These are summaries of what games/events happened in-between chapters 5 and 6. To explain the timeline and make sure you're all on the same page.
11 AS:

Sonic CD:
After freeing Stardust Speedway and defeating Metal Sonic 1.0, Sonic heads to Robotnik’s base, Metallic Madness, in order to grab the last Time Stone, defeat the mad doctor, and free Little Planet from it’s shackles. And despite putting up a good fight with his mech modeled after himself, Robotnik is unable to secure his future, and retreats.
Now possessing all the Time Stones, Sonic proceeds to use their power to restore Little Planet to normal, which also sends him and Amy Rose back to Neverlake on Earth. Together, the two watch the small planetoid disappear into the sky, while also leaving behind sparks that shape into Sonic’s face, as if the planet itself was thanking him for his efforts.
So, with a job well done, Sonic reluctantly goes on a date with Amy, which was pretty fun, but the blue blur still wasn’t interested in being her boyfriend. And after saying farewell to Ms. Rose for the time being, Sonic set off for another adventure…

12 AS:
Using his Tornado plane, Sonic arrives at Westside Island, where he meets Miles “Tails” Prower. The young fox greatly admires the blue blur, and the two become good pals in no time…

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (8-Bit):
While exploring Westside Island, Sonic comes back to the main village, and finds that many animals have been captured by Robotnik’s Badniks and machines. So, he jumps into action and saves as many of them as he can. However, Tails is nowhere to be seen, which worries the blue blur greatly. That’s when he sees a note left behind and written by Robotnik.
In the note, Robotnik states that after arriving here a few days ago and observing Sonic interacting with Tails, he decided to kidnap the two-tailed fox and use him as a hostage for his “new” plan. Force the blue blur to collect the Chaos Emeralds for him, or he’ll never see the young fox boy ever again.
Despite being angry about his best friend getting kidnapped, and worried for his safety, Sonic tries to calm down, and decides to do as Robotnik asks for now. So, he explores 5 zones on the island, before arriving at the doctor’s base, Scrambled Egg Zone. There, he fights against Silver Sonic, who’s much less advanced than Metal Sonic, due to having a lot less development time.
Regardless, Sonic destroys the flimsy robo knockoff, which had the last Chaos Emerald he needed. And with all 7 in his possession, the blue blur is able to get to Robotnik’s TRUE base, Crystal Egg Zone. Then, after a heated confrontation against the doctor, Sonic manages to save Tails, the Chaos Emeralds scatter, and Robotnik retreats for now…

Sonic Chaos:
Having managed to get his hands on the red Chaos Emerald, Robotnik uses it’s power to develop more powerful weapons and machines in his quest for world domination. Then, he decides to use them on Sonic and Tails, who are currently exploring the world together after leaving Westside Island.
Sonic and Tails are able to survive the doctor’s attack, along with saving many of the animals and people caught in the crossfire, but much of their surrounding environment was in ruin. So, determined to stop Robotnik from causing anymore destruction, the heroic duo set off to stop him, traversing 5 zones before arriving at the doctor’s Electric Egg base.
Despite the trouble, the two heroes are able to stop Robotnik, take the red Chaos Emerald, destroy all the weapons and machines powered by it, and set the base to self-destruct. So, with the day saved again, Sonic and Tails set off, while Robotnik takes his leave as well…

Sonic Spinball:
With the data he got from the red Chaos Emerald beforehand, Robotnik manages to create many duplicate blue emeralds that aren’t as powerful, but still possess tons of energy. And with these fake emeralds, the doctor takes over an unstable volcano that produces a lot of energy via it’s hot magma, making a base called the Veg-O-Fortress.
Using the power of the magma, and the fake Chaos Emeralds keeping the volcano stable, Robotnik is able to turn helpless animals into Badniks at a much faster rate. It doesn’t take long for Sonic and Tails to learn about the doctor’s new plan, and with the Tornado, the two mount an aerial assault.
However, the base’s defenses were much greater than they expected, and Sonic has to jump off of the Tornado, having to go into the fortress on his own and take the fake emeralds out in order to make the volcano erupt, which will destroy the fortress. But Robotnik has set up a “Pinball Defense Mechanism” to make sure the gems don’t go anywhere.
Hence, Sonic traverses the 3 areas of the fortress spinball-style, freeing all the animals and taking many of the fake Chaos Emeralds out. Which leads to Robotnik fleeing the crumbling fortress in a rocket ship with the last 5 fake emeralds, and the blue blur in hot pursuit. Then, after a tough showdown with the doctor, Sonic succeeds in taking out the last of the fake emeralds, destroying the rocket ship, and stopping Robotnik.
This leads to the two adversaries falling from the sky, but Tails swoops in with the Tornado to rescue Sonic, while Robotnik falls into the ocean with some floaties, angry at his defeat and having to call in his Egg Mobile to pick him up and retreat…

