5 day old chick. One leg splayed. Can anyone help me?
5 day old chick with one splayed leg. Help?
I have a bantam who was born with curled toes. Got the toes fixed on both legs and now I’ve been trying to fix the splayed leg. It’s only one leg. I have tried the bandaid, vet wrap, and now currently have a hair tie and straw on the little guy. He’s small since he’s a bantam so I’ve had some issues making everything smaller to hopefully fix his leg.
No matter what method I’ve done, he continuously holds his left leg out to the side. Can anyone please tell me exactly how to fix this? I have him separated because the other chicks were picking on him. He hobbles around to get to food and water. I just don’t want his leg to be deformed forever.

2023.05.28 12:50 Thick-Ad-4924 How fapping is ruining my life

TLDR : I just can’t stop, I resent myself for being in this situation cause there really is no one else to blame but me 🥴🔫
M24 I just graduated and been working on my first job since January. I’ve been fapping continually since I was 12.
It got really serious from 14 onwards (had internet access and a smartphone) so I’d lock my self in my room and got more and more addicted. The frequency, and duration of my fapping episodes increased while I was in highschool and even throughout college.
I’m talking 2-4 hours 5/7 days of the week. I remember multiple times where I’d spend the entire night masturbating. I’d literally see the sunrise and go to bed in the morning.
I lost my virginity in college and had some good success with women. By success I mean shallow and meaningless one night stands. I avoided a relationship cause of the lust that I felt I had to satisfy. My addiction to porn fuelled that lust to the point where I turned down relationships with quality women just cause I wanted to chase and play the field.
What’s worse is that my addiction would get in the way of my one night stands. I got very desensitised to the point where I couldn’t finish with really beautiful women. And I couldn’t stop masturbating during the week even if I knew I was going to see a really hot chick on the weekend. I mean literally couldn’t stop and just delay the gratification.
Now because of my addiction my foreskin started to have tiny little cuts from all the times I was beating my meat. The cuts would heal but I just wouldn’t stop and they started to open up again. Now I’ve got quite a lot of scar tissue on my foreskin and tends to open up even during sex cause it’s not elastic like normal skin. It even hurts when I roll my foreskin down when I’m erect.
I’m really trying to stop and this is my number one goal in life. To never masturbate or watch porn again. I’ve seen a therapist and out so much effort into it but I just can’t seem to fucking stop. Besides my therapist, dad and my ex, no one knows about my addiction. To be honest not even those people know how much I’m suffering and how I resent myself. I’m constantly faking smiles at work and with friends, meanwhile this is literally tearing my fucking soul apart. For the life of me I just can’t seem to stop. I hope opening up about it like this will help.

2023.05.28 00:25 JorbiK Upstairs

In 2017, my roommate was busted for drug paraphernalia. To make matters worse, the bust happened on the landlord’s property, so even though no charges were placed on me, I was evicted. Money was already tight, so without my roommate’s contribution to rent I would’ve had to move out anyway, but now I only had 3 days to find a place to stay.
Living in a rural area, my options were limited. There was only one other small apartment complex and their rates were twice as high. However, I did find a newly listed rental only five miles away. It looked like an old barn that had been renovated and turned into a vertical duplex. The listing said both floors were vacant, but only showed pictures of the bottom floor. It was shabby, but I had no room to complain. I called the owner, a sweet-sounding old man with a thick Southern drawl, and reserved the bottom floor. The next day, I collected the few possessions I had and drove over to the farmstead.
The old man was waiting for me at the main house. He looked like what I had imagined; dirty jeans, old boots, a big belly, and a long gray beard that matched his cotton shirt. I parked and headed over to greet him.
“Howdy,” he nodded at me as I walked over to him.
“Hello!” I answered, forcing any ounce of charisma I could muster into my tone. “I’m Melissa. Your property is beautiful!”
He extended his hand, “Eli. And thank you.” I dropped my bags to welcome his handshake. “She’s not what she used to be, but she’s home.”
He knelt to grab my bags. “Oh, you don’t need to do that. It’s not that much,” I told him, but he shook his head and picked them up anyway.
“Where you’re stayin’ is around back,” he said as he started to walk that way. “Sorry, but I don’t have a driveway over to it yet. You’re welcome to drive ‘round and park in the grass if you’d like.”
There was no way my beater could drive through the tall grass. “That’s alright, I don’t mind walking.”
The duplex was less than fifty yards away from the main house and there was a worn path through the tall grass to get there. It was vertically symmetrical with the windows in the same places for the first and second floor. The second floor window looked to not have any glass. It looked smaller than in the photos, but I was looking forward to the serenity of nighttime on a farm. He unlocked the front door and flipped the lights on. It smelled of hay, manure, and wood; something I would have to get used to. To my right, there was an old tube TV on a cabinet with a dusty recliner pointed at it. Behind that was the bathroom, and behind that was the bedroom. The kitchen was along the back wall. To my left was a ladder leading right up to a hatch in the ceiling.
“What’s that?” I asked Eli, pointing to the ladder.
“That’s the way upstairs for now. I’ll be adding a door and steps upstairs to the back of the place eventually, just haven’t gotten ‘round to it.” He dropped my bags in the center of the room. “Don’t worry, no one else is living here yet, and I don’t plan on renting the upstairs out until I’ve finished the other entrance.”
“That’s OK,” I said as I continued to look around the space. “Did you just turn this into a living space recently?”
“Oh no,” he answered. “My granddad turned this place from a barn into a house many years ago for some distant cousins. Twins, apparently. I didn’t know any of them very well, I just inherited this place a couple years ago.”
“Oh, I’m sorry for your loss,” I said, but he shook his head.
“Ah, I wasn’t very close to my folks after eighteen,” he huffed. “I wasn’t much into farming, but as I’ve gotten older, the more appealing it’s been. My parents worked tirelessly to try and keep this farm as big and profitable as my granddad did, but they struggled. Since I had made a small farm of my own, I thought when I inherited this place that I could make it work, but I’ve struggled just like they did. That’s why I’m renting out the place,” he said as he shrugged.
“I’m sure running a farm is incredibly difficult, especially by yourself.”
“Well,” he paused. He looked around the room a bit before continuing, “it wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t for something messing with my crops and killing livestock.”
“Oh.”
He looked at me, “Now I don’t mean to scare you. I’m sure it’s just a few coyotes, and the livestock are all the way past the house on the other side.”
His attempt to comfort me was appreciated, but I was starting to feel like this was a mistake. I would stay there for as long as I had to, but I’d continue looking elsewhere. I guess that was a positive of renting from this man, as there was no contract and I just paid every month. “I’m sure it’s fine,” I said, trying to match his affirmation.
“I don’t have much of any livestock anymore, just a couple cattle and a few chicks, so I don’t think it should be much issue,” he handed me the key and stepped out the front door. “If you need anything – anything – just call me or come knocking. Don’t be shy.”
“Thank you very much,” I told him as he walked back to his house. I walked around the space a bit before unpacking my bags and accustoming myself to my new home.
That evening, I sat in the recliner and browsed on my phone for other places to stay. I looked for hours, expanding the boundary further and further away, but couldn’t find anywhere I could afford. I even contemplated posting online for roommates, but after getting evicted due to the last one and the thought of living with a stranger, I would just as rather risk being eaten by the coyotes.
It had gotten late, and I could already start to smell the dew on the grass outside. When I got up to go to bed, the floor creaked loudly with every step. It sounded like the entire house groaned for every move I made. I didn’t remember the house being this noisy earlier, but perhaps the silence of the evening made it that much more noticeable. I made my way to bed, but hardly slept.

The next morning as I walked back to my car, I saw Eli carrying a shovel over to the barn. I waved to him, but he must not have seen me. He disappeared inside and I left for work.
When I returned that evening, Eli was sitting on the porch smoking. He nodded to me as I got out of my car.
“Hello,” I called over to him. I could tell he had had just as long a day as I’d had. “Long day?”
“Same as always,” he said and smiled. “Does misery love company?”
I laughed. “Indeed, it does,” I answered. I walked over to him and we talked for an hour or so about our lives, growing up, and how we got to where we are. He was sweet and genuine, listening intently and sharing his own stories. It was exactly what we needed.
“So am I the first person to stay here?” I asked.
“Actually, I had one other lady stay here before you. She was probably ‘bout your age. She didn’t stay very long, though. We had a bit of an argument early on.”
“What happened?” I asked.
“Well, she had rented out the bottom floor, but she let her sister stay on the top floor without talkin’ with me first.” He sighed. “I should’ve just let it go since I’m still not ready to rent that top floor out, but it just seemed poor manners. I brought it up to her kindly at first and she just kept denying it. But I would see them both standing at the windows together, one in the bottom and one in the top window, staring at me. I saw them several times over the course of a couple weeks doin’ that.” He sighed again. “They were odd ones.”
“That’s definitely rude,” I replied. “I don’t blame you.”
He smiled at me. “Well, it’s late. It’s ‘bout time we go to bed.” He got up and headed inside. “Goodnight,” he called out as he closed the door behind him.
“Goodnight,” I answered as I walked around the house and back to the duplex.
As I stepped inside, I noticed the loud creaking again. With each step, a squeak echoed around the house. It took me walking to the bedroom to notice that each creak under my feet sounded again right above me. I rocked back and forth to make sure I was hearing it right, and with each shift, the thud echoed upstairs. Was someone up there? I wondered.
“Hello?” I called out, but no one answered.
Was the sister still living up there? I tip-toed over to the ladder, each squeak upstairs matching my steps. No, it must just be something with how this place was constructed, I assured myself. I stared up at the hatch, contemplating taking a peek. Maybe it’s best I wait until morning. I sat in the recliner that night, staring at the ladder. I may have dozed off a time or two, but it was another night of poor sleep.

