2023.05.27 15:39 nicisachampion First Build- Just Looking For Some Input On My Parts List

I'm normally one who lingers in this subreddit but I've determined that I may need some help.
Currently, I'm not in in the states and will not be for another few months however, I have started saving up a chunk of money to dedicate to a PC. My friends all have one now and I have started to get lonely with my PS5. I'm no PC guru, nor am I looking to build something super outrageous. I am just trying to build something that can stand up in today's gaming world while also allowing me to upgrade somewhat in the future if necessary, I'm thinking 3-5 years from now.
Anyway, I've used PCPartpicker to create a list of what would probably work best for me based on the small amounts of research I have done. I would like to share it with the world and see if y'all think it could work for what I am looking for or not. Please don't judge too harshly as it is my very first plan for a build!
CPU: Intel Core i7-13700K 3.4 GHz 16-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Corsair iCUE H100i ELITE CAPELLIX 75 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Motherboard: MSI MAG B660 TOMAHAWK WIFI DDR4 ATX LGA1700 Motherboard
Memory: Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory
Storage: Samsung 980 Pro 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive
Video Card: MSI MECH 2X OC Radeon RX 6700 XT 12 GB Video Card
Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic ATX Full Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair RM850x (2021) 850 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 11 Home OEM - DVD 64-bit
Case Fan: Lian Li UNI SL120 58.54 CFM 120 mm Fans 3-Pack
Monitor: Asus TUF Gaming VG27AQ 27.0" 2560 x 1440 165 Hz Monitor
In total, this is almost perfectly within what I'm looking to spend at around 2000$. If y'all see somewhere I can improve, please be my guest and let me know!

2023.05.20 17:30 tagabukidly DIY openwrt router

I am interested in building my own openwrt router. I would like to have the ability for it to repeat for a long haul link or 2 and/or provide AP access all on different radios. I would like it to fit in a weatherproof case too. I am not a hardware guru, but I am imagining a single board computer with the ability to hold 4 radios, at least. Are intel wifi cards (pcie?) a good choice?

2023.05.14 13:23 Selfes Can't install elixir on Gentoo Prefix

EDIT: Solved
Hi, I just installed gentoo prefix on my Steam deck to check out gentoo. After a (hopefully) successful installation using the bootstrap-prefix.sh, I tried to install a few packages.
When I try to install dev-lang/elixir, I get the following problem building erlang:
$ emerge -av elixir These are the packages that would be merged, in order: Calculating dependencies... done! Dependency resolution took 1.28 s. As far as I can see, openssl should be installed in the prefix:
$ emerge -pv dev-libs/openssl These are the packages that would be merged, in order: Calculating dependencies... done! Dependency resolution took 0.98 s. [ebuild R ] dev-libs/openssl-1.1.1t-r3:0/1.1::gentoo USE="asm tls-compression weak-ssl-ciphers -rfc3779 -sctp -sslv3 -static-libs -test -tls-heartbeat -vanilla -verify-sig" CPU_FLAGS_X86="(sse2)" 0 KiB
If I'm not wrong, libcrypto should also be installed:
$ ls -la ~/.gentoo/uslib64/libcrypt* lrwxrwxrwx 1 deck deck 29 May 5 09:57 /home/deck/.gentoo/uslib64/libcrypt.so -> ../../lib64/libcrypt.so.2.0.0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 deck deck 16 May 11 05:25 /home/deck/.gentoo/uslib64/libcrypto.so -> libcrypto.so.1.1 -rwxr-xr-x 1 deck deck 2329032 May 6 07:02 /home/deck/.gentoo/uslib64/libcrypto.so.1.0.0 -rwxr-xr-x 1 deck deck 2873256 May 11 05:26 /home/deck/.gentoo/uslib64/libcrypto.so.1.1
I also can't remove the ssl USE flag from erlang since elixir depends on it? Not sure what else I am missing.
If anyone can help me I would be very grateful.

2023.05.14 04:32 spongeworthy90 MBP M2 for Lightroom Classic and photo editing

I'm needing an upgrade from my MBP 2017 (13") laptop, main use is for photo editing via LrC and sometimes photoshop (95% of time it's LrC).
I'm currently torn between the options for a 14" as I'm not a tech guru and need help, but main priority is speed for LrC as it's very very slow on my current laptop (16 GB memory, Intel HD Graphics 630 1536 MB, 1TB external hard drive for catalogs and storage but I know it's the graphics slowing me down).
Will the below be enough for photo editing and using the new Denoise AI feature in LrC which currently takes 3-5 mins per image for me (I shoot with the Canon R5 so images are roughly 40-50MP, I know this file size also plays a part in the lag):
  1. Apple M2 Pro with 12‑core CPU, 19‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine, 1TB storage and 32 GB unified memory (AUD $3999)
  2. Apple M2 Max with 12‑core CPU, 30‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine, 1TB storage and 32 GB unified memory (AUD $4999) or
  3. Apple M2 Max with 12‑core CPU, 30‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine, 1TB storage and 64 GB unified memory (AUD $5600)
I actually wanted to spend roughly $4000 only but if option 2 or 3 will last me 7-10 years then I'll cop the amount as I know the unified memory and GPU can't be upgraded down the track.
TIA!
EDIT: There's also a refurbished 16" MacBook Pro Apple M1 Max Chip with 10‑Core CPU and 32‑Core GPU, 32GB unified memory and 1TB storage (AUD $4029)

Hvala i pozdrav.

2023.05.01 16:38 nutraxfornerves NESARA/GESARA meets Great Currency Reset meets 10 Days of Darkness

As I cruise around my usually (un)reliable sources, I am seeing an increase in traffic about the 10 Days of Darkness. For those unfamiliar with this, it will be an emergency broadcast telling everyone to go home. The Military™ will be in control. Every means of communication will be shut down, except 24 hour a day broadcasts of all the arrests and trials of the Bad People. Afterwards, we will all enter into a period of peace and prosperity under the (nonexistent) Constitution of 1776 or some such. This has been going to habben any day now for many years.
What I am seeing now is that the 10 Days will trigger NESARA/GESARA (scroll down to “Dove of Oneness” to get to the scam & conspiracy theory.). That in turn will trigger the Great Currency Reset.
The Great Currency Reset comes in several flavors, but the one here involves the world converting to a single gold-backed currency or every country converting to a gold-backed currency. If you buy worthless currency such as Iraqi Dinars or Zimbabwean dollars, you will be able to redeem it for a huge amount of the new currency. Another scam has emerged. If you buy lots of a particular cryptocurrency, you will be able to convert it for zillions. In fact, the US has pledged to move all US Treasury funds to that crypto.
The Zimbabwean dollar scam involves bonds. In order to buy bonds, you must provide a plan for a humanitarian project you will do with some of your profit. The GCR and crypto believers have now added that humanitarian project to their redemption plans. In addition, you must now be assessed to be a swell human being in general. Charlie Ward, a GCR guru, recently laid out the new procedure. Judy Byington of Dinar Chronicles has done a good summary of his broadcast. (Giving credit where credit is due, she may be posting utter hooey, but she does a good job of laying it out.)
I found a big proponent of the crypto version. Won’t give him publicity, but you can be sure of his reliability as he is “Son of the most living GOD in heaven. Messenger of GOD’S REVELATION,” plus he has ties to Charlie Ward.
In his version, there will be a two-part NESARA implementation. There will be 3 days of darkness followed by implementation of NESARA, new quantum financial system, new governments, all that. The only shutdown will be all financial markets.
This will be followed by 10 days of disclosure to implement the crypto NESARA. All phones & internet will be shut down, except for special instructions to be sent to your phone. Then we all convert to crypto or something.
…put your 2 pages for your Humanitarian Project (take 2 copies) into a 3 hole punched Clear Cover Presentation Folder. They are getting hard to find....get them now.❤️🚨🦁❤️🔥📯🚨✅
Think about it. You don't have to go to LAS VEGAS to get ALL the TRUTH, on the Whole Process, right from Our Creator. He's the Truth Giver, I'm just the Messenger to give you exactly what HE INSTRUCTS me to do.🚨🦁❤️🔥📯🚨✅
When someone complained that they were weary of waiting, he said
Weary should be removed from our VOCABULARY for the SIMPLE REASON, JESUS certainly PAID a PRICE for our RANSOM knowing this TIME had already been created for us. None of us would have made it thru, but we can w/ this because it DEFINES us as His Sons & Daughters.🚨🦁❤️🔥📯🚨✅