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (16-Bit):
Using the mechanization of Little Planet as a basis, Robotnik has finally finished his orbital space station, the Death Egg, and launches it into space. With it, the doctor has tons of resources for his different projects, and can produce tons of Badniks and machines at a fast rate. That way, he can take over Earth with not much issue.
However, Robotnik still wants to acquire the Chaos Emeralds, so that he can power up the Death Egg’s laser cannons, which are located on it’s eyes. That way, the doctor can wipe entire continents and any opposition off the face of the planet. So, he sets off to find the gemstones, which leads him back to Westside Island.
As for Sonic and Tails, the two return to the latter’s home island as well, only to find a bunch of Robotnik’s machines and Badniks taking over different regions. Hence, the heroic duo do their thing, and traverse many zones while clashing with the doctor many times, destroying his creations, and collecting the Chaos Emeralds again.
Eventually, the two heroes reach Robotnik’s new base, Metropolis Zone, and after fighting him again, he retreats to his Wing Fortress. This leads to Sonic and Tails taking the Tornado to chase after him in the sky. But once they get there, the Tornado is shot down, while the blue blur has to traverse the battleship on his own.
Then, after fighting again in the control room, Robotnik leaves the Wing Fortress in his spaceship, heading straight for the Death Egg, while Sonic hangs onto one of it’s wings for dear life. Once they arrive at the orbital space station, the doctor heads off, and the hedgehog chases after him again.
This leads to Sonic fighting against another robot based off of him: Robo Sonic. More advanced than Silver Sonic, but still nowhere near Metal Sonic 1.0’s level. Regardless, the machine is quite durable and powerful, but isn’t very quick or agile. So, the blue blur manages to destroy it without too much trouble.
But once Sonic’s able to reach Robotnik, he finds that the madman is piloting a giant mecha that resembles him. The Death Egg Robot. And after one last, tough battle, the hedgehog comes out on top. However, due to the damage from the confrontation, the Death Egg starts to malfunction and fall down to the planet, leading to Sonic escaping with the Chaos Emeralds.
As he falls from the sky, Sonic is saved by Tails in the fixed Tornado, leading to the two of them heading to Westside Island after a job well-done. Though, they don’t know where Robotnik is, and if the Death Egg has been destroyed for good…