I didn’t see Eli in the morning, or I would’ve asked him to investigate the second floor for me. I went off to work but left early to check out the second floor before it got too dark. When I came back, Eli was back near the barn with a shovel, covered in dirt and sweat. I waved at him again, but he didn’t see me.
When I got to the duplex, I stepped around a few times to see if the creaks were echoing upstairs, but they weren’t anymore. I turned on my phone’s flashlight and climbed the ladder. I found the light switch and flicked it on. The second floor was identical to the first floor. Everything was exactly the same except for the missing windowpane in the front of the house, adjacent to the ladder. I crept over to the kitchen to see if there was anything to cover the window with, but all the drawers were empty. Then I noticed the bedroom door was closed. I tried to open it, but the door was locked.
“Hello?” I called out as I knocked on the bedroom door, but no response. If someone had been living on the second floor, they didn’t have any belongings. The only way out that I wouldn’t notice would be the open window, but there would be no way back in without a ladder. They might have been sneaking in and out midday while I was at work, but surely Eli would’ve seen an intruder.
I went back downstairs to find something to cover the window with. Despite how late it was, I decided to call Eli to ask him about the upstairs bedroom. I found a spare sheet under the bed as Eli picked up.
“Hello?”
“Hey Eli, it’s Melissa. I’m sorry to bother you so late, but I was checking out the second floor and noticed the bedroom door up there is locked. Is there a reason?”
He grumbled a bit to make it more obvious I had woken him up. “Huh? There’s no lock on the bedroom doors.”
I froze for a moment, then pressed one foot down. The creak echoed upstairs just like the night before. I took another step and it echoed again.
“Goodnight,” Eli said as he hung up the phone.
I froze. The only sound I could hear was the crickets outside. I dropped the sheet and sprinted towards the kitchen. The thuds and creaks I made were equally matched above. I grabbed a knife from the drawer and ran to the ladder. Again, every thump matched me in step. I climbed up and put my hand on the trapdoor, pausing for a moment to prepare myself, before bursting through.
There was no one. I rocked back and forth, listening to the creaks coming from below my feet and above my head. Then I stomped a couple of times and it echoed loudly, but it still sounded like it was coming from above. It must just be how this place is constructed, how the sound bounces around or how the frame moves, I told myself. But then I noticed the bedroom door was open. I took a couple steps towards the bedroom and peered inside: empty. Strange, but I was relieved. I guess the door opened when I was stomping around.
My phone rang. It was Eli. “Hello?” I answered.
“What are you doing?” he asked.
“I was just looking around upstairs. There were some noises and the bedroom door opened so I-” but he cut me off.
“No,” he said. “Why are you on the roof?”
“What?” I replied.
“What are you doing on the roof? Why were you stomping on it?”
I froze again. My mind raced. I stared at the open window above the ladder. “Are you in your room?” I asked. I couldn’t see the house through the window at the angle I was at, so he shouldn’t have been able to see me.
“Of course, I was in bed,” he answered.
I raised my hand and waved.
“Yes, hello!” Eli said. “I see you!”
I dropped my knife and jumped down the hatch. I grabbed my keys, got in my car, and never went back. I left the few things I had behind.

Eli called me the next day and insisted I answer him as to why I was on the roof. I tried explaining that it wasn’t me, that someone or something else lived there, but he wouldn’t listen. Before we got off the phone, he asked me why there were blood and feathers in the upstairs bedroom.
“I don’t know,” I answered, “but I don’t think you have coyotes, I don’t think the woman who lived there before me had a sister, and I don’t think your cousin had a twin.”