2023.04.25 21:15 NETINT-Experts ASIC-Based 8K Encoding can Save Power and Money

ASIC-Based 8K Encoding can Save Power and Money
Back before “politically correct” was a phrase or even a concept, it wasn’t unusual to hear someone say, “there’s more than one way to skin a cat.” Speaking totally metaphorically, of course, and with apologies in advance to dour cat lovers without a sense of humor, that still is the case.
Here we look at two ways to produce an 8K60 contribution stream. The first alternative was presented by video guru Colleen Henry in her Demuxed talk, Building an 8K Encoder + Live Streaming Platform, which you can find here.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXO4PmvLA3Q
OPTION 1: BUILDING YOUR OWN 8K ENCODER.
As Colleen describes in the presentation, “the Ryzen Threadripper 3990x is the chip that we went with. It has 64 cores and 128 logical threads. And I’m sitting next to it right now, and I’m going to pull out my thermal camera and just show how hot this thing is (she was joking). It’s hilarious. But you have to have a very multithreaded job for it. But, you know, the SVT line from Intel and x264 does a good job of it.”
You can correctly assume from Colleen’s comments that encoding 8K video is a very challenging operation for any computer, and that it would require a substantial portion of the 128 cores available on that processor to get it done, plus the two NVIDIA graphics cards specified in the video.
TABLE 1. HIGH-LEVEL COST AND POWER CONSUMPTION OF THE 8K SYSTEM FOR A SINGLE AND TEN STREAMS.
Table 1 includes the major components incorporated into Colleen’s 8K system, with cost and power requirements. Colleen did mention in her talk that less expensive technology can be used, but the main point is straightforward; you will need a very hefty and power-hungry system to produce a single 8K60 contribution stream. And, if you need ten contribution streams, you’ll have to order up to ten separate units.
Colleen’s system was for H.264, VP9, and AV1; she doesn’t mention HEVC. One system capable of live HEVC encoding is the Intel system assembled for the 2020 Olympics, documented here. Considering only the four Intel Xeon 8380H Scalable CPUs deployed on the system, power consumption would have been 1,000 watts, and the CPUs would have cost over $48,000. While producing a single stream for a one-off event like the Olympics may be justifiable, it’s not for 24/7 operation for multiple channels.

FIGURE 2. NETINT’S QUADRA VPU.
Table 2 shows what the math looks like for a single and ten units. Because Quadra’s operation is self-contained, you can run it on most low-end computers. CPU utilization is generally very low, which keeps the main CPU’s power usage down during operation.
TABLE 2. COST AND POWER CONSUMPTION FOR AN ASIC-DRIVEN SYSTEM.
For ten 8K streams in H.264, HEVC, or AV1 formats, you can buy a workstation with a U.2 expansion rack and install ten Quadras. Again, the expansion rack is the expensive part; you won’t need a hefty CPU, and the CPU will be mostly idle during operation. You can gauge the CAPEX and power savings yourself.
Summing Up
No criticism or disrespect for Colleen; she’s an incredible industry resource who makes code and other resources available on her GitHub site. Her company, Meta, has been at the forefront of the push toward green computing and recently endorsed and adapted the LCEVC codec as part of this focus. Her article is a teaching experiment designed to help readers and watchers learn to create their own streaming encoder and infrastructure; not a recommended approach for volume 8K contribution encoding. Ditto for the Intel system was clearly a technology demonstration, not a production system.
Still, these systems help make the point that while software-based 8K encoding may be possible, it’s not practical or environmentally conscious and certainly isn’t scalable. That’s where ASIC-based solutions start to shine.

2023.04.24 20:17 tylersefa I have my first AMD build picked out and I am wondering if someone with more knowledge can review it and help me out. Any guidance would be helpful!

Basically I have been out of the game of following PC parts reviews and such, and even if when I was in the game, i mostly paid attention to Intel and NVIDIA.
I am going in the AMD direction because of the last couple of years, and I was hoping someone could be my guru.
What
CAD prices!
EDIT: build has already been updated as per both of the wise commenters. Annnd the CPU was suddenly in stock at a lower price so i got it. It has begun!
What I will use it for: 1440p high frames, basically all games ever.
PCPartpicker says there could be concerns about cooler clearance in the case, but from what I understand, that is kind of always there.
It also says I will need to immediately update BIOS for motherboard but i don't think that is tooooo difficult.

Opinion: NFL's 'Lying Season' before draft means dirty tricks, misinformation are the norm
Jarrett Bell
USA TODAY
Published April 20th, 2019
It’s that time of year. Lying Season. Be careful what you believe as the NFL draft looms. Because what you hear is not necessarily rooted in the truth.
No, we’re in full swing with another type of NFL gamesmanship. Misinformation and mixed signals rank right up there in the process with 40-yard dash times and three-cone drills.
As the league embarks on celebrating its 100th season, this too, is NFL tradition.
“April should be known in the NFL as National Liars Month,” Gil Brandt, the Hall of Fame-bound, former personnel guru told USA Today Sports. “Everybody is trying to create a smokescreen, both ways.”
Every draft season, it seems there is some top prospect whose stock suddenly falls in the weeks before the draft, while others rise. Typically, word is leaked that one or multiple teams were unimpressed with an interview, or conversely, a player blew away teams with a workout or chalk talk.
And why is that?
“It increases every year,” Brandt -- once the Dallas Cowboys' personnel chief and now a media maven with NFL.com -- said of the agenda-fueled gossip. “It’s like the pole vault, where the record goes up every year. There are more smokescreens. More subterfuge. A very interesting time of year.”
This time, with the three-day draft kicking off Thursday in Nashville, it has been widely reported that Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins’ (1st round, pick 15) stock is supposedly slipping – just as Missouri’s Drew Lock and Duke’s Daniel Jones are climbing the QB charts.
Don’t buy the hype. Lock (Round 2, Pick 42) and Jones (Round 1, pick 6) are indeed projected as first-round picks, but it’s not like Haskins is chopped liver. During the combine, Haskins was viewed as the alternative opposite Kyler Murray, who is widely pegged to go No. 1 overall to the Arizona Cardinals.
Now Haskins might not be the second quarterback drafted? C’mon. He hasn’t played a game since the combine and now his draft stock is in a free-fall?
Haskins insists he isn’t sweating the gossip.
“I don’t pay attention to it,” he told USA Today Sports on Friday. “Now my friends have been asking me. My mom is like, ‘Did you see what they said?’ It doesn’t bother me.
Former Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins has been viewed as a possible alternative to Kyler Murray in the first round. “The biggest thing is to do what I have to do. Do well in the meetings. Do well with the visits. Throw the ball well in the workouts. I know I’m going to be a great NFL quarterback.”
Still, stuff is out there from all angles. For instance, Brandt warns it could be a mistake to read too much into the 30 players each team is allowed to bring for official visits – presumably because they have more than casual interest. Some teams use the visits as a sleight-of-hand move in an attempt to conceal true intentions about prospects they could draft.
Add to that the pre-draft news conferences teams conduct, where the messaging can get deep. Or comical. That will continue on Monday when Washington’s Doug Williams, Seattle’s Pete Carroll and John Schneider, San Francisco’s John Lynch and Indianapolis’ Chris Ballard will be among shot-callers at the podium.
On Thursday, Giants GM Dave Gettleman danced around the quarterback question in weighing what he might do with his second pick in the first round, 17th overall. He threw out cornerback, wide receiver or maybe … "A sports writer,” joking to throw off the scent.
Of course, it would be a bit reckless to reveal specific strategy. But Gettleman, who hailed the worth of the quarterback crop, stopped short when asked if it was better than last year’s group.
“I am not going there,” he replied. “C’mon now.”
Whatever he said, as is the case for other GMs, was likely well-scripted.
“Anything that you say into a microphone can go all over the country instantly,” Phil Savage, former Browns GM and Ravens personnel director, told USA Today Sports.
Twenty years ago, Savage pointed out, the pre-draft sessions were attended by a handful of local reporters. It was local news. Now it’s national fodder.
“Now, I’d think that every GM in the league has a session with their PR director beforehand, determining what they are going to say,” Savage said. “There’s more strategy. Certain players, there’s already a narrative and the mock drafts. Well, if you think the player is overrated and want another player, as a GM you’re going to keep pumping that narrative.”
Like Brandt, Savage was a bit stunned to hear the narrative coming out of Oakland on Friday. Reportedly, Raiders coach Jon Gruden and new GM Mike Mayock sent the bulk of the team’s scouts home because of a lack of trust. During what could be the most important draft in the franchise’s history, with Oakland holding three first-round picks, apparently only a handful of the Raiders' personnel staff will be in the mix during the draft. Clelin Ferrell 1st round, pick 4 / Josh Jacobs 1st round, pick 24 / Jonathan Joseph 1st round, pick 27)
Sure, every team runs its draft differently. Bill Belichick typically will have only four or five staff members in the Patriots’ war room during the draft (and no, Belichick didn’t give up anything during his pre-draft presser). Others fully involve scouts, even to the point of including them in open war-room discussions during the draft.
The Raiders’ apparent action, though, connects with concerns about how information – and misinformation – flows with the draft.
“I can understand why people would have some paranoia,” Savage said, alluding to the capabilities of smartphones. “I think there’s more risk than ever of having information go out of your war room.”
Yet that risk has always been part of the process. Let Brandt tell you about the 1987 draft, when he set a trap because he suspected one of his scouts leaked information to the media. In the days before the draft, he arranged the Cowboys’ draft board to appear as if the target with the 12th pick was Duke linebacker Mike Junkin – a player Brandt had no intention of drafting.
“Two days later, there’s a story by Jim Dent (in the Dallas Times Herald) saying that we were going to draft Junkin,” Brandt recalled.
The Cowboys ultimately picked defensive tackle Danny Noonan in the 12th slot. Junkin went fifth overall to the Browns – who swung a trade to move up – and wound up as a major bust with just seven starts and 20 games played in the NFL.
Did Brandt fire the scout?
“No, but we knew who did it,” he said. “And he knew we knew.”
Funny, but that brings to mind another episode with Brandt during the ‘80s, when I worked as a writer for the Cowboys’ team newspaper. The year before the Junkin experiment, Brandt told me he would use the Cowboys’ first-round pick on UCLA receiver Mike Sherrard.
Knowing the draft information twists, even back then, I didn’t believe Brandt.
A few days later, he drafted Sherrard, 18th overall.
I reminded Brandt of my suspicion. He laughed.
“Yeah, I remember,” he said. “I told you because I trusted you!”
Trust? With draft intel? Seems odd. Brandt tipping me off about Sherrard now seems like a classic smokescreen on top of a smokescreen. It figures. With the NFL draft, there’s a fine line between shooting straight and being bamboozled.
Over the past couple weeks, seemingly odd info has come out. Perhaps misinformation.
  1. Commanders said Howell was not their starter, now suddenly they are likely to stick with him.
  2. 1st overall? Bryce for weeks, then CJ for weeks, now Bryce again.
  3. The Colts have been tied to drafting a rookie 4th overall, now articles arguing they will pass are showing up.
What are your thoughts?