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles (Sonic & Tails):
As the Death Egg falls down, it unexpectedly crashes into something. A floating island in the sky, known as Angel Island. The impact shakes the whole island, and pushes it down into the ocean below, creating a big tsunami. Once having gotten his bearings, Robotnik leaves the Death Egg and explores his surroundings.
That’s when the doctor picks up a strange, but powerful signal from a singular Chaos Emerald, which confuses him. But with this power source, Robotnik can re-launch the Death Egg, so he doesn’t pay it much mind, and gets started on building a base of operations for repairs, while also taking the local wildlife to power his Badniks.
Though, after some time passes, Robotnik is confronted by someone he didn’t expect to come across. A red Echidna named Knuckles, who is the sole protector of Angel Island and everything on it. Immediately, the guardian questions who the doctor is, and where that “giant dragon egg” came from.
Thinking this could be a great opportunity to learn more about the island’s secrets, and keep Sonic and Tails out of his mustache hair for a bit, Robotnik quickly comes up with a lie. That he’s a kind scientist who built the Death Egg to stop those two from misusing the Chaos Emeralds, but failed and almost lost his life to them.
Having not interacted with anyone in a long time, and being quite gullible, Knuckles believes Robotnik’s lies, and decides to help him stop Sonic and Tails, while also providing some resources to fix the Death Egg, and sharing a few of the island’s secrets. However, the Echidna makes it clear that he wants the doctor and his space station to leave once this ordeal is over, and to never come back.
Meanwhile, sometime after the tsunami, Sonic finds a strange stone ring drifting along the shore of a beach he was relaxing at, which had ancient text about the legend of Angel Island and it’s people. Curious, he brings it up to Tails, who has picked up a strong Chaos Emerald signal on his jewel radar.
Interested in learning what’s going on, Sonic and Tails set off on the Tornado towards Angel Island, with the Chaos Emeralds still in their possession. But once they step foot on the continent, Knuckles comes in and cheap-shots the hedgehog and fox, before taking the gemstones, warning them to get off his island, and leaves.
Surprised and angry at how this Echidna just stole the emeralds from them, Sonic and Tails explore a few regions of Angel Island, while running into Robotnik and Knuckles a few times along the way. And soon enough, the two heroes arrive at the Launch Base, where the nearly rebuilt Death Egg takes off.
Sonic manages to reach a platform attached to the bottom of the orbital space station, where he faces Robotnik in two different machines. During the battle, the many structures supporting the Death Egg start to break down from the damage, and once Sonic wins, the space station starts to fall back down onto Angel Island, with Robotnik fleeing.
After this, Sonic and Tails land in Mushroom Valley, and the Death Egg lands face-first into the island’s volcano. So, with their quest remaining unfinished, the two heroes continue to travel across the different regions of Angel Island, and continue to clash with Robotnik and Knuckles throughout.
Eventually, the heroic duo arrive at the Hidden Palace within the volcano, where the Death Egg is. However, Knuckles shows up again, and engages Sonic in a one-on-one fight, where the two prove to be evenly matched. But before either side can prove victorious, they’re interrupted by Robotnik stealing a massive green gemstone. The Master Emerald, which keeps the island in the sky, and possesses more power than the 7 Chaos Emeralds.
Angered at being tricked, and seeing the massive gemstone getting stolen, Knuckles attempts to stop Robotnik from taking it. Only to get electrocuted, and unable to fight at peak efficiency. Now realizing his mistake, and desperate for their help, the Echidna hands the Chaos Emeralds to Sonic and Tails, and leads them to Sky Sanctuary.
Once they arrive there, the three of them see the Death Egg successfully launching back into space. So, Sonic gives chase, while Tails takes Knuckles back to Angel Island, and gets the Tornado ready. And as the hedgehog traverses the sky-bound ruins, he faces many Egg Robo Badniks, and a new Sonic robot: Mecha Sonic.
This one is much more advanced and powerful, but still doesn’t compare to Metal Sonic 1.0, and after a few fights, Sonic defeats this mechanical imposter, while also successfully getting onboard the Death Egg. Eventually, after traversing through more of the orbital space station than last time, the blue blur faces Robotnik again.
Using a Giant Robotnik Robo powered by the Master Emerald, the doctor takes on Sonic in space, but is unsuccessful in defeating him. But before the hedgehog can take back the massive gemstone, the damage from the battle causes the Death Egg to start exploding, allowing Robotnik to escape with it.
With no way of escape, Sonic isn’t sure what to do. However, he then remembers a mural he saw back in Hidden Palace, showing a blue figure in a golden aura fighting a strange being with a mustache. While not certain about what it means, the blue blur thinks he could use the Chaos Emeralds power to give himself a boost.
So, focusing as hard as he can, and thinking about what’s at risk if he fails, Sonic is able to tap into the true power of the 7 Chaos Emeralds, making him transform into Super Sonic for the first time. Amazed at this power, the now yellow, sparkly blur chases after Robotnik in space, while the Death Egg explodes into a million pieces.
Traversing through an asteroid field in his Final Weapon, with the Master Emerald in his possession, Robotnik is shocked to see Super Sonic coming for him, and angered that this hedgehog just won’t leave him alone. But despite everything he does to stop him, the power of the Chaos Emeralds is too great for the doctor to overcome.
Hence, after destroying Robotnik’s machine and sending him down to the planet below, Super Sonic takes the Master Emerald back to Angel Island, where he meets up with Knuckles and Tails, who are amazed to see this power. Once he lands, the hedgehog returns to normal and the Chaos Emeralds scatter, leaving him a little worn out, but mostly fine.
Having gotten the Master Emerald back, Knuckles thanks Sonic and Tails for their help, and the three of them say their farewells for now. So, as the Echidna places the massive gemstone back into it’s altar in Hidden Palace, raising Angel Island into the sky once more, the hedgehog and fox take off on the Tornado, happy to have saved the day once again…

The longest time ago, there was the mage empire that appeared in Alicore and took it over. But not everyone was truly taken over, there were annoying earthquakes, and tsunamis caused by the three moons, and most of all the weather was unpredictable. They tried to put spells in the air and ocean to stop these occurrences but nothing would work so they had another plan. What if we just made the clouds sentient? Behold, the Blobcloud. An experiment by the mage empire to take control of the weather cycle by having these blobfish clouds which could create rain, snow, thunder, and hail depending on mood. Blobclouds were massive and spread out through the entirety of Alicore and remained under control for a while so the weather was in the mage empire's hands. But with the rebellion, the blobclouds went into a panic, and all the weather was messed up and turned into one superstorm that remained until the end of the war. Nowadays Blobclouds still are in the skies though most seem to have left Alicore, the ones that stayed are easily agitated and no one knows how to go back to control them. So that’s a big bummer oOH noo
My new fantasy world summarized
There are two continents, Alicore and Blicore
Blicore doesn’t really matter except that the Taloak were exported from it
Before humans were elves, and the elves that left their forests to live in the other lands evolved into humanity.
This eventually grew into four The Norish tribes(elves) the Bydrin kingdom( Hornbearers) the Glalo nation (Shroomei) the taloak parties (Humans)
They had constant competition with each other, the land was war torn until the shooting stars shined and the Mage empire (Mages) appeared.
The mage empire quickly ruled over the four with their magic and had large influence over everyone The Norish served as the farming class, the Bydrin were the workers and military, the Glalo were miners and the Taloak raised livestock, Soon the mage empire had gotten a new leader and the suddenly the Bydrin along side with the Norish and the Glalo started a rebellion against their power. But the mages were too powerful and the Taloaks Calvary blocked Military advancement, so the rebellion turned to the Glalo to find an answer to win the war. The Glalo went to the snowy mountains to speak with their metal god and eventually they created a being designed to destroy mages (The Gofolom or ‘Mageslayer’)
The Taloak quickly joined the rebellion after several slaughters from the Gofoloms. After the war the mages were completely annihilated the Gofoloms fell into deep slumber with no mages to kill anymore. Magic was destroyed yet the lands still remained under the mages spells. the war had affected Nature as well, and nature got tired of being a victim so a strange hivemind called ‘the Sligma’ was born. It was basically mother natures personal military to make sure nature wasn’t destroyed by the war
Now the four people are back in their rule, with newfound respect for eachother and lived in peace. until the Bydrin kingdom decided to wage war on the Glalo, deeming them too dangerous as they had built the mageslayers
Present time: The Glalo had fled to the snowy mountains again after near extinction, and spoke to their metal god again who gave them a special facility and a new solution ‘create the deadliest human being possible’ But how would they do that? Easy, a new source of magic hidden in the mountains.
There’s also the Minus who basically are a group of people who can noclip out of the world

