playing the ball off the walls adds variety and excitement to the game, Morga said, and there can be a surprise on every point.
The padel courts at Barnes are managed by Ryan Redondo, CEO of Taktika Padel. Taktika opened the first three courts there in 2021 and later added four more. The padel courts are all at one end of the center on ground that was formerly empty, so there’s no competition for space with paddleball or tennis.
Taktika also has three courts in Carson and plans to open as many as 200 across California in the near future, Redondo said.
Pickleball may be the fastest-growing sport in the United States, but padel is the fastest-growing sport worldwide, he said. The U.S. is on track to have 30,000 courts by 2029 and the sport could be in the Olympics for the first time in 2032.
About 500 padel players use the Barnes courts, he said. The center hosts several leagues that play regular tournaments and recently formed a professional team called the San Diego Stingrays now in its first year of competition.
The courts at Barnes are packed every day from mid-afternoon until the center closes at 9 p.m., Redondo said.
He was happy about the new courts coming to Oceanside, he said, adding, “We need the competition.”
Oceanside’s planning commissioners had a few questions about the proposed facilities, the noise, and staffing, but quickly warmed to the proposal.
“It’s exciting, another outdoor opportunity for the community,” said Commission Chair Tom Rosales.
“I wish you guys the best of luck,” said Commissioner Louise Balma.
Pickleball players in the United States in 2022 increased by 85.7 percent from the previous year and by 158.6 percent over three years, according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association.
Cities and private communities across San Diego County have been adding pickleball courts for several years. In some places, the pickleball courts have replaced tennis courts, which at times has led to conflicts with die-hard tennis fans.
Most racket sports enthusiasts believe there’s room for all three games, and statistics from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association back that up.
Tennis participation in this country grew by 1 million players in 2022 to more than 23.6 million people, the third consecutive year that the sport has seen an increase, according to the U.S. Tennis Association.
Court games in general go hand-in-hand with a healthier life, according to the Tennis Association, a fact that may help to boost their popularity.
Studies show participation in racket sports, including tennis, reduce the risk of cardiovascular-related death by 56 percent.

2023.05.28 18:36 SavingsSpare8104 How can I quickly dry my nails?

How can I quickly dry my nails?
Have your nails ever been perfectly manicured or pedicured, waited a long time, and then discovered that they still had smudges on them? Believe us, we understand. We're providing advice on how to dry nail paint quickly because of this. So, here are a few trade secrets you might want to try out!

1. How much time does nail polish require to dry?

The drying time will vary depending on the type of nail polish being used. Several things can affect how long things take to dry. The type of polish used, the thickness and number of applications used, and whether or not you incorporated nails art beauty are a few examples. In spite of this, it usually takes between 10 and 15 minutes for nail polish to dry. The best course of action is to stay away from any dangerous activities, even if your manicure or pedicure seems dry. In the case of a pedi, avoid jogging shortly after getting your nails done.

2. Why isn't the lacquer on my nails drying?

Inadequate application is the most frequent cause of your nail polish not drying. Drying time can be significantly sped up by applying too many layers, applying too many coats too quickly, or applying too many coats. Additionally, if you've waited a while and your nails are still wet, check the bottle's expiration date. That nail paint bottle may have been stored for a lot longer than you realized, and now it is just bad.

3. How may nail polish be quickly dried?

The fact that you don't have a lot of time can be a contributing factor in the issue. Or perhaps you're just tired since your most recent manicure was destroyed while you were waiting for it to dry. You've been contemplating how to dry nails quickly, whether it was because of a terrible experience or a hectic schedule. Nearly all people who enjoy nail art think about ways to reduce drying time. That nail technicians have developed a variety of tips and tricks is not at all surprising. So, if you still have questions about how soon nail polish dries, read on. To find out, keep reading!

4. Polish that dries quickly

It didn't take long for nail polish makers to grasp the difficulty of long drying times as more people entered the beauty business and regularly used nail polish on their clients. Fast-drying nail polish was created as a result. There won't be much waiting required after using this type of nail paint. On your hand or foot, the first nail should be dry by the time you get to the last nail.

5. Dryer for nail polish

One of the most widely used methods for accelerating nail polish drying is a hairdryer. Just bear in mind to always use cool air, never hot, when setting your blow dryer. If it is set to warm air, your nail polish may end up melting rather than drying. Additionally, make sure the air burst isn't too powerful. In the end, you want your lacquer to dry rather than blitz it off your nails and onto your cuticles. Additionally, if you don't have access to a hairdryer, you may try fanning your nails with some paper.

6. Swift-drying drips

Oil-based, quick-drying drops are a great substitute for a fast-drying top coat because they don't add a second layer to your nail. The drops maintain the color while absorbing the solvents in the nail polish. The drops create a sort of barrier after you apply them to your nails. They protect your nails from tiny foreign objects like dirt or dust. They simply slip off, not setting in the polish. The composition of these products also makes them a fantastic cuticle moisturizer. A win-win situation, indeed!

7. How quickly does water dry nails?

A cold water nail polish method may be what you're thinking of. You can try two other approaches, though. Start by soaking your freshly painted nails in cold water. To avoid leaving smudges on your nails, make sure the water is flowing short gel nails natural steadily but not too quickly. Before painting your nails, use the second technique: place two or three ice cubes in a bowl of cold water. Following the completion of your nail painting, wait two minutes before dipping your nails into the bowl and holding them there for five minutes. When you pull your nails out, you should notice water beads forming on the nail plate. It will result in your nail.

