This week's challenge: This week's challenge comes from listener Peter Collins, of Ann Arbor, MI. Think of a well-known author whose first name is nine letters long, and last name six letters. Change the first letter of the last name and anagram those six letters to spell a word. Now read everything together â the author's first name plus the anagram with a letter changed of the last name â and you'll get a certain professional athlete. Who is it?

Eu sou o babaca ?

2023.05.28 15:44 Lhord_Stevenson13 Parents not with me on how to give assignments.
Hi um, this is sorta a rant and also seeking second and third opinions on an issue that has had more of a negative impact on me than I thought it would...
(Some context)... I have made a few posts asking for help on how to do some stuff in my class and I have found actual help here on this subreddit. However this is different. I'm not asking for advice, I'm asking for blunt opinions.
I would have liked to start from last year... but I guess we all don't have time. Anyway, This academic year started rough; There's a restructuring of the academic calendar and that means we have shorter terms... That's besidesl the point. If it's taking too long for me to get to it already, I'm sorry buh, let me take my time.
I'm not in The Americas or Europe. I'm in Ghana, Africa. Our education system might be a little different from most of yours but, generally there's not much difference.
I have tried my all to make my class (grade two) separate from all others. My class is special, not because I'm saying so, but because many say so .
(I'm going straight to the point now, I promise) Okay, so this is all about the stuff I teach and assignments I give to my kids to send home.
I teach what I am given (scheme of work is what we call it, based on the syllabus) but in the way that I find best. Because I am the class teacher, and that is what class teachers do.
I am a really young guy, as young as I can legally be. And I'm really passionate about what I do because I know I am building the foundation of our future generation and I'm really careful about how I go about teaching.
I created a parents and teacher forum (the first of its kind in my school) on WhatsApp, so I can have direct interaction with parents and relay any info to them. All was going smoothly until one one the 'learned' parents started questioning what I teach my kids.
At first, I didn't take it too seriously, because I did explain to them that I can not teach just whatever I want, and I go by the curriculum (bla, bla, bla).
This parent still would not budge. And soon enough, he got a few parents to back him up. But I wasn't worried at all. Because any complaints made to the management would be looked at and nullified, since it would be confirmed that I do not teach what I want to, but go by what I've been given.
The second issue was how I set my assignments for (or homework as we call it). I would like to say that, I consider myself an intellectual, whose actions are based on his own philosophy, created wholly by him or borrowed from others. I know I'm an intellectual, but I also know I do not and can not know everything about everything (it's not like I don't try). I have sacrificed many things to become who I am and I do not regret it one bit. So if I seem a little too condescending or full of myself, maybe that's why.
Or maybe it's because I'm angry cos I feel like something is being taken away from me...
Anyway, when I was appointed my current position last year, I decided on changing a few things, and that included the manner in which I give assignments. I used to give multiple choice questions as homework, but I changed that quickly and here's my reasoning:
Learning does not end in school. And as kids, they need to spend a greater part of their day learning. That doesn't mean they should not play (God forbid I say anything as such). Children literally need to play, spend time with their friends, watch TV and stuff. But I know for a fact that most of my kids do not learn at home. Most come to school, play, go home and play some more. So I decided that if parents would not work on that, then I would. After all, I have been getting complaints from many of these parents that their kids do not learn at home.
What I did was to give questions without options. Thus, for example;
COMPUTING Homework State the functions of the following
- Monitor
- Plotter
- Television
- Speaker
- Projector
OR HISTORY Homework Answer the following correctly
- Okomfo Anokye Sword Site is in what hospital?
- The hospital is in what town?
- What is planted in the ground?
- Who planted the sword?
- If the sword is pulled out, what would happen?
This (I thought) would maximise lesson periods in the house, since homework time would be the only time most of them would actually take a book. These kids can't read (I know) so the one who helped them with homeworks should sit them down, ask them questions and them guide them in writing the answers they (the kids) give. In this way, parents should be able to know the progress of their kids in lessons and whether or not they comprehend what is being taught them.
But apparently I thought wrong (at least that's how it seems). I don't know if the complaints started this term or not... But I didn't get any, and if the principal did, then he's not been telling me.
Parents are saying my homeworks are too difficult and even junior high schoolers can't find solutions to them. This made me very distraught cos what I thought was a service has turned into a disservice.
It hurt me deeply because I love my class and I try everything in my little power to do the best for them.
If you have anything to tell me, say it bluntly. For I am one who does not think that truth should be padded. I might not be able to answer immediately, but I will. And if you need any clarification, just ask.
As I said, this is a rant and I most definitely have left some things out...
Thank you very much.

2023.05.28 10:06 Geist_Lain Texas AG Ken Paxton impeached, suspended from duties; will face Senate trial
Defying a last-minute appeal by former President Donald Trump, the Texas House voted overwhelmingly Saturday to impeach Attorney General Ken Paxton, suspending him from office over allegations of misconduct that included bribery and abuse of office.
The vote to adopt the 20 articles of impeachment was 121-23.
The stunning vote came two days after an investigative committee unveiled the articles â and two days before the close of a biennial legislative session that saw significant right-wing victories, including a ban on transgender health care for minors and new restrictions on public universitiesâ diversity efforts.
The vote revealed substantial divisions within the Republican Party of Texas â the largest, richest and most powerful state GOP party in the United States. Although the party has won every statewide election for a quarter-century and has controlled both houses of the Legislature since 2003, it has deep underlying fissures, many of them exacerbated by Trumpâs rise and influence.
Few attorneys general have been as prominent as Paxton, who made a career of suing the Obama and Biden administrations. One of Trumpâs closest allies in Texas, along with Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Paxton unsuccessfully sued to challenge the 2020 presidential election results in four states.
Attention now shifts to the Texas Senate, which will conduct a trial with senators acting as jurors and designated House members presenting their case as impeachment managers.
Permanently removing Paxton from office and barring him from holding future elected office in Texas would require the support of two-thirds of senators.
Impeachment was supported by 60 Republicans, including Speaker Dade Phelan and all five of the representatives from Collin County â where Paxton and his wife have lived for decades. All 23 votes in opposition came from Republicans.
Afterward, Paxton called the vote âillegal, unethical, and profoundly unjust,â adding that he looked forward to a quick resolution in the Senate.
The move to impeach came less than a week after the House General Investigating Committee revealed that it was investigating Paxton for what members described as a yearslong pattern of misconduct and questionable actions that include bribery, dereliction of duty and obstruction of justice. They presented the case against him Saturday, acknowledging the weight of their actions.
âToday is a very grim and difficult day for this House and for the state of Texas,â Rep. David Spiller, R-Jacksboro, a committee member, told House members.
âWe have a duty and an obligation to protect the citizens of Texas from elected officials who abuse their office and their powers for personal gain,â Spiller said. âAs a body, we should not be complicit in allowing that behavior.â
Paxton supporters criticized the impeachment proceedings as rushed, secretive and based on hearsay accounts of actions taken by Paxton, who they said was not given the opportunity to defend himself to the investigating committee.
âThis process is indefensible,â said Rep. John Smithee, R-Amarillo, who complained that the vote was taking place on a holiday weekend before members had time to conduct a thorough review of the accusations. âIt concerns me a lot because today it could be General Paxton, tomorrow it could be you and the next day it could be me.â
Saturdayâs vote temporarily removes a controversial but influential Republican figure in Texas and nationally. He has led an office that initiated lawsuits that overturned or blocked major Biden and Obama administration policies, particularly on immigration; sought to reverse Trumpâs electoral defeat in 2020; aggressively pursued voter fraud claims; and targeted hospitals that provided gender care to minors.
The Legislature had impeached state officials just twice since 1876 â and never an attorney general â but the House committee members who proposed impeachment argued Saturday that Paxtonâs misconduct in office was so egregious that it warranted his removal.
âThis gentleman is no longer fit for service or for office,â said committee member Rep. Ann Johnson, D-Houston. âEither this is going to be the beginning of the end of his criminal reign, or God help us with the harms that will come to all Texans if he's allowed to stay the top cop on the take, if millions of Texans canât trust us to do the right thing, right here, right now.â
Rep. Charlie Geren, R-Fort Worth, a member of the investigative committee, used his presentation time to criticize Paxton for calling representatives as they worked on the House floor to âpersonally threaten them with political consequences in the next electionâ if they supported impeachment.
Speaking against impeachment, Rep. Tony Tinderholt, R-Arlington, called the process âwrong.â
âDonât end our session this way. Donât tarnish this institution,â Tinderholt said. âDonât cheapen the act of impeachment. Donât undermine the will of the voters. Donât give Democrats another victory handed to them on a silver platter.â
The vote came as hardline conservatives supportive of Paxtonâs aggressive strategy of suing the Biden administration were lining up in support of him. Trump â a close political ally to Paxton â blasted the impeachment proceedings as an attempt to unseat âthe most hard working and effectiveâ attorney general and thwart the âlarge number of American Patriotsâ who voted for Paxton.
Trump vowed to target any Republican who supported impeaching Paxton, adding after the vote: âWhat is our Country coming to?â In the evening, he called Abbott âmissing in action,â asking followers on his Truth Social network, âWhere is the Governor of Texas on his Attorney Generalâs Impeachment?â
As lawmakers listened to the committee members make their case, Paxton took to social media to boost conservatives who had come to his defense, including Trump, U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Georgia, and conservative radio host Grant Stinchfield, who tweeted, âKangaroo Court in Texas.â
About 90 minutes into the debate, the official Twitter account of the Texas attorney generalâs office began tweeting at members of the committee to challenge some of the claims being made.
âPlease tell the truth,â the agencyâs account said.
Under the Texas Constitution, Paxton is suspended from office pending the outcome of the Senate trial. The Senate had recessed before the House voted to impeach, and Patrick, who presides over the Senate, did not immediately respond to a request for comment about a timeline for an impeachment trial.
Because Paxton was impeached while the Legislature was in session, the Texas Constitution requires the Senate to remain in Austin after the regular session ends Monday or set a trial date for the future, with no deadline for a trial spelled out in the law.
The constitution also allows the governor to appoint a provisional replacement. Gov. Greg Abbott had not weighed in on the calls to impeach Paxton and his office did not immediately respond to a request for comment Saturday.
Impeachment represents the greatest political threat to date for Paxton, who has been reelected twice despite a 2015 indictment for felony securities fraud and an ongoing federal investigation into allegations of official misconduct that began in 2020.