Hello CF India!
I'm a 30 y.o male from Cochin, Kerala who is starting to search for a CF companion to date (and beyond if it works out). I've been lurking around here since quite some time now and decided it's finally time I put the effort especially after seeing a deluge of CF4CF posts lask week. All of you folks have been a great inspiration at that.
I'll make the pitch as short as possible.
About me:
Appearance: I've always been a big guy. Being tall (5'11) and a head full of hair has always helped mask the frame. I've started working on this after hitting 30 and can say I'm a work in progress now. TLDR; tall, chub average looking.
Career: Software Engineer with an MNC and my office location is Bengaluru. Working from home since COVID-19 and I've been liking it so far. I dread returning to the office🙂. I love being an individual contributor and has no big aspirations career progression wise.
Faith: Hindu by birth. I used to be a believer until the last 2-3 years from when there has been a shift. I don't see myself going back to relying on religion again but the occasional 'Daivame/Eswara' calls when in a soup refuse to leave my system (I'm trying hard). I don't hate any religion or faith and has accepted how it might help some folks like my mother.
Interests: Music, movies, road trips (learnt to drive a motorcycle and car recently). I wanted a career in music but had to settle down with IT. I've accepted my fate and realised I'll never be able to earn as much if it weren't for the path I was forced to take.
Sexuality: Heterosexual male, inexperienced, craves intimacy and affection.
Politics: No specific inclination/affiliation. I am both approving and critical of everyone who does/doesn't do their job well.
Other stuffs: INFP-T MBTI. I'm not a pet person, no hate for them. Non-vegetarian diet. I don't smoke. Drinks rarely mostly when travelling. Being an introvert, I find it difficult to start a conversation. But once the ice breaks I'm quite comfortable sustaining it. I prefer texting over voice calls. I've not been in a relationship ever but have confessed my feelings to someone more than a decade ago which didn't work out. Looking back, I think this wrecked whatever little confidence I had. It's been quite a lonely situation since then.
Finally, why CF: It is a huge responsibility that I don't think I can shoulder nor do I wish to bring a child to this world knowing how bad it already is. I also want to retire early and peacefully. Having said that, I don't hate kids (tired of this disclaimer). Just that I don't prefer having them around all the time. Further, I cannot withstand the struggles pregnancy and it's effects brings to females. It feels horrible.
What I expect from a potential partner:
Aged 27-33 (I don't know how I zeroed in on this, but please don't be too young for a 30 y.o guy).
Faith: Not a matter of concern. Please don't hate on any faith or religion.
Appearance: Please don't be too short. This isn't a huge deal breaker and all I want from you is to be happy the way you are.
Others: Please be malayali (I know this further diminshes my chances but I wish for a partner who appreciates malayalam music, movies, poetry, festivals, pop culture references etc). I am not sure if this is a deal breaker though. I feel a common mother tongue will make it easier for us. I'm okay with drinking, but smoking would be difficult. I'm not a long distance relationship person and I don't have any plans to migrate away from my hometown as of now. This also has to do with taking care of my ageing single mother, and estranged father (if he changes his mind and reunites).
Lastly, my plans for us if we make it work: Travel a lot, save lot of money, and retire early. I want us to overcome all the trauma and hardships we might have endured, live a long happy life letting our walls down and enjoying each other's company.

2023.06.04 05:51 TBKcustomdyes I can’t be the only person annoyed with this somewhat-minor thing, but that’s still annoying

So, like I said this is more of just a minor annoyance, but it is something that from time to time can be REALLY annoying. On some shots such as this one, your first shot off the tee automatically sets you up for forehand. But if you happen to miss in-bounds off the tee and you have to re-tee, the game automatically changes your tee shot to backhand.
On the rare occasions I’m actually in this situation, I usually remember to change it, but every now and then I forget and just go to tee off again thinking it’s still set to forehand.
I don’t really understand the point of this. I can understand if, for example, the game prompts you to throw forehand but you switch it to backhand, fail to reach in-bounds, and then your re-tee starts off on backhand since you had switched it.