Hello everyone!
Just wanted to share a story I wrote and has been picked up by the good people at Cold Open Stories.
Hope you enjoy!
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
++ Do not look to us for kindness. Do not look to us for hope. We are not the kind children of this new age. We are the rocks of its foundation. ++
Rogal Dorn, Primarch of the VII
A flash of light burned in the black of space.
Is this it? thought Cassian Torr, Captain of the 117th Company, VII Legion. Has Horus come?
His twin hearts beat faster at the thought, even as the more logical parts of his mind ran through a thousand other possibilities. Yet ultimately he knew what he had seen: a ship. A ship tearing its way into real space. Into the Sol System. Into the heart of the Imperium.
He scanned the endless void, eyes scouring the debris and detritus that littered the outer regions of Terra’s system. Searching for more flashes. For more ships. For any sign that this was the first pebble in an avalanche of violence that would crash against the walls of Sol.
Yet none came.
‘Speak to me, Captain Narsus,’ he said, turning to look back at the Oath of Unity’s mortal commander. His golden-yellow armour purred with even that slight movement, the sound lost in the cacophony that was the bridge. Astartes, mortal crew, Tech Priests and servitors bustled in constant motion, the ordered and smooth running of the Gladius Frigate hidden amongst the apparent anarchy. ‘What is it we face today?’
‘A single ship, my lord,’ replied Narsus, voice heavy with exhaustion. ‘Not military class. A merchant trader; its code identifies it as the Destiny’s Daughter. I am picking up no shields or weapons signals. Their engines are practically dead. They’re simply drifting.’
Torr knew the long hours and endless days being demanded of the man were unfair, that no unaugmented human could hope to keep up such work for long. Yet it was what Dorn and the Sigillite deemed necessary. It was what victory in the name of Unity and the Imperial Truth deemed necessary.
And Torr would not have the Oath of Unity found wanting. When this madness was over, when Horus was defeated, the Imperium would be rebuilt as it should have been. As the Emperor willed it. As a bastion of truth, science, reason and hope.
What has Horus sent against us? Torr asked himself as he looked back into space. Is this some new trickery? Some new lie?
He had patrolled the edges of the Sol System for years. Ever since the Eisenstein had brought the impossible news of Horus’s betrayal to Dorn and the Imperial Fists. In the intervening years, the entirety of the system had been transformed into a fortress – patrols like his, its first and furthest line of defence.
But it was a line yet to be tested.
Nothing had reached the Sol System. Not since the Eisenstein. It was as if silence had engulfed the galaxy. Yet Torr knew this could not be true. All eighteen Legions – loyal and treacherous – could not have just gone silent. Something out there, beyond the cold of the void, had changed.
He saw this also in the Oath of Unity’s Astropath. In her whispered mutterings. In her nervous glances towards the open void.
Summons had been sent to those Legions, Expeditionary Forces and Forge Worlds known to be loyal, a tsunami of astropathic messages to sweep through the galaxy. Yet nothing came back. No ships reached them. No messages. Are we alone? Have all our brother Legions turned their backs on the dream of the Imperium? On their oaths and vows? On Terra?
Something unfamiliar wormed its way through him at the thought. Is this fear? That emotion was all but unknown, ever since he had been plucked from the ice hives of Inwit and raised to the ranks of the Legiones Astartes. And yet, he pondered, perhaps its echo still exists somewhere within.
‘Are we receiving any communication from them?’ he asked, his voice flat and hard, masking his thoughts and fears. ‘Does anything live aboard?’
‘No communications, my lord,’ answered Narsus. ‘But we are picking up life signs. Not many, but undeniably human.’
Torr nodded. ‘Very good, Captain. Make full speed to intercept. Have weapons ready to fire, but hold until commanded.’
‘Your will, my lord,’ said Narsus. He paused for a heartbeat. ‘Should I alert Lord Falkar? The Sigillite’s orders may pertain to this.’
Torr rubbed his armoured gauntlet across his closely shaven scalp, feeling the iron of his centenary mark of service riven into his thick, transhuman brow. The mark of over a century of service to the ideals of Truth and Unity. It reminded him of the campaigns he had fought. Of the brothers he had lost. Of the horrors he had seen. He shook his head. ‘No. Lord Falkar’s involvement is to be a last resort.’
He opened his Legion vox link. ‘ Sergeant Haster, prepare a boarding party.’
+++
Shadows and silence filled the Destiny’s Daughter. Torr and Breacher Squad Haster moved through her corridors in purposeful unity, methodical and thorough. Their shields overlapped to create an impenetrable wall of ceramite and iron. The golden yellow of their thick MKIII armour was bathed crimson as emergency lumens flashed endlessly throughout the seemingly deserted ship.
Torr heard a click in his helm, followed instantly by another, as he had every five minutes since the boarding operation had begun nearly an hour ago. The signals told him that Breacher Squads Solon and Carr were moving through the ship on schedule, having met no resistance or signs of life. He suspected he’d receive the same ‘all clears’ again in five minutes.
He clicked back in reply, then let out a growl of frustration. His trigger finger itched, aching to feel the kick of his bolter, to hear its roar.
He took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm, and silently chided himself for the moment of laxity. He remembered the words of his father and Primarch, Lord Dorn: Discipline. Duty. Unyielding Will. These are the measures by which every warrior is judged.
Am I bored? he asked himself. If he was being honest, he’d half hoped to find an ambush aboard the Destiny’s Daughter. To see his traitorous brothers advancing towards him, bolters roaring their madness. The colours of those Legions he had once fought beside – the regal purple of the Emperor’s Children, the sea-green of the Sons of Horus, the blood-splattered white and blue of the World Eaters – flashed through his mind and he ground his teeth. He wanted to kill.
Astartes, he reflected, were not built for such lengthy periods of inactivity. For long years of patrol and garrison. For what was now demanded of him and his brothers.
‘Is all well, Captain?’ asked Haster, the Veteran Sergeant’s gravel voice filling his helm’s private comm-link.
‘All is well, Brother-Sergeant,’ Torr replied. ‘I was distracted. Thank you for drawing my attention back to the duty at hand.’
He heard Haster’s grunt of laughter in his vox-link. ‘Some things never change, it seems. I’ve been watching your back since we were Initiates. What would you do without me?’
Torr felt the corners of his mouth tug into the beginnings of a smile as he checked their position against the ship’s schematics on his retinal display. They were not far from the centre of the ship and the cargo hold. Where, according to Captain Narsus, the only signs of life could be detected. ‘Not long now,’ he whispered to himself as the rhythmic clang of their armoured boots echoed throughout the labyrinthine corridors.
+++
Explosions ripped open the cargo hold’s blast doors, filling the hallways with smoke and fire and a storm of metal shards. Even through his helm’s environmental dampeners, Torr felt his ears ring.
Then the screams started.
‘Only fire on my command,’ he ordered as he raised his breacher shield and began to advance alongside Squad Haster. Smoke enveloped them for the briefest second, before they emerged into the cargo hold of the Destiny’s Daughter.
Torr finally saw something from beyond the Sol System, from the chaos that had engulfed the galaxy.
Ragged humanity filled the cargo hold, stretching out into the dark corners of the vast room. Men, women and children huddled together, their clothes hanging loosely from bone-thin limbs as wide, terror-stricken eyes stared back at him from faces too thin with hunger. Pleas for mercy, prayers for help, and screams of panic filled the air. Most shied away from the approaching astartes, hunching over in small groups, as if they could disappear into the gloom.
One man, braver or stupider than the rest, stepped out from the crowd. He clutched an autogun in his shaking hands, the weapon rusted almost beyond repair.
Do it.
The words rushed unbidden into Torr’s mind as he felt the increasingly familiar itch in his trigger finger. Adrenaline coursed through his veins as his eyes settled on the barrel of the gun.
Do it.
‘Begone, foul daemons!’ screamed the man, his voice breaking into a high-pitched squeak. ‘The Emperor protects!’
His final words were taken up by others amongst the crowd. It rallied them, as it echoed in the open cavern of the hold. Torr grimaced. At what those words implied. At a belief in the divine, so at odds with the enlightened ideals of the Imperium. Yet also of loyalty.
His hand shot out, too fast for a mortal’s eye to follow, and snatched the gun from the refugee’s hands with a savage twist. He felt the man resist for the briefest moment, before giving way with a pained cry.
Torr looked down at the man – on his knees, a grimace across his face, cradling one shoulder. He felt a moment’s satisfaction at the release of violence, before he crushed it with a force of will. These are citizens of the Imperium. They deserve our protection.
He dropped the gun. It clattered to the ground, the metallic ring echoing from the walls. Almost deafening in the silence of the hold.
Something behind the man flinched at the sound. A muffled cry reached Torr’s ears.
A girl, he thought as his eyes settled on the crouched figure. Perhaps four or five years old, Terran Standard. Though, he had to admit to finding estimates of age hard with such young mortals. Her hair had been crudely shorn to the scalp, but small tufts stuck out from amid the stubble. She clung tightly to the man’s back, keeping herself in his shadow, even as she stared up at him. Her eyes, wide and dark, met Torr’s. Yet she didn’t look away.
Brave, Torr thought, for a mortal. For one so young.
‘Stand down, civilians,’ he said, voice amplified by the vox in his armour. ‘You are safe now. You are in the custody of the Seventh.’