Memory transcription subject: Chief Hunter Isif, Arxur Dominion Sector Fleet
Date [standardized human time]: December 12, 2136
A diplomatic resolution to the battle of Sillis didn’t solve all of my problems. Regaining organization, as well as finding places to pool a fleet without infrastructure, mandated a bit of time. Bringing Prophet-Descendant Giznel into the loop was also a priority; the last thing I wanted was Betterment breathing down my neck. The leader was chagrined by my unorthodox approach to disposing of Shaza.
With hostilities terminated and internal orders dispensed, I found an opportunity to slip away. The nearest dead drop location was a human module on the border of Yotul space, inside what was once Shaza’s sector. Nerves had gotten to me, since this was my first engagement with espionage. What was General Jones going to do with the information? Would humanity’s actions reveal me as the source?
Against my better judgment, I’d booted up a call with Felra during my travels. The Dossur seemed intrigued by my days-long absence from the messaging service, which I excused as “opposition from the UN military to a business proposal.” It was technically true. Our discourse had stretched into the late hours of the night, when she was forced to depart for a few winks. Rest wasn’t a terrible idea, though my own sleep was broken.
Felra couldn’t call during her shift as a mechanical inspector, though she texted the majority of the time. She was close to finishing her day’s work, and was eager to hop on a call afterward. I warned her that I had important matters to attend soon; my ship had Jones’ outpost in sight. However, as usual, the Dossur was unfazed by my excuses, and unrelenting in her demands.
You know I don’t usually respond this slow, Siffy, Felra texted. We have been swamped, with Sillis ships docking for repairs. I saw a real, live human at work today…many of them, by sneaking a peek at the “quarantined” lodgings. You guys are gigantic!
I snorted to myself. The Dossur was never short with the unsolicited details about her day-to-day activities. If she thought that humans were massive, an Arxur’s size would astound her. Despite our slouching posture, we could loom over the primates if we so desired. It mystified me how the Federation species could compare us and the Terrans, and see predatory features in the tree-dwellers.
Well, I suppose you should be working, not on here chatting, I answered back. Don’t get into trouble on my account.
The Dossur typed back furiously. For crying out loud, Siffy! Show a little curiosity. Ask some questions…if you’re interested in what I’m saying at all.
Fine. Did seeing the humans scare you, Felra?
Yes…please don’t be mad at me! I’m just being honest. I didn’t tell you this, but I’ve watched a lot of human media since I paired with you here. Your comedies are hysterical and outlandish, for one.
You only watched comedies?
I watched the first human to appear on a Venlil talk show too. Some actor; he played off what the host was saying without hesitation, read discomfort with ease, and made fun of himself. So natural, conversational, and charismatic. So…unlike you.
My paw nearly dropped the holopad, and I considered switching it off. Of course, I was nothing like the charming primates, with their smooth sociability and their empathetic capacity. I would be lucky to call myself a shallow echo of their personal depth. Perhaps it would’ve been possible for me to be a better Arxur, but the deeds I’d committed had hollowed out my defective side.
Had Felra figured out that I wasn’t a human at all? No, if she had ascertained that her internet friend was an Arxur, she would’ve cut contact. The Dossur was getting close to the truth, so I needed to deflect her attention.
I do not want to talk about me, I sent back.
You never want to talk about you! You won’t tell me one thing that’s real about you, or one thing that’s not wrapped in mystery. It’s like you think if you’re genuine, you’re going to scare me off. Just because I’m small doesn’t mean I’m a damn coward!
I do not think that, Felra. But I would scare you off, it is a fact. You said the humans you saw at work scared you.
I kept looking though! What absolute goofballs…the way they razzed each other was so juvenile. The more I looked, the more I thought you’re overgrown children. But not you.
I am not like them.
Answer me an honest question. Do you have predator disease? Don’t take that the wrong way. I’ve thought there are harmless strains of predator disease, which isn’t exactly a popular idea here.
Define predator disease.
You know…antisocial, violent, noncompliant, nonconformist, lacking a full range of emotions, or delusional? Some combo of those.
Those are unrelated attributes. You can call me nonconformist and leave it at that.
Okay, Siffy. I’m not judging you, I just want to get to know you. I want to understand you.
You cannot do either of those things! Don’t you get it? I am not a good person, Felra; I have thought about little but my own survival for decades. I’m not prepared to interact with people like you, or to censor myself as humans do.
I don’t want you to censor yourself. I think you are deeply unhappy and troubled. You don’t deserve to be alone…just open up to me, man. Ah shit, let me guess, now you’ll say you have to go?
I do. Guess you know me after all. Good-bye.
The way Felra peeled back my emotional layers, and hounded me for personal insights, left my defective side in a full-blown mutiny. I’d gotten too close to confessing the actual things I’d buried; speaking with the pesky Dossur was always a mistake, yet I kept doing it. What good would babbling about my feelings do, other than to let misery overtake me? It wasn’t like I could detail my life’s work, and the reasons why I acted this way, to her.
The rote actions of piloting the ship distracted me from the message banners accumulating on my holopad. It buzzed with an incoming call, as I descended toward the minimalist human station. Growling to myself, I took the device and shoved it back in the drawer. If I had any courage befitting an Arxur, I would delete that silly rodent’s contact info; no, I would remove the entire SwiftPair application.
Just take this stupid communique, and upload it to the blasted humans’ computer network. The Arxur’s future is relying on you, while you spend time caring about random prey you just met!
I jerked upright, as I realized which thought had crossed my mind. Caring about Felra was an unacceptable indulgence; that was the exact reason why leaf-licking races made illogical decisions for the preservation of one individual. Oftentimes, caring about another managed to get people killed, or cause grave detriment to their own lives. It was foolish weakness, and there weren’t even social benefits in my case.
Docking was completed just outside the dead drop site’s sole entry. As I disembarked my ship, I was livid with myself. My claws swiped through the empty air, and my temper boiled inside of me. The fact was, even if I envied the humans’ illogical morality and society, I was not one of their kind. This weakness needed to be purged at once, before it ruined me.
“Fucking Tarva, with her stupid ideas. Oh, I really need a friend,” I ranted to myself.
The airlock hissed open at my arrival, granting me access to the one-room space station. I’d stormed through the docking tunnel in a haze, and I couldn’t wait to return to my ship. The point of my operation was to end the cruelty and starvation of my people. Revealing Giznel’s plot was a way to up the ante; it could stoke the flames of open rebellion. The data drive in my grasp felt heavy from its importance.
A green light flashed in a wall camera, likely activated by a motion sensor. I leaned closer to the computer display, tracing a claw across it. There were multiple ports, but I needed to find one tailored for my specific hardware. Perhaps General Jones or one of her henchmen had the sense to leave accessible instructions….wait, did humans even know Arxur script?
The lone computer monitor blinked to life, and I wondered if it was triggered by my presence as well. My pupils flitted up, seeing a feed of General Jones’ face on screen. It was possible that this was a prerecorded message with instructions, which would be an efficient decision. However, the primate’s eyes seemed to be following my movements.
“Is this live?” I queried.
The human dipped her head, dust-colored bowl cut waving slightly. “Yes, Isif, this is a real-time communications feed.”
“The point of a dead drop is to have no contact with you, yes?”
“You are correct. Don’t consider this standard practice for our discussions, but I needed to speak with you. The motion sensors tipped me off to your arrival; thank you for coming, by the way. Oh, and before you ask, this is a secure and private feed.”
“Noted. General, I had nothing to do with the captured humans on Sillis.”
“But you had everything to do with Chief Hunter Shaza arriving in multiple pieces. Dead, and not answering any questions. Zhao wants intel, not a pair of homemade Arxur-skin boots.”
I suppressed a laugh, somehow managing to keep a straight face. The liberated Terrans had done as expected, exacting their revenge upon the cruel Arxur. It was a fitting end for her, after the gruesome death she’d given to a sapient predator. I had been looking forward to executing her myself; outsourcing the work tempered the pleasure, though the outcome was still satisfactory.
“How could I have possibly known that humans would kill their own prisoner?” I asked, baring my teeth. “I sent her with Zhao’s people, just as you asked. This seems like the problem is on you.”
Jones narrowed her eyes. “Isif, you knew exactly what would happen.”
“Ah, if this is what you needed to speak with me about, perhaps I have nothing to share with you after all.”
“It’s not. I’m just warning you not to play games with me in the future. There’s bigger things at stake than your personal vendettas.”
“Consider it your payment to me for helping you, yes? Shaza called me elderly. She’s also a cannibal who intruded on my sector!”
“I am aware of her history, but her insights would have been valuable to the United Nations. If you want to overthrow the Dominion long-term, sacrifices must be made. With that said, I would love for you to brief me on what you came here to share.”
“Giznel told me that the Arxur unleashed the virus on our own cattle. Betterment purposefully imposes strategies that prevent the Dominion from recouping enough prey to feed us, whether through raiding or breeding. Therefore, I doubt my government would have any interest in lab-grown meat or non-sapient cattle.”
The human was quiet for a long moment, biting her lower lip. Intelligence gleamed in her binocular eyes, which studied me with interest. General Jones leaned forward to the camera, and offered an unnerving smile at last. There wasn’t the slightest element of surprise in her expression, or any sort of reaction like I had expected. Did anything throw the military guru off her game?
“I surmised as much,” Jones sighed. “There’s no logical explanation for the Arxur’s raiding policies, shooting yourselves in the foot.”
“You deduced a centuries-long conspiracy from our military doctrine being…illogical?” It’s like she’s trying to make me feel stupid for not seeing it sooner. “That just proves we’re destructive. Drawing far-reaching conclusions is illogical.”
“Well also, the Kolshians specialize in gene editing, but they bomb predators, instead of ‘saving’ them. They don’t need a cattle virus when they can, and do, use antimatter to ruin ecosystems.”
“I see. I guess I have wasted my time bringing it to you.”
“There’s no need for pouting. Confirmation is always valuable information, and specifics are also key to proving it. It’s nice to have actual intelligence in my back pocket, should I pass this up the food chain.”
“You mean when you apprise Zhao of this development, and give him more reason to believe we are all animals.”
“Your empathy test surprised him, Isif, and has caused him to reconsider your motives. Regardless, I’m not here to rehash this old feud, or even to lecture you on Shaza. There are concerning war developments as of late.”
My nostrils flared with interest. “Go on, Jones. Another attack on Earth, and you want my help?”
“Bah, we wouldn’t ask for your help in that circumstance unless we were truly desperate. The Kolshians are gunning for our allies, to the point that they assaulted every last one with a trial run. We’ve figured out their true target, and they already have thousands of ships ready to bury it. Or seize it; it’s hard to say.”
“I don’t understand why you’re telling me this. Venlil Prime isn’t under my protection, other than my pledge not to attack it. If my people knew I was on amicable terms with Tarva…”
“The main target isn’t Venlil Prime. It’s Mileau—the Dossur homeworld.”
My heart plummeted into my chest, thinking about Felra’s attempts to befriend me. She was a bold character, unabashed in her opinions and curious about predators. I had just admitted to myself that I cared about the rodent, and now, her homeworld was under attack. It didn’t make sense why the Terran general would inform me about Mileau’s pending attack, unless she expected me to help.
I knew Jones was spying on me, but this is a cheap trick, even for her!
“So the Federation wants to take back what they’ve lost.” Indignation sparked in my chest, as I weighed this manipulation attempt. “And why would you think I care about the Dossur homeworld?”
The human shrugged. “It’s a Federation objective in your sector. Bringing Arxur ships to their aid would prevent the Kolshians from branching out to the galaxy’s fringes.”
“You are the one playing games with me! They are your allies, not mine. Send human assets to save the Dossur, since you seem keenly aware of their plight.”
“I wish we could. Mileau is two days travel from Earth. Our assets cannot reach it in time; the Kolshians had their ships en route and waiting. But you…you have forces there. You yourself are half a day from it, and could get there in time.”
“You are fucking insane! What would the Dossur even think of my arrival?”
“I suspect one in particular is whose thoughts you care about. I am giving you information; what you choose to do with it is your prerogative. You would be equally upset with me if something happened to your friend and I didn’t tell you.”
“You admit—”
“Farewell, Isif. Stay in touch.”
General Jones had the audacity to hang up on me, and I punched the computer screen out of frustration. The glass cracked against my hardy paw, sending sparks flying. My tail lashed with outrage; I stalked out of the habitat in an emotional frenzy. My feet steered me back onto my ship with more urgency than I could admit.
I fished out the holopad, and determined that I had to warn Felra of the inbound attack. Perhaps she could get out of Mileau’s system and survive, without military interference. The Dossur ignored my call attempts, and her avatar had gone offline. I checked the chat logs in a panic, reading her final messages.
Hey Siffy. The humans who docked here just received warning of an incoming attack…from the Kolshians. There’s not many of you, and their ships are here for repairs. It’s not good.
Evacuation ships were apparently considered, but the first few we sent out didn’t get very far. The Kolshians have FTL disruptors, and they’re not letting anyone slip away. The humans advised us to shelter in place in the docking station. I am scared.
Please talk to me, Siffy. Please…I am so scared. I’m sorry for prying earlier, I really need you now! Tell me it’s going to be okay.
I don’t have much time. They’re going for our communications first. If I don’t make it out of this, I want you to know I’ve enjoyed our chats. Every weird, reclusive moment.
I stared at the last message in mute horror, and an odd burning plagued my eyes. A strange sorrow clamped at my chest, one which I could not bury. It was a sad commentary that an internet “friend”, an herbivore I’d known for a few weeks, marked the closest I’d ever felt to someone. Hadn’t I just cautioned myself about the illogical, harmful actions that attachment caused?
My defective side clamored for me to act on General Jones’ imperative. Perhaps I would’ve considered the idea even without the human’s input, just hearing Felra plead for my presence. The Dossur was the first person to care about me, even though she’d hate me once she knew the truth. Leaving her to die, when I was the sole party who could help, wasn’t an option.
With a shaking paw, I booted up my internal communications. The communique to send a full fleet to Mileau, and to treat the Dossur as protected friendlies, was dispatched before I could rethink it. My engines revved to life, and I set my warp course for Felra’s system. Reason be damned, this foolish Chief Hunter was coming to his friend’s aid in a hurry.