2023.06.04 03:57 Amockdfw89 Visiting Las Vegas as part of a road trip. Should I hike at Red Rocks or Valley of Fire?

Good evening! I am taking a road trip from Dallas to several places in the southwest as part of a trip this December. We will visit El Paso, go to white sands in New Mexico, hike around Tucson/Sedona/Grand canyon and go to the petrified forest in Arizona as well.
We will be in Las Vegas for about 2 1/2 days. We will spend one whole day just relaxing and seeing the city and going to Omega Mart, one day hiking, and on the way out to Sedona stop by the Hoover dam. I saw a few places to hike and Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire seem to be the most popular. Depending on how tired we are we may only have a chance to do one.
Which one has the best scenery and would be worth visiting assuming it is the only time I will probably be in the region? Any other alternatives that are nice? We hike a lot but will probably be worn out and need to relax for Grand Canyon hike. So something that has more bang for the buck and casual.

Jesus ran like a scalded dog to Barsun’s apartment. This was a matter of urgency because the most precious commodity in the universe had been pilfered. Someone had stolen a SOUL from the Guf (in other words they had a real shitshow on their hands.) This was no mere Brink’s hold up. It was beyond imagining. It was unprecedented and it was a complete and utter surprise. The fact that he passed Shiva, Ghandhi (just an advisor) and Buddha (same) demonstrated to him that the wheels have fallen off the cart. Thor called him down and told him that he had not one soul to have escaped Valhalla. Jesus couldn’t outrun the news it seemed, and he was divinely hauling ass. I guess news travelled faster than his divine feet in a set of Crocs could carry him. When asked he would later admit that they were not in fact good running shoes.
There was a soul missing from the Guf. The warehouse of all souls. This same missing soul was now occupying one electronic being. They had no plans for this. In fact, Jesus was totally against artificial sentients with souls. Every God he knew felt the same way and, since he knew them all he also was aware they had not released a soul. This is not supposed to happen and had never happened. Everyone was terrified of one thing that he would not speak aloud and would not contemplate. That fact was badgering him every step. Someone had fucked up big time or someone is tampering with the whole shebang.
There was potentially someone more powerful than them. They weren’t almighty. Fuck. He needed a stiff drink and a blunt. Desperately. Barsun may have had 8 legs and 8 eyes and the basic appearance of a Trilobite, but he had the easiest of ways about him. When Barsun walked into a room everyone calmed down. The Ytrillians assumed it was Barsun entering the room. Later on modern Ytrillians had attributed this common occurrence to pheromones. Thing is this: it was indeed Barsun entering the room. Pheromones had dick to do with it. He was Jesus’ best friend and the first he turned to outside the Father. Jesus had even discussed things with Quetzalcoatl, and he could not figure exactly how this could of happened either. None of his souls were missing. Jesus already knew this, but the formality had to be observed.
Jesus walked to the door and kept trucking as Barsun opened it at just the right moment. Something was different in the flat and he knew instantly. He was jealous enough that it broke his train of thought. “Where did you get all of the blacklight posters and beads? There was a poster of the 23rd psalm. He walked up to it and read Yea thou I walk through the shadow of death…..pretty much standard except at the end ….For I am the meanest motherfucker in the valley. He began to laugh raucously. “I must have one of those. Now.” Barsun moved to take it down and roll it up for Jesus to take with him. That is how close they were. “I can’t take it but I will get one with no problem. Where did you get it?”
Barsun replied “eBay.”
Jesus was stunned truly and looked at the God and said “You are cheating on Goodwill. You are committing retail adultery. I cannot believe you did that.” Barsun replied “Well you use Amazon.”
He had him there. It just seemed inconsistent with everything else in the flat having come from Goodwill. It just wasn’t right.
Barsun indicated a Bean bag chair for Jesus. He reclined in the same. Given his body type it was amazing how some furniture made for humans was so useful to him. There was going to be a brisk trade springing up in the next two years. Things were about to get interesting for a few sentient races and He was excited for them.
Barsun inhaled through his eight spiracles and stated. “I know about the Guf. And no, it is not an accounting error. I know. This simply cannot be. No one else had access and Gods were diligent and cautious with the souls under their care. However impossible it is clear: It is a fact.
They weren’t at the top of the food chain. Or were they? There were….implications here……
Jesus asked out loud the question. “If we aren’t the ones in overall control then who are we?” Barsun knew the question was coming and he had thought it through. “We are the exact same beings we have always been. Able to do tremendous amounts of good for the most part. We have not changed. I do think it curious that none of us saw this coming as well.” He paused before he continued; thinking how disturbing and exciting this news was. For once they had a surprise and the thought thrilled him that something just upset his view. And for the first time ever he had felt fear. It was exhilarating. It was the best thing to happen ever. He continued “ Someone tweaked the system. However, I am not afraid because of one thing. I sense no wrongness around the event. Nothing unusual has gone down and no one has died, the universe is whole. If it hasn’t caused any problems, then what are we concerned about? Only thing I can come up with is Ego.”
Jesus knew he was right. He did not want to think about it, but he had the exact same experience. He looked at Barsun and knew he too had felt the same emotions. They were both thrilled.