He noticed the girl wince at the sound of his voice, pressing her hands to her ears and looking down at the floor. Somewhere in the recesses of his mind, he dimly remembered the first time he had seen an astartes. The sheer size. The aura of violence. It had been overwhelming.
Torr dropped to one knee, bringing himself as close to the girl’s level as possible. He removed his helm, remembering a treatise written by Guilliman on first interactions between astartes and mortals. Such simple measures, the lord of the Thirteenth argued, lessened the shock when interacting with members of the Legions. It humanised them in the eyes of the unaugmented.
Torr almost laughed at the idea. As if I have not given up my humanity to become what they need me to be. To become a shield for their kind. To become a weapon against the horrors of this universe.
He reached forward slowly, resting his gauntleted hand on the girl’s shoulder. ‘What is your name, child?’ he asked, doing his best to keep his voice light and the hint of a smile on his lips. He knew such verbal and physical cues were important to the unenhanced.
‘Patti,’ whispered the girl, bringing her gaze up to meet his once more. ‘Is… Is Mama here? Papa said she would be, even though she couldn’t get the same ship as us.’ Sobs began to wrack the little girl’s body and she hurled herself back against her father’s body, burying her face in his thin shirt.
Torr felt the temperature drop, permafrost creeping across the floor. Radiating out from the girl. Crawling up his arm. Psyker. He pulled back and turned to meet the father’s eyes.
‘We’re from the Lastrati System,’ said the man, his voice edged with hope, yet tinged with fear. ‘When the traitors came… There was such chaos. We got separated.’
Torr shook his head.
‘Yohanna,’ continued the man, his words tumbling out too quickly. ‘Yohanna Taraf. That’s her name. I am Emil. Her husband. There must be news.’
‘No,’ said Torr, his voice now stone and brooking no argument. ‘Yours is the first ship to have reached Sol in nearly two years.’
Emil fell silent, his jaw working wordlessly. The buzz of chatter filled the air, spreading like wildfire throughout the refugees as Torr’s words reached the ears of others.
‘The first?’ Emil asked eventually as he clasped his daughter’s hands. ‘But there were so many.’
Torr stared back for a moment, seeing the tears begin to trickle from Emil’s eyes. ‘I am sorry.’
He stood and turned his back on the man, looking over the silent wall of ceramite that Breacher Squad Haster had formed behind him. His eyes met Haster’s, seeing his old friend had also removed his helmet. ‘These people are not to leave this hall.’ He paused. ‘But do not harm them. They are loyal citizens of the Imperium.’
He turned his focus back to Emil and Patti once more. They were on their knees, arms wrapped tight around each other. The halo of frost around them crept ever further across the floor with each second. Their bodies rose and fell with choked sobs, tears streaming down their faces. Torr’s transhuman senses heard Emil whisper reassurances to his daughter as he stroked her hair. He told her that her mother would be okay. That she would find a way. That the Emperor was watching them. To have faith.
Superstition. Torr looked away in anger. Primitive. Illogical. He felt sick at the irony of it. That the Legions had spent two centuries crusading across the stars, destroying such beliefs and bringing the Truth to the galaxy. But, here it was. At the very heart of the Imperium itself.
Yet it is these people that stand loyal. Unlike my brother Legions. Unlike those I fought with. Unlike those I shed blood with. The thought soured in Torr’s mind, his mask of stone slipping to anger.
He saw the faces of those he had once fought beside from the Traitor Legions in his mind. The faces of those he had called once Brothers. Sar Krael of the Sons of Horus, his olive skin in stark contrast to the once brilliant white of their old Legion. Varon of the Emperor’s Children, his porcelain features marred by the occasional faint duelling scar. Kargur of the World Eaters, his brutish features only accentuated by a myriad of criss-crossing scars and his permanently broken nose.
Torr clicked his vox-link open, drawing himself back to the present. ‘Captain Narsus, do you hear me?’
‘Yes, my lord,’ came the reply, static scratching in Torr’s ears.
‘Inform Lord Dorn and First Captain Sigismund that we have made contact with refugees from the war.’ He paused. ‘Then prepare several parties of your mortal crew to board the Destiny’s Daughter. They are to bring food and water. Medicine too.’
‘Your will, my lord,’ replied Narsus. ‘I will see to it at once.’
Torr watched Patti and Emil for a second more. Their cries were hushed and lost in the vastness of the hold, their prayers faint, yet distinct. Other refugees shuffled away from them. Away from the creeping frost and the aura of cold. Away from the girl. From the psyker.
His stomach churned at what he had to do next.
‘Captain Narsus,’ he said once more. ‘Inform the Lord Falkar and the Sigillite’s agents too.’
+++
Torr watched black figures move through the crowd. Each bore the stylised I of Malcador, the Sigillite and the Emperor’s right hand, upon their chests. A symbol that conferred upon them nigh-on unlimited power.
He watched them methodically approach each group, dataslates in hand, recording each story – and he saw the fear and confusion in each refugee’s eyes. These men were something new, something unknown. And despite being just ordinary men and women – no, Torr corrected himself, Malcador’s people would never be ordinary – they seemingly commanded greater fear than the astartes of the VII Legion.
Disquiet filled Torr at their presence. At the nature of their work.
He glanced behind to Squad Haster. Each stood immobile, a fortress of ceramite and gene-enhanced flesh in their own right. Each proudly bore the black fist of the Seventh, declaring their allegiance for all to see. The Sigillite’s people could not be more different than the Sons of Dorn. What do they portend for the Imperium?
Sensing movement in the periphery of his vision, Torr looked towards the cargo hold’s doors. His eyes settled on a lone figure in burnished gold armour, a great blade at her waist, a crimson top knot tumbling down her back.
A member of the Silent Sisterhood.
Revulsion flooded through him at the sight. His twin hearts beat faster. Adrenaline began to pump through his gene-enhanced body. His hands clenched into tight fists.
He closed his eyes and forced himself to breathe deeply. To calm himself.
Opening his eyes, he found his gaze drawn to a group of the Sigillite’s agents. They were dragging a pair of refugees towards the Sister. Emil and Patti. Torr felt anger rise hot inside his chest at the realisation.
Tears stained the father’s cheeks, a look of weary defeat written across Emil’s face. The face of a broken man. Patti screamed. Her knuckles turned white as she gripped her father’s hands, his shirt, his arms. Her legs kicked wildly, her movements more frantic as she grew closer to the Witchseeker.
Torr’s eyes met hers. They were bloodshot and puffy, a river of tears flooding from them. Help me! Please! Help me! The words – Patti’s words – screamed in his mind. He shuddered. A ripple of terror ran through him, her own fear and anguish shared for just an instant.
His eidetic memory ran through her story. He remembered the way her father had described the terror and confusion as drop pods had rained from the sky above Lastrani. He could almost picture the mad scramble amid the ruins and smoke of the space port. The feel of fingers slipping apart as Patti’s mother was dragged away by the current of the crowd. He could almost smell the stench of sweat and piss as they had huddled in the dark of the Destiny’s Daughter, as it shuddered beneath the onslaught of cannon fire.
More superstitious minds might call it a miracle, he thought, pondering the immensity of the refugee’s luck. And this is the greeting they find from the Imperium? From those supposed to protect them? To be torn from each other’s arms after all they have suffered?
Something inside Torr snapped. His fingers curled involuntarily around the grip of his sword and he felt the blade slide just a fraction from its sheath as he strode towards the diorama of misery. Refugees stumbled from his path as the heavy tread of Squad Haster following echoed in his ears. As he had known they would, even without orders. They were his Brothers.
Is this the Imperium we fight for? Is this the future of humanity? The future my brothers died for? One of secrets and shadows? One where innocent people disappear in the night?
‘What is the meaning of this?’ Torr thundered as he neared the agents.
The closest flinched before turning to face him, his eyes wide as he took an involuntary step back. Torr heard the man swear under his breath as the chemical smell of fear filled his gene-enhanced nostrils.
‘Lord captain,’ the man started, ‘my orders are-’
‘I did not ask for your orders, Chosen of Malcador,’ growled Torr. ‘They are plainly clear. I asked for your reasons.’
The click of light footsteps sounded nearby. He glanced towards the sound, seeing the Sister had turned towards them, her face a passionless mask. He felt cold, an unnatural sense of dread filling him, as her eyes settled on him. He looked away quickly, returning to the mortal before him.
‘These people,’ began the agent again, straightening his back and meeting Torr’s gaze. ‘These people are to be transferred to-’
‘Silence,’ snarled Torr. He punched a finger in the direction of Patti and Emil. ‘Their only crime is fleeing the atrocities of the Traitor Legions. This girl could be trained. Her talents could benefit the Imperium. Instead, you drag her away into the shadows. Does your master fear little girls so much?’
The agent’s eyes flared angrily for a second, before flickering to the space behind Torr. The corners of his mouth tugged into a smile.
‘Is our presence so distasteful to you, Captain Torr?’
Torr remained silent as he turned to face this new speaker. Ice-blue eyes stared back at him from a hawkish face of ghostly skin. Silence settled between the two, stretching out for long, pregnant seconds.
‘I am always astounded by your kind’s aptitude for petty behaviour, Captain,’ continued the man, turning his own gaze upon the sight of Patti’s father. ‘It could be argued that such pettiness is the cause of all this madness.’
‘Indeed, Chosen Falkar,’ replied Torr after a moment.
He studied the Sigillite’s man. Falkar was painfully thin, with the typically near-emaciated and elongated form of those born and raised in the low gravity of space. Yet, despite the sheer difference in size and bulk that the astartes carried, the man weathered Torr’s gaze as if made of stone.