2023.05.28 17:52 sanddragon939 Thawne's Age

Somehow, this has never really been discussed much (or ever). But since the show is over now and all we have is time to look back and discuss stuff, I thought I'd dive into this topic.
The objective here is not to figure out how old Thawne is physically. Between his many deaths and resurrections, timeline changes, time spent in Limbo, change in body, speed-healing and what-not, that's a fool's errand. I'm talking about his age experientially.
So here goes:
  1. First let's nail down his birth year, which is surprisingly easy to do. In Season 1, Eobard mentions being born '136 years from now [2015]'. Since the number was pretty specific, I'd say its accurate, and that Thawne was born in the year 2151.
  2. The next event in Thawne's life for which we have some definitive chronological placement is when he first meets the Flash. In Armageddon, Thawne says that he meets the Flash 'nearly 2 centuries from now [2021]'. In 9x10, Barry recalls how Thawne says they meet '170 from now'. Okay, let's take the 170 years number since that's more specific (though how did Barry arrive at it, since we never hear Thawne mention it on-screen?). The question is - 170 years from when? From the year 2000, where Barry and Thawne currently are? Or from the early 2020's (2021 to be exact, since that's when Wellsobard mentioned the 'nearly 2 centuries from now' bit)? Well - if we take 2000 as our starting point, that would mean Thawne first met the Flash in 2170 when he was 19 years old! If we take 2021 as our starting point, Thawne first met the Flash in 2191, when he was around 40 years old! I think the latter makes a lot more sense so I'll go with that.
  3. Thawne became the Reverse-Flash and spent years battling the Flash. We don't know how many years that is, because all this involved time-travel. It could have been 5 years or 10 years or even longer. I'm gonna take a random guess here and go by Matt Letscher's age when he first filmed those flashbacks to Nora Allen's murder - 45. You can give or take a few years of course, but I think it's a reasonable assumption. So Thawne is around 45 when he discovers Barry's identity, travels back to kill him as a child, kills Nora Allen instead, ends up trapped in the past, and assumes the identity of Harrison Wells.
  4. Thawne spends 15 years as Harrison Wells, from 2000 to 2015, before Eddie shoots himself and he's erased from existence. So by the time Thawne is 'erased' (actually sent into the Negative Speed Force, as we later learn), he's around 60.
  5. We don't know how much time passes for Thawne before he shows up in Crisis on Earth X. It could be years later for him, or it could be no time at all. We're talking a time-traveler who's been in Limbo after all. So I'm assuming it was no time at all, and Thawne is still around 60, again, give or take a couple of years. Now, at some point, Thawne is imprisoned in Iron Heights, using Cicada's dagger, in 2034. Again, we don't know how much time after COEX that was. Let's assume, at bare minimum, it was almost immediately after. Thawne then spends 15 years imprisoned in Iron Heights before he meets Nora West-Allen and manipulates her into manipulating the timeline. So Thawne is at least 75 in Season 5 (possibly a few years older).
  6. Again, we don't know what happens to Thawne after he gets out of Iron Heights due to the timeline change (which also seems to de-age him?). It seems though that his body was destroyed after COIE, and he becomes negative tachyons who try to possess Nash. We have no way of telling how much time has passed for him given all this. Eventually he gets resurrected by the Speed Force to help fight Godspeed. So I'd peg his age as being still around 75, maybe a few years more, through all this. But then things get weird with Armageddon. It's unclear exactly what Thawne does, but it seems he created an alternate timeline where he got struck by lightning in 2013 instead of Barry and became the Flash. Now did Thawne just warp reality to make everyone think that, or did he literally live an extra 18 years in that timeline as the Flash (remember, he's in 2031 when he's about to marry Iris)? If we assume he did, that makes him around 93 by the end of Armageddon, and also when he later returns and has his final death as the Negative Speed Force avatar. And of course, when he returns again briefly in the series finale.
  7. So to sum up, Thawne is at least 93 (and probably in his mid-to-late 90's...maybe even over a hundred) by the end of the show. And we basically get to see him across 50ish years of his life - the youngest Thawne we see, in 2x11, was probably in his early 40's, and Wellsobard in Season 1 was around 60.
  8. As for the Flashpoint Thawne - well, he's 45 in Flashpoint and probably around that age when he fights the Legends. He then spends years working for the time-wraiths before his death in LoT Season 7 and his resurrection and return in Flash Season 8. We don't know how many years, but I'm gonna go by Letscher's real age and assume it was something like 6-7 years later (plus the year he spends living as an amnesiac Eobard with Meena), and he's in his early 50's by the time he dies.
Summary
Original Thawne/Wellsobard
Age 40 - Becomes a speedster, is upstaged by the Flash before his public debut and turns against his idol, starts time-traveling and discovers his destiny to become the Reverse-Flash.
Age 40+ - Time travels to 2016 in a bid to discover the Flash's time period of origin, and encounters the Flash and his team.
Age 40-45 - Has numerous encounters with the Flash across time.
Age 45 - Discovers the Flash's true identity and travels back to 2000 to kill Barry as a child but ends up killing Nora instead and is stuck in the past. Assumes the identity of Harrison Wells.
Age 58-60 - Engineers the particle accelerator explosion, and ensures that Barry becomes the Flash. Mentors him while regaining his speed in a bid to return home. Ultimately erased from existence (and banished into the Negative Speed Force) when Eddie shoots himself.
Age 60+ - Re-emerges from the Speed Force and teams up with Dark Arrow and Overgirl on Earth X. Later travels to 2034 and is captured and imprisoned in Iron Heights using Cicada's dagger.
Age 75 - Meets Nora West-Allen and manipulates her into traveling to 2019 and changing the past to facilitate his escape. His physical form is later destroyed after COIE due to unknown circumstances.
Age 75+ - As a stream of negative tachyons, attempts to possess Nash Wells but fails. Later is resurrected by the Speed Force to fight Godspeed. After being beaten effortlessly by Barry, he uses the Still Force to start manipulating reality and stealing Barry's life.
Age 75-93: Travels back to 2013 in the new Armageddon timeline, is struck by lightning and becomes the Flash, and also Iris' lover. Spends the next 18 years as the Flash.
Age 93+: The Armageddon timeline is undone. Thawne travels to 2021 seeking Team Flash's help as he's being erased from existence. His connection to the Speed Force is severed to save him and he's imprisoned on Lian Yu. Later, he's resurrected again after taking over the boy of Flashpoint Thawne but is overwhelmed by the Negative Speed Force and dies. Briefly resurrected again by Cobalt Blue, before disappearing into Limbo again.
Flashpoint Thawne
Age 45 - Stopped from killing Nora Allen and imprisoned in the alternate Flashpoint timeline in 2016. Later travels back to 2000 again with Barry to kill Nora and restore the timeline.
Age 45+ - Due to being a time remnant of a person who was erased from existence, he's pursued by time wraiths, as he puts together the Legion of Doom in a bid to gain the Spear of Destiny and rewrite reality. He fails and is ultimately captured by the wraiths.
Age 46-51: Works for the time wraiths as the guardian of a fixed point, namely the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
Age 51+: Encounters the Legends and is killed helping them. Resurrected as an amnesiac and transported to the year 2021 where he applies for a job at Fast Track Labs with Meena Dhawan.
Age 52+: Encounters Team Flash, becomes a speedster and dawns the Reverse-Flash suit, and ultimately killed when Original Thawne takes over his body.