The impeachment vote capped a tumultuous week at the Capitol. From Tuesday to Thursday:
Paxton abruptly accused Phelan of presiding over the chamber while drunk and demanded that he resign.
The House General Investigating Committee revealed it had been investigating Paxton in secret since March.
The committee heard a three-hour presentation from its investigators detailing allegations of corruption against the attorney general.
The committeeâs three Republicans and two Democrats voted to forward 20 articles of impeachment to the full House.
Paxton, who was comfortably elected to a third term last year, made a rare appearance before assembled reporters Friday to criticize the process, saying he was not given a chance to present favorable evidence. He called impeachment an effort by Democrats and âliberalâ Republicans to remove him from office, violating the will of voters and sidelining an effective warrior against Biden administration policies.
âThe corrupt politicians in the Texas House are demonstrating that blind loyalty to Speaker Dade Phelan is more important than upholding their oath of office,â Paxton said. He added, âThey are showcasing their absolute contempt for the electoral process.â
Many of the articles of impeachment focused on allegations that Paxton had repeatedly abused his powers of office to help a political donor and friend, Austin real estate developer Nate Paul.
In fall 2020, eight top deputies in the attorney generalâs office approached federal and state investigators to report their concerns about Paxtonâs relationship with Paul.
All eight quit or were fired in the following months, and most of the details of their allegations against Paxton were revealed in a lawsuit by four former executives who claim they were fired â in violation of the Texas Whistleblower Act â in retaliation for reporting Paxton to the authorities. Paxtonâs bid to dismiss the lawsuit is awaiting action by the Dallas-based 5th Court of Appeals.
According to the lawsuit, the whistleblowers accused Paxton of engaging in a series of âintense and bizarreâ actions to help Paul, including intervening in an open-records case to help Paul gain documents from federal and state investigations into the real estate investorâs businesses. They also accused Paxton of directing his agency to intervene in a lawsuit between Paul and a charity, pushing through a rushed legal opinion to help Paul avoid a pending foreclosure sale on properties and ignoring agency rules to hire an outside lawyer to pursue an investigation helpful to Paulâs businesses.
In return, the whistleblower lawsuit alleged, Paul paid for all or part of a major renovation of a home Paxton owns in Austin. Paul also helped Paxton keep an extramarital affair quiet by employing the woman Paxton had been seeing, the lawsuit said, adding that the attorney general may also have been motivated by a $25,000 contribution Paul made to Paxtonâs campaign in 2018.
In their report to the House General Investigating Committee on Wednesday, the panelâs investigators concluded that Paxton may have committed numerous crimes and violated his oath of office.
Investigators said possible felonies included abuse of official capacity by, among other actions, diverting staff time to help Paul at a labor cost of at least $72,000; misuse of official information by possibly helping Paul gain access to investigative documents; and retaliation and official oppression by firing employees who complained of Paxtonâs actions to the FBI.
The articles of impeachment accused Paxton of accepting bribes, disregarding his official duties and misapplying public resources to help Paul.
The articles also referred to felony charges of securities fraud, and one felony count of failing to register with state securities officials, that have been pending against Paxton since 2015, months after he took office as attorney general. The fraud charges stem from Paxtonâs work in 2011 to solicit investors in Servergy Inc. without disclosing that the McKinney company was paying him for the work.
The impeachment articles also accused Paxton of obstruction of justice by acting to delay the criminal cases with legal challenges and because a Paxton donor pursued legal action that limited the pay to prosecutors in the case, causing further delays âto Paxtonâs advantage.â
Taken in total, the accusations showed a pattern of dereliction of duty in violation of the Texas Constitution, Paxtonâs oaths of office and state laws against public officials acting against the publicâs interest, the impeachment resolution said.
âPaxton engaged in misconduct, private or public, of such character as to indicate his unfitness for office,â the articles said.
An attorney general had never before been impeached by the Legislature, an extraordinary step that lawmakers have reserved for public officials who faced serious allegations of misconduct. Only two Texas officials have been removed from office by Senate conviction, Gov. James Ferguson in 1917 and District Judge O.P. Carrillo in 1975.
If Paxton is to survive, he will need to secure the support of 11 senators. With the 12 Democratic senators likely to support his removal, any votes for acquittal would need to come from the 19 Republican members.
Several Republican senators issued statements Saturday evening warning constituents and others that their role as jurors in the upcoming impeachment trial prohibited them from discussing the case. In a television interview Thursday, Patrick said merely that he believed senators would be responsible jurors and âdo their duty.â
A complicating factor is Sen. Angela Paxton, R-McKinney, Paxtonâs wife. State law requires all senators to attend an impeachment trial, though whether she will recuse herself from voting is unclear.
Paxtonâs political base lies in the far-right faction of the Republican Party, where he has positioned himself as a champion of conservative causes and a thorn in the side of Democratic President Joe Biden. Paxton has criticized his opponents as RINOs (Republicans in name only) who âwant nothing more than to sabotage our legal challenges to Bidenâs extremist agenda by taking me out.â
He also retained the backing of the state Republican Party, led by former state Rep. Matt Rinaldi, who frequently attacks Republicans he considers to be insufficiently conservative. On Friday, Rinaldi said the impeachment was Phelanâs fault for allowing Democrats to have too much influence in the House.
âThe impeachment proceedings against the attorney general are but the latest front in the Texas Houseâs war against Republicans to stop the conservative direction of her state,â Rinaldi said in a statement.
Paxton also has maintained a close relationship with Trump and filed an unsuccessful U.S. Supreme Court challenge to the 2020 presidential election. Paxton also spoke at Trumpâs rally in Washington on Jan. 6, 2021, shortly before the presidentâs supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol.
Ken Paxton has plagued Texas for far too long. I'm glad to see a modicum of justice being done.

2023.05.28 08:40 luke-2018 Eu serei o babaca se terminar por whatsapp?
Contexto:

2023.05.28 07:39 holy_vermin95 THE COMPLETE LORE OF SLEEP TOKEN
The complete lore of Sleep Token (as I see it). Bear in mind this is after a sudden urge to understand the lore and create a timeline of events. I know many of y'all have been doing this longer, this is just my interpretation of the timeline assuming every song is in sequence.
As I've said before in another post, I see the story of Sleep Token as the redemption story of Vessel (the character) who is being punished by some unknown force through a deity named Sleep. Sleep is unaware of this and just sees Vessel as "another vessel" to feast on and ruin, but because Vessel is stronger and wants to improve he breaks free by the end of TMBTE with a new outlook on life. So I'll be interpreting the story with that in mind. Here's the story:
I. ONE
- "Thread the Needle" - (Sleep -> Vessel) Sleep seduces Vessel for the first time, and already starts to take control of Vessel's mind by making time dilate. They offer Vessel someone to confide in, and to erase his past mistakes with. "Bury me inside this labyrinth bed" just signifies Vessel going to sleep.
- "Fields of Elation" - (Vessel) Vessel's perspective as he succumbs to Sleep for the first time. He's "losing faith in their time apart" and thinks "nobody else can pull him out" of his past mistakes. This in my opinion makes Vessel much more complex than I imagined. Yes, Sleep is a malicious force that devours souls and feasts on vulnerable people by manipulating them, but Vessel also only values Sleep because they make him feel better about his past. They both do not value one another and are only with each other to serve themselves. The foundation of a toxic relationship.
- "When the Bough Breaks" - (Sleep -> Vessel) Sleep begins to gaslight Vessel. They tell him he's powerless without them and makes him feel bad about himself saying he "doesn't love, just hates to be alone" so he'll be scared and never leave. Sleep also does not believe Vessel is devoted to them and repeats the line "don't lie to me" probably in response to what Vessel says in "Fields of Elation" about Sleep being the only one to pull him out and how devoted he is to them. They also expand on how great they would be together.
II. TWO
- "Calcutta" - (Vessel -> Sleep) This EP came a year after the last one so this song just serves as an update to everyone getting everyone up to speed on Vessel and Sleep's relationship without adding any new significant events. Vessel just gushes over Sleep and tells them how they make him feel whole.
- "Nazareth" - Probably the darkest song in their entire catalog. As Sleep was skeptical of Vessel's devotion to them before, Vessel aims to prove his devotion by torturing and inflicting pain to his past lover (whom he probably already treated wrong considering his "past mistakes" that he seeks to overcome the guilt of with Sleep, this is a huge leap but let's call her Eden). The constant use of "load the gun", "I'll show you what you look like from the inside", and "See if she can guess what a hollow point does to a naked body" show that Vessel intends to shoot her, and I believe he does. Sleep now believes Vessel.
- "Jericho" - (Sleep) This song is basically Sleep just boasting after finally acquiring Vessel as a... well, vessel. They talk about how they "dine on old encounters" before telling Vessel he is completely under their thumb and tells him to "say their name again". This song also seems to be frantically skipping between Vessel and Sleep. "My hands are not worthy" is Vessel reflecting what he's done while Sleep boasts about their victory and control over Vessel.
III. JAWS - (Vessel -> Sleep) Now that Vessel and Sleep are entangled, Vessel asks Sleep to show him love by eating him. Now it is unclear whether this is what Vessel truly likes or if Sleep makes him believe that, but either way this is what Sleep wanted so they're okay with it. There's many more times Vessel asks Sleep to "take a bite" of him and many more references to vorarephilia (even a song called "Vore") so maybe Vessel just wants that.
IV. "The Way that You Were" - (Vessel -> Eden) This songs seems to be about Vessel reminiscing about Eden perhaps talking to her in a dream (considering they're probably not on speaking terms after he literally shot her). Eden is a very troubled soul, with repeated patterns of self harm, and Vessel has an imaginary conversation with her talking about it. Vessel shows no remorse for how he treated her and does not comfort her in any way, showing he has a long way to go for his redemption (in "Are You Really Okay?"). He just says all these things in a very stoic fashion.
V. SUNDOWNING
- "The Night Does Not Belong To God" - (Vessel) Again like "Calcutta" this song serves as a way to get us up to speed on Vessel and Sleep's relationship. Sleep comes to Vessel when he um, falls asleep and talks to him then. Vessel sees this as pure bliss as he repeats "the night comes down like heaven". Vessel also knows Sleep "will not be his" which acts as foreshadowing for the rest of the album as he slowly realises Sleep does not care about his well being and is with him only for their own selfish interest.