2023.04.15 11:53 Chewe_dev Pensiile militare

It may be time to service your satellite.
A division within Northrop Grumman has in recent years become the world leader in extending the life of valuable satellites that are already in orbit. Like any tune-up, it involves a mechanic, but this one's robotic and performing a delicate dance far above Earth.
The company is building further on that business model. But how big is the market for satellite servicing, really, in an age where spacecraft are built and launched more cheaply and frequently than ever before?
I chatted this week with Jean-Luc Froeliger, senior vice president of space systems at Intelsat, whose company announced an order from Northrop Grumman’s Space Logistics unit for its latest service technology iteration.
A quick step back: In 2020, Northrop Grumman's robotic spacecraft MEV-1 successfully docked with an old Intelsat satellite and extended its life by five years, marking an industry first. A year later, the companies took that feat a step further, docking MEV-2 with an active Intelsat satellite.
📷

Northrop Grumman’s latest version of this tech represents a more flexible approach: A larger model, called MRV (or mission robotic vehicle), will carry three MEPs (or mission extension pods), that it plans to deliver and connect with three satellites in 2026. Like before, the targets are big, expensive satellites operating in the distant geosynchronous orbit.
Intelsat ordered one of the MEPs, as did Australian satellite operator Optus. A third is expected to be sold soon.