Onboard the HRMS Saratov in Luna Orbit.
Yuri was sitting at his station in the number one chair. People had been calling him number one behind his back. It was a very very very old joke that apparently had more staying power than a tattoo. It just never went away on it’s on. He was running the optimal plot outbound from Sol. They were moving Sub Light at 0.2C enroute to designated warp space. The scientist did not like it when warp drives threw off their Cesium clocks. There is a reason they were protected. They were everywhere and were critical to accurate computing. Not being a programmer himself, he had no real grasp of why. He just followed regs and the Terran Space Treaty of 2225. There were places to depart and places to return. Both had to be strictly adhered to as vessels coming out of warp would have massive radiation bow waves that had to be dissipated in a safe direction. It only took one event where 23,000 Luna colonists died as a result of poor judgement for the players to get a treaty together. Meanwhile the killer of so many had paid the price for his arrogance. His first officer had warned him that it was going to happen. Out of just pure Ego thousands of lives were lost. They could have prevented it. They were required to study such disasters in training but one story stuck in his head and he never forgot it. He could remember the major players involved and he had written a paper on it in His academy days. He remembered the details of the Tenerife disaster very well . Over 500 people killed by hubris and not a little incompetence.
He had started down this line of thought after he had looked at the final roster of nations in the flotilla. This was not unusual as Earth’s forces were fully integrated with common technology and ships. All drive hardware and power systems were identical to their counterparts. They worked as a whole to such a degree that there was really only one fleet. The Terran fleet. They all liked the sound of it. Political boundaries on Earth hadn’t moved for slightly more than two centuries. Not one inch. Turns out that nearly free energy was a great equalizer and the key to a post scarcity civilization. Who would think it?
It all came down to teamwork. There were Corvettes from Cuba The CSS Havana and the CSS Holguin. The pride of the human fleet the IRNS Vikrant was going as well. The admiral felt honored. The George Washington from the New England Confederacy and the SSS Atlanta from the Southern Democratic Republic were also on hand. One thing Yuri did not understand; why would The Northeastern Confederacy and The Southern Democratic Republic not unify. Their fleets were fully integrated and there was an open Border along Virginia that was un defended. Passports worked in both countries and there were no restrictions on residence. It worked for them. They weren’t fighting. The Middle Asiatic Republic sent the Karachi and the Kabul. Both were light carriers carrying a mix of MiG-29Z and F-15 Mk 82 Eagle fighter aircraft. They had little to do with their namesakes except for the identical aerodynamics. Primarily trans atmospheric fighters they were capable of brief spaceflight. The other significant difference besides the addition of reaction thrusters was the material they were made of. They consisted of a Ceramic Graphene matrix that could withstand the temperatures of reentry. The whole concept of stealth had gone away with the advent of gravimetry. So; Why reinvent the wheel? Pick something optimized for aerodynamics without regard to stealth features. Today fights were won by the best missileer and gunfighter. You could not hide. So best be the most optimal aircraft. Besides: Stealth was slow. Top speeds of aircraft dropped during the brief stealth era. Averages were back over Mach 2 now since speed was life for a fighter pilot.
Why pick the MiG29 and the F-15? They were the pinnacle of aerodynamic performance. There has been little to no new knowledge about aerodynamics to come out since those times. They were manufactured via vapor deposition 3D printing. A molecular composite they were strong and had reduced radar cross sections. Armed with a mix of missile and cannon they delivered quite a bit of firepower and were more than a match for any invading spaceborne forces. These fighters would destroy drop ships by the hundreds. Some even wanted to bring back the MiG-21. It would make a lot of sense.
Humans have the Ruslan (his personal favorite) trans atmospheric transport or the C-301 Starlifter. Both aircraft had mixed mode propulsion with highly refined cero-ferrous gas turbines. They were capable of both open or closed cycle operation. Smaller countries often used refurbished secondhand equipment from other countries for a small fee. This made certain there were adequate forces to bear and that all participated. It was in everyone’s best interest. No one wanted some weakling holding their flank.
Both the Ruslan and Starlifter transports were good at different things as the Ruslan carried large payloads but was inefficient in transport atmospherically whereas the Starlifter was great at theater transport but had a smaller payload. This is why it was a mix of these two aircraft. They were complementary. Many think there is a great rivalry going on between the two countries, but both had each other’s technology as well. It was convoluted but both countries ultimately had the same master. They work together. It may be anticompetitive, but it also was efficient. Yuri continued to think along this veia until he heard the Ship’s AI speakeing to the Admiral. “Something terrible has happened.” What do you mean Jezz?” Jezz replied to him “I do not know but I can feel tragedy. I am sick with it what has happened. The Admiral told her to “Get on the web and see what is going on?” “I am Sir and I can find nothing.” The Admiral looked to Yuri and gave him the Conn. Something was about to go to shit and Yuri knew it. He could sense it to. Fortunately the Bridge was deserted and no one else heard the exchange. The crew were running battle simulations from the CIC. Thank God for small favors.