An impressive feat of mental strength, conceded Torr as he repressed the now familiar itch to draw his weapon. At the mortal’s display of defiance.
Torr ground his teeth as Patti’s pleas for help, her prayers to the Emperor, moved further away. He heard the scuff of her feet dragged across the floor. He heard a body slump to the floor, Emil’s sobs joining his daughter’s cacophony. The desire to draw his sword, to hear the bark of his bolter, swelled inside, near overwhelming.
You have failed them.
‘You speak of pettiness,’ snarled Torr, ‘yet you are not the one who has fought across the length and breadth of the galaxy. You are not the one who has seen his Brothers die. You are not the one who has sacrificed their very humanity. All this, I have done with the ideals of Unity and Truth in my hearts.’
Torr gestured across the hall, pointing at each of the Sigillite’s agents with a sharp jab of a finger.
‘You and your kind threaten those ideals. You sink this war into shadows and secrets. You are a poison that stains the Imperium.’ Torr spat. ‘What was the purpose of those sacrifices – my brothers’ sacrifices – if we throw our ideals away? We must hold ourselves to a higher standard.’
Falkar met the astartes’ tirade with a surprising calmness, his ice-blue eyes almost blazing in the gloom of the ship’s hold as they met Torr’s stare. ‘And what, lord captain,’ he replied, ‘would be the purpose of those sacrifices should we lose this war?’ Falkar let the question sit for a second. ‘We are a new weapon, Captain – or a new poison, as you say – because this is a new war.’
Silence hung for an eternity between the two of them. Eventually the mortal turned to look across the mass of humanity that filled the room. He took a deep breath and clasped his hands behind his back.
‘Our enemy is insidious, Lord Captain. They will not just come for us with bolter and chainsword. They will not just come to tear down our walls. They will come to tear down our very purpose. They will come to destroy everything we believe in. They will come from the shadows and dark. We are the shield against these threats. That is why the Sigillite created our order.’
‘Then you have already failed,’ Torr said after a moment. ‘You cannot defend the ideals of Truth and Unity with lies and deceit.’
Falkar shook his head and pulled out a dataslate, fingers flicking through its contents. When he’d finished, he looked up and met Torr’s eyes once more.
There is something different in him now, noticed the astartes. The hard edge is gone. There is sadness there. An exhaustion of the soul.
‘Then I am sorry, Lord Torr,’ started Falkar. ‘For what I must ask of you now.’
He held out the dataslate. Runes of the highest authority flashed across its surface. Torr read the orders, even as his stomach tightened. As his trigger finger itched once more. As the desire to rip his sword free filled him.
‘No.’ He growled the word through clenched teeth.
‘No?’
Falkar’s eyes momentarily flashed in surprise. Just for an instant, but Torr saw it. He did not expect resistance, he realised. Not from a Son of the Seventh. They think us cold. Made of stone. They do not understand the fire that burns within. The drive. The Purpose. The ideals.
‘No,’ Torr growled once more.
‘There is no refusal here, Captain Torr,’ replied Falkar, his voice now clipped with an icy steel. ‘These orders come from the Sigillite himself. And co-signed by your father. Would you deny Lord Dorn’s command?’
Torr froze. Co-signed by your father. The words haunted him. To see Lord Dorn and the Seventh dragged down into the mire of shadows. That was what they meant.
Would you deny Lord Dorn’s command? The words flittered through his head as he thought of what was being asked of him. Of how they had treated those fleeing for safety.
What kind of monsters have we become? he asked himself.
He thought of Patti and her father’s story. He thought of all he had heard from the refugees. He ran through every detail. He knew, as sure as if he was there himself, what happened in the Lastrati System. He knew what happened when the Sixteenth had come.
Anger swelled inside by what his erstwhile cousins had done. By what the once proud scions of Horus had become. Disgust filled him at the thought of those warriors he was once proud to have served alongside. By how far they had fallen.
What kind of monsters have they become?
He looked down at the dataslate again. He read the words again.
+ Immediate transfer of all non-psykers to the internment prisons of Titan for processing and interrogation. +
‘Why?’
Falkar breathed deeply and nodded, a look of relief washing across his face. ‘Because of what they have seen. Because of what they know. Because their tales of daemons and gods and monsters cannot be allowed to spread throughout Terra’s defenders. Because these stories, and those that would spread them, are a weapon for our enemy. As sure as any bolter.’
Falkar fell silent and looked back across the refugees. Torr turned with him a second later.
Is this the future you fought for? The question whispered in the back of Torr’s mind. Is this the Imperium you would be a part of? But what is the alternative?
He thought of the defenders of Terra. Of the fear he has seen in their eyes already. He thought of what he had heard today, of the tales of gods and daemons, and what it would do to their fear. He knew Falkar’s words to be true.
Images of Terra burning filled his mind. Of its walls cast down. Of his brothers broken. Of its citizens slaughtered. Of its ideals ground into dust.
Will you do what is necessary to prevent that future?
With that question echoing through his thoughts, Torr clicked open his Legion-coded vox channels.
‘Squad Haster, make ready.’
He heard the thud of ceramite boots on the floor as they moved to attention beside him. He heard the click of boltguns loading. He smelled the tang of fear in the air.
He glanced sideways towards Haster. His old friend’s face was a grim mask, unreadable save a fury blazing in his eyes. A fury at me? pondered Torr. Or at what we must do? What have we become?
But Torr knew such anger was irrelevant. He knew what must be done. What duty demanded. He looked back across the refugees arrayed before him.
‘Citizens of the Imperium,’ he said, his gene-enhanced voice carrying easily throughout the hanger. ‘You will accompany us back to the Oath of Unity. There you will be processed and sent for internment on Titan. These are the orders of Lord Dorn and Malcador the Sigillite. Do not resist.’
Anger filled the air almost immediately after his pronouncement. Questions and shouts spread like wildfire through the crowd as something snapped in their collective minds. The sight of the astartes warriors before them, once a promise of salvation and deliverance, now the face of repression and danger.
One woman stepped out from the crowd. Her face, painfully thin from malnutrition, was a contorted mask of rage. She held a broken piece of piping tight in two hands.
‘Why are you doing this?’ she screamed. ‘What crime have we committed? You should be protecting us! Helping us!’
‘Stand down, citizen,’ commanded Torr. The fury in the woman’s voice was a spark to his own base instincts. He fought to keep his voice calm. He fought to stop his hands from reaching for the bolt pistol at his belt.
‘You are monsters!’ screamed the woman. ‘You oppress us! For what crime? Have we not suffered enough?’
‘Stand down,’ said Torr once more. A warm heat began to spread through his muscles as they loosened. He felt his hearts thump faster. His trigger finger itched once more. He found he had drawn his bolt pistol.
Her cry was taken up by the rest of the crowd. They pressed forward, towards Torr and the other Imperial Fists. Torr made to step in front of Falkar, but noticed the Sigillite’s agent had disappeared.
A howl of pain split the air. One of the black armoured figures tumbled from the horde of refugees, kicked to the ground. Their throat had been slit. Their face was a mass of bruising radiating out from caved-in eye sockets. Blood wept from stab wounds across their body. Torr’s eyes settled on their empty holster.
A gunshot rang out. Torr felt its force against his pauldron. Heard it ricochet against the dull steel of the cargo hold’s roof.
He raised his pistol. Squad Haster appeared in his periphery, shields locked together, bolters ready. There was no need to open the vox channel this time. Not with his brothers so close.
‘Fire.’
+++
Dead bodies littered the cargo hold. It was an abattoir. Blood coated the floor and splattered the walls. Bodies – of men, women and children – lay at unnatural angles, their limbs torn like petals from a flower by the explosive power of bolt rounds. The stench of shit and piss and gunsmoke filled his nostrils.
Accusing eyes stared back at him. Over six hundred dead. He had made the count himself. His eyes met the dead gaze of Patti’s father.
Why? they asked. In Torr’s own voice. It is the question he asked Falkar. Now it is the question he asks himself.
Torr opened his eyes, bringing his mind back from the slaughter in the cargo hold of the Destiny’s Daughter. Agony shot through his arm. He bit down, grinding his teeth and tasting the iron tang of his own blood as he shut out the effects of the Pain Glove.
Discipline and unyielding will, he reminded himself, but the question remained. It echoed through his mind.
Why?
But Torr knew the answer.
Because you are a weapon. A monster.
Because it is what you need to be. Because it is your purpose to be the rock upon which the Imperium can be built. To find victory, so that those that come after you can build a better world.
Torr knew this in his hearts. He had heard his father speak on it. He remembered giving his oath aboard the Phalanx. He remembered kneeling before his Lord Dorn, hand thrust into a brazier of fire, and swearing to be the weapon that the Imperium needed. To never give in. To find victory. No matter the cost.
No matter the cost.
He thought once more of the refugees. He thought of Patti and her father, Emil. Of what they suffered at the hands of his treacherous cousins. Of the danger they posed to the Imperium’s victory. Of what they had suffered at the hands of the Imperium.
He thought of Falkar’s words. ‘And what, lord captain, would be the purpose of your sacrifices should we lose this war?’
And he vowed anew that he would not lose. That he would find victory. He vowed to do whatever was necessary. He vowed to be that monster now, so that the Imperium and its dream could live on.
For that was his duty. And duty is all.

