Title. New to laptops and my friend is giving me his HP Elitebook 840 for college. He says the battery is about at 85% and will last 2.5 hours on a full charge. How would I go about replacing the battery to a preferably brand new one that's still at 100%?

2023.06.03 20:28 halcyonmaus WiFi Adapter on Ubuntu
Hi! Linux newb here, I've been playing around with the newest version of Ubuntu and I can't seem to find a fix for getting my wifi card working.
Laptop model: HP EliteBook 840 G8
The card seems to be recognized from running lspci vvnn:
I've manually thrown the driver from Intel into /lib/firmware. When I try to add a new connection profile the only MAC address it sees is the ethernet. I'm dual booting and have disabled Fast Startup on the Win side. Past this I'm out of my depth; any ideas to troubleshoot this?

2023.06.03 08:59 TheDictator90 Dell XPS 15 (2022) vs HP Spectre 16 (2023)
Hi,
I wanted to buy a laptop for my day-to-day use. I only use my laptops for video calls, MS Office, and watching streaming websites (Netflix/Youtube/Hulu, etc.).
I narrowed my search to two laptops:
- Dell XPS 15 -> $1,099.00
- 12th Gen Intel® Core™ i5-12500H
- Intel® Iris® Xe Graphics
- 16 GB, 2 x 8 GB, DDR5, 4800 MHz
- 5.6", FHD+ 1920 x 1200, 60Hz, Non-Touch, Anti-Glare, 500 nit, InfinityEdge
- 512 GB, M.2, PCIe NVMe, SSD
- 4.22 lbs.
- 720p at 30 fps, HD camera and Dual-array microphones
- HP Spectre x360 16 -> $1,199.99
- Intel® Core™ i7-13700H (up to 5.0 GHz, 14 cores, 20 threads)
- Intel® Iris® Xe Graphics
- 16 GB (Onbaord) RAM
- 16" diagonal, 3K+ (3072 x 1920), multitouch-enabled, IPS, Low Blue Light, 400 nit
- 512 GB PCIe® NVMe™ TLC M.2 SSD(4x4 SSD)
- 4.74 lbs.
- HP True Vision 5MP IR camera with the camera shutter, temporal noise reduction, and integrated dual array digital microphon
Which of these laptops should I go for. Here are the PROS for these laptops based on priority for me
- Dell XPS 15
- Better battery life (I am guessing that i5-12500H is less power hungry than i7-13700H)
- Extra M2 Slot, so I can add 2TB more SSD
- Light and Thin
- $100 cheaper
- HP Spectre x360 16
- Latest model
- Better Screen + 360 degree
- Better camera
- Touchscreen + Pen + IO Hub
- Better CPU
Which of these laptops should I go for?
Thanks a lot for any comments!

2023.06.01 05:37 svvagbeast [USA-NC] [H] iPhone XR 64gb, x6 iPad Air First Gen. 16gb Broken, HP Elitebook 840 G3, Samsung Galaxy Book Flex2 Alpha [W] Paypal, Local Cash
Hey everyone, have a couple things I'm looking to get rid of. Local to Charlotte, NC.
[Timestamps](
https://imgur.com/a/6Opvzej)
iPhone XR 64gb Verizon Unlocked. - $170 shipped
Good condition, screen has little to no scratches, the sides have some scuffs and scratches on it. The back was in a case the whole time but it does have a bunch of small little scuffs from the case. Battery capacity is at 79%.
x2 HP Elitebook 840 G3 - $120 each plus $10 shipping, both for $210 shipped
i7-6600U
8gb ram
128gb m.2 ssd
I installed Windows 10 but since I got these from my job I put new ssd's in so you'll need to buy a windows 10 key, Not too sure about the battery life, but they all have at least an hour for sure, didn't do much testing outside of that. Cosmetically they're all in good condition with some scratching on the outsides. One of them has a notification that comes up in the boot but it doesn't seem to affect the laptop at all. The other has a stripped screw on the back of it, but you're still able to take the back off as the plastic around the screw broke, can barely even see it and I'll include both issues in the timestamps. I'll be getting a couple more of these so let me know if you're interested in some more. Feel free to ask questions, also have the hp sliding docking stations I can bundle in for an extra 20 bucks.
x6 iPad Air First Gen 16gb, icloud/password locked/other issues. - $25 each shipped, All 6 for $110 shipped
Also got these from work, they are all in some state of icloud lock/password lock. One of them shows to connect to itunes when you charge it. A couple of them are cracked as well. They all turn on and work. All of these are sold as is
Samsung Galaxy Book Flex2 Alpha - $450 Shipped
i7-1165G7
Iris Xe graphics
16gb ram
500gb ssd
1080p touchscreen 2 in 1.
Windows 11 Home
Used this as my personal laptop for a bit over a year, great laptop, used it sparingly and did a bit of light gaming on it. Still has decent battery life and is in great condition, put a skin on the back of the screen since I've had it. Let me know if you have any questions, thanks.