- "The Offering" - (Vessel -> Sleep) Vessel offers himself up to Sleep and is fully devoted to them. More references to vorarephilia with "take a bite."
- "Levitate" - (Vessel -> Sleep) As Vessel thinks about why Sleep is so distant with him he tries to empathise with Sleep and considers that maybe Sleep themselves are hurt, but of course they aren't. Vessel offers Sleep comfort and reassurance that he can "lift them up" but secretly knows they will "levitate where he can't reach them". He knows Sleep is unattainable and only comes to him when they want something from him.
- "Dark Signs" - (Vessel -> Sleep) Vessel reflect on his childhood briefly before admitting that he saw red flags when he and Sleep met. He "misses the man he was" and "hates who he's become" under the influence of Sleep. He does so "every time he wakes up" further suggesting this. Even though he wasn't a great man before he met Sleep, he is noticeably worse now.
- "Higher" - (Vessel -> Sleep) Vessel realises his relationship with Sleep is worse for him in the end. They are "killing him slow", and he is "granting them more than the debt that he owes" meaning he is giving Sleep much more than he owes them, but he is still committed and believes every battle they have will take them "higher".
- "Take Aim" - (Vessel -> Sleep) Vessel realises Sleep does not have his best interests in mind and "led him on when the moment was perfect", but he's not ready to give up on the relationship, he's still bargaining.
- "Give" - (Vessel -> Sleep) Vessel implores Sleep to be open with him and tell him they comfort him and he wants to do the same.
- "Gods" - (Vessel -> Sleep) Vessel is driven to the brink and in a fit of rage reflects on what he is and what (perhaps) Sleep has made him. He questions Sleep and asks if they like the way their relationship feels.
- "Sugar" - (Vessel -> Sleep) Despite all the doubts he had, Vessel relapses hard into his infatuation with Sleep. He knows Sleep is toxic but romanticizes his situation, and he sees himself putting his feelings away and clinging onto the relationship as "not giving up".
- "Say That You Will" - (Vessel -> Sleep) Vessel desperately tries to have a conversation with Sleep and says he knows they're "planning to leave in the end" but wants them to tell him pretty lies and is willing to compromise even at the expense of his own well being.
- "Drag Me Under" - (Vessel -> Sleep) Vessel falls deeper into the toxic relationship believing they are meant to be, and implores Sleep to drag him further into the relationship.
- "Blood Sport" - (Vessel) This song summarises the revelations Vessel has had throughout the course of the album. He wants Sleep to open up to him, he knows his love is unrequited, but he's willing to stay at his own expense. This is also the first time the relationship between Sleep and Vessel is given a chemical connotation, suggesting that it's a much deeper connection. Vessel breaks down crying at the end of the song, feeling helpless.
VI. THIS PLACE WILL BECOME YOUR TOMB
- "Atlantic" - (Vessel) Vessel wakes up in a hospital after a failed suicide attempt, perhaps to sever his connection with Sleep, and is talked through the damage. He begs to not be woken up and slowly falls back into Sleep's grasp throughout the course of this album.
- "Hypnosis" - (Vessel -> Sleep) Vessel implores Sleep to once again lift him out, and offers himself to them despite knowing how much it affected him. "The Offering" was the same but he did not know, this song is sadder because he is helpless even after knowing and offers himself up to Sleep the exact same way.
- "Mine" - (Vessel -> Sleep) Vessel believes the relationship is destined to be and that no matter how much he tries to distance himself with Sleep, they'll surely cross paths again. He lies to himself more to make himself feel okay instead of facing the truth.
- "Like That" - (Vessel -> Sleep) Vessel is once again reminded of how toxic the relationship is and asks how Sleep is okay with doing this to him asking if they "like that". He knows he is one of many previous victims. He is aware of his inability to let go no matter you how badly Sleep treats him.
- "The Love You Want" - (Vessel -> Sleep) Vessel tries to have a conversation with Sleep, believing they saw something in him the time they met, and tells them he's still the same person but he knows he'll never be who they want.
- "Fall For Me" - (Vessel -> Sleep) Continuing from the previous song, Vessel desperately implores Sleep to "fall for him" again, because that's what he has convinced himself to believe that was.
- "Alkaline" - (Vessel) Vessel is infatuated again and can't explain it, even though he knows Sleep is changing him. He refuses to do anything about it, because he enjoys the ride. More chemical references.
- "Distraction" - (Vessel) Vessel realises he's past the point of no return and it's "too late for him" he's fallen in too deep into him relationship with Sleep.
- "Descending" - (Vessel -> Sleep) Vessel is actually very stern with Sleep and says things for what they are for the the first time.
- "Telomeres" - (Vessel -> Sleep) Vessel seemed really convinced on the previous track but now he's back to romanticizing his relationship and acknowledges that Sleep provided him comfort. This part of the album is very confusing as Vessel changes his mind about the relationship with every song. The way I see it is him trying to make sense of the relationship. He feels conflicted.
- "High Water" - (Vessel -> Sleep) Vessel chooses to ignore his own doubts about the relationship again, even though he knows it's not the best for him.
- "Missing Limbs" - (Vessel -> Eden) Vessel has another imaginary conversation, probably a dream talking to Eden saying he still loves her and his relationship with Sleep is losing its allure.
VII. TAKE ME BACK TO EDEN
- "Chokehold" - (Vessel -> Sleep) Again, this serves as an update for us setting the scene, Vessel is still firmly in Sleep's grasp.
- "The Summoning" - (Vessel -> Sleep) Vessel talks about how his relationship with Sleep is and he presents it in a very romantic way like they were destined to be together. Even though throughout the course of the album he finds the strength to move on from Sleep.
- "Granite" - (Vessel -> Sleep) Vessel says things for what they are again and seems very empowered. Like he's finally seeing the relationship from the perspective of an outsider and for what it is.
- "Aqua Regia" - (Vessel -> Sleep) Vessel talks more about his relationship with Sleep but wants to move on ("and I am done dancing to alarming bells").
- "Vore" - (Vessel -> Sleep) Vessel feels his vorarephilic urges again and wishes to be "swallowed whole" by Sleep, but he acknowledges that he is suffering and asks Sleep if they are "in pain like he is".
- "Ascensionism" - (Vessel -> Sleep) Much like "Granite", Vessel is very empowered here. He no longer feels helpless and asks Sleep to "watch him ascend". He fully acknowledges that Sleep "makes him wish he could disappear". It's taken him so long to fully admit that.
- "Are You Really Okay?" (Vessel -> Eden) Vessel fully confronts Eden about her self harm and begs her to not hurt herself again. He feels empathy for others and slowly transforms into a better person.
- "The Apparition" (Vessel -> Sleep) Vessel asks Sleep why they are never real and why they leave every time he awakes, but he also wants to nihilistically "make trouble in the dream world" because "this could be the last time" suggesting that he wants to move on.
- "DYWTYLM" (Vessel -> himself) Throughout his life and throughout the course of his relationship with Sleep, Vessel has dealt with an immense amount of self hatred and can't even smile at himself in the mirror. This song is really sad but it also shows Vessel's willingness to heal from his trauma and become a better person and learn to love himself instead of just escaping and running away from his problems like he used to.
- "Rain" (Vessel) Vessel acknowledges how much he has changed, perhaps with Sleep or just from the time he was born when he was a good person and he asks an unknown force to cleanse him of his sins. This force isn't Sleep at this point because Vessel is pretty clear about moving on.
- "Take Me Back to Eden" (Vessel -> Sleep) This is the final time Vessel addresses Sleep and it's a huge tribute to Sleep, without whom he would not have improved, but he also acknowledges the toxicity of the relationship but in a mature way. He looks back at the journey he has had and has a mature outlook on it, he was treated badly by Sleep, but he was also bad, and he's ready to move on.
- "Euclid" (Vessel) In the aftermath of it all, Vessel is ready to shed his former self and become someone new. He calls back to "The Night Does Not Belong To God" just as a tribute to acknowledge how far he has come and what a journey it has been.
If you've read this far, thank you so much haha! This is my interpretation of just the lyrics of the songs and the story that they tell. I understand that there's much more lore to be found in Sleep Token. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Worship.

Chapter 30: A Promise Kept
Kalai stepped off the shuttle to the Vaidaâs headquarters and into a running tackle-hug from Sitry. âOh Kalai, I could
kill you right now! You got to see the Great Barrier Reef in person, you bitch!â Sitryâs cheerful voice was muffled from where she was still buried in her chest. Kalai staggered backwards a pace or two, happy to be back from her whirlwind adventure around Earth with her father.
Naranjo and Papa Rhaxiid were there on the platform to welcome her back too, but their welcomes were more sedate.
âNot to mention you got out of work for half our damn trip. Ugh, itâs
so not fair!â Naranjo huffed as Kalai gave him a sisterly hug.
Papa Rhaxiid reached up and chucked her chin before turning to lead the way back inside from the forested platform. âWelcome back, sweet-sprout, weâve missed you. Come on, weâll get you settled again and off to work. Thereâs quite a bit you need to catch up on if you want your credits.â
The chuckles from the twins behind her were full of sibling malice, but she knew how to shut the pair of them up. âPapa Rhaxiid? Iâve got the paper on Biodiversity in the Reef you asked for, along with the dissection report and stomach content analysis of the tuna we caught. I want to put the finishing touches on it and do a final proofread first before I send them to you.â The man turned and gave her a warm smile as they entered the building.
âGood, why donât you go take your things back up and say hello to Andy? Iâll give you an hour and a half to get freshened up, then I want you to report to Aquarium 12 with Dr. Sorâansa. You can put your snorkeling practice to work there.â Papa Rhaxiid walked the three of them to the residential elevator. âIâm heading back to my office. Andyâs been requested by Maetro Paeâella to work the kitchens for something called âBison burgers'. Apparently itâs a type of indigenous bovine that the eastern Bands raise. That and something from Europe called âFrench Friesâ.â
Kalai couldnât help but get excited as she and her siblings piled into the elevator back to their little shared apartment. Sure the food sheâd had all over the place was good, but so far nothing had been able to compare to Andy and his Salishian cooking.
âNerd, I canât believe you cheated and did work on your vacation." Naranjo broke the silence of the elevator after a little bit and stuck his tongue out at her.
â
Spit to windward, you vain little weed. Donât hate me because Iâm awesome.â Kalaiâs riposte caused Naranjo to fold his arms and huff. Sitry simply ambushed her with an ear flick.