2023.05.28 17:44 fullnihilism Advice for someone hard on their nails

I've been wanting to ask this for a while but wasn't sure if it was allowed, if it isn't obvs please let me know.
TL;DR I'm very hard on my nails and am hoping for tips to have longer lasting nails that won't tear up my nail beds, ensuring I can get them year round?
I'm am owner operator of a small dog grooming salon so my hands are in water and soap all day and I am always bumping them on stuff etc. Also my natural nails are not naturally very thick. I've really only gotten gel (before i did this work) or acrylic nails with gel polish over the years and I find the latter is the only thing that truly lasts more than a couple weeks. I get a fill every 3 weeks when I'm getting them done. I've noticed many add on like getting chrome powder or designs make them chip sooner so I don't get them. I generally get oval or ballerina shape. Still, I'll have 1-2 fall off between fills.
I often have to stop getting them at some point and let my nails heal because with the nails that fall off they just start to get too thin. I haven't had them in 4 months now and I MISS MY NAILS SO MUCH.
My question is, is there anything I can do in the type of nails I'm getting, the place I'm going, the amount I'm going, in between care etc that will enable me to keep getting them year round? I've only tried polygel and dips at home and they literally just peel off or start to crack after one day of work. Help!

2023.05.28 17:40 VagrantScrub Mincemeat

Stalemate.
How he hated the word.
What an awful state of affairs. To think his glorious army couldn’t subdue the humans. The fleet and those soft admirals and captains had brought them to this moment.
Always trying to slow down any progress.
Always trying to delay.
Caught up in infrastructure and supply. Endless counting. Endless reconnaissance. Endless prattling.
But no more.
The dead human had been their salvation.
A malfunction had cast him off course and rapidly depleted his air supply. The soldier had taken his own life before having to suffer the agonizing consequences of slow decompression.
The plans he carried had been verified. The window to strike with the information they had was closing. A knockout blow could be delivered to the humans at minimal cost to their own forces. It was perfect.
He would convince the Emperor at the next meeting. He had too!
—--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
—--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stalemate.
The Emperor of Ten Thousand Stars could hardly bear the infighting of his advisors. Let alone the actual war.
Not for the first time he lamented his lot in life. He had been trained to rule as an able administrator. Not a warrior like his brother. Or his famous father who had struck so deep at the humans and their holdings. Both gone now but their ambitions could not be so easily reigned in even after their deaths.
A 230 year war was winding down with no victor.
History would remember him as a wimp. A loser. A weakling. The Empire might very well be dissolved from within. Every noble on every planet would see any negotiations as a ripe time for overthrowing him.
Or so it had seemed.
The High Marshall of the Infantry had conceived a daring strike with information they had gleaned from a dead human military courier. He had carried immensely important information about a buildup of something of vital importance to the humans.
He was no warrior but he was no technocrat either. He couldn’t quite understand the importance of two planetary sized factories being destroyed.
But he understood numbers.
To put such resources into not one but two stellar factory hubs? And then to lose them both? The loss in industrial capacity would be immeasurable. It could collapse the humans and their republic. The loss of such great technical and manufacturing hubs had brought galactic powers to their knees in the past. No reason to think it wouldn’t work on the humans.
He gave his blessings to the strike.
—-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stalemate.
The war was lost. The High Admiral of the Navy was certain of it.
Former High Admiral he thought to himself.
It wasn’t that the plan was terrible. It was the sheer cost of moving such a large amount of ships and supplies. And at such breakneck speed. How could you move, gather, organize, and push with 9 fleets in less than 4 weeks? How do you even coordinate such a thing? There would be losses just from disrupting the set timetables for supply and patrols. The humans would notice.
These army fools were great at their own narrow expertise. But were wholly unable to grasp the intricacies of void combat and its logistics.
It takes years to build a simple cruiser. A complex dance between hundreds of competing noble bureaucracies to enable thousands of workers and tons of materials, equipment, and supplies to be ready and stockpiled just to ensure everything goes smoothly. Months to fill out the roster. Months more of training. Months still of drills and shakedown cruises. And then you have to keep them alive in battles long enough for that cruiser to start being able to reliably learn their roles and their limits.
He was positive that the plan would work but he simply could not believe that the two manufacturing nodes were so poorly defended. He would lose assets that were sorely needed on other fronts. The game of logistics was a game of expertly navigating catastrophe. And the plan would be all or nothing. That isn’t how you run a campaign even if it was foolproof. There was no proof success would bring down the humans. Hadn’t the last 230 years proven the humans staying power?
The army simply used their infantry forces as fodder. Wave after wave. Brute force. But a navy had to be smart and strategic with its resources. Elegant in its maneuvers. Decisive in its actions. To overextend was death for a fleet. And this would be the mother of all overextensions if it failed. 9 fleets were at risk. Every strategic reserve was being thrown in. They would win but at what cost?
And now, he mused, here I am. Hoping for the best of the people who ruined his career. Was it really so bad to negotiate? The Empire would probably go through violent convulsions but there had been no usurper in over six thousand years. It had always worked itself out.
He really hoped they knew what they were doing.
—-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stalemate.
Why did that word drive them out of their senses!?
Madness. Stupidity. How could so many be so blind?
It was almost certainly a trap. How could it not be? A courier ship just happens to fail. The occupant just happens to hang himself right as his air runs out? The identity easily confirmed. The personal effects were spot on.
It was all too … convenient.
The courier shouldn’t have carried such detailed plans. Though it would be a perfect way to ensure operational security of a defect in their command. He admitted that openly. But … it was simply too perfect.
It was obviously a ruse.
But you can’t convince people who do not want to be convinced.
The Emperor saw a way out of the war he never wanted to inherit and enter history as a mighty Emperor. The High Marshall could retain his position and be remembered in history as a great commander. The High Admiral had been relieved but his main objection had simply been the extent of the plan rather than the obvious bait. Other advisors and technocrats had all sided with the Emperor. Everyone wanted a way to maintain their position. And no one seemed to think on the implications if they failed.
No one listened to him simply because he was not of noble birth. He had risen to his ranks with painful attention to his work. Nothing he pointed out had even hit a nerve with anyone.
Human patrols were noticeably lacking aggression. Why?
Human naval raids had decreased by nearly 18%. Why?
Reduced ship counts in human convoy runs had been observed. Why?
The human munition supplies to 5 different systems had dropped by nearly 55%. Why?
WHY! WHY! WHY!
Where the hell was it all going!?
A counterstroke was in the works. But he and his intelligence assets had no idea where and when. And they wouldn’t have any reserves to stop such an attack if their own attack failed.
It was hard not to think that it was coming immediately after the deployment of their best strategic reserves.
What would they really find at those coordinates?
—-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stalemate.
To think it might be finally ending. All of it.
The General stared at the corpse lying on the table.
His old friend. His old battle companion.
It was finally over.
The General looked over his shoulder to ensure his staff had left him alone as he had ordered. He took off his hat and jacket. Untucked his shirt and rolled up his sleeves. And began to clean up the corpse of his friend. A man who had once saved his life on a distant battlefield. It was the least he could do.
The strain had been too much for him. The trauma of it all had driven him to drink. Eventually costing him his marriage. His career. Everything.
He couldn’t even hold onto a job in any of the industries that so sorely needed labor. The despair and the drink eventually had driven him to rage.
And that rage had led to him murdering 2 workers at his local pub one day.
The verdict had been unanimous. The sentence? Death.
But the General had conceived of a new way to honor his friend. Let him get one more blow at the enemy. The corpse of his friend had to be just right.
His friend was now a Colonel in military intelligence. He would be carrying papers to that effect. He carried a digital letter to his wife letting her know he had put the drink behind him. Tickets to a local opera on Halcyon IV. An address tablet filled with appointments with important individuals.
He also carried a report too valuable to send over an open ftl comm line. A very important report. A report that would lead to the end of the war if the enemy bought into it. But they wouldn’t find a largely undefended strategic manufacturing hub. Mines, ftl inhibitors, and death would be all they found there.
The General began rolling down his sleeves. The corpse was cleaned up a bit. But not too much. And it was good they had hung him. It would be that much harder to ascertain anything amiss.
The General wondered what peacetime might be like finally. War was all he had known.
He chided himself. There was still a war to fight. No guarantee the enemy would even believe any of it.
He sure wouldn't.