Froeliger explained that the new approach represents a shift in business strategy for Intelsat from “renting” the MEVs for a certain number of years to owning.
“In the end, it's all a business decision that depends on the price of the MEP versus the price of a yearly MEV service,” Froeliger said.
While Intelsat has “study contracts with three or four other companies” for future satellite servicing missions, Froeliger noted that Northrop Grumman is the most “advanced” in this space sub-sector.
But the size of the market today largely depends on the number of geosynchronous satellites that would benefit from life extension. Froeliger said about 10% of the 56 satellites in Intelsat’s fleet are candidates – making satellite servicing still a niche market.
“The others we’ll replace with a brand new satellite,” Froeliger said

This has been an enjoyable exploration evaluating the new RTX 4070 FE. Overall, it is the best 40 series value for your money if the current adoption rate of DLSS and DLSS 3 continues. The performance gain is stunning. Without this technology, we can compare the RTX 4070 to the RTX 3080 from the previous generation with very distinct differences. Nvidia has improved performance with supplemental tech like DLSS 3, the architecture, cooling, and most of all, the pricing.
The RTX 4070 is compact and amazingly efficient compared to the RTX 30 series and its 40 series brothers. The idle fan stop is huge for us, and support for AV1 encoding is stellar for a lot of streamers at this price.
The RTX 4070 performed above the RTX 3080 in most cases and well above the RTX RTX 3070. The gap widened significantly with frame generation/DLSS 3 – So much so that this is a no-brainer. However, this is not a “wow” with the raster performance jump over the previous generation. Instead, the RTX 4070 is more efficient, more compact, and has much better features especially if you are still on a 10-series card. This is a worthy point in time with a card that is finally available at a reasonable price as a poster child for the generational leaps Nvidia is making with its technology and DLSS 3.
There is no early adopter woe here as there are many AAA titles to enjoy – right now – with DLSS 3 enabled, unlike with ray tracing at its launch. However, If DLSS 3 means little to you, we would hesitate to recommend upgrading from an RTX 3080 to an RTX 4070. However, the RTX 3070 user base will see enough significant performance gains to be able to make this a worthwhile consideration.
For a couple hundred dollars more you could buy an RTX 4070 Ti or a current AMD offering – but there is no card currently in this class and price that comes close to competing. The value of your dollar here will make any gamer happy. Especially at 1080p and 1440p, this card is a beast ready to serve your needs.

Dexterto

The RTX 4070 is notable for two things – cost per frame and power efficiency. Much like the RTX 40-series GPUs before it, the wattage efficiency gains when compared to the 3080 are nothing short of staggering. You get around the same levels of performance at 200W on the RTX 4070, versus the RTX 3080’s 320W.
The RTX 4070’s costs-per-frame analysis also tells an interesting story of the higher-end RTX 40-series graphics cards thus far. To calculate this, we added up the average benchmarked framerates of all GPUs in our standardized tests and divided it by the MSRP costs of the GPU in order to get an average frame-per-dollar ratio.
RTX 4070 – 3.0 frames per-dollar
RTX 3080 – 2.3 frames per-dollar
RTX 4070 Ti – 2.7 frames per-dollar
RTX 4080 – 3.4 frames per-dollar
Interestingly, we also compared this against the RTX 3080, if you were to pick one up brand-new today for $699, it ended up at 2.3 frames per dollar. While the RTX 4070 may be more expensive than its previous-generation counterpart, adjusted for inflation, the MSRP cost of the RTX 3070 would have been around $582 today.
We were unable to add the RTX 4090 to the cost-per-frame calculations due to benchmarks not being as standard with our current testing system, therefore it would not be fair to compare the two.
For those who have an older RTX 10 or 20-series graphics card, the RTX 4070 is an attractive upgrade, and offers great performance at 4K, 1440p, and 1080p. It is essentially an RTX 3080 with some extra VRAM and DLSS 3 goodies crammed into it. However, if you already own an RTX 30-series GPU, the jump in performance will be pretty disappointing.
The RTX 4070 is yet another solid entry into the RTX 40-series lineup. It offers an accessible entry point and access to future-forward features like DLSS 3. However, its pricing remains key. At $599, it is a competitive GPU, at any price above that, you may wish to look at other options on the market.

The concept of value has come to define the latest generation of graphics cards, with consumers concerned and angry that this new generation of GPUs doesn't offer the same balance of price and performance as the last generation. Perhaps the blame for this can be placed on Nvidia's profit margins - but it's equally the case that we're living through a period of shocking inflation and a far higher cost of production on cutting-edge semiconductors.
The RTX 4070 does compare favourably in terms of price/performance vs the RTX 3070 - you're typically getting in the region of 30 percent of extra performance for 20 percent more money, in addition to 50 percent more memory and access to DLSS 3 frame generation. It's just a shame that the 'more money' part of that sentence is in there - but this is not the first time we've had a price hike on a 70-class GPU. In fact, it happens more often than not. There was a real world price increase between GTX 970 and GTX 1070, and it happened again with the arrival of RTX 2070 which retailed for a baffling $529 back in 2018.
Up against the RTX 3080, the new card is generally on-par or just a touch slower, but does have the odd surprise or two up its sleeve and of course, there's more memory, improved efficiency and DLSS 3. There is an increase in value then, but it's clearly nowhere near as dramatic as the RTX 30-series cards mentioned here were back in the day. I mean, the 3070 delivered nigh-on 2080 Ti performance - the $500 product replaced the last-gen $1200 offering. By contrast, we now have a $599 GPU effectively replacing last-gen's $699 offering, which represents a significant slowing of progress.
Of course, the discussion here does overlook how consumers are likely to consider the latest graphics card generations. An owner of an RTX 30-series graphics card will likely hold onto it for a year or two more. It's the users of 10-series and 20-series GPUs that will be taking a look at this new offering. There, at least, there are big improvements to gaming performance. Even without factoring in DLSS 3, there's a circa 2x increase in performance (though gains vary more significantly when RT is factored out of the equation) - and unless AMD can come up with something more compelling, it's the defacto upgrade for owners of GTX 1070/Ti, RTX 2070 and 2070 Super and perhaps even the RTX 2080 - which launched at $699. We'll add that card to the benchmark tables in due course, but it's only a touch faster than the 2070 Super.
It's perhaps difficult to rave about the RTX 4070 in the same way we did about so many of the Ampere cards of the last generation, but we are at least starting to see proportionately more value returned to the user as we move down the RTX 40-series stack. And to be clear, RTX 3080-level performance is still pretty incredible. A $600 GPU is basically giving you rasterisation performance around 70 to 80 percent better than a PS5 or Xbox Series X, and that's before you include DLSS, improved RT performance and frame generation. While we've benched this card primarily with 1440p high frame-rate gaming in mind, take a look at the 4K results, especially with DLSS 2 and DLSS 3 factored in - this is still capable of some exceptional performance on an Ultra HD panel.
The RTX 4070 won't set the world on fire and it's hardly a love letter from Nvidia to the gamer - but it's certainly a capable piece of kit. In a world where RTX 3080 continues to hold its original 2020 pricing, the cost of the RTX 4070 is fine - if not exceptional - and its no-fuss form factor and frugal power consumption are positives too. And with the arrival of Cyberpunk 2077's RT Overdrive upgrade, there is the sense that PC gaming is once again reaching for the stars, and with decent settings management, RTX 4070 can still deliver a worthwhile experience.