The elevator door opened to their floor before Kalai couldnât bear the silence from Sitry any longer. âSo, did you bag him yet, you lucky bitch?â
âNo she hasnât!â Naranjoâs singsong mockery of his sister interrupted Sitryâs response. âPapa hasnât let Sitry even NEAR Andy without one of them around!â
âRub it in, you snitch, besides, he
did kiss me first,â Sitry preened happily as she playfully shoved Kalaiâs shoulder.
Kalai pretended to stumble and almost caught Sitryâs foot, but she was just a hair too slow. âYeah, and then you gave him a black eye, you clod.â
âWill you let it go? It was an
accident!â
âItâs not even the only one he got either." Naranjoâs interjection stopped her right in front of their door.
âWait, what?
Who hurt him this time?â Kalai let her bag thunk to the floor as she turned to look accusingly between Sitry and Narny.
Sitry folded her arms and her ears twitched back as she shot a dark look at their door. âHe âfell downâ yesterday while out at one of the Hatcheries we gave to the Hwatcoms. Mrs. Toloui nearly had a fit! She said she could smell another human on him and that he was covered in blood!â
Narny nodded primly as Kalai tried to process what they were telling her. âWHAT? Did she call out the militia? Track down whoever hurt him?â
âNo, and he refused treatment and insisted that no one did it to him! When papa tried to talk to him, Andy said some stupid human macho shit about pain healing and birds liking scars. I donât know, sometimes humans⊠theyâre frickinâ insane!â
The door shot open and there stood Andy. His left eye was an angry puffy yellow and blue mess, and there were three points on his lips where a dark cinnabar line marked a crack. Kalai and her siblings stood in wide eyed shock at his sudden appearance and the only sound was the music emanating from the common room behind him.
Andy looked up and down at the three without saying a word. He cocked an eyebrow and snagged Kalaiâs bag before any of them could react and cleared the doorway for them.
Kalai sputtered at the impropriety but Naranjo and Sitry just shrugged and walked in after Andy. âFemboys, am I right?â Narny whispered to Kalai as he passed. Kalai followed behind and was greeted by the white fluff-ball, Puck, who hopped up and down, whining for attention. She bent down and started scratching his ears and back. While Puck rubbed up against her hands, Andy settled back down at the table where his omnipad was hooked up to a keypad. Her heart started to sink a bit and Kalai shot Sitry a jealous look before the music came to a sudden halt and Andy interrupted the beginnings of her pity party.
âOk, Kemâira, I got the pics now and Iâm telling you to
declare yourself to the farmers
first! I guarantee if you tell them youâre with the new DNR and youâre there to kill all the Scotch Broom in their pasture lands, theyâll stop trying to shoot you for trespassing!â
Kalaiâs mood jumped up a bit.
Itâs not that he doesnât care to see me, heâs in a meeting! âNo, no Iâm not coming out to talk this over with them, Iâve got my own work to do! Either you start talking to folks like I showed you how, or ask the militia to give you one of their armored catsuits to wear under your uniform⊠Uh-huh, good luck." Andy hung up on the call and leaned back as Puck scampered over and hopped up in his lap.
Andy rubbed his temples before shaking his head. He seemed to relax a bit and Puck slid off to follow Sitry to the kitchen. Andy looked over and gave Kalai a happy smile that made her flush. âWelcome back! So how was the land down under? That tuna was fan-frickinâ-tastic, if you arenât sick of seafood Iâll do something fancy with it tomorrow to celebrate your coming back. Canât tonight though, I got volun-told to be head chef tonight and I⊠Oh damnit! Iâm late! Come to dinner, burgers and fries Indian style tonight. Gotta run!â With that, Andy went dashing out the door with Puck barking and scrambling along after him.
Kalai felt her heart sink back down again, as he left. âAndy I-â She started but he was gone.
âYeah, itâs been like that for the whole week. The only time we get to hang out is dinner.â Sitry commiserated as she took Kalaiâs bag into their room. âOn the other hand, we might get to catch up during the family meal tonight.â
The dinner was delicious, though a bit weird. It tasted alright, but there was a certain aftertaste on the sandwich that just didnât sit right with Kalai. She just couldnât put her finger on it. The french fries more than made up for it though, and Mama Sakalbi had to hold a science trivia contest to see who got the last little handful.
Kalai and Narny were already silently plotting with each other for their revenge against their sister who had won and refused to share the last few matchsticks when Andy finally joined their table. He was sweaty and he smelled of woodsmoke and french fries. Kalai jumped up and offered him a seat next to her with a nervous smile. He took it gratefully and seemed to sag a bit as he gulped down a glass of water.
âAndy, I think you may be finding your calling as a culinary ambassador,â Mama Aftasia beamed. âA toast to the chef!â
Andy gave a shy smile and looked down as Kalai and the rest of the family gave a hearty âHere, here!â
âItâs a simple enough recipe; itâs just using bison instead of cow, thatâs all, and I donât know anyone whoâd turn down hand cut fresh fries. Itâs kind of hard to screw up.â
âYoung man, you are speaking to a woman who found a way to take cold water and dried wumpa flakes and wind up with a Class-4 fire. Cooking has always seemed like âblight mysticismâ to me, and these foods? These flavors? Nothing short of a Greenwood miracle in my opinion." Mama Aftasia continued her praise of Andy, which only caused him to shrink even lower in his seat.
âTo be honest, I like your salmon better,â Kalai said, and the whole table went silent. Kalai held her ground though, and was rewarded with a tired but genuine laugh from Andy that brought him back out of his shell.
âYou know, I do too. My Clan were fisherpeople, not buffalo chasers.â Andy gave Kalai a cheeky grin, which she returned happily, her heart glowing. Mama Aftasia and Mama Sakalbi both blinked in bemusement at Andyâs statement while Sitry just giggled.
âSpeaking of which, Andy, I received a call from Elder Alex Hwatcom.â Papa Rhaxiidâs change of subject instantly perked Andy up, and he stared silently, waiting. âHe extended an invitation to our family to attend his family gathering this Friday-â
âAlex said that? He used those words?â Andy shook his head in shock as he interrupted Papa Rhaxiid. The table went quiet and everyone held their breath as they looked between the two men.
Papa Rhaxiid adopted as good an impression of the human Elder as he could. âIâd like to extend an invitation for you and your family to be guests at our family gathering this saturday up at the White⊠something⊠lodge-â
âThe White Ram Lodge?â Andy sat forward, interjecting again as the color drained from his face.
âYes, thatâs the one! I asked if we could bring anything since the last time they hosted us they put on that wonderful spread. He said if we could bring a few salmon for the family, that would be wonderful.â
Andy leaned back and took another sip of ice water before holding the glass to his blackened eye. âAlex Hwatcom⊠just invited you⊠to a gathering⊠and he told you to âbring a few salmonâ? Do you realize what a huge honor this is?â
Rhaxiid looked from his wives to his children with mild concern. âUm, I thought it was only dinner, but your reaction tells me thereâs more significance to this than I originally thought. I was thinking about our stocks of adult Sockeye, but then I remembered in his story how important King Salmon are. Of course, Iâd like to defer to you for the choice since you know these animals and the cultural expectations with this invitation better than we do.â
Andy was silent for a moment before he put the glass down. âIâd recommend a âhard noâ to all your clone stock!â Now it was the Vaidasâ turn to be shocked, as each of Kalaiâs Erbian familyâs jaws dropped in synch. Before anyone could say anything, Andy continued, âYou need to bring wild-caught. Farm-raised salmon wouldnât⊠well we can tell, and you can taste the difference between them. We need to go fishing!â Kalai leaned towards Andy slightly as he lowered his head and started mumbling to himself. She was just able to make out what he was saying to himself as Mama Sakalbi and Mama Aftasia began whispering to each other. â...need to get the Gillnetter out of storage, check whatâs running and select the mesh. Iâm gonna need a deckhand too.â
Kalai reached a hand out but stopped short of touching him. âAndy?â
He popped up and spoke for the whole table to hear. âI need a shuttle to the mainland and a waiver against the fishing ban. Iâve got to get my boat and the drum ready for sea â Rhaxiid and Aftasia sputtered in confusion, but Mama Sakalbi had a shadow fall over her, and her ears pulled back.
âDo you mean to say you want to go out on the water? Risk the ecological balance for⊠dinner?â
Andy looked Sakalbi dead in the eye and gave her a firm nod. âWhy donât you come out and see how we did this before you got here. Think of it as a chance to see the way weâve fished for the last hundred or so years, and then I can explain the way we used to fish before that.â
The offer snapped Rhaxiid out of his confusion and he brightened. âA learning experience? Wonderful, weâll make a day of it!â His hands shot out to grab both his wivesâ and Kalai could feel the vibrations in the floor from where he was excitedly tapping his feet.
âIf you donât mind hard, smelly work. Uncle Willy always called it âthe worst desk in the prettiest office.' Itâll be a bit cramped, but Iâve got room on the boat for a few guests and observers; four I think would be ok. Sheâs a working boat, not a pleasure cruiser,â Andy explained. That sent the whole lot of them excitedly talking among themselves.
Kalai was about to lean in to talk to Mama Aftasia, but Andy caught her attention first. âI donât suppose youâd want to go back out on the water, given you just got back from pleasure-boating-â
Kalaiâs heart nearly jumped out of her chest. âI wouldnât miss it for my own colony planet!â
--------------------
Kalai stood on the pier, bundled in her thermal sailorâs coat. It was still dark and the wind blew from the north in a cold little morning breeze. Kalai took a deep breath and reveled in the smell of the fresh sea air. The soft chattering of Mama Sakalbiâs teeth broke the silence. âItâs a bit chillier than it said it was going to be.â
âThe water always does that. Itâs never as warm as the lubbers say itâll be,â Papa spoke as he handed her back her thermos of hot chocolate.
Papa stood next to Kalai and nudged her with his elbow. Even in the dark, Kalai could see him smile up at her and jerk his head at the shivering Erbian. He was also wearing a thermal sailorâs coat, and his hands were stuffed in his pockets to keep them warm, just like Kalaiâs. âLandswoman,â he whispered to her and the two of them shared a knowing smile. It was strange, but welcome when she'd told Papa about her upcoming day fishing with Andy, and heâd politely requested to join them. Papa Rhaxiid had graciously given his spot up to accommodate her birth father. Narny was all for it until Andy had explained what they were going to do, but then surrendered his challenge to the fourth guest space, not wanting to go anywhere NEAR anything that could see him come face to face with a Lionâs Mane Jelly. Sitry had done a happy little dance when she found out, but only yesterday had come down with Thistle Fever, and was bundled off to bed by her parents. It left Kalai, Mama Sakalbi, and Papa to accompany Andy on his fishing trip.