2023.05.28 17:36 ryomxri Is it okay if I go to Barnes and Nobles to read books without buying them?

I can’t really afford any books (or anything at this point) and i’m not comfortable with reading pdfs of books unless it’s literally my last option. Plus the only libraries near me have been closed for months for renovation so I don’t have any available. This would be my last option to read some books i’ve been dying to read for ages now.

2023.05.28 17:25 DestroyerOvNarcs Vitiligo - get rid of those spots, carry on with life

Hi all, I've had Vitligo since I was 6 years old. I'm going to condense some wisdom down into an easy to read post so you can just get on with your life. I've spent most of my life researching vitiligo because mine was really noticeable, and I've functionally conquered at times in my life only to have it re-emerge and have to find some other way to handle it. I believe I've now come to the ultimate knowledge and can help others. And I put the knowledge out free because no doctor should be able to make a living charging people in a compromised position to not even fully heal most of them.
This is going to be a post with a lot of Truth in it. If you can't handle it, please keep scrolling. The Truth is of immense value to people because it will help them deal with the real situation and not a fuzzy, make believe world that they don't actually belong to, and then can't understand when things just aren't working out.
1) Vitiligo puts you in a compromised position in a lot of cases because it reduces your value in society. It is considered a flaw and therefore you will have a hard time in dating and sometimes jobs, friendships etc depending on what the vitiligo looks like and it's severity. Some people get lucky but for the most part, people with vitiligo get shunned because people have the instinct to not be around those that show signs of a disease. Although vitiligo isn't a contagious disease, it looks like one. In addition, the shapes it makes on the skin can be scary such as looking like a "skull face" on top of a real face, etc so kids can start crying etc if they see someone who looks like that, no matter how nice they are. It's a real mindfuck for the person who has it. It goes without saying that it's a barrier to dating as well.
2) Doctors are making a ton of money researching vitiligo but notice how they don't just simply put an end to the vitiligo. Why would they when their whole career is based off of it? If people just got rid of it and got on with their lives, that income source would end. So you go to the doctor and are mindfucked AGAIN when you are filled with hope that a treatment might work, and it never, never does. I've tried PUVA, topical steroids (a disaster, they made me get spider veins on my ankles worsening my situation), Eximer laser (did fill in one of the areas but then created dark spots as well), and a melanocyte transplant that failed and also created a new spot on my outer thigh from the "doner" area. Looking to Doctors to provide relief has been a fail. The new JAK inhibitors, "Ruxolitnib" has a ton of warnings on the package, such as "don't use if you've ever lived near the Ohio River because parasites that are infesting your body can overwhelm your immune system" - whaaaat? Ok Skippy. I've long ago learned not to use "new cures" that come out every decade or so.
3) there is ample evidence of what is actually going on but it's not in doctors best interest to connect the dots. But I have. I went through a period of sickness that required me to take 6 years off just working on my health. During that period, I pretty much figured it out. So read on.
4) 23andMe is now widely available. In 2016 I ordered mine and spit in a cup, mailed it off and got my printout of my genes. I uploaded the raw data to Prometheaus and found out that I have a Vitamin D Receptor Mutation or VDR mutation, mine is called VDR-TAQ. I didn't understand that AT FIRST. But I kept researching. Turns out that people with VDR-TAQ only make a little bit of Vitamin D from the Sun when they are out there, compared to normal people. They operate on low D for their whole lives. Vitamin D controls the skin's pigmentation as well as many other body processes like hair, nails, bones, teeth etc. Long ago, we used to spend from sunrise to sunset outside gaining vitamin D. Then we would have enough to last us through the Winter when there is no D available in the sunlight. But we are all inside now, making anyone with low D much worse. If D gets too low for a long enough time, it will affect some people's skin pigmentation, especially if they are under stress, using up nutrients at a high rate. I came from an abusive family of alcoholics and was under a lot of stress, so my Vitligo appeared very early, at age 6. It wasn't understood so I continued to suffer low D until I figured it out at 40+. My D had consistently been low whenever measured but I wasn't told how to bring it up and why I should.
5) Bringing up your Vitamin D level isn't easy or simple. D requires cofactors in order to raise the level if you're using pills. You have to take it with magnesium and B complex or else it won't absorb. Further complicating things is that all magnesiums are not equal, you have to take a "good one", not magnesium oxide which is a cheap version that can actually harm your body instead of helping. So I took mine with magnesium bisglycinate. Also I become sick from commercial versions of the B vitamins and have to order special "activated" B so I could even take a B complex. I use the Quicksilver activated B complex liquid and it's about $50 with shipping. Was it hard to figure these things out? Yes it was. But I wanted to get better, so I did it. At the end of the day, I spent 2 summers sunning 3 times a week in a private back yard, AND supplemented with D and it's cofactors especially in winter, and my level did go up but not all the way, so I ended up buying a Sperti vitamin D light that cost me about $400. This is not PUVA which for most people does not work. This is just a regular Vitamin D light that gives off UVB rays like the sun's. Using this light, I began to have productive winters where I didn't have Seasonal Affective Disorder and see real progress on my Vitiligo. I also use a cream directly on the spots that contains vitamin D and A called Infadolan that I order online, it's about $20 for 3 tubes.
6) Since I began raising my vitamin D level with supplementation, sunning and a SPERTI UVB sunlamp, my vitilgo has slowly gone away. But there are some areas that refuse to budge. My lower abdomen is one of them. I feel that this is because there is no dark hair on the area, and it's also the largest. It also gets the least sun. Areas that have hair repigment much easier that those that don't (the pigment cells live in the hair follicles) - also areas that get sun every single day like the face. It's well known that most people find the face much easier to repigment than other areas of the body. I feel that this is because the melanocytes there get stimulation with sunlight almost every day.
7) I've read that some people get vitligo in response to chemicals found in rubber - my most persistent spots are where I used to wear rubber next to my skin growing up such as the elastic in sandals or girl's underwear. I also used to wear a latex mini skirt in my teens and early 20s, and ended up with a band of depigmentation where the skirt rested against my lower abdomen. These are very stubborn areas to treat. My advice would be if someone has vitligo, stay away from rubber, latex etc. resting against their skin. It's not necessary. Also stay away from skin bleaching agents - I got more spots from using a skin lightening cream that I got from a beauty store to take care of dark areas that had developed in intimate areas. Don't use those creams.
8) to make it through life, I've had to use camoflages for my vitiligo. I have worked as a performer and needed to appear "normal". Often, people with vitiligo are beautiful and vibrant people who have amazing gifts. Ive found to my surprise that they are often in the entertainment industry (Michael Jackson, etc). What has worked in my particular case, is using non toxic spray tans and mousses - so far I've found that Sephora Sun and Loving Tan are 2 of the least toxic. Use the Yuka app to determine the toxicity of a product. Don't use really toxic stuff as body makeup, it can affect your health. In a small glass cup, I mix the 2 mousses together into a shade that approximates my skin tone, and let it melt in to a liquid in front of a fan or heater. I use a Q tip dipped in this liquid to coat the spot initially, then use a wet washcloth to blend the edges so that there isn't such a sharp contrast between the areas. After adding that layer, I then load the rest of the liquid into a small rechargable spray gun that you can find on Amazon for about $100. I spray the areas with the spray tan artfully and enhance my abs, bustline etc while I am at it and end up with a pretty good look that can fool most people. This coating lasts for a day or 2. It takes about 30-45 minutes to re-coat myself. I usually give myself a day or 2 rest between applications. But sometimes I have to do it back to back.
8) I'm still only 3 years into using the Sun and a UVB light as a treatment for vitiligo. I've seen great progress, but the most stubborn areas aren't gone. I did, however get rid of most of the areas. When I think about how miserable I was with the amount of vitiligo I had, I want to cry. I got it to where people don't stare at me in the street, on my own - and that is very exemplary. Areas that have almost no vitligo now - face, arms, hands, chest, upper stomach, shins, thighs, lower back. Areas i still have it - ankles, foot tops, underarms, private area, lower abdomen. There is a process called MicroArt that can tattoo over those areas. It's a form of permanent makeup. At the end of the day, I want it all gone and don't want to have to deal with it at all, so I may end up getting MicroArt over the areas that are remaining so I can stop with the spray tan and just be normal. The MicroArt isn't a 100% solution because it's a permanent makeup and can't change color with tanning like your normal pigment can, but I bet it could be a 90% solution, and that might have to be the best result for me in a timely manner. You could get a professional spray tan over the Microart in the summer so it would all match, or do it yourself. I don't want to have to pursue a cure for the rest of my life. Had my parents been aware that this was a low D gene and a low nutrition problem, maybe I could have been saved in childhood and never had to go through dating and all the rest with vitligo. But unfortunately, I was the one who had to put the time/effort into finding these things out as an adult and that took precious time. MicroArt is expensive just so you know. Maybe you can find a camoflage tattoo artist who could do a servicable/acceptable job who isn't Microart and who wouldn't charge as much - more and more are popping up across the country.
9) a noteworthy site is this woman, The Vit Pro, who figured some of these things out on her own, and had a lot of success in regaining her pigment. Again, it's someone who simply took the time to figure it out on her own. I think you will find more help from individuals like me and her than from the doctors, sadly. I have seen A FEW success stories where someone was healed by a doctor, but not many. And did they stay that way? This is her site - thevitpro dot com. Good luck!