Hello everyone!
Just wanted to share a story I wrote and has been picked up by the good people at Cold Open Stories.

Hope you enjoy!

+++
+++

‘Fire.’
+++
And he vowed anew that he would lose. That he would find victory. He vowed to do whatever was necessary. He vowed to be that monster now, so that the Imperium and its dream could live on.
For that was his duty. And duty is all.

Cena says just like at WrestleMania, he’s going to prove he’s here to stay and isn’t just a flash in the pan like Batista has show he isn’t on Raw. In John Cena’s first iconic 5 star contest, he retains his championship 5-4 with him scoring the last point within the last 10 seconds after hitting Angle with an FU. Judgment Day draws to a close with a bloody Cena holding up the WWE Championship.)

Women’s Championship:

Intercontinental Championship:

(Carlito cheats to win by spitting an apple in Shelton’s face when the referee isn’t looking before hitting him with a Backstabber his first title in WWE.)
Shawn Michaels vs Edge
(Edge says that he attacked Shawn Michaels at Backlash because in order to further establish himself after winning Money in the Bank, he wants to take out the biggest in the company to create an even more open path to gold. Michaels says that Edge is an arrogant, cocky, slimy little punk who needs taught a lesson so he challenges the Rated R Superstar to a match at Vengeance which he accepts. During this match, there’s a ref bump after Michaels accidentally hits the referee with a Sweet Chin Music after Edge moves. Michaels then manages to get Edge with the move afterwards but there’s no referee. While the referees down and Michaels tunes up the band again m, Lita appears although we don’t know why. For some reason she begs Michaels to not hit Edge, she goes on her knees and hits Michaels with a low blow! Edge then spears Michaels and the ref regains consciousness and makes the count for Edge to win this match! Edge and Lita reveal they’re together and have a sloppy kiss at the top of the ramp.)
WWE Championship:
John Cena (c) vs Christian vs Chris Jericho
(Same build up which starts on John Cena’s first night on Raw, same match and same result. John Cena retains the WWE Championship after rolling up Chris Jericho. After the match, Jericho attacks Cena from behind and turns heel.)
Hell in a Cell Match for the World Heavyweight Championship:
Batista (c) vs Triple H w/Ric Flair
(Before Batista is drafted to SmackDown, Triple H convinces him to have one final battle at Vengeance in an attempt to regain the World Heavyweight Championship. Triple H says that Batista won’t get third time lucky, especially if the match takes place inside a place he’s made a name for himself… Hell in a Cell! Batista says Triple H might think he’s smart wanting this match because he’s got experience but in the end he’ll regret it after what he does to him. Batista retains the title in the final chapter of this rivalry in a bloody encounter. Vengeance draws to a close with a bloody Batista looking like a machine holding up his World Heavyweight Championship.)
Notes:
(Shawn Michaels beats Edge in a rematch the next night on Raw to close out their feud thanks to a returning Matt Hardy!)
(Matt Hardy isn’t legitimately getting fired but he’ll be storyline fired and he gives that promo “Adam, you bastard, I’m going to make your life miserable! And Lita, you w*ore, I’m going to make your life miserable! And the WWE, can kiss my ass!”.)
(The terrorist angle with Muhammad Hassan doesn’t happen in the slightest. RIP to those who sadly lost their lives in a terrorist attack in London on July 7th, 2005.