The water brushed against the shore behind them quietly. In the gloom, Kalai could just barely make out the outline of the nearest island mountain, but only because the stars had disappeared behind it. It was almost four in the morning, but Kalai had managed a catnap on the shuttle to the empty little lot that had been the boat launch. Aside from the water, the world was silent. Even the breeze made almost no noise and a sense of peace surrounded them. Everything was so calm, Kalai felt like she didnât have a care in the world.
In the distance, a low rumbling sound of a motor rose from being almost imperceptible to a rolling drum of thunder. From around the point, two green floating lights sped through the darkness, and a spotlight turned on. The beam of light moved jerkily until it came to rest on the pier where they were standing and Kalai started waving her arms. Sakalbiâs omnipad rang, and Andyâs voice shouted over the speaker and the background noise for them to shine a light on the edge of the pier to help him park the boat.
Kalai and Papa moved closer and turned their omnipad flashlights on and waved them as the boat swung gracefully around and glided in alongside them. Kalai caught the rope that flew over the railing of the boat and she heard more than saw Andy moving around on the deck as she tied off on one of the mooring cleats. Several lights clicked on and the deck was bathed in light enough for Kalai to get a clear view of the boat theyâd be spending the day on.
Andy hadnât lied. Kalai saw that this little vessel was a working boat with no frills at all. When heâd told her theyâd be going fishing, sheâd envisioned something like the charter boat papa had taken her on out of Nantucket. Sporty, fast with a nod to comfort and function. This was not that at all. A giant wheel as wide as Kalaiâs outstretched arms that looked like a sideways spool of thread was secured to the deck amidships and dominated the deckspace. Wrapped around it was a fluorescent green tangle with a line of oblong white and yellow corks and rope. There was a covered hatchway sitting behind the drum in front of the raised step to the enclosed cabin. Two large windows let the light out to two childrenâs bunks, a little table with a booth seat and a raised captainâs chair in front of the helm and engine controls. Andy shut down the engine and that peaceful stillness returned.
âOway there!â Kalai called, âship oway! Request permission to come aboard.â Kalai gave the traditional greeting of a Shilâvati sailor.
âPermission granted! Anyone need a stepstool?â Andy finally stepped into the light and Kalai got a look at him. He was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and the same bright orange coveralls sheâd seen the fishmongers wearing on their date.
âI wouldnât mind a hand, Mr. Shelokset.â Papa Heâosforos braced a foot on the railing of the boat and Andy pulled him up.
âJust call me Andy, Doc, and welcome aboard. Jackie should be along any minute now with the dayâs groceries, and the cabinâs out of the cold. You can get yourself set wherever you find comfortable.â Papa nodded and disappeared around the other side of the wheel moving towards the bow.
Kalai helped Mama Sakalbi into the boat next, and she quickly ducked into the cabin that took up the entire stern section save for a little ledge that ran along the outside. Andy gripped Kalaiâs hand and she smiled as he pulled her deftly aboard. The boat rocked a little on its mooring, and Kalai almost fell into Andy, who wordlessly put his arms around her waist to catch her as she lost her balance. She flailed for a moment before she steadied herself against him.
âGotcha,â Andy smiled, and Kalai could see him flush almost as much as she could feel herself doing as their noses almost touched. Those big dark brown eyes surrounded by white orbs drew her in and she felt she could lose herself in them. Kalai started as Andy danced her around him and moved her towards the cabin door.
âIt might be a little cramped for you in there, but the Mary Jean wasnât built for pleasure boating, sheâs a working girl. Sit tight, I gotta check a few things in the back.â Andy patted the railing affectionately before he hopped up and scooted along the outside of the cabin towards the stern. Kalai couldnât help the little longing groan that came out as he left her there on the little tiny quarterdeck. Her heart was hammering in her chest as half formed fantasies danced at the edges of her mind.
âI saw that, little minnow.â Papaâs voice was soft, but his tone and the sudden broken silence nearly gave her a heart attack.
Kalai could only stammer as her father stared at her with a cocked eyebrow. A thump from the cabin window behind saw an amused Mama Sakalbi daintily sipping at her thermos with her ears twitched forward in interest, staring out at her. âPapa I⊠he-â
Papa moved carefully around the covered hatchway to stand next to her, leaning back against the cabin window and heaved a sigh. âI must say Iâm surprised. This lovely manâs got good clean lines and is very well cared for. It speaks well of his Skipper.â
It took a full minute for Kalaiâs brain to process that he was talking about the boat and not Andy. âAnd the way Andy brought him in smooth in near complete darkness? It gives me confidence in his abilities.â
Kalai breathed a silent sigh of relief and exasperation. Although she was happy to be spending more time with her father, bringing him on what sheâd hoped would be a sailing date wasnât exactly what sheâd had in mind for âfamily timeâ. He wants me to find a nice young man and spend time with him on a boat, but the first chance I get Papa decides to clam-jam me.
From up on shore, the sound and lights of a large human vehicle screeching to a halt heralded the last of their party to arrive. Kalai heard the clomping footsteps coming down the pier and moved to the railing to lend a hand.
âAhoy Mary Jean! Raggedy Andy, you there?â Kalai stared with wide eyed surprise to see a human female, loaded down with plastic bags and sporting two human weapons on her shoulder. The two of them locked eyes, and while Kalai didnât understand everything the girl shouted in surprise, she had caught and understood the phrase, âWhat the fuck?â
âEasy now, theyâre my guests, and the one inside is the boss!â Andy appeared on the pier instantly before either Kalai or the woman could react further.
âYa didnât tell me we were having pur-â The woman glared at Kalai and her father. She had switched to Vatikre thankfully, but her tone was hostile as she dropped everything but her weapons. âI mean, hwunâeetums, aboard. A gal could get the wrong idea pretty quick in the dark when thereâs no warning.â
âKnock it off Jackie. Letâs get the grub aboard and shove off.â Andy picked up some of the bags and took the guns as Kalai offered a helping hand over the railing. âOh, Kalai, this is Jackie. Jackie? Kalai. Thatâs her dad over there, Doc Heâosforos. He saw and treated Kay Tee a few years back.â Andy jerked his head towards the direction of Kalaiâs father as she held out a hand to the human girl. On a quick inspection, she appeared to be about the same age as her and Andy. She had a round face and was about as dark complected as Andy was. She was shorter, only a few inches taller than Papa, but when Jackie grabbed Kalaiâs hand to hop up onto the rail, she could feel the strength and the compact muscle hidden by the baggy sweatshirt and pants.
âWait a minute, did you say Mini-Me over there saw Kay Tee? Youâre fuckinâ with me!â Jackie stumbled a bit as she hopped down onto the deck with a loud thunk and advanced on Papa who shrank away at her advance. âYou saw liâl Kay Tee? Where the fuck is he? Is he alright? Is he still fighting the good fight?â
âLast I saw, yes, he was âfighting the good fight.ââ Papa looked over at Andy with a slightly worried expression. Andy smacked the girl in the back of the head, causing her to flinch and she opened the door to the cabin for Andy to go inside.
Jackie rubbed the back of her head and laughed. âWell thatâs a little bit of alright, innit? Maybe todayâs gonna be a good day after all!â
âJackie, get suited up and get on the bow. I need a good pair of eyes on the roller horns,â Kalai heard Andy shout from the cabin, followed by a whole lot of thumping and banging from cabinets being opened and closed.
âYou got it, olâ man. We going to your place or mine?â Jackie sidestepped in and opened a tiny little closet and pulled out a set of rain gear that was identical to what Andy was wearing. Kalai collected herself and stood in the doorway next to her father as they both leaned in.
âMine; Chuck said the Yawâmuch are running from the South. Weâll do a set norâwest of Lummi in the Rosario and see if we can get some Fraser Kings,â Andy replied as he turned the engine back on and the vessel roared to life.
âChuck? Isnât that one of your cousins? I didnât know he could keep track of the movements of Salmon, may I ask how he does it?â Mama Sakalbi perked up as she pulled a set of earplugs out of a pocket and inserted them.
Andy prevaricated a bit, looking from Jackie back to Sakalbi then to Kalai and Papa. âIâd rather not answer that-â
âBreakinâ the law, breakinâ the law! Breakinâ the law, breakinâ the law!â
Jackie began singing a human song, and Andy threw her the dirtiest of looks as she finished getting into the orange coveralls. Mama Sakalbi sputtered as Andy shrugged apologetically.
âMake a hole!â Jackie called, and she and Andy came back out as Kalai and Papa made room for them. Andy hopped back onto the dock to cast off while Papa ducked into the cabin.
âCan I help?â Kalai offered as Andy shoved the vessel off and leapt the gap over the black water below.
âYou want to be useful? Come forward! I could use an extra set of eyes!â Jackie called back, and Kalai felt a slap on her shoulder from the boisterous human woman.
------------------
Andy stood at the helm, watching Jackie and Kalai as he leaned to get a better view of them past the Net drum. The bow was lifting up again, and the gentle little swells became like speed bumps, jostling them up and down in a predictable bouncing rhythm.
âAre you sure you couldnât slow down, Andy? Itâs a bit rough, donât you think?â Sakalbi was hanging on to the table and her thermos with a worried expression on her face.
âI could, but weâll miss the morning set. We want to bomb out the buoy right when the tide changes. If weâre lucky, then weâll get around seventy or eighty by slack tide this afternoon and call it a day.â
âHow do you know where to fish?â Dr. Heâosforos was making a good show of standing and maintaining his balance with his hand on the booth.
âWell, thereâs two ways you know. The first is you fish the spots your familyâs fished since time began. Every family has about two or three different secret spots that we know thereâs fish in, and weâre pretty defensive about their locations. The second is by smell. Right now itâs the tail end of the King season, and you can smell them in the water.â Andy turned and saw the incredulity etched on the faces of the two aliens.
âNo, Iâm serious! King Salmon slime is really pungent, and you can smell them when theyâre close to the surface. We get to the fishing spot and take a deep whiff. If we smell them, weâll set the nets.â Andy laughed at the disbelief on their faces as the GPS on his omnipad beeped and he turned to sail around the last buoy and head for the fishing ground.