2023.05.28 17:25 porneiastar My current situation

My current situation
I am so upset I let it get to this point. The worst part is I work in healthcare and I am so embarrassed to work with my patients. Im embarrassed that my coworkers will notice and be grossed out. If I keep my nails done, gel, dip or acrylic this doesnt happen. Im hoping these will begin to heal in the next few days so that I can go get some acrylics put on so they can grow out and my skin can heal. But I cant even go into a nail salon like this. It literally throbs and hurts so much. Picking up objects and handling things hurt. I hate this so much but I know there is healing around the corner. Posting this to remind myself not to let it get this bad again.

2023.05.28 17:21 pennygirl28 specific dateline episode

I was at a nail salon yesterday, and there was an episode of dateline playing inaudibly. I only caught parts of it due to where I was sitting, but it seemed that the victim was an Asian woman/teenage girl. There was a text exchange shown where a man texted a friend to come over and specified “no sex”. She seemed weirded out and responded something like “lol no sex? We’re like brother and sister”. At the end, there was a thin blonde women in a prison uniform. The impression I got was that maybe she and a boyfriend had conspired to murder the victim? I wasn’t able to find the right channel in TV listings to see what was playing.

2023.05.28 17:17 Schillander Hi all! Especially anyone with knowledge of Swedish genealogy!

I have been hitting the brick wall for many years now with the mystery of Carl Petter Schylander and Catharina. So I need all the help I can get!

I and several others in Norway have long tried to find out about the origins of two Swedes who immigrated to Nordland on the coast of Norway. Namely the couple Carl Petter (b. c. 1764 - 28 April 1823) and Catharina PehrsdotteOlsdotter (b. c. 1764 - 1842). It is my ancestor which makes it interesting for me, but the circumstances of their coming to Norway is an exciting mystery in itself. Exactly when and why they came to Norway is a mystery. These were turbulent years in Europe, Denmark-Norway and in Sweden, so moving without further ado from Sweden via Nasafjell to Nesna and Dønnes in Norway was not an everyday occurrence. Immigration from Sweden to Norway and vice versa is not new, in the second half of the 19th century 100,000 moved from Sweden to Norway, a full three-quarters of the foreign population in the 1900 census was from Sweden. But this was after liberalization policies that had solved compulsory service, the obligation for the propertyless to take up work, ceased in Norway only in 1854, and the tradition of taking up new service only in spring and autumn persisted longer. The passport requirement was abolished even later, first in 1860.