2023.06.01 02:48 soloist_huaxin Possible to wake up laptop *when I plug in hub* ?
another day of fun times in USB-C land... here's what I'm hoping to achieve:
I have a HP elitebook 840 G4 laptop with 2x Thunderbolt 4 ports running Windows 10, and a cablematter USB-C "Multiport adapter" with PD passthru, HDMI, Ethernet, 2x USB-A. I plugged a Logitech unify receiver in one of USB-A to connect keyboard/mouse, and connected HDMI to monitor.
The laptop is for work, so I plug/unplug it a fair bit, if the laptop is in sleep, and I plug in the adapter, laptop doesn't wake up, but is charging - I'd hope that laptop would wake up, and get the adapter configured so I can use monitokeyboard. Instead, I have to open up the lid, which wakes up laptop, then monitor lights up, and I have to close the lid again which locks laptop so I have to re-login. Gets annoying real quick. I've checked BIOS, there's nothing related.
The main question is: Is the "Multiport adapter" even capable to wake up laptop? I think a proper Thunderbolt 4 "docking station" (like the HP ones) can do this, but the adapter may be only a USB-C Alt-Mode one, and I have no idea if it's capable...

2023.05.30 23:22 ChChChillian Enable "Open with" for .bat files
Relatively new work computer, HP EliteBook 840 G8, Win 11 Enterprise 22H2. They were kind enough to give me some elevated privs but where I don't have full admin rights and so won't be able to adjust some things.
It came with VS Code installed, which was probably because it was on my old Windows 10 machine. But I don't actually use it, my preferred editor being Notepad++ which is also installed. For some reason, right-clicking on a .bat file only allowed me to "Open with Code" and no options to choose a different app. I uninstalled VS Code, and now I don't have any alternatives for opening a .bat file at all. "Open" runs it (of course) and Edit brings it up in regular Notepad. No "open with" is available on either the Windows 11 or the legacy context menus.
On Settings->Apps->Default apps, Notepad++ does not appear in the list of apps, and .bat does not appear in the list of file types. I tried a "repair" of Notepad++, but this had no effect at all.
How can I enable the "Open with" menu for this file type?

2023.05.30 19:20 Waste_Woodpecker_888 Help! S/N problem.
| Bit of an annoying one. My HP Elitebook 840 has a broken screen and I need to order a replacement one. The issue is, I’m not sure exactly which model it is. From looking at the HP website I believe it to be either a G1, G2, G3 or G4. I was given the laptop secondhand so I really don’t know. Obviously as the screen is broken, I can’t find the serial number through the system. But the label has also worn off a bit. So what I can deduce from it is S/N: 5CG52 _ _ M5Y. I’ve attached a photo but can anyone help me figure out the serial number so I can see which model it is? submitted by Waste_Woodpecker_888 to HPLaptops [link] [comments] |

2023.05.30 10:52 theseawoof Upgrading a spare laptop for production and recording
I have an HP Elitebook 840 G5 with an 8th gen i7 vPro. It's currently got 8GB RAM and an m.2. I was planning to upgrade the m.2 and ram at the same time. Would 16GB of DDR4 be worthwhile or do I need 32gb? Not sure how hard I will be pushing VSTs like kontakt but the option would be nice if I want to get into some of it later down the road. Main use of this laptop would be recording, either single tracks or multitrack performances of my hardware baseed setup using my soundcraft USB mixer. I'd like to run some effects on the laptop like reverb, compression, saturation etc without bogging down performance since it will be live application. I feel like 16GB would do it but figured I'd consult with the masses first. VST stuff would run off the internal m.2 or an external NVMe like Samsung t7 shield or SanDisk extreme pro. What do you all think?

2023.05.30 10:24 theseawoof HP Elitebook 840 G5 - prior business laptop, practical?
Got a good deal on this laptop but just discovered that it belonged to a business and I feel kinda sketchy about it now. I plan to replace the hard drive and maybe upgrade the RAM but depending on where the previous owner got it from- can I have problems down the road if it was stolen? Do laptops have unique hardware identifying them (vPro?) even if they have a new drive installed? Probably just overthinking it. Not sure what business it belonged to as I can't get past the login screen, unable to reach previous owner etc. The guy was selling it cheap saying it didn't work as he forgot the password a while back 🤷

2023.05.29 21:20 _jpizzle_bear Switching from Windows to Fedora (bye lol), Having some issues
Hey all,
New to linux, really looking forward to becoming a part of this community and contributing once I'm more knowledgable :) However, I have been having some problems getting started, any help would be so greatly appreciated, I've ran into so many problems. Here is the issue:
Hardware: HP Elitebook 840 (G5 model I think). Pretty old laptop, but the performance from the fedora demo off the stick is already 100000x better than windows ever was. I reckon that if I boot it with linux I can get it to last significantly longer (and therefore make it deeper into grad school without buying a new device).
When I boot into linux fedora from the flash drive it only detects ~600 GiB of space to install on, but I have a 2 TB hard drive. For now I completed the installation but I still cannot find those other drives. I think that the windows partitions are still on there and are somehow keeping it from being able to utilize the space.
I have tried to find a way to factory reset the device (I'd imagine that would fix the problem), and I think I did it but still not all of the drive is available. I have saved all the files I want so it's not too late for me to do a different method of hard drive cleaning if any of you can think of anything.
Last note: I read from a forum somewhere that this error could be from the SATA operation (RAID to AHCI), but I have scoured the BIOS and cannot find anything related to this.
Thank you!
Edit: figured it out. The inxi command is useful for figuring out what hardware you have!