âIâve never noticed that in any of the Kings weâve raised-â
Andy suppressed a laugh as they caught a larger swell as they left the lee of Lummi Island. Andy reveled in the feeling of weightlessness as the deck rose up and fell out from underneath their feet, leaving everyone suspended for a moment in midair before falling back down. A massive spray of water rose and washed over the deck, drenching Kalai and Jackie, who were still forward. âCloned and farmed Kings donât have that same smell. Wild ones smell and taste different, Iâm telling you!â Andy pulled back slightly on the throttle as they climbed the next swell. âBrace!â he called as they climbed and fell once again.
There was a look of fear on Sakalbiâs face as she gripped the table for dear life, but to Andyâs surprise, the Doctor looked completely unfazed, and was handling the rise and fall of the deck like an old salt. âYou look like youâve done this before, Doc.â
âIâve done a stint or two at sea before,â he spoke, in the same tone Andy would have used when trying not to sound too confident, and Andy smiled.
âKalai keeps talking about loving the sea and sailing. Did you teach her to sail?â
âYes, me and her mothers. When they were home, we would take the family yacht out in the Vaascon Straits and sail around the Occidiens. Kalai practically spent all her early childhood on a sailboat.â
âAnd almost every waking moment on one in Junior Academy. I swear you couldnât dig her out with a trowel when she wanted to go sailing,â Sakalbi managed to add in a word as the boat slowed, and the dramatic rise and fall of the deck slowed with it.
âWhat about you, Mr. Shelokset, did your father teach you to sail too?â
âI was too young before he passed. My Great Uncle Willy taught me after I came home, and Grandma took me out to the family fishing sites when she wasnât busy with the Council. For the first two or three years after they let us come home, fishing was the only way to feed our families, but the Militia and the Cambrians would try and sink our boats or arrest us whenever we tried to go out.â
âAnd thatâs why youâre so good at maneuvering your vessel in the dark with no instruments?â Mrs. Vaida had folded her arms, and her voice twinged with that imperious tone sheâd had when theyâd first met.
Andy huffed a dry laugh. âI did what I had to for me and my people and to survive, Maâam. I donât like breaking the law or dodging lasers and gunfire, but thereâs a lot of poor families that need to eat.â
The GPS beeped, and Andy gave Mrs. Vaida a slightly defiant look to counter her furrowed brow. âWeâre here,â he said as he threw the engine in neutral and opened the cabin door.
Andy walked out and took a deep breath, but all he could smell was the net and the exhaust from the engine. âHEY JACKIE! WE SMELL MONEY?â Andy yelled out as he took stock of the sky. The first signs of sunrise were chasing all but the morning stars away and a light fog was rolling in from the north.
âFUCK YEAH I CAN SMELL âEM, ANDY! LETâS BOMB OUT AND GET BREAKFAST GOING!â Jackie looked slightly manic as she smiled brightly. Kalai, on the other hand, looked wet and miserable as she shivered, arms wrapped around herself. Andy gave his cousin a disgusted look as he pieced together what had happened. Every deckhand learned when to duck behind the raised bow and the roller horns that guided the nets so as not to get a faceful of spray when cutting through a swell. It was also a classic hazing trick for Senior Deckhands to let Junior Deckhands learn this the hard way.
Andy moved forward to stand in front of the two of them. Kalai was trying to squeeze her coat dry, but Andy knew it wouldnât do much good until the sun came out. Jackie at least had the sense to look a little remorseful. âKalai, why donât you go sit in the cabin and get out of that wet coat. Itâs cold enough out here even for us-â
âNo way, Andy. Junior deckhand Kally here wants to impress you and get her dainty soft hands dirty! Sheâs been bragging about being a sailorwoman and wants to learn to fish âyour way!â Jackie gave Kalaiâs shoulder a wet slap as the poor alien woman went blue. Out of cold or embarrassment, Andy couldnât tell.
All Andy could do was shake his head and huff. âOk then! Secure the buoy and sling on my mark. Iâll get us in position!â Andy couldnât help but chuckle as he heard Jackie start ordering Kalai about. Andy went back into the cabin and looked in the closet/bathroom to see if there was anything hanging up that he could give Kalai. There was only the one rain slicker and a few of Andyâs old sweaters from when he was a lot smaller. Well, looks like Iâll just be cold today. He quickly stripped out of his sweatshirt and grabbed the slicker before throwing a switch on the main control. Dr. Heâosforos and Mrs. Vaida threw him quizzical looks as he went back outside wearing less than when he came in. He was down to a sleeveless shirt and his coveralls, and the morning breeze cut right through him and he braced his jaw to keep it from chattering.
âWeâre ready to go- Andy, why are you practically naked from the waist up?â Kalai was staring wide eyed at him as he approached her and Jackie was on the bow. Jackie had everything ready; the buoy line was strung through the horns and ready to toss out. A giant orange and blue beach ball sized float hung at the end of the line to mark the end and make it easier to pick up later.
âTrade me your coat for these. If Jackieâs putting you to work, youâll need these to keep warm.â
âIâm alright, I can-â
âIâm the Skipper of this boat, and Iâm ordering you to take off that wet coat and put these on; and Jackie?â Andy gave his cousin a long and piercing look. âGive her the elbow gloves, not the halfsies.â
The scoff and the muttered Salishian profanities meant heâd read the next prank sheâd had in mind right. She was planning on giving her the cloth gloves with only the palms and fingers coated in rubber. While perfectly fine for fishing, Andy knew they tended to get soaked through very quickly and did nothing to keep jellyfish stingers and fish slime off your hands. Kalai sputtered for a moment before she complied gratefully and she accepted the dry clothes and rain slicker.
Andy saw Jackie give him a strange look before looking back at Kalai, but he paid it no mind. He walked back to the controls on the drum and switched off the hydraulics, placing the mechanism in neutral. âSLING IT!â Andy called as he took the small jerry rigged steering wheel and threw the boat in reverse. Kalai jumped as the line started unspooling the net into the water at a rapid pace.
Andy set an âSâ bend in the quarter mile long net, zigzagging backwards until they came to the end of the line. Andy stopped the boat as Jackie tied off the other large buoy and tossed it over the side, unstringing the cork-line from the roller horns in the process. He pulled hard over and put a bit of distance from the net before shutting the engine down. The line of white and yellow corks marking the net bobbed lazily with the swells as silence settled over the water again. The waves rocked the boat gently as Andy found his sea legs again.
âAlright, Iâll get breakfast going. Jackie, Kalai? Post the watch for seals,â Andy called as he walked back into the cabin to fire up the tiny little gas stove.
Sakalbi, having found the confidence to stand at last, poked her head out of the cabin and stood on by the hatch to the fish hold. âSeals? Why would you need to watch for seals?â
Andy grit his teeth and looked over from where he was cracking open and scrambling eggs. âTheyâre the spawn of Satan and we hate their guts!â Andy bit out. Jackie came back and pulled the two shotguns and a pair of binoculars from the closet. Andy reached over to a side cabinet and pulled out a box of shells for them. Both his boss and the Doctorâs eyes got wide.
âSeals are the enemy of our blood. Were it not for the invasion, our unending war against these vermin would continue to this day!â Jackie growled as she loaded one for herself and rested the other on Andyâs seat at the helm.
The look of growing horror on Sakalbiâs face towards their facetious declarations caused Andy to chuckle a bit, before launching into an explanation. âWeâre not fans of the species because theyâll wait until a fish gets caught in the net and then theyâll steal it, costing us a fish AND ripping a big hole in our nets that we then have to take time to repair. We use the shotguns and buckshot to give them a nice welt and convince them not to hang around, because theyâll wait up on the surface and watch the buoys, just like us. A single seal can and will take between five and ten fish. The worst is when they start getting full, theyâll just bite out the bellies of a salmon in the net. We canât really do anything with that fish once itâs âseal-bitâ. So yes, as fishermen, we hate them.â
âLearned opportunism in apex predators as a response to human activity⊠I think Iâll go see this behavior for myself!â Sakalbi practically rushed out the door towards the bow where Jackie was sitting on the roller horns explaining to Kalai how to spot the bastards, leaving Andy alone in the cabin with the Doctor while he cooked breakfast for them all.
Dr. Heâosforos sat down heavily in the booth and pulled out his omnipad. âIâve had a word with my friend in the Interior. Sheâs pulled the warrant for your brother, and Iâve withdrawn the charges I filed.â
Andy froze and turned around slowly. The only sound was the sizzle and pop of the eggs and chorizo that heâd added to them in the skillet. âYou mean⊠itâs done? He can come home?â A wave of light headed euphoria swept over Andy and he swayed with the gentle rocking of the boat. âI will pay you back, Doc-â
The doctor held up his hand and stopped Andy. âWeâll call it even, but thereâs something⊠I was able to get my hands on this,â Andy watched as the doctor swiped something towards his omnipad and it dinged. âWhat is it if I may-â
âAre you really asking an Indian to tell you a story? Because itâs going to be a long one if you are.â âIâm Sevastutavan, young man; we invented long stories.â
Andy froze and stared at the screen of his omnipad. The Vatikre was heavily accented, and Andy had a bit of trouble with the unfamiliar accent, but centered in the frame in a hospital room, sitting in a wheelchair, was a Salishian boy. Andy blinked in surprise as he stared at the screen. âIs that-â
âI am Ikwâisâhiâehlah, and this bearer is⊠of the Orca Clan Sheloksets. I drove our Haida enemies onto the rocks and took many heads when they attacked our winter village on Orcas Island. I signed the Treaty with the Great White Father and I fought against the slavers of the south-â
Andy wanted to grab the omnipad but the smell of overcooking eggs brought his attention back to breakfast and Andy stirred and scrapped the food quickly, trying to save it.
âI asked her for any materials she could give me on your brother. Pictures, recordings, anything. This is what she gave me. It's the last known recording of your brother during an interrogation conducted by a Navy Commissar prior to his escape. It seems he made friends with a Pod of Deaths Head Commandos. Quite a bit of the recording has been redacted, but⊠there are portions of it where he talks about his family and his history. I thought you might like to have it.â
Andy hurriedly pulled out paper plates and a slice of bread for everyone and scooped a heaping portion of the chorizo eggs onto them. He handed the doctor his before leaning out the cabin door. âSlopâs on, come and get it!â
Andy sat down after moving the shotgun out of the way and started the video over again as the three women came back to grab their plates and lost himself watching his brother start telling his story.