At the end of the Great Nordic War and until the peace of Nystadt in 1721, it became clear that Sweden had to have a fleet that could fight near the coast and in the archipelago. To take up the fight with Russia's new galley fleet that was ravaging the Swedish coast. The Swedish naval fleet was not created to fight in the archipelago. Tsar Peter the Great had in his service a Dalmatian Greek sailor, Admiral Count Ivan Botsis, who had previously served in the Venetian fleet and learned there to build galleys. A rowing galley that made it possible to attack even when the wind was calm. So after the peace of Nystadt, the Swedish leadership decided that the naval fleet should acquire a number of galleys and build a galley fleet. The galeiflåtta was stationed at Skeppsholmen in Stockholm and the squadron came to be called Stockholm's squadron. The fleet became known as Arméns flotta or Skärgårdsflottan and existed from 1756 to 1826. The fleet consisted of smaller vessels that could easily navigate and fight in the Swedish archipelago, corresponding to the Norwegian fleet force often called Roflotiljen. By royal decree 18 October 1756, the army fleet was officially created and was thereby separated from the naval fleet. The fleet's founder Augustin Count Ehrensvärd (1710-1772) and his son, Admiral Carl August Count Ehrensvärd (1745-1800), became commander from 1784 to 1790 of the fleet, which was developed with, among other things, knowledge from similar fleets in the Mediterranean. Gustaf 3's Russian war broke out in 1788, at the outbreak of the war the ancestor Carl Petter was approx. 22 years old. Two years into the war in 1790, former commander of the volunteer company, lieutenant colonel Johan Gustaf count Lagerbielke (1745-1812) as commander of the Stockholm Squadron.
Skeppsholm became Sweden's naval headquarters when the naval staff moved there in 1634 from the nearby old Skeppsholm, which is now called Blasieholmen. But not long after during the Scanian War 1675-1679, it was decided to move the military base to the newly founded Karlskrona in Blekinge to secure the newly acquired regions in the south. Skeppsholm's glory days as the navy's headquarters were over, but military activity did not end. It is here that first source of Carl Petter appears as volunteer no. 29 in the premier major's company at Skeppsholm's assembly in Stockholm where the fleet was stationed. Skeppsholm assembly in Stockholm also known as the Admiralty assembly or Holmkyrkan's assembly. Flottan's assembly was a non-territorial military assembly. Christina Charlotta Schylander is baptized here on 12 May 1794 by midwife Johanna Berggren. Pastor at Flottan Natanael Larsson Lithander (1790-1808) confirms three days later the baptism of the daughter of Carl Petter Schylander and his wife Catharina Pehrsdotter. Among the witnesses were lieutenant colonel high-born herr Axel Otto count Cronhielm (1751-1809) of Hakunge and lieutenant Ekstedt. Christina Charlotta does not appear again, and since it was an emergency baptism, it is likely that she died young.
The volunteers were enlisted personnel, i.e. permanent employees. They were also called "marinärer" and their main task was to operate the naval artillery. During the period Carl Petter was a "volantaire" Finland was and a central part of the area the Skærgårdsflottan was supposed to protect. The Skærgårdsflottan's greatest victory was the Battle of Svensksund in 1790 when a larger Russian force was defeated, but it was not enough to stop Russia finally conquering the Duchy of Finland from Sweden in 1809. At this time it was Johan Gustaf count Lagerbielke (1745-1812 ) who was commander-in-chief from 1790-1811. Carl Petter was around 30 years old in 1795, which makes it highly probable that he had all served in Gustav III's Russian war from 1788-1790, he would have been 24 years old at the outbreak of the war. If that was the case, he maybe participated in the Battle of Svensksund in 1789.
Carl Petter is listed as the father again the following year on 17. Sep. 1795 at the baptism of his son Carl Petter Sylander in Lövsta, Ed socken. He is still a volunteer at Armén's fleet and his wife Catharina Sylander is stated to be 28 years old. The godfathera are Lieutenant-Colonel count Cronhielm, his stepmother high-born countess Mrs. Christina Cronhielm, nee Baroness Rålamb, Fänrik (ranks above sergeant and below sub-lieutenant.) Mr. Conrad Vilhelm Ankarcrona (1733-1809) of Runsa and his daughter Miss Margreta Elisabeth Ankarcrona (1777-1838). Both Ankarcrona and Cronhielm had estates in the area.
Nasa silver works
Carl Petter and Catharina probably came around around 1800 to Norway from "Nasa Seilfver Grufvor in Pitteå Lappmark, Ærjeplougs Sochn." The mines were located by the mountain Nasa about 36 miles from Piteå, not far from the border with Norway. There was some traffic between the mines and Norway, probably per horse hoof. The Nasaleden, as this route is called today, mostly ran from Piteå. Nasafjell's silver works was a silver mining operation in Pite Lappmark that took place during two periods, 1635–1659 and 1770–1810. The management of The mill was taken over by the notary Fredrik Jonsson in 1797, a man with big plans but little experience of silver works. He soon got the mill people against him, and the workers who had been permanent residents in Adolfstrøm got tired and moved from there. Mining was therefore carried out on a small scale, and hut density was at an all-time low in 1797-1800. In the autumn of 1801, Fredrik Jonsson moved from Lapland and later went bankrupt. His rights in the company were transferred to one of his creditors, Major Georg Bogislaus Staël von Holstein (1740-1814) in Stockholm. He made great efforts for the Lapland colony station and "cultivation", but did not succeed in saving the silver works. Even with extensive repairs and rebuilds in Adolfstrøm led by the former geschworner at Dannemora mine, Leonard Horneman, silver production remained insignificant. Staël von Holstein became more indebted, and in 1810 he left Adolfstrøm never to return. Mining activity on Nasafjellet and in Adolfstrøm thus ceased completely. In 1821, the entire cottage facility burned down, except for the dwelling house. With this information many have assumed that Carl Petter and family just came via the area, and did not work or stay there.