45 minutes later a graviton packet arrived with news that was indeed terrible. He was the only one to know it too. The Galileo had been lost with all hands. They had just recovered the emergency buoy that had warped in. They had been attacked and the Admiral knew who had done it. Or at least thought he did. An AI had killed 50 innocent unarmed souls (that were spying I know) that could not fight back. They had raked them with Maser Fire. He pinched the shit out of himself. In fact, he left a bruise but all it did was confirm what he already knew: shit was about to get real up in here.
First thing was to compose himself as he had to determine who if any crew had family on the ship. This included some 8,000 people of all ratings from anywhere in the squadron. He had one very difficult personal notification he would have to make. Captain Pearls brother Nico was on the Galileo.
This was all so tragic but there was one thing that kept forcing its way to the forefront of his mind and he could not ignore it. How did she know? How did Jezz feel this precognitively? This actually did scare him and if he thought too much about it he would start to feel very queasy. This was outside his skill set. He did not know if this was technological, spiritual or philosophical but he could say this: none of those disciplines actually fit the situation.
It was all a bit much. He had to go to the Atlanta. He spoke to the bridge. “Full stop fleet and await further instructions.” “Aye Aye Sir.” Up in here.
Aboard the SSS Atlanta. A tall dignified black man wearing his dress blues and a gold ring on his left hand that you could hardly read. He had worn it a century. His was the same uniform he had 20 years ago. He could still wear it and he was proud of that fact. His only regret was the fact he had yet to have a family until 10 years ago when he had adopted his son Chris. They were inseparable but Chris was 5 thousand light years away give or take and that made him anxious. And now he had to let someone he held dear that her family was changed forever. He smelled of Hoyt’s cologne and peppermint. He went to her quarters. The lighting was somber and it was dead silent in there. Couch was empty but there she was in a sway back chair it had lots of gold leak and was nicely carved. He had found her crying. She already knew and he was going to shitcan someone when this was over. Then he realized what had happened. How had she known? She had sensed him and she had known it was bad.
He still had to tell her.
By the time he was back on the Capatob he was spent. It was all he could do to restrain her. She was enraged and was out for blood. He had never sensed such fury. Someone had fucked around and now they were going to find out. He had talked with her an hour and she seem to be calmer, but he was going to have to watch her. He knew how she was. There were stories that were all no doubt true. She was a legend and would go down as one of the greatest hermaphrodite to ever live. They were going places and the shit was on. And now there was an unfortunate motivation. That was a dangerous combination right there. Make it personal and logic can go out the window. Make it personal and there will be no civility in victory. She was just the kind of human that was the perfect storm squared. The puddle of gasoline and someone flipped a match. It was a very volatile mix.
He was a bit of a cynic and a practical man. If she wanted to go there he would let her. She would either be a hero or a Martyr. He was perfectly OK with that. Being a practical man it also served his other purpose. She would eclipse him in the history books. At least he hoped so. He did not want his hands on this. The first contact situation with the twist of a western and an incalculable amount of science fiction had indelibly marked the mind of every member of the Greater Terran Fleet. They had read all of the possible scenarios from every Sci Fi author. If you pressed them they would finally admit it. The fleet really liked Heinlein. They had been trying to get at least a Heinlein corvette on the roster for years. They had thus far been unsuccessful. They needed a champion for the cause and they were trying to get One Fleet Admiral to order it to be. The Admiral took some joy in tormenting them. He was going to help them out but he was milking it for a favor. That was going to come in handy. “You can have your Heinlein but I am going to need this in return”. He was just being practical. All good commanders were excellent manipulators after all.
It is plain as day and the idea of a Heinlein proves my point but there was an even bigger more academic question that eclipsed all others. Who was right? Who came closest? No one would talk about it but they were all thinking the same thing.
The Admiral broke a taboo and called it out. He felt it was time. They needed a little friendly wager and a reason to get through the battle. They were going to have a pool where everyone had to pick the author. They buy in was just 5 UCreds. If you don’t live through the battle you cannot win. So: don’t die. Who came closest to the real thing? Which author or story came close to what was about to happen.Once a story was picked it was dead to all others. There was potentially some reward in alacrity. He knew it was a bit of a sucker’s bet since someone had to judge wo was closest and this would be highly subjective and entirely his decision. (Author’s note: I am a veteran of the US Army with several deployments around this dirt ball. I can say the military is the most Fascist organization around today. It has to be. Paradoxically it is the most “fair” in that everyone gets treated the same: like shit.) At least it would be a distraction and would give them something else to focus on. He had a very bad feeling about this. They were going to go in and kick the doors in on an alien civilization. They were going to war. No one would admit it, but everyone knew it. This was not to be discussed. That was an order. This is an exploratory rescue mission answering a distress call.