âWhatâs that?â Andy heard Kalai ask over his shoulder, and he paused the video.
âThatâs my brother! Thatâs Kay Tee!â
âHoly shit, what?â Jackie nearly shoved Kalai into Andy as she jammed her bread slice down her gullet and crowded in to see the screen.
Andy started the video over a second time and they watched in silence. âGod, that brings back memories. Back when mom was still alive and before we broke up the warband. I canât believe that slippery little punk ghosted a pod of Commandos for two fucking years! Holy shit, thatâs badass!â
Before Andy could say anything, Sakalbi started coughing and brought the binoculars up. âUh, Andy? Jackie? What do we do about sharks?â
Jackie looked at Andy in confusion. âSharks? Thereâs nothing but Dogs around here.â
âWell those are shark fins and theyâre charging the net!â Sakalbi pointed and Andy looked up to see dorsal fins charging the center of the net.
Andy looked at Jackie and spoke the same words in tandem, âOh shit!â

Background
Took up running at an early age, running throughout middle school. My father was very big (and still is) into marathons when I was this age. Together between the ages of 12 and 17 we ran ~15 different races together where I would run the half marathons and he would do the fulls. PB was 1:15:xx ran on two separate occasion at age 17. High school PBs were decent (2:01 - 800; 4:29 - 1600; 9:49 - 3200; 16:20 5k). Ran one year in college. Throughout my high school and into college careers I struggled with a pretty serious eating disorder requiring hospitalization 3 separate times, the worst/last being during my freshman year (2017). I needed to drop out to seek treatment and never ran again competitively. I had a love-hate relationship with running due to my issues with eating, but I truly did love the sport at heart. It brought me an incredibly deep relationship with my father, taught me incredible life lessons that carried over into all aspects of my life, helped me build lasting friendships, and brought me overwhelming joy most of the time. Once I recovered fully from the eating disorder (late 2020), I never thought running would be a part of my life it again, both due to the physical effects of the disorder and some lingering mental struggles. When it was healthy, in early 2021 I got the itch again and decided to lace the shoes back up. The first mile I ran was over 11 minutes if I remember, and that was all I could run. Slowly, however, I was able to make running a routine again and I ran 4 marathons in 2021, the first with my father 4:30+ time, and the next three in 3:12, 3:07, and 3:15. Throughout this time, I struggled with binging. Eventually, my desire to run fast again and some other desires led me to seriously train again. In 2022, due to starting working full time night shift, it was hard to keep a consistent training schedule, but I ran on average 30-40 miles a week. I helped a buddy train for his first marathon and we ran it in 3:50 (would have been 3:30 if he hadnât collapsed 200m from the finish line). In late 2022/early 2023, I completed a very unstructured marathon training block in hopes of running Bayshore. I was out of commission almost all of January/February/early March but averaged 50-60 miles in April/May. Workouts/times hit were: 18 @ 6:50, 14 @ 6:38; 12 @ 6:31.
Race
Out and back course. Incredibly perfect weather in all aspects, 47 degrees at start 55 at finish. Flat with a few rolling hills. Ran along the shoreline of Lake Michigan with a breeze off the lake at 5-10 we ran into on the way out and had at our backs coming back. Sunny but most of the course had ample shade. Great spectator vibes and organization; aid stations at least every 2 miles with gu and Gatorade at every one after mile 4.
Went out with the plan of sticking with 6:55-7:10 for first 5-10 miles. Every half/marathon Iâve ran has had sometime of positive slip disaster along the way. Got caught up in some early congestion miles 1-2 but eventually caught up with the three hour pace group. Never usually run with the groups, but thought what the heck. We ended up clipping off 6:48s for the next 8 miles (now at mile 10). Felt easy, light, still very solid. Ended up taking guâs every 4 miles from mile 4 on and alternated Gatorade/water at aid stations. Nutrition has always been an issue for me (especially in my eating disordered days where I would run halfâs with 0 nutrition during and very poor before/after hours).
Moved up the the front of the group and even 2-5 seconds ahead. Stayed there until the half mark. Still felt incredible and started to pick up the pace. Was a little nervous in doing so, but Iâll my other disaster blow ups have been when I push the pace 6-8 miles in and by 15-30 seconds per mile. Started to push 5-10 seconds and held there for a couple. Ran with some smaller packs of 5-10 runners, but they all ended up fading at some point. By mile 18, I upped the pace again and still knew I had a lot left. Breeze was at the back, sun out of the eyes, great spectator part of the course, and mostly downhill. Held it in the 6:20s until mile 23.
Hit a mini wall, but never dropped too much, legs just got heavier and heavier but still smooth. Came through the half at 108 place and finished in 63rdâŠmost of the passing came these last three miles. Last mile was a little brutal with legs trying to lock up but was able to sprint-jog once the finish line came into view. I knew Iâd be under 2:56 from my in-race/tired brain calculations and was thrilled to see 2:53 on the clock. Had my amazing girlfriend cheering me on to 2:53:21, a 14 minute PR, BQ qualifying time, and having run one of the strategically best races of my life.
Reflection
Truly did not think I was capable of this time, or even sub 3 with my lackluster training. A lot of things aligned and went right though. Nutrition felt on point, couldnât have asked for better weather, course was exactly 26.2, and I wasnât over ambitious the first half but pushed when I knew I could. It was a very emotional race and finish for me, coming back from my forced hiatus before which I never knew if I would run/race again. It felt amazing to run fully fueled and to run for fun & myself instead of obligation and others as often happened in HS/college.
Not sure whether I will actually run Boston, but having the time and BQâing feels amazing. Both my father and grandfatherâs PRâs are in 2:53:xx range. Incredibly grateful for the support of my family, girlfriend, and community. I believe their support and prayers made a lot of difference today as well.

2023.05.28 01:08 Ok-Minute8875 How do I make my best of what I have at umich dearborn
Hi everyone I am an upcoming freshman to umich Dearborn. To be honest Iâm not that excited for it. I just put all my eggs and energy in one basket over four years of high school to be accepted into u of m Ann Arbor and Ross. So after getting rejected I feel super lost. But I did get a guaranteed transfer for sophomore year if I get a 3.2 gpa at UM-Dearborn. I wanted Ann Arbor because if it mass opportunities (m bridge,UROP,ect). Do yâall have any ideas of what programs I should keep my eye out for itâs kinda difficult starting back up from square one again.
About me:
Major:Finance
Minor:compsci
Main goals:
âąGet work experience(internships and programs
âąabroad
âą Transferring to Ross. And before everyone says thatâs impossible to do. Iâm aware however not that discouraged because Iâve been accepted into Ross programs before: MREACH,SBA. Which I think will really set me apart from other applicants.

Predators disease. Treatment facility chapter 2 Memory transcription subject: Doma, Venlil, treatment facility patient Date [standardized Sol time]: July 19th, 2135. *MAAAAAAAAAAAAC* I wake up to the sound of a blaring alarm; I open my eyes, all teary and with my vision still blurry, I notice that I am on the floor of a gray room which is illuminated by the dim light of a small grate so narrow that even a Dossur would not fit through it. "Ahhhhggg, why does my head hurt so much?" I immediately feel a shooting pain that crosses from my neck to my back. âAHHHHGGG⊠Oh right, I remember nowâ. I get up with difficulty from the ground, scratch my eyes, and look around me. I see an empty bunk bed with the most depressing colors for sheets. Great, it matches the room. And in a corner at the back of the room I see a mirror hanging on the wall, showing a Venlil all battered and disheveled, with a cast on his arm and a neck brace from such a tremendous fall that he had, basically. Like shit⊠This is one of those days that⊠ahhh no, wait, I've never had such a horrible day in my entire life. The only thing that comes close to it is when my mother passed away. I sit on one of the bunk beds and hold my head with the hand that I still have free, I feel like I'm about to cry but I try to calm down by breathing deeply; but in the end I end up turning all that sadness and frustration into anger that I release with a blow to the solid wall, hurting my good hand in the process. âOhhh fuuuck!!!!â I squeeze my good hand under my cast-covered forearm from my other hand and lie on the bed, muffled my screams of pain. âDamn fucking stars!!!! Why did I do that?!!!!!!â I continue rubbing my hand as I suddenly hear a voice from the other end of the room. "Ahhh, I see you finally woke up." I immediately get up and turn to the back of the room, pretending that I hadn't just hurt myself. I look around, but I realize that I don't see anyone. âUmmm hello, can you understand me?â I look down and see a venlil of very short stature who is chubby, with white fur and dark gray spots on his head and ears. He's carrying a blue notebook. "Um yeah " I had never seen such a short Venlil. "Well, for a moment I thought not. When they brought you here, you were just babbling nonsense, something about cakes, no⊠wait, it was something about... pancakes... I think, I'm sure they were pancakes. I think you were talking about pancakes falling into fruit, then I asked you, 'Ohh, do you like pancakes?' and suddenly you yelled Fuck you Guelar about 3 times, like that, fuck you Guelar, fuck you Guelar, fuck you Guelar, then I asked you 'who is Guelar?' and you started saying a lot of swear words that I would prefer not to mention, although to be honest I did not understand you much. "I really don't remember any of that." âSurely it must have been the sedatives from when they brought you to the cell, don't worry, it usually happens; I knew that once a friend was put so much sedative that he fell asleep for a whole week, he was so sleepy that he couldn't get up even if we hit him, we tried to hit him with a newspaper, then with a branch and then with a broom, but nothing worked, it was very strange, I say that the guards gave him extra sedatives on purpose because the week before that he had challenged them to a staring contest, the guards told him no but he didn't stop looking at them for days. He went to sleep with his eyes open, I know it sounds strange but it wasn't the first time I saw someone who slept with his eyes open, now that I remember I once had a partner who slept with his eyes open, they called him Bucket, oh the name itself is a whole story, it turns out that once⊠⊠âŠ" Oh crap, just shut up, I donât care. Suddenly, a small alarm is heard on the door, and it opens automatically by sliding to the side. "Uhhh just in time, it's time for breakfast. Come follow me, we have to line up." The little Venlil leaves the room with his notebook in hand and stands just behind a line marked on the floor in the middle of the corridor. "Come here, behind the line." He says while pointing to a line behind him. I leave the cell with my ears down towards a long and quite high corridor that seems to have a second floor of cells, in the ceiling there is a small skylight that is impossible to reach. Then I see how all the other patients are placed in their respective lines while we are all observed by multiple guards who wear a version of the exterminator suit, but without the helmet, and instead of bringing the typical flamethrowers and flares, they carry some kind of batons with 2 metal spikes and an anti-riot spray. I walk and stand in line like everyone else as I hear some screaming and groaning in the aisles. I approach the little venlil and whispering I ask him "Why are they yelling?" âSome have to be taken out by force.