Guru3D

The RTX 4070 is a graphics card that can waves in the gaming world due to its rendering quality and gaming performance when combined with DLSS3 frame generation. The RTX 4070 provides a bit more value for the money. It is a well-balanced card that can handle gaming at 4K resolution, although it is targeted towards WQHD. Compared to AMD's offerings, the Nvidia GPU struggles to keep up with the Radeon RX 7900 XT, but it still has many positive aspects. DLSS (3) and ray tracing features work exceptionally well, AMD cannot match Nvidia in this regard. The RTX 4070 is an excellent option for gamers who play at UWHD, QHD, and even UHD monitor resolutions.
The old rasterizer engine breaks right through the previous limit of extreme performance. The RTX 40 series now has a new generation of Ray tracing and Tensor cores that are more powerful. So, do not let the specific RT and Tensor core counts fool you; it's all about how much performance one unit offers. Since they are close to the shader engine, they have become more efficient, which shows. Tensor cores are harder to measure, but from what we have seen, everything seems to be in good shape, as DLSS3 shows exciting values
The GeForce RTX 4070 founder edition graphics card offers nice performance and visual quality, adding to that improved power efficiency and low thermals, making it an energy-friendly option. It effortlessly handles high-resolution gaming and creative workflows, the VRAM capacity (12GB) we deem is very acceptable. When choosing between the RTX 4070 and Radeon RX 7900 XT, it's important to consider factors such as raytracing performance and DLSS3, which the RTX 4070 excels at. However, a Radeon RX 7900 XT offers much faster rasterizer engine performance with an additional L3 cache, making it a strong(er) contender for the RTX 4070. The GeForce RTX 4070 is priced at $200 lower, so perhaps it offers more value. In this respect, we feel the card is competing more with the 6800/6900 XT than the 7900XT, though. Performance-wise, you can compare the card with RTX 3070 Ti / 3080 performance levels depending on where you measure. Overall, the RTX 4070 series edition is an interesting option for those looking for a visually appealing graphics card, as the founder editions sure look nice, also. This graphics card has plenty of oomph up-to even Ultra HD gaming (especially with DLSS3 / Frame generation enabled) with the option for a mild overclock. As such it comes recommended. Pricing, however, remains a sore point

Hot Hardware

The MSRP for GeForce RTX 4070 series cards starts at $599, which is on-par with the RTX 3070 Ti, but $100 more than the RTX 3070. At that price point, the GeForce RTX 4070 will be battling a wide array of cards currently, from the 3070 Ti and 3080, to the Radeon RX 6800 and 6900 XT, give or take a few bucks depending on deals, rebates, and what have you. There’s definitely stiff competition in this price bracket and looking back through the GeForce RTX 4070’s performance it’s not likely to compel anyone with an upper-midrange GPU from the previous gen to upgrade.
However, for owners of the GeForce RTX 20-series or older Radeons, the GeForce RTX 4070 is a relatively affordable way to get into an Ada-based graphics card, and better enjoy the benefits of ray tracing, DLSS 3, and other benefits of the architecture, like AV1 encoding. In our graphics and game tests the GeForce RTX 4070 was clearly superior to the RTX 3070 Ti, which is where you’d expect it to land, but it shined a bit brighter in the compute and creator workloads.
For 1080p or 1440p gamers, the GeForce RTX 4070 is a relatively affordable, power-friendly way to score a current-gen GPU with a leading edge feature set. Its 12GB of memory may be a limiting factor in the future as games get more complex and visual fidelity increases, but as it stands today the GeForce RTX 4070 offers huge leaps in efficiency and good performance. If you’re looking to upgrade a previous-gen system with a modern GPU or are building a new, mainstream system, the GeForce RTX 4070 is a solid mid-range option.

Igor's Lab

The GeForce RTX 4070 is a highly interesting mid-range graphics card as long as you ignore the price. Therefore, NVIDIA has put some pressure on the board partners to also offer at least one model with a price that corresponds to the RRP. Of course, the shortcomings in the technical implementation, including the limitation of the power limit to 200 watts, can be argued about. Of course, you can easily do without RGB, light metal and other optical extras if the price is right.
To play reasonably performant games, the 200 watts are also easily enough, because you can reach or even beat a GeForce RTX 3080 10GB, of course depending on the game and resolution. That’s the good side. However, the up to 20 watts more of an overclockable card are quite well invested money, because the 10% more energy can be converted into up to 10% more performance in some situations, such as DLSS, when the tensor cores are also fully utilized. However, the advantage in terms of screening performance is much smaller. However, the effects of the higher power consumption are also more noticeable in the Min FPS than in the pure average and that’s where it gets interesting again.
The GeForce RTX 4070 is an excellent card in Full HD when it comes to highest frame rates and is also well suited for WQHD. However, smart upscaling will have to be considered in Ultra HD at the latest, and that’s where DLSS comes into play. Meanwhile, games like “The Last of Us Part 1” (TLOU) even subjectively look better in Ultra HD with DLSS than native Ultra HD. NVIDIA can definitely use its advantages here, which DLSS 2.x also offers purely optically. However, if a game supports DLSS 3.0 and you would be stuck in the unplayable FPS range without Super Sampling, then this can even be the lifeline to playability. You can’t improve latencies with it, but not every genre is as latency-bound as various shooters. For TLOU, I would have liked to see DLSS 3.0, but you can’t have everything.
You get all the advantages of the Ada architecture starting at 659 Euros (MSRP cards) and could be quite satisfied with that in the context of the current price spiral, if it weren’t for the memory expansion and the narrow memory interface, which I had already noted in the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti. Yes, that might be enough for WQHD at the moment, but games like TLOU unfortunately show us that resources are being used more and more wastefully and the memory could be full faster than you can say pug. We can already see: So there is always something. Thus, you can currently still get along very well with it under WQHD, only in Ultra HD there are games that already consider the given 12 GB too puny due to various HD texture packs. This can be seen either way, but it could have been avoided if the AD104 had been designed differently. Two memory controllers are simply missing here, but who am I telling.

Overall efficiency of the RTX 4070 is in-line with the RTX 4070 Ti. On average, at 1440p we found the non-Ti card drew 194.1W, so just slightly below its rated 200W TGP. That's about 80% of the power draw of the 4070 Ti, while offering 82% of the performance, so the 4070 is just a hair more efficient overall. It's not able to match the RTX 4080 in terms of performance per Watt, but against the RTX 3080, it offers similar performance for over 100W less power, resulting in a 67% boost to efficiency compared to that last-gen GPU.
All told, my opinion on the RTX 4070 is generally pretty similar to that of the RTX 4070 Ti – it's a reasonable GPU, but it's hard to be more effusive than that. On the one hand, it offers similar gaming performance to the RTX 3080 10GB, but with a couple extra gigs of VRAM, significantly less power and with the bonus of DLSS 3 support.
Then again, an extra 15-20% performance over the RTX 3070 Ti is hardly much to get excited about, in fact it is pretty lacklustre it has to be said. That's on top of an 11% price hike over the £529 MSRP for the 3070 Ti, negating a lot of that performance improvement. Cost per frame is just not moving forward from the previous generation, in fact several deals on RDNA 2 GPUs result in a better cost per frame for the likes of the RX 6700 XT and RX 6800 XT than what we get from the RTX 4070, though admittedly RDNA 2's ray tracing performance is a fair bit behind the 4070.
We do have to wonder about the longevity of the 12GB framebuffer too. A lot has happened in the last few months and several titles – including The Last of Us Part 1, Hogwarts Legacy, and Forspoken – are now causing real problems for 8GB cards, including the 3070 and 3070 Ti. As more games shift beyond the cross-gen period, having large amounts of VRAM is only going to be a benefit as developers leverage what's available on the Series X and PS5. It will be interesting to look back in 2-3 years and see how the land lies with the 4070 and its 12GB VRAM.
Ultimately, if you're hanging on to a 10-series or perhaps 20-series GPU and want to spend around £600 on a new card, right now the 4070 is probably your best bet – though we are yet to see what RDNA 3 will do in this price bracket. The 4070 won't go down as a classic, owing to the relatively weak performance improvement versus the previous generation, but it's an OK GPU. No more, no less.