The Great American Bash 2005 (SmackDown)

Booker T (c) w/Sharmell vs Muhammad Hassan
(Hassan never wrestles in WWE again after this match.)
WWE Tag Team Championship:
MNM (c) w/Melina (c) vs Super Crazy & Psicosis
Cruiserweight Championship:
Jamie Noble (c) vs Paul London
The Undertaker vs Christian
(After being drafted to SmackDown, Christian attacks The Undertaker and says his reason is simple. Go after the cornerstone of the brand to be noticed in order to get an opportunity for the World Heavyweight Championship consistently unlike on Raw. The Undertaker says that Christian trying to make a name for himself at his expense is something he’ll deeply regret! Christian puts up a fight but in the end, The Undertaker wins. After the match, a returning Randy Orton delivers an RKO to The Deadman!)
Rey Mysterio vs Eddie Guerrero
(After Judgment Day, a pissed off Rey Mysterio demands answers from Eddie Guerrero for betraying him. Eddie says it’s simple, he’s sick and tired of hearing that Rey is better than him because he fluked a win over him at WrestleMania and is fed up hearing people talk as if Rey was making him look better in the team when it was actually him making Rey look better. Eddie challenges Rey to a match at the Great American Bash to try and get even from WrestleMania which Rey accepts. Eddie Guerrero lies, cheats and steals his way to victory after poking Rey in the eyes when the ref isn’t looking and rolls him up with his feet on the ropes to steal the victory.)
World Heavyweight Championship:
Batista (c) vs JBL w/The Cabinet (By Disqualification)
(JBL wins a Fatal 4 way on SmackDown thanks to The Cabinet against The Undertaker, Christian & Booker T to earn this match against Batista. In the build up, JBL says he’s told everyone for a long time that he’s a Wrestling God and will further cement that truth at the Great American Bash at Batista’s expense. JBL also says just because Batista beat Triple H a few times, it doesn’t mean he’s falling for the hype and promises to leave The Great American Bash as the World Heavyweight Champion. Batista says Bradshaw is an arrogant piece of crap and is the type of person he’s always hated and loved beating up when called for. In the build up, The Cabinet using their numbers advantage give Batista a beating on the SmackDown before this event meaning The Animal isn’t 100%. During the match, there’s a ref bump and The Cabinet try to attack Batista again but Batista gets a chair and lays to waste on all of them. Batista then hits JBL with the chair which the referee sees and calls for the bell, resulting in a disqualification. Batista’s still the champion but he doesn’t care, he’s severely pissed. Batista beats the hell out of JBL, busts him open and lays him out with a Batista Bomb through a table, much to the crowd’s enjoyment. The Great American Bash draws to a close with Batista on top.)
SummerSlam 2005
Date: 21/8/05
Location: MCI Center, Washington D.C
United States Championship:
Booker T (c) w/Sharmell vs Chris Benoit
(Face vs face… for now. Chris Benoit after being drafted to SmackDown challenges Booker T to a match for the United States Championship at SummerSlam which Booker T accepts. Booker T says that he has a lot of respect for Benoit but he’ll show him no sentiment and will pin his ass in the middle of the ring. Chris Benoit wins the championship after forcing Booker T to submit to the crossface.)
Women’s Championship:
Trish Stratus (c) vs Victoria
(The final of many battles over the last 2 years between these ladies. Trish Stratus wins clean with a Chick Kick to retain the Women’s Championship.)
Matt Hardy vs Edge w/Lita (Referee Stoppage)
(Same build up as real life. Matt Hardy is pissed at Edge and Lita for having an affair and promises to make their lives miserable. Hardy gets storyline fired for saying the company can kiss his ass but is re-hired due to the fans annoying Edge to the point Edge asks Eric Bischoff to re-hire Hardy and let him face him at SummerSlam. Bischoff grants Edge his request. During the match, Hardy’s head collides with the ring post and he ends up busted wide open. Edge then throws in some cheap shots and the referee calls for the bell with Edge being declared the winner.)
Falls Count Anywhere Match:
Rey Mysterio vs Eddie Guerrero
(After winning at The Great American Bash, Eddie Guerrero says that claims Rey Mysterio was better than him have been proven to be false. Rey responds by saying they haven’t because he behaved like a coward and cheated to beat him. Rey then says now that they have one win each over one another, he proposes one more match against Eddie. Eddie accepts and says he wants it to be a match that he can destroy Rey without any consequences so offers to up the stakes and make it a Falls Count Anywhere match. Rey accepts Eddie’s challenge. In a classic final chapter, Rey Mysterio wins and he celebrates with his wife Angie, son Dominik and daughter Aliyah who are all at ringside.)
Intercontinental Championship:
Carlito (c) vs Shelton Benjamin
The Undertaker vs Randy Orton
(Randy Orton says he’s back after an injury. While injured, Orton says all he could think about was his loss to The Undertaker at WrestleMania and it makes him sick because he never killed the legend like he promised. Orton says that he wants another match against Taker at SummerSlam which The Deadman accepts because he’s pissed off at getting an RKO at the Great American Bash. Taker says Orton just like at WrestleMania will Rest in Peace at SummerSlam! The Legend Killer gets even with the Deadman when his father Cowboy Bob Orton appears and distracts The Undertaker. This allows Orton to hit Taker with a quick RKO and win. Orton gets out of dodge with his dad before The Undertaker inevitably sits up which he does and he’s pissed!)
Shawn Michaels vs Kurt Angle
(This is essentially the exact same feud that happened at WrestleMania 21 in real life but it happens here instead. Two great wrestlers in their prime fighting to see who the better man is. In the build up, they both try and one up each other, brawl whenever they cross paths, talk trash about one and other and make fun of each other. Yes, we still get the “Sexy Kurt” segment😂 Kurt Angle wins clean in a 30 minute classic after surprisingly forcing Michaels to submit to the Angle Lock!)
No Holds Barred Match for the World Heavyweight Championship:
Batista (c) vs JBL
(After The Great American Bash, JBL demands that Teddy Long give him a rematch for the World Heavyweight Championship after Batista got himself disqualified. Bradshaw says if Batista wasn’t such a coward by hitting him with a chair and brutalising him afterwards, The Wrestling God would be the World Heavyweight Champion! Teddy Long tells JBL that he has a good case to get another shot at the World Heavyweight Championship so he grants him another opportunity and the match will happen at SummerSlam. Long tells JBL that this time there will be a definitive winner so it’ll be a… No Holds Barred match! Bradshaw laughs with The Cabinet and thanks Teddy Long but Teddy has more news that he doesn’t think JBL will be smiling as much at… The Cabinet are banned from Ringside! JBL flips and isn’t happy with Teddy Long but Teddy tells him the decision is final. Batista says on the go home show before the PPV that he’s going to end this once and for all, give Bradshaw the beating he deserves and will leave his hometown still the World Heavyweight Champion. Batista retains the title in a bloody encounter after delivering a Batista Bomb onto the steel steps.)
WWE Championship:
John Cena (c) vs Chris Jericho
(After turning heel at Vengeance, Jericho says his reasons for attacking John Cena is an easy explanation. Y2J says that John Cena is just another wannabe false star who’s stealing his spotlight since being drafted to Raw and he can’t stand it. Jericho also says he’s better than Cena and challenges him to defend his title in a singles match at SummerSlam. Desperate to prove himself, John Cena accepts and tells Chris Jericho he’s going be walking in and out of SummerSlam as the WWE Champion. Cena retains after hitting Jericho with an FU as SummerSlam draws to a close.)
Note:
(Chris Jericho loses in a rematch against John Cena for the WWE Championship the next night on Raw and gets fired by Eric Bischoff in what will be his last appearance for over 2 years.)
And that’s part 39 over and done with guys! I hope you all thoroughly enjoyed. I just want to let you all know too that if any of you want to take any ideas I have for any of your rebooks if you want to join in with these projects, I’m totally fine with it and if you need any advice, just drop me a message 😁 I’ll be back very soon for part 40 where we’ll sadly lose Latino Heat, have brand warfare heading into Survivor Series and Randy Orton will enter the depths of hell for his sins. Stay tuned!

2023.05.27 16:49 picklegrabber Bird nest?

New to composting and every year a pair of robins use my front door wreath to build a bird nest. They’ll usually have two broods of chicks and then disappear until next year, leaving behind a very bird poop encrusted nest and door. I usually just toss the nest and clean off the poop but is this something I could/should be composting?
Edit: thanks for the input. My initial thought would be it’d be a good extra source of nutrition for my compost since the majority of my browns are cardboard but I think the risks are not worth it for a small amount and I’ve seen small bits of blue tarp in there in the past years now that I think about it. So I’m going to pass

2023.05.27 15:47 Tbomb2016 Is Chick-Fil-A still coming to London?