Dr. Wayne Mitchell said that his grandmother claims that either Carl or Catherina came from a noble family and that they came from Russia. She also claimed that they had to flee the country and when they reached the border crossing between Sweden and Norway that they bribed the border guards with jewels. Harald Bertrand Eckhold from Kragerø told in 1988 that his mother-in-law Åsta Marie Isaksen (1898-1974), great-great-granddaughter of Carl Petter senior, told him in 1956 that Carl Petter Sjølander came to Norway with a small chest full of jewels. And that Carl Petter had said "No one should know who my mother is." That the Sylander family had some noble origin is probably very unlikely, but that it came to Norway in the form of them fleeing from something is a possibility. There is indeed a family with a similar name from Kalmar that was ennobled on 10 June 1812 with registry number 2225. The family possibly starts with Corporal Sven Christoffersson and Catharina Strømsten, who are believed to be the parents of Jonas Sylvander, born around 1700. He married in the 1730s with Sara Anna Hallenberg (1711-1785 in Målilla), daughter of Sheriff Gabriel Hallenberg and Maria Ljungstrøm (-1774 in Ljungby). Their son Johan Gabriel S. (1767-1833) in Stockholm married for the first time to Eva Elisabet Molin (1738-1776). They first had their daughter Anna Britta Sylvander (1762-1844) married to the ship clerk Clas Johan Zander. And then his son Josua Sylvander. Interestingly, Josua marries for the third time countess Lovisa Gustava Ottiliana Cronhielm af Hakunge (1788-1842), daughter of the previously named count Cronhielm and his wife baroness Amalia Fredrika Carlsdtr. Pechlin von Løwenbach (1867-1824).
Catharina's parentage.A possible person who may be identical, with Catharina Pehrsdotter Schillander but very uncertain, is Katharina Olofsdotter born on 7 April 1757 in Arjeplog, daughter of Olof Mårtenson "Nybyggare, expeditionslänsman och snickare i Sakkavare, Arjeplog" born ca. 1728 and died on 19 March 1786 and his wife Karin "Caisa" Persdotter born on 1731 and died on 15 November 1792 also in Sakkavare, Arjeplog. Olof Mårtensson and Karin Persdotter were married in Arjeplog on 11 April 1757. Karin Persdotter was the daughter of PePehr Larsson and Karin Olofsdotter Laestander. Year of birth is very uncertain but probably around 1710. At the court in Arjeplog on 30 January 1731 where her father Olof Laestander puts "church pastor" Sjul Granberg's son Per Larsson before the court, Karin is stated to be 24 years old but the following year, at the court on 26 February 1732, she is noted to be 19 years old. After Karin O. Laestander's death in 1739, Karin Persdotter was adopted by her maternal uncle Petter Olofsson Laestander. This Katharina Olofsdotter moved from Arjeplog around 1780 when one of the parents died, this must be the father Pehr Larsson, since the mother Karin O. Lestander is said to have died in 1739. The adoptive parents, i.e. her uncle Petter O. Lestander and his wife Margareta Svedberg cannot be, since they died later than that. Nasafjell is not far from Arjeplog. And especially considering Catharina uses two patronymics during her life, both Persdatter and Olsdatter, which is consistent with the possible use of patronymics if she did not really want to associate herself with her biological father, which one might think is the case if the reader between the lines. But again this is speculation!
In Norway.
The first definitive trace of Carl Petter in Norway is at Dønnes manor during the census in 1801. Carl Petter Schillander is listed here as the first servant of five to a visiting merchant Berg. Furthermore, in addition to the lords of the farm, there is a Lapland forster boy, eight maids and a widow "in the house of charity". The lord of the house is the widow of lieutenant colonel Isach Jørgen Coldevin (1724-1793), housewife Maria Anna Emahus Tønder (1731-1802) and their son and heir war councilor Hans Emahus Tønder Coldevin (1754-1835). Daughter Else Maria Coldevin (1753-). And in the "house of charity" the widow Anna Cathrine Tobine Sommer (1725-1811), sister of Isach Jørgen. The same census is Catharina Pedersdtr. Schillander with the children Carl Petter and Caroline stated as lodging with a homestead Slåttvik not far from Dønnes with the homestead family Gabriel Andersen (1752-1813) and his third wife Aleth Sophia Johansdtr. (1764-). Whether Carl Petter remained a servant for a long time with the Coldevin family is uncertain. But in 1803 they had a son Isak Jørgen Dass Siølander, baptized in Lurøy church named after the lords of Dønnes and Lurøy. It is Isach Jørgen's eldest daughter Stinchen Catharina Coldevin (1752-1845) and her husband skipper and merchant Christen Dass (1743-1791) who own Lurøy estate. Their son Isach Jørgen Coldevin Dass (1772-1836) is among the godfathers at Isach Jørgen Dass Siølander's baptism.
In 1815, Moflaget farm was vacant. Carl Petter and Catharina must have well liked with the venerable housewife Dass since she wanted them as tenants at Moflaget. Housewife Dass owned Sør-Solvær including Moflaget until 1825. This was an inheritance from Dønnes estate and not originally part of Lurøy estate. In the following land registry, Carl Petter and Catharina take over the building on the entire Moflaget in 1816. Two years later on 10 October 1817, the first of the children, Karl Petter Schiølander, marries Maren Hansdtr. Slåtterøy. And not long after at Solvær in 1818, the first grandchild Katrina Margrethe Sckelander arrives, unfortunately she will also be the first grandchild to perish when she all dies the following year. But all in 1823, Carl Petter probably perishes when he is lost at sea on 28 April 1823 at the age of approx. 58 years. But he leaves behind a family that will have many descendants in Norway, USA and more.