LanOC

The latest in Nvidia’s Ada Lovelace architecture wasn’t a big departure from the RTX 4070 Ti above it, mostly just cut down and with its clock speeds lowered. But with that what stood out to me more than anything in my testing was the power usage and overall efficiency of the card. You have performance that is competing with last generations RTX 3080 but power draw at its peak and averaged across a variety of tests lower than the RTX 3060 Ti. The performance-to-power comparison is only better with Nvidia’s highest-end cards, the 4090 and 4080. That efficiency helped them drop back down to a traditional card size, not the crazy size of the 4080 and 4090 Founders Editions. Even with the smaller card, however, the RTX 4070 Founders Edition impressed on all of its cooling tests and noise tests. Nvidia hit the sweet spot for performance, size, power, noise, and temperatures, and with that, this could be a great SFF card.
The overall performance comparison is a lot more nuanced. Like I said before the 4070 does run right with the RTX 3080, in fact at 1080p in our tests it was a touch faster with the 3080 pulling away as the resolution goes up. But like with the RTX 4070 Ti, it is the ray tracing and DLSS performance that is most impressive. In games that supported it, the 4070 was about to step up and be very capable at 4k while running ray tracing even. To complicate things though, the competition (AMD) isn’t on the same level when it comes to ray tracing and their version of DLSS (FSR) but when it comes to raw rastering performance the 6800 XT which is priced less than the RTX 4070 is faster and the 6950 XT which is most expensive but still close in pricing is even faster than that.
I’ve kind of touched on it already but let's get to pricing. The RTX 4070 Founders Edition and other stock-clocked cards will be hitting stores tomorrow at an MSRP of $599. On the AMD side, the 6800 XT is currently selling for $539-$579 and the 6950 XT are running $629-$679. On the Nvidia side, the cheapest non-refurb RTX 3080 on Newegg is $699 with most at $898 and higher. So if we only look at the RTX 3080 the new RTX 4070 is a great deal especially once you add in DLSS 3 which isn’t available on the 3080. The AMD cards however complicate things. For raw raster performance, those are a great value in comparison, but that is before you put a value on the ray tracing performance and DLSS. Overall I would love to see the RTX 4070 come in lower competing with the 6800 XT. But if ray tracing and DLSS/FSR are your main focus and I do believe in the future those are going to be key to gaming performance the RTX 4070 starts to become an option.

Whenever you look at a new graphics card purchase the main factor to consider is nearly always price. Nothing in your rig will give you such an obvious and immediate return than spending a little extra on your GPU. Faster drives eventually get slowed down by the OS. Faster processors only really show up in specific, heavy-loading scenarios. But graphical horsepower, that's instant, immediate and clearly noticeable in every gaming scenario.
The pricing of graphics cards in recent years has been higher than Everest thanks to supply issues and the global financial crisis. Additionally some of the newer cards have so much new technology inside them that there is a level of early adopter cost built in too. The newest addition to the Nvidia 4000 series, the RTX 4070, is priced much more competitively than a lot of their recent launches, partly because the world has somewhat got back to normal, but also partly because Nvidia have designed it more for those of you who game at 1440P rather than 4K.
That doesn't seem as crazy as it might. 4K gaming, whilst it's the buzzword for people trying to sell you new hardware, is still a rarity for the majority of people and 1440P is actually the sweet spot, where you get much higher visual fidelity than 1080P, without requiring a trip to Fort Knox to obtain the funding necessary to do it justice. Many people have a 4K panel and tolerate 40 FPS because that's somehow 'better' than running a less-kudos inspiring 1440P but getting 70 FPS average.
For the sake of equality and an apples-to-apples comparison we tested the RTX 4070 FE on both 1440 and 4K, and our graphs are sorted by average FPS in the 4K resolution. That's something to bear in mind if you're the type of person to merely glance at our graphs. Even so we think the RTX 4070 is much closer to the RTX 4070 Ti than we expected it to be, especially given the price difference. Although it's not the be-all and end-all of gaming tests, we think the fact that this card, specifically not aimed at 4K gamers, still got over 60 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 with RT and DLSS turned on speaks volumes about how good the underlying performance of the card is.
If you've been itching to get on the DLSS 3 bandwagon with a 4000 series card then the Nvidia RTX 4070 FE is the perfect sweet-spot between price and performance. Very close to the RTX 4070 Ti but with a much more attractive MSRP of £589 and thus wins our OC3D Gamers Choice Award.

PC Perspective

NVIDIA has once again released a xx70 GPU that is about the equal of the previous-gen xx80 card, and it offers better RTX and DLSS support as well. The MSRP is $100 less than the RTX 3080 launch price of $699, but $599 for a xx70 card is still not going to have people dancing and singing in the streets. Or on TikTok or whatever. It has been more than 2.5 years since the RTX 3080 launched, after all.
Inflation is real, people. I too remember a time when $600 bought a flagship. But we don’t live in that world anymore, and unless AMD releases a Radeon RX 7000 Series competitor at this price level we are simply looking at what the current generation has to offer at $600. The state-of-the-art, if you will. And art is subjective. Money is not.

PC World

The GeForce RTX 4070 delivers exceptional 1440p gaming performance in even the most strenuous games, with best-in-class ray tracing performance if you want to turn those cutting-edge lighting features on. Nvidia’s killer software stack enhances every aspect of the GPU, from creation to streaming to gaming, with features like Nvidia Reflex, Broadcast, RTX Video Super Resolution, and DLSS 3 Frame Generation truly improving your day-to-day experience. If you found yourself nodding along to our defense of the 4070 Ti by a 1440p gamer, you’re the prime audience for the $200-cheaper RTX 4070.
The RTX 4070 also supports AV1 encoding, unlike previous-gen GPUs, while its incredible power efficiency let Nvidia make its Founders Edition model nice and tiny. It’ll fit into most any system.
It’s not a slam dunk though. Nvidia’s decision to equip the RTX 4070 with a 192-bit bus and 12GB of memory prevent us from being able to recommend it for long-term 4K gaming, especially with memory requirements only rising in modern games. (We applaud the bump in memory from 8GB to 12GB, but $600 graphics cards really should have 16GB or more in 2023.)
As I said right up top, the $599 GeForce RTX 4070 is the only current Nvidia 40-series graphics card potentially worth your money aside from the flagship RTX 4090. That’s because Nvidia didn’t jack its price as painfully as the $800 RTX 4070 Ti and $1,200 RTX 4080, not because it’s a good value. The $599 RTX 4070 is $100 more than its predecessor, and $100 less than the RTX 3080. In most games, the RTX 3080 trades blow or is a handful of frames faster than the RTX 4070. Sure, the RTX 4070’s power efficiency and DLSS 3 Frame Gen features are deeply impressive indeed, but in raw gaming performance, Nvidia’s 40-series continues to offer stagnant gen-on-gen value, 2.5 years after the 30-series launched. Not every game will support features like DLSS or FSR.
Buy the GeForce RTX 4070 if you want a reasonably sized, highly efficient 1440p gaming beast, complete with access to all the latest and greatest Nvidia software features—and if you’re willing to spend $600 on a graphics card like that. Avoid it for long-term 4K usage, and comparison shop before you buy as last-gen graphics cards may offer better value.

Admittedly, we’d find ourselves more excited about the RTX 4070 if it did in fact retain the RTX 3070’s pricing. We remember the days when someone could spend the same general amount on a GPU from one generation to the next, and see a substantial upgrade. Today, it feels like all of that improved performance is locked behind a price premium instead.
That all said, while we wish the price was a little more alluring to cater to more people, the RTX 4070 does have a few great things going for it over that last-gen RTX 3070 Ti. For starters, the frame buffer has increased 50%, to sit at 12GB, and (surprisingly?), the bandwidth is identical to the model above (both RTX 4070 Ti and RTX 4070 share the same 192-bit bus). It’s a hot topic right now that 8GB of VRAM isn’t enough to feel super-comfortable with in 2023, so it’s crucial that this RTX 4070 did in fact ship with 12GB.
Another part of the upgrade comes by way of the Frame Generation feature in DLSS 3. While previous-gen cards can take advantage of other DLSS 3 updates, Frame Generation is exclusive to Ada Lovelace, and as we’ve seen in the few tests where we utilized it, the differences can be huge. We mentioned the caveat about retaining a good baseline FPS when using FG so input latency is kept to a minimum, and this RTX 4070 delivered that quite easily in Cyberpunk 2077, and Dying Light 2.
Path-traced games, such as the newly-updated Cyberpunk 2077, are going to be best played on a GPU like the RTX 4070 at 1080p, although Portal with RTX is suitable enough for 1440p, given that it’s not a twitch shooter (note: we played through all of Portal with RTX ahead of this launch, and can say it’s definitely worth checking out).
Whether or not the RTX 4070’s price tag feels worth it to you will depend on what you’re after. It’s really good to see 12GB included with it, and the Frame Generation feature is already supported in a whack of games, and is likely to become more prominent over time. We figure these two things factored into NVIDIA’s thinking on pricing most.
That said, after looking over pricing ahead of this article, we found ourselves having a difficult time even deciding wihch competitive GPUs to include. Since we had yet to test Intel’s Arc in gaming, we wanted to have it included, and on the AMD side, we looked for the GPU nearest in price. The thing is, though, that last-gen Radeons are finding themselves well under SRP, while NVIDIA’s tend to hover over them.
The Radeon RX 6950 XT tested here didn’t just beat out the RTX 4070, but also the RTX 4070 Ti. The downside? No Frame Generation, of course, or the leading upscaler, DLSS. The GPU also happens to use an additional 200W, and is much larger. But, it’s a good option when looking at the bang-for-the-buck angle, and it is sure nice to have those.
We’re not sure whether or not NVIDIA will have a tough sell with the RTX 4070, but aside from its price, it packs a lot of performance in its modest frame. It uses reasoanble amounts of power (especially in comparison to the top-end Ada), and perks like Frame Generation alongside the 12GB frame buffer make it a worthy option.