â "Oh Crap." "Don't worry, nothing will happen if you do what they tell you; and watch it like this, it's better to be able to go to the dining room than to be locked up like others." The venlil points to some doors that are kept closed where plates of food simply pass through slits. "And why don't they let them out?" âSome are just too troublesome to let them eat with the others.â Suddenly, some screams are heard in one of the locked cells at the end of the corridor. âI WILL NOT BE SILENCED!!!!, DID YOU LISTEN TO ME?!!!!, I KNOW THE TRUTH!!!â Then I see how one of the guards enters one of the cells and electric shocks are heard from afar. "Oh fuck!!!!" *BTTTZZZZ BTTTZZZ* The guard leaves the cell and slams the door shut. My heart races with the terror of imagining that this is what awaits me for the rest of my life. OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT. Then I see one of the guards take out a holopad and start calling roll the patients, tapping their names on the holopad. "Gak!" "Here." "Velizba!" "here." âVolgark!â "here." The guard is advancing until he reaches me and the little Venlil in front. âBaaliâŠbolidiiiâŠbaalilidiveliiâŠ. Balivenidaguiito. How the fuck do you say this name?!!â The little venlil raises his hand with the notebook, drawing the attention of the guard. "It's actually called Baalibolidilivideniigabito" "Baali what?" Another of the guards peeks out and yells from afar. "Hey newbie, just call him Baali!" Baali approaches the guard, pointing to his name on the holopad. "You see, it's really not that difficult to pronounce, you just have to notice that the name comes from some southern regions of ancient times, it is supposed to be based on the name of one of the typical cities from before the encounter with the federation, many locals used it forâŠâ âBaali will beâ The guard proceeds to cross out Baalibolidilivideniigabito's name with a pen tool on his holopad, leaving only Baali visible. "âŠokay" ( . _ .) Baali only puts on a resigned face while the guard continues passing assistance. "Doma!" "Here." "Ohhh, this must be your first day, right?" The guard brushes aside his holopad and swings that damn metal staff in my direction, irritating me greatly. "I suppose by law I have to explain the rules of the place to you." I only show an annoyed face with my ears and tail. "Meals in the dining room are in the first and third claw of the day." The damn guard continues waving the damn taser close to my face. "In the first half of the day, you will have your electroshock therapy sessions and in the second half physical and behavioral training." I swear I'm about to take that damn baton and shove it up your⊠âFor the fourth claw, you will be taken back to your cells where dinner will be distributed. By the way, today, there will be purple vegetable stew. â The guard drops the taser baton on the ground, making a lot of noise and drawing the attention of all the patients. Just as I suspected, you're an idiot. Baali happily turns to see me. âUuuhhh I love the vegetable stew, you are going to love it, Karat is totally an expert cook." The guard nervously picks up the taser, pretending nothing happened, and pulls out the holopad again to mark my attendance. "I guess Baali can show you the place." Bali stands firm, makes an obedient gesture with his tail, and responds. "Don't worry, I'll take care of it.â âYou're going to love the place, we have some armchairs where we can be, we also have some shelves with books, a patio to exercise, board games and every 3 claws we put movies that arrive at the facilities âŠâ With a gesture of agony, I tell the guard whispering from afar "No, wait, not him." The guard just turns to me for a moment as he leaves whispering back to me as well. "Hehehe, good luck." ââŠIn the end it wasn't such a bad movie, but it really didn't seem like the couple really had chemistry, most likely something was changed in the director's script, but what kind of director doesn't pay attention to the script they give him, that speaks very badly of a directorâŠâ I think it would have been better to have hit the pavement on that day. I stare at nothing, ignoring everything Baali is telling me until I notice that in one of the open cells, an old venlil is still inside, sitting as if nothing had happened. Which is very disconcerting considering the guards literally forced others out or locked them up outright; even weirder the fact that 2 guards were nearby, they clearly saw him and even one of them greeted him. This is very strange. Suddenly, I heard how the idiot guard finished passing assistance and gives the signal to allow us to go down the hall. We all walk in line while my gaze slowly leaves the old venlil's cell to end up posing in other cells that at least intrigued me. The first one is where the screams and electric shock came from. From afar, I can see a Krakotl with a fluffy and misaligned plumage having multiple spasms and almost erratic movement. âDO NOT BELIEVE THEM ANYTHING, THEY LIE TO US!!! IT'S A CONSPIRACY AND THEY KNOW IT!!!!" Suddenly, a guard bangs on the cell to try to silence the noisy Krakotl. We pass next to another cell where I only hear screams without meaning from the slit I can only see a Farsul looking up and turning around in his own cell. âNOOO SHUT UP, EVERYONE SHUT UP, STOP STOP STOP!!!!â Damn, who is he talking to? "LEAVE ME ALONE LEAVE ME ALONE leave me alone..." The poor Farsul only lets himself fall to the ground, leaning against the wall full of anguish. Damn, I knew predator diseases were something to worry about, but this is too much. A third closed cell showed how a Yotul peeked out from the slit, staring at us in silence. Well at least that guy looks a lot more decent,⊠which makes him absolutely abnormal, damn, why the hell is he locked up? That's even scarier . We continue walking until I am taken from my thoughts. "Hey, are you listening to me?" âOh sorry, I was distractedâ. Ignoring you. âWell it doesn't matter now, what I wanted to say was, Welcome to Green Cave's facility for treatment.â Some doors open and I see a large dining room full of chairs and tables, some guards and medical personnel at the doors, and a large bar where you can have a tray and order the food of the day. "Very nice, right?" No, it's horrible, I want to go home, surely my plants have already dried up. By the stars, how did I end up here? /_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_ Memory transcription subject: Terima, Venlil, Judge of the village of Green Cave Date [standardized Sol time]: July 19th, 2135. I am finishing organizing the folders of the last cases that were assigned to me today. My day will soon be over and I don't want to stay any longer. Then one of the folders falls from my desk, throwing the papers to the floor. Ahhhhggg, who cares, it's not like someone is waiting for me at home anyway. Besides, I don't think it will take me long to rearrange these papers. I take the folder and see the name of the Venlil of this case that I dealt with today for the second claw of my day. Doma, venlil, male, (24 years old) #### âŠtails Hmmm I remember this case, it was a⊠peculiar one. The Venlil had to be tied to a wheelbarrow pushed by 2 exterminators. He looked extremely dizzy probably after the sedatives. Normally the law would not allow a trial to proceed this way, but since the patient was hospitalized just after an exterminator reported a possible case of predator disease, he was given a diagnostic test; albeit not lacking in empathy, his high level of aggressiveness and violence were confirmed by the doctor and the exterminator officer. He tested positive for the diagnosis of predator diseases. Therefore the defendant was not in his mental faculties well enough to give testimony, so I was forced to continue the trial with a sedated defendant. For these cases, it is usually possible relatives or herds associated with the defendant who usually testify in favor of the defendant; But this particular one had no one, neither a family member nor a flock, and the rest of the testimonies only confirmed the story told by the exterminator: "After seeing that they ate his cupcakes, the subject entered a state of predatory rage and attacked the victim with intent to kill, thus both falling from a third floor and causing multiple damage to private property." Many times in cases like this the defendants prefer to appeal to the testimonies to avoid being subjected to the diagnosis of predator disease, and simply serve their sentence in prison. It is not that their sentence is reduced just for that, but after compliance with this, the possibility of re-entry into society is very small. Predator disease patients may only be reintegrated once the doctor on duty confirms that they have cured the patient. Otherwise, the patient will have to remain in the facilities indefinitely. And even if he is released, he will be greatly limited in his legal options by always having the possibility of relapsing. One must always be careful with these cases. One never knows if he may end up sending an innocent venlil to live among sick patients or if he ends up unleashing a predator disguised as one of us on the streets. But the medical results, along with the prosecution's statement, made me confirm my decision. It turns out that of the two venlil that fell from the building, the victim of the attack received multiple injuries and fractures to his ribs, hip, spine, and legs. She suffered very large injuries, but with medical advances, she has a chance of recovery. It will possibly take some Colas (2 years) to recover. On the other hand, the defendant, although he looked in poor condition, only had fractures in his right arm, a cervical sprain and bruises, after falling from a 3-story building. Apparently, in the medical examination, it was discovered that this venlil has a higher than average bone density, in addition to tendons and cartilage tissue more... as the doctor said... elastic. So in summary I have an extremely resistant and extremely violent venlil, with an assassination intent, without a herd and with a diagnosis of predator disease confirmed by a doctor and an exterminator. I think the best thing I can do is send him to the most secure treatment facility in the district so that this dangerous individual can't put a claw on the streets again. Society does not need a dangerous predator walking among the venlil, The best is that he stays among his kind until we can cure him of his violent nature. I finally finished collecting and organizing the case papers, and I put them in their respective cabinets. âUff, finally.â From the door of my office comes a venlil with light gray fur "Ehmnn Terima, we had a problem with today's reports. Do you think you can stay later and rectify it?" "Yes, of course." Damn stars, and a new episode of The Exterminators was coming out today. /_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/__/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ https://preview.redd.it/qtnzsuexdg2b1.png?width=1333&format=png&auto=webp&s=cad02afc7836b00e6b7a0aded7d4e171b859bdb7 https://preview.redd.it/95z21lezdg2b1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=fb6317d4328ad910e2e5f9cd7ae45f07e1db73c3 submitted by wisram to NatureofPredators [link] [comments] |

| I posted a thread last asking advice on picking up my first Surly. Had a lot of recommendations for the MS or Straggler. Thank you to all that replied. This morning I decided to drive out to a local bike shop in Ann Arbor to see what they had. They had a Straggler in my size that the bike mechanics built up from the frame. I test drove the Straggler and an Ogre. Loved the Straggler and took it home. Going to ride the shit out of it this weekend! Peace and love yâall! submitted by trephor to Surlybikefans [link] [comments] |