As a former resident I still have lots of friends in London and still come to visit a lot. Just wondering if there’s still plans for Chick-Fil-A to setup in London, as there hasn’t really been any updates since January. Had it in Kitchener-Waterloo once before I moved away from London, and now I crave it every now and again. It’d be a lot more convenient locally so wondering if anyone has heard anything.
Edit: Just wanted to thank the few useful answers on here. To the rest of you triggered people on here; cry more.
Edit 2: This has been answered if moderators wanna lock this so that all the disrespectful answers in here can be cleared easier.
Final Edit: I will be sure to make a post when Chick-Fil-A opens, maybe it'll be a nice closeup of the chicken sandwich I'm enjoying on opening day well a small group of noisemakers protest outside.

2023.05.27 15:44 Jgrupe I'm the New Sheriff in Hollow's End - I Need Some Help with a Case

I recently accepted a job as the new sheriff in a small town called Hollow's End, making me the only law enforcement officer within a hundred miles. As it turns out, this decision may have been a huge mistake.
Normally a job like this in a little town with a couple thousand residents would mean a pretty boring and mundane existence. I’ve worked in a few different small towns over the years and I was expecting this to be more or less the same.
At first it appeared that mundane was exactly what I would see. Besides a few speeding tickets, I didn’t run into any real trouble. There was Randy, the town drunk, who often slept in the police station's only jail cell. I picked him up on a nightly basis for starting fights or disturbing the peace, vandalizing businesses or screaming bloody murder while walking the streets. He was typically alone in that cell (which he often called his apartment) although there was room for ten or more in the big cage. Every so often he'd end up sharing it with someone who had been unfortunate enough to cross his path, and lacked the common sense to avoid him.
The town had your typical problems with shoplifting teens and the odd disputes between neighbors and spouses. But for the most part it was peaceful and quiet, and the jail cell remained empty, aside from Randy.
It seemed that most people in Hollow's End resolved their differences privately, without resorting to calling 9-1-1.
But I've come to realize something since starting as the new Sheriff in Hollow’s End. Despite the similarities to other places I've been, this town is not like other towns.
There’s something very weird about this place, and I can’t put my finger on what it is. The residents have been welcoming and friendly, don't get me wrong, but at times I feel like an absolute outsider. Like there's some secret I'm not privy to.
During town hall meetings, for instance. I’ll make suggestions or ask questions and everyone goes quiet - like they’re in on some big mystery that I don’t know about. People whisper and shoot glances in my direction, then go quiet when I look their way.
I know, this must sound paranoid to an outsider. But that’s what I feel like I am here - an outsider.
Anyways, I thought getting some other people’s perspectives might help. Maybe you can see what I'm missing here. And maybe you can help me figure out what's really going on in this place.
Today started out like any ordinary day. I was sitting at my desk in the bullpen of the police station, doing a crossword puzzle and listening to the baseball game on the radio, waiting for some action. Like I said, not much happens in Hollow’s End - but my experience told me that some people would be out raising hell on a warm day like this one. There were sure to be a few drunk and disorderly calls and maybe even a DUI or two.
Randy, the town drunk, was locked up in his cell as usual, snoring away. I’d picked him up in the wee hours of the morning and he had ranted at me for a while before passing out. It had been more than eight hours now and I was planning on waking him up soon to kick him out, starting our daily routine all over again, when the red phone rang.
There was a dispatcher who put the calls through to this phone, and if it didn’t pick up after three or four rings it flipped over to my cell phone. I nabbed it just in time before it switched over.
“Hello?” I said into the receiver. “This is the Sheriff. What’s your emergency?”
“Will you shoot that fucking rooster already!!!?” Randy screamed from his cell, so loud I couldn’t hear the person on the other end of the line. After this outburst he promptly began snoring again.
“Sorry, can you repeat that?” I asked.
“Ummm, hi,” a timid voice on the other end said. “Is this the police?”
“Yes, this is Sheriff Parsons. What’s your emergency?”
The woman sounded confused, as if she still did not realize who she was calling or why.
“Hi, yeah. Um, I’m sorry, maybe I shouldn’t have called.”
She was about to hang up and I pleaded for her to stop.
“Hey,” I said. “If it's an emergency, then you dialed the right number. What’s going on?”
The woman hesitated and sounded uncertain, but I tried to convince her to trust me.
"Listen, I might sound annoyed, but that’s just because you interrupted me in the middle of my crossword puzzle. And Randy's really getting on my last nerve. But I’m actually pretty anxious to get out of the station. I can come by and talk if you want to explain in person. Whatever it is, maybe I can help.”
“Sure,” she said finally. “I’ll give you my address.”
I hung up the phone and immediately filled a nearby bucket with cold water from the bathroom sink. It would only take a minute, and whatever the woman was calling about didn’t sound that urgent.
I really didn’t want to leave Randy alone in the police station. He was good with picking locks and who knew what sort of hell he would raise if left alone in the bullpen. He’d gotten out of that cell more than once - and I had no idea how he did it. This way was just easier.
“Wake-up time, Randy,” I said, opening the cell door, freezing-cold bucket of water in hand. “What were you saying about a rooster? Because I actually need to replace mine.”
“Ten more minutes,” he yelled angrily. Then he opened one eye and saw the familiar bucket of water in my hand and shot to his feet. “Y’know, on second thought, I’m good. I’ve learned my lesson. Can I go now?”
*
Several minutes later I pulled up in front of the house. A young, pretty, brown haired woman stood at the front door, holding it open. She held up her hand and waved at me timidly.
I walked up the driveway and stood on the front porch, introducing myself to her as kindly as I could.
“So, you’re the Sheriff. You're new to Hollow’s End as well?”
I nodded.
“Yeah, I’ve been here for just a few weeks. It’s nice. People have been very welcoming. Mostly. When did you move in?”
"Last Summer," she answered.
Her lip trembled and there were tears in her eyes as she tried to speak, but her words caught in her throat.
“Whoa, hey what’s wrong? Are you alright?”
“It’s my husband,” she said. “He didn’t come home from work last night and he isn't picking up his phone. This isn’t like him to be gone for so long without calling. I don’t understand what happened to him. I don't know if maybe they did something to him.”
“Slow down,” I said, pulling out my notepad. “What WHO did to him? Is there someone out there who has it out for your husband for some reason?”
She shook her head, clutching herself and looking past me with nervous eyes.
Her neighbors were just getting home, getting out of their car with a load of groceries in their arms.
"Hey, Cindy," the man called over to her. "Everything alright?"
“Great!” she called back, with a fake smile plastered across her face.
“Miss? What’s going on,” I asked, confused. “Do you think they might know something?”
“No. Maybe. I don’t know. Listen, the only one in town who we trusted was the old sheriff, and he’s… Well, you know. And now I don’t know who to believe. This place… We had no idea when we moved here what it was like. Did you?"
I shook my head slowly, trying to figure this woman out.
"You’ll see. Everyone who lives here finds out soon enough. For us it was the garden. We thought we knew better, but we found out quickly enough that you have to follow the rules in this town. And one of the rules is, don’t talk to outsiders. I’m sorry, but I think that’s still what you are. An outsider.”
I opened my mouth to say something but she was already retreating back inside.
“Who is the old sheriff?” I managed to get out.
The door was almost all the way closed, but then she paused and opened it up again. Just wide enough for her to say one name.
And it was the last name in the world that I would have expected.
*
Of course the one time I actually needed to find Randy he was gone. The man was constantly raising hell, and residents of Hollow’s End were always calling me to complain about him. But now that I needed to speak to him everyone was going radio-silent.
Further proof of THE CONSPIRACY, a paranoid voice in my mind said, but I inwardly silenced it.
I drove around town in my beat-up old cruiser, trying to spot Randy in one of his usual haunts.
He wasn’t sleeping in the ditch in front of the liquor store. He wasn’t in the forest in the fort he had built out of fallen tree branches. He wasn’t in the washroom at the gas station. And when I went to the playground and looked at the monkey bars there was no sign of him there either.
It was like he had completely disappeared from the face of the earth.
I was about to give up looking for the time being when I finally spotted him, walking along the shoulder of the road up ahead. The man had long, scruffy hair down to his shoulders, an untrimmed beard which was brown with dirt, and he wore a duster jacket, carrying a backpack with him at all times. His cold, blue eyes had always looked intelligent to me, and I had thought ever since I met him that he was smarter than he let on. Even if he was also completely and utterly insane.
I pulled the car over and got out, but he kept walking straight past, ignoring me.
“Randy,” I called after him. “Hey, buddy. I need to talk to you about something.”
He pretended he didn't hear me, continuing to march forwards.
“Hey man, I’m sorry about the bucket. It’s just… you’re like Houdini. I can’t leave you alone in that cell. You get out every time. And it's really hard to wake you up without it.”
He didn’t say a word. So I just kept talking.
“Fine. I get it. You have every right to be pissed off. Maybe I should just consider changing the locks. Something tells me the old sheriff might still have a copy of the key to that prison cell.”
That finally got to him.
Randy stopped walking mid-stride and turned to face me, a little grin playing at the corner of his mouth.
"I have no idea what you're referring to.”
I clicked my tongue, giving him my best attempt at a disappointed, fatherly look.
"Guess I'll just have to arrest you again and search your bag until I find those keys. Maybe I'll check a few other places too, if they're not in there."
"Arrest me for what!?" he yelled indignantly.
"For being a pain in my ass," I answered back.
Really I just needed to talk to him. I had no intention of arresting him.
I heard a noise over my shoulder and turned to look, but there was nothing there except my cop car, and the rear view mirror a little ways back, showing a reflection of us. When I looked at Randy again he was pale as a sheet, and looked like he'd seen a ghost.
He stuck out his wrists, asking me to cuff him.
“Just do it. I’d rather be in there anyways. Especially at night. It isn’t safe out here, man.”
Randy had always said these sorts of things, but now I was starting to take him a bit more seriously for some reason.
I put the cuffs on him, but just for appearances. There were a few people watching from the windows of nearby stores and houses. There were always people watching in Hollow’s End. Always that feeling of eyes on the back of your neck.
“You’re not under arrest,” I said quietly. “I just want it to look like you are. I need to talk to you.”
*
I drove us back to the station and tried to interrogate Randy along the way, but he promptly fell asleep and started snoring the moment the car began to roll. I had forgotten that was one of his quirks - Randy was a narcoleptic whose spontaneous sleeping fits were often brought on by driving. He was like an infant, soothed by the motion and lulled to sleep.
When we got back to the station I looked in the mirror and noticed he was gone.
Feeling even more confused than usual, I opened the back seat to look at the place where he had been sitting.
Randy had disappeared, leaving the handcuffs behind.
Of course there was no way out of the back of the police cruiser without the doors being opened from the outside. But that hadn't stopped Randy.
Nothing could stop Randy.
And the sonofabitch still had the spare key to the jail cell. And who knew what else he'd pilfered from the station after quitting or getting fired or whatever the hell had happened.
Annoyed, I got back into the driver's seat and decided to go out for a patrol to clear my head. Driving always helped me think. I managed to find a picture of the missing man from Nightsoil Avenue by pulling up his driver's license through the patrol car's onboard computer system. It was the one and only modern piece of technology in the ancient vehicle, and worked reasonably well.
Despite looking for several hours all throughout the town, I didn't see the man anywhere. Through some detective work, though, I managed to find out his employer's name. He had recently started working for J&M Delivery Co. - a local takeout food and liquor delivery business in Hollow's End. I resolved to go speak with the owners after a quick pit stop at the police station.
I went inside and was somewhat unsurprised to find Randy was already in his cell with the door locked, inexplicably drinking a steaming hot cup of coffee from a mug I'd never seen before, which said "#1 Sheriff" on the front of it.
While this WAS very irritating, it was also the best news I'd seen since finding out the "dad bod" was back in style.
Sitting down at my desk, I tried to think about how to approach this situation. I needed this man's help. But he was clearly insane, and also possessed some sort of Houdini-level magical prowess.
His alcoholism was another concern. He was typically blackout drunk at this hour of the day, and it was barely 5PM.
"Get talking, Sheriff," he said suddenly. "It's almost noon and I haven't had a peep all day. If you don't want me to start rantin' and raving, you better get to the point."
I let this sink in for a few moments, ignored the urge to check my wristwatch, then asked him a question I'd never asked him before.
"Why DO you drink, Randy? What exactly is it inside of you that you need to drown with booze every day? And what happens if you don't?"
"You've seen it, Sheriff,” he muttered back at me. “You've seen the broken windows on Main Street. If I don't drink, those fucking faces show up in the glass every time. They're waiting for me, if I forget to drown their voices I'll hear them screaming. And you don't want to hear the screams of monsters, Sheriff. Trust me, there ain't nothin' in the wild world more terrifying than the screams of your nightmares. Just pray you never hear 'em. But I think you will. Nah, scratch that. I know you will. And then you'll be joining me in this cell, drinking right along with me. And they'll have a new sheriff in town. Every week a new sheriff…"
He was rambling and I tried to cut him off but he was gone now. There was no way to get through to him except by doing the unthinkable.
But luckily I'd gotten pretty good at doing unthinkable things.
I went into my desk and pulled out my trusty bottle of scotch, and hated myself as I poured him a tall glass of the stuff.
*
Once Randy was good and drunk, he began to spill the beans.
And what a story it was. Completely unbelievable, of course. The drunken ravings of a lunatic. But the tale terrified me nonetheless.
"So this is why you drink? This is why you smash people's windows and run around screaming in the middle of the night, saying things are chasing you?"
He nodded.
"You really expect me to believe this?"
He nodded again.
"But if you get drunk you don't see them?"
He continued nodding as I left the bullpen to go use the toilet.
"You're an idiot," I said on my way out.
"You'll see," he said back to me. “Probably any minute.”
*
I got to the bathroom and did my business, then began to wash my hands in the sink. Scrubbing them with soap and hot water until they stung. Standing there in the quiet bathroom, all alone, I suddenly felt more scared than I had ever felt in my life.
Out of my peripheral vision I saw a dark shape in the mirrored surface of the glass in front of me. It was too close to be my reflection, too sinister and dark. It was moving on its own, and not matching me at all.
I didn’t want to look up. But I found myself doing it anyway. My heart hammering, I looked into the glass and saw a face that was not my own.
There was someone else staring back at me from the glass. Her face was inches away, looking ready to jump out at me.
It was a woman. Her skin looked like she had been poisoned. Her eyes had dark rings around them and her veins stood out prominently, inky black in color. Her flesh was sweaty porcelain, her gaze vacant, as if she didn’t notice me at first.
But then her eyes caught mine and it was like a veil had been lifted between us, and she took me in, her rotten smile growing wider and wider. Black teeth were revealed, and between them where her gums should have been there were a million spiders, crawling outwards, seeking the light, trying to get out. Trying to get at me. Skittering and crawling across her skin, moving down her arms and tracing a path toward me.
More arachnids began to pour out of her hair and out of her eyes as she held back laughter, holding up her hands to bridge the gap between worlds. Reaching out to touch the glass, it shimmered and turned to water for a second, before changing back to glass again.
Wasting no more time, I punched the mirror with my fist, shattering the glass, thankful that my hand didn’t go right through and into that other world.
The pain was exquisite, the blood dripping immediately from the wound and running down my arm, soaking it and staining my uniform with red.
Shards of broken glass could be seen embedded between my knuckles, sprinkled across my skin and driven deep into the flesh in places. Jagged bits of broken glass hung suspended in front of me, some still stuck to the wood where they had once been attached. Pieces fell into the sink, ringing against the porcelain, and I tried not to look into those bloody, shattered reflections for too long.
I felt no pain, though. My heartbeat was still a pounding drum of pure adrenaline, numbing me completely from the agony that I wouldn’t feel until later.
The only sensation coursing through me at that moment was pure fear. Terror as I began to consider how many windows, how many mirrors, and how many pieces of glass I walked past each and every day. What if every one of them suddenly contained a monster, ready to leap out at me the moment I made the mistake of looking at it?
I stumbled out from the bathroom and Randy saw my bloody hand immediately. He stood up and moved closer to me in the cage so he could examine me better.
"You saw them, didn't you?" he asked. "Yeah you did. I told you those fuckers were real. Oh, and I forgot to mention this curse is contagious, so it spreads to anyone you spend too much time with. Now, get your ass in here and have a drink with me. I promise it will help. See, I knew we were gonna be friends. Nothing says martyrdom like a five dollar bottle of scotch. We can be Joans of Arcs together!"
I was too stunned to respond. All I could think to do was follow Dr. Randy’s recommendation: Take a few drinks and try to drown out the demons.
He knew this world better than I did, after all. As much as I thought I had everything figured out, it turns out I didn't know shit about the world, and I didn’t know fuck-all about Hollow’s End.
Taking another glass from the desk, I wiped the cobwebs and dead spiders out of it (trying not to think about the mirror) and poured myself a glass of the cheap scotch and another, smaller one for Randy.
"Okay," I said, sitting down across from him in the cage. "I was wrong. Dead wrong. About everything. Now, can you please tell me what the fuck is going on in this town?"
Randy smiled and began to speak.
You can't talk to outsiders about what happens in Hollow's End, but I'm not an outsider anymore.
Love it or hate it, I'm a part of this place now.
And it's a part of me..