The FPS Review

The GeForce RTX 4070 is price competitive with the last generation’s GeForce RTX 3070 Ti. In our performance testing, the lowest performance uplift was around 13% over the RTX 3070 Ti, but for the most part, it was closer to 20% on average, with some outliers like 41% in one game. There was a slightly larger advantage over the GeForce RTX 3070, about another 10% added to that, or 30% total on average. The results actually are closer versus the Radeon RX 6800, as it was closer in several games in performance.
When we enabled Ray Tracing the GeForce RTX 4070 did outperform everything very well. It allowed a playable experience with Ray Tracing at 1440p, except for one game, but that was expected. When things are not as playable, enable DLSS, and it’s more than fine. The GeForce RTX 4070 is flexible by allowing DLSS 3 Frame Generation, DLSS support, and FSR. The big walkaway is that the GeForce RTX 4070 allows a more than enjoyable gameplay experience at 1440p.
Compared to the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, at the same MSRP price-point, gen-to-gen, the GeForce RTX 4070 improves in the following ways. It provides DLSS 3 Frame Generation support, it has a higher VRAM capacity at 12GB versus 8GB, it provides better Ray Tracing performance, it provides AV1 support, and it is around 20% faster at the same price point as the last generation, and it is smaller more efficient and runs cooler.

Tomshardware

Compared to the previous-gen parts, the RTX 4070 ends up trading blows with the RTX 3080 across our test suite. There are times when it's 5–10 percent faster, and other instances where it's 5–10 percent slower. Of course, that's not counting DLSS 3, which can boost performance by another 30% or more. But as we've said many times, DLSS 3's Frame Generation doesn't directly translate into universally better performance. It can smooth out visuals, but it adds latency and still needs a decent base level of performance before it's acceptable.
The most impressive aspect of the RTX 4070 isn't the performance or the price, but rather the efficiency. Even though it's not clearly superior to an RTX 3080, it's close enough that we'd give it the edge. The fact that it needs 120W less power to reach the same level of performance is just the cherry on top.
Just don't go into the RTX 4070 expecting twice the performance for half the price. As Jensen put it last year, those types of gains aren't happening anymore, especially as we reach the scaling limits of Moore's Law (RIP). Instead, Nvidia is offering more of an alternative to the last generation's top GPU, the RTX 3080... now at a lower price, with significantly lower power requirements, and with some extra features like DLSS 3 and AV1 encoding support.
If you were previously eyeing an upgrade to an RTX 3070 for $500, the RTX 4070 is a far better deal. It's 33% faster across our entire test suite, not counting DLSS 3, for a 20% increase in price. And you get to choose whether or not you want to turn on Frame Generation, plus the option to stream in AV1 if that's your thing.
If you've been holding out for an affordable RTX 40-series GPU, the RTX 4070 is probably about as good as it will get in the near term. Sure, we'll see an RTX 4060, maybe even a 4060 Ti, and RTX 4050 as well. But we really don't like the thought of buying a GPU with less than 12GB VRAM these days, and it's tough to see Nvidia slapping more than 8GB on some of the upcoming models. Yes, they might cost less, but they'll require a lot more in the way of compromise.
If you're a mainstream gamer still hanging on to an RTX 2070, or an even older GTX 1070, and you're finally ready to upgrade, hopefully, you can scrape together the $600 needed for an RTX 4070. Of course, we can always wish for lower prices and higher performance, but with the current market conditions, the 4070 is about as good as we're likely to get.

2023.04.01 06:03 PresentationNo9768 how to get blender to work on my laptop

hi so blender crashed on me when i was following the blender guru donut tutorial and it was on one of the most basic parts of subdividing i think. just making the basic body of the donut was enough to cause it to crash. i was able to make low ploy rocks and do some light texturing and not much else without frames dropping to an extremally low extent. is there anyway to clean my laptop or do anything that can help improve my capabilities so that i can start actually creating on blender? the specs for my lap top are these

Proccesser: intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10210U CPU @ 1.60GHz 2.11 GHz
Installed ram: 12.0 GB (11.8 GB usable)

2023.03.26 22:24 rationally_speaking Persistently mounted drives on Intel NUC/Ubuntu from NAS for Plex in Docker

Apologies in advance for the long-booty title! I have been trying to find a way to automatically mount my Synology shared folders onto my IntelNUC to be used by Plex running in a Docker on said NUC. The NUC is currently running Ubuntu 22.10 but once I get everything set up I am going to run it more or less headless, sitting in another room with my NAS.
I am having a heck of a time finding a great way to make Ubuntu automatically mount my NAS shares. It seems them if I go to Files > Other and it will even allow me to mount the folders individually. However, they will not persist after reboot. And on top of that, Plex cannot see those mounted folders.
I saw this post from about 10 days back https://www.reddit.com/synology/comments/t5j2d3/any_way_to_automount_synology_shared_folders_on/ but it didn't really shed much light on my situation.
I'm not a CLI guru but I can learn / read I'm just hoping someone can point me in the right direction. My Mac persistently mounted them NAS as a network drive so that's all sorted. Just need to get this Ubuntu server going so I can clean up my desk and pass off all of the hard work to the NUC instead of Synology.
You have my warmest thanks and digital fist bumps!

2023.03.20 19:18 cdddogggg Constant crashing issues need help

Hello all,
I've been having some problems lately with my pc crashing without fail whilst gaming. It completely freezes my pc so I can't alt+tab or ctrl+alt+del, I have to hold the button on my pc to restart so I know it isn't the game crashing. It seems completely random as I haven't been able to pinpoint any common variables between the pc crashes. At times I can go 3 hours before a crash, other times less than a minute. I use Speccy to monitor my temps and my GPU and CPU never go above 65 C so I know it isn't an overheating issue. I've heard about maybe a faulty PSU or maybe my current PSU isn't sufficient, I don't know. I feel as though I've done everything I know to do so this is a last ditch effort to try and get some opinions from others. I'm at a loss at this point and it's getting extremely frustrating.
Here are my pc specs for those wanting to know:
Intel Core i9-10900K 3.7 Ghz
48 Gb RAM
MSI Z490-A Pro Motherboard
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070
650W PSU
If anyone needs additional information I'm happy to provide it. I'm not exactly a pc guru so I apologize if I haven't used the correct terms or I haven't provided enough information. Thank you in advance all!

2023.03.19 21:22 JohnDenverdidntlie New GPU wont start

CPU: Intel Core i7-9700K
Mainboard: ASRock - Z390 Taichi - PCI-Express 3.0 (8.0 GT/s)
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. - Version P1.60A - Date 11/15/2018
Graphics: NVIDIA Quadro P2000
PSU: Focus Plus 750 Gold
SSD: Samsung 970 Pro NVMe PCIe M.2 512GB

RAM: Samsung M378A2K43CB1-CTD 2x16GB
MBD: BOXX APEXX S3.04
Hey guys! I bought this computer off my company and wanted to upgrade the graphics card. I bought the "AMD Radeon RX 6600 (Swift210)". I was able to physically install it, but when I try to turn on the PC it does not work. I looked online and the most common answers were that my PSU was not strong enough, however I found that 750 should be more than enough. My only guess is that because I have all the top slots in my PSU filled up with misc. cables (I do not know what they all go to as it came like this) so when I plug in then the Graphics Card, that extra power is sending it over the edge.
I also saw that I may need to update my BIOS but the website said do not update if the machine currently runs, which it does using my current graphics card.
Update: I did update the BIOS and the same issue happened. My current Graphics Card still works great.
This is the newer version of what I have
I needed to buy this cable as my computer did not have an 8pin

Any suggestions would be great!