Sources
The first source in Norway is the census of 1801 (Census 1801 for 1828P Nesna parish. Permanent page Link. Permanent picture link) where they are referred to as Carl Petter and Cathrina Pedersdatter Schillander. Where he is the first servant on Dønnes estate and she is Swedish and earns her living with hand work "Er svendsk og ernærer sig med haandarbeyd". Converted from the given age, they were born about 1764 and their son Carl Petter junior, 6 years old, i.e. born about. 1795. Furthermore, they and their descendants are well documented in Norway where they have many descendants.During the Napoleonic Wars, conscription was introduced in northern Norway and crew rolls were kept. Carl Petter is listed here with Stockholm as his birthplace in 1809 and 1811 (microfilm NT195). Converted from the stated age from the crew rolls, he should have been born in about 1766. In 1832, at her daughter Caroline Frederikke Sjølander's wedding, her place of birth is given as "Nasa Brug in Westerboten in Sverrig." (Nordland fylke, Lurøy, Ministerial book no. 839A03 (1825-1862), Ekteviede 1833, page 378. Permanent page link. Permanent image Link.). Slightly converted if the source is correct, she was born before 14 October 1803.
There are many sources about the family in Norway, but none that provide any more information about their Swedish origins.

Some variations of the family name in Norway: 1801: Schillander (2x sources), 1805: Siölander (1x source), 1817: Schiölander (1x source), 1818: Sckelander (1x source), 1820: Sjölander (17x sources), 1823: Schjolander ( 1x source), 1823: Sylander (4x source), and more. I know that the ending -ander means man. But I'm not sure what the first link can come from. I have speculated whether it could come from Latin silva or Greek xýlon both meaning forest. But as likely as name researcher Eva Brylla answered me "Hi Mats! In Sweden the old name types are tied to the different places. Names in Greek. names with Latin endings in –(i)us. Often they were formed into a place name, like Sylvanus or Sylvander into a place name Skog = forrest. Schillander can therefore be formed into a place name in Skill(-), e.g. Skillberga . One such example was a Swede on his way to "London and beyond" via Ålesund in 1859. His name was Nils Peder Sylander and he came from Silonger parish in Sundsvall. But after searching a bit, there are quite a few places in Sweden and Finland that you can use as a starting point to form the first part of the family name.

2023.05.28 17:13 Steelthahunter I just learned Paizo sells pocket sized books

I was at Barnes and Noble yesterday and we have like a really small section for TTRPGs at the one where I live, mostly DnD stuff, but the very bottom row is PathfindeStarfinder books. And that is where I was looking when I found out that the softcover books are half the size, I did not know this before, and now I'm 100% buying all of my Paizo books as soft covers, bc theyre so much easier to carry around and look through. So when Player Core 1 comes out I'm 100% doing that.
P.S. I did get the core rulebook for starfinder while I was there, not super relevant to the group but im excited about it so I wanted to mention it.

2023.05.28 16:31 testaccount1290 I was beaten again today by my dad

We are pakistani. Im 17m and my dad has abused me in my childhood. He has abused me so much in the past and during my childhood. When he gets angry, he takes it out on us kids even for stupid reasons like me going to the bathroom (i was maybe 8 or 9) when he wanted to use the bathroom which was actually not the reason because he wanted to go to his sisters wedding in Pakistan (we are in the UK) and my mum was in her early stages of cancer so he didn't want my dad to go so he beat me so my mum was forced to say yes. We have left the house so many times with my mum because he would get abusive over stuff like my mum not letting him send money to his brother in Pakistan (he refused to get a job and we were struggling). He threw a tantrum during my brothers 18th birthday so we had to leave the house and my mum returned ingredients of his birthday meal (he told the butchers what he did and they thought of him differently because of that. He also destroyed my mums cancer medication because my mum didnt have any energy to cook. Once I had locked the door with the wrong key of the attic so it somehow locked but couldn't unlock and I ran out of the house (my mum died that same year) and ended up going to my uncles house where i stayed until he calmed down (he used a hammer to open the door lock). My dad works nightshift at the weekend and goes sleep during the day.
My little brother is autistic and he never stops annoying me. He used to cut me with his nails and rip them my skin and I still have scars from ages ago all over my arm. I got my door key to lock the door to stop him from annoying me. (My dad never did anything about it and would allow him to do this to me)
Today I made my little brother breakfast and woke him up early so he can eat. I made him some hot chocolate and went into the living room where the xbox is. I was playing Minecraft and he came in. I told him to get out but he didn't and he took my controller and was messing up my world. I turned the xbox off and he took my water bottle and ran off with it(usually what he always does). My stepmum was there cooking in the kitchen and she tried to get the water bottle off him but she couldn't and my brother threw it on the floor I was very annoyed but I tried to go back but I think he threw his tablet at me and sexually assaulted me (he usually does that). The tablet hit my hip bone and it hurt so much and I lost it. I tried to kick my brother but I ended up pushing him to the door and he started screaming. I ran to the attic (my bedroom) and locked the door.
My dad woke up and my brother told him to beat me up. He came kind of calm telling me to open the door to 'see me' he asked me why I pushed him and I told him the situation in a loud voice (I was still angry) and he told me to open the door. His voice was getting louder and was turning into that voice he uses when he is angry. He started slamming on the door and told me to open the door and he was going to get the screw driver out and unscrew the door. I was apologising and was terrified. His wife came up and begged him to stop but he got a hammer I think out and started hitting it on the door telling me to open it. It was so loud I thought he would break the door down. I heard him getting some tools and that is when I opened it. I tried running out but he had a hammer and was telling me to go back upstairs(the door is where the stairs start) his wife was behind him and trying to get the hammer out of his hands and I pushed the hammer away. He pointed to the bed and he almost stepped on my cat as he was really really angry. He went on my bad and put his knee on my legs and started screaming at me whilst slapping me. I begged him to stop and apologised so many times to him and he was talking about hitting my knees with a hammer or drilling into it since the '3 months in jail would be ok'. He calmed down enough to tell me to apologise to my brother. I was hysterical and I was hyperventilating and I apologised so many times to my brother my and my brother was normal and said with a sort of smile 'I accept his apology'. My dad kept trying to get a hammer out and his wife begged him to stop. He said it was my fault and how I wasted his 15 minutes because he was going to my uncles house before going to work as my auntie is going to Pakistan. My clothes has his spit all over it and I went upstairs. He kept blaming me saying how he won't get to eat cause of me and how he has a 12 hour shift. He told my brother that if I ever not let him touch my cats (he is usually squeezing them or scaring them and chasing them around the house so that is why I don't let my brother touch them) then he will sell my cats and then he will drill into my legs and I will remember this lesson for the rest of my life. He is out of the house now and was coming into my room blaming me for him losing his voice. I'm just so glad to not have a stick or my laptop or anything like that near my bed. I can't call the police and I have been writing this for 30 minutes. Thanks for reading

Need help identifying a bug based on description
Hello everyone,
I saw a bug on my hand in bed last night that looked like my rough illustration above. In addition to that, here are some details:
Size: Roughly the length of a pinky nail. My picture is a bit smaller than it actually looked.
Color: blackish body with brownish underbelly
Appearance: I thought it was a big ant, at first, but looking closer, it looked more like an ant-spider. It was split into two appendages- its head and a long butt. The head was a bit square and short. The butt was longer and looked like a carpet beetle larvae (just the butt did.) if I can recall, it seemed to have about 4 legs at its head and smaller ones on its body/butt. I couldn’t tell you how many, though.
Upon looking up bugs online, I can say that it looked like a beefier head lice or termite. But pictures I see of termites, the legs tend to look too sparse and the heads look too round to fit how this bug looked.
I squished it in my panic because I wasn’t sure if it would bite me. When I squished it, the body literally just disappeared and all that was left were spots of blood on my hands. The blood was greenish-brown in color. There was no crunch. It was as if I squished air.
Speed: It moved pretty slow by bug standards. I was able to get a decent look at it and it just ran around my cupped hand. It felt light on my hand as it moved but the butt didn’t drag. It’s back was supported by smaller legs. Although, the front legs were bigger and seemed to be carrying the momentum of the bug.
Location: East coast, near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Some notable finds from my own research- the leg span is shorter than a jumping spider. It looked similar to one but it didn’t drag its butt as it had smaller legs attached to it.
Thanks in advance!