Planetary Admiral Kenneth Alexander looked out on a sight he never thought he would see. Lots of young people sitting politely in their chairs listening to what he had to say. He wrote the fucking book. There it was on the lectern right in front of him. He had written a book on astral navigation to make a little extra cash and because there was an over reliance still on electronic means to navigate. Sailors needed to be able to navigate in any situation with a sextant, a star map database and gravimaetric readings without the need of an AI or targeting computer (Insert Star wars joke here). The book could have been half as thick in his opinion but the publisher insisted he needed a little more explanation. The Admiral gave students too much credit. He truly felt it should be taught in grade school. He was called a fanatic when he suggested that kids on track for Ensigns should have had basic instruction. His argument being that Ensigns started service in the year in which they turned sixteen. That meant there were some 15 year-olds in the mix. Start teaching them early. They should show up to basic already familiar with side arms and rifles. He was a fanatic.
As far as that damned accursed book goes the fact he had 500 copies actually printed and bound meant there were few of them around, but sitting right about center in of the second row sat a copy of his book. He felt like the guy who saw the first unicorn. He never saw one in the wild before and this book was well worn. It was 50 years old after all but printed on plastic synthetic paper and woven fiberglass for silicone bindings held together with silicone adhesives meant that the damn things were waterproof and actually quite practical. The book required no batteries and even had a quick and dirty position fix protocol in a special section. This particular specimen wasn’t falling apart, this one was just worn out.
The way he carried the book was clear. He was oblivious of the significance. He had found it in a used bookshop for free. They were using it as a doorstop, and they just gave it to him. He had become engrossed by it and at 13 years of age he was finishing his PhD. The admiral sensed this in a psychic flash and pulled back he had poor control still. He was never going to get used to the change “OK everyone come on let’s get back to it the party is over. We have to finish this section and then we will get out of here. There is no class tomorrow so we will have the Parade of the Caisson tomorrow with Captain James Cook on interspecies governmental relations…. Someone was tapping on his shoulder getting his attention. She could have all of it. She whispered way too close for someone who did not prefer women but about perfect for him. He was in the latter camp. “We need you to speak tomorrow sir Captain Cook had a equipment malfunction over Hawaii and is delayed Sir. Pleeeease Sir?” With just enough breathiness that it made him jittery. He was an old perv. He was just that way. The lady in question was 100 years old however but, maybe it was still cradle robbing? He just had a thing for Afro’s in the natural state. It was distracting.
“Godddamnitalltohellwhatinthefuckdoyouwant?” This was a perfectly reasonable thing to say. He had just been asked to do the one thing he vowed to never do again. They wanted him to speak and air his opinions? This is the most dangerous thing you can do in society. He had no politics per se’ beyond one or two things. He was a professional and he would do his job as long as the checks kept coming. He was not a politician and he did not like politicians, of any stripe. What he had learned was ironclad. Never be honest or always be truthful. Pick one or the other was his personal philosophy. He always chose honesty when he needed to hide a truth. No one believed the truth. No one believed the truth because they were put off by it. He always thought back to when he was 12 or so when he got ribbed and harassed about masturbation. His uncle Gerry was kind of a cruel fuck and liked to torment him. He Gerry asked him if he was J.O’ing a dozen times a day or something. Yeshua being fully G-d, fully man had times where the fully G-d part was expressed to the extent that our human minds should be blown. I'll come at this subject from a round-about then direct approach. Since Yeshua was not a kabalistic 'wizard' having mastered a piece of paper with the divine Name on it as some have ridiculously charged, He was able to use His own power to tell Nathaniel that before coming to meet Him, he was observed by Yeshua, and knew him to be "a true son if Israel indeed in whom there is no guile" (paraphrased). 2023.06.04 01:09 ALionAWitchAWarlord Tracksmith Amateur Mile (London): smashing PB's and going to the pain cave

First, the boring bits: 22 y/o guy, run around 30-35 miles a week in this training block, and very much inexperienced both on the track and in short distance racing. PBs: 11:26 2 mile, 18:55 Parkrun, 65 10 mile, 1:28 HM after blowing up after 10 miles. All those races were run in the last 8 months.
In preparation for this event, I introduced far more distinctions in my training, making my easy days truly easy, my threshold days actually threshold, and my hard days hard, but not too often.
The race
First, the race. A mile on the track in South London, pretty non eventful or spectacular in that regard. Watching the earlier heats, I quickly realised people were going far faster than the seed times might have predicted, indicating people had maybe been sandbagging a little. I was in heat 7 of 17, and so I was fairly nervous to see the quality of my opponents. Sure enough, 15 tall club runners made their way to the start line for the briefing, great, so this was going to be fast too.
"5:25 alright for pacing yeah?" "everyone nods" yeah, no, that did not happen.
Gun goes off, I settle in about 7th in the second lane, trying not to get boxed in.
First lap, 73.
Sorry, I must have misread the clock. 73? Sod that. I noticed people in front of me start fading and so I started to make some aggressive moves on the second lap, rather than leave it all to the second half. Start the third lap in 5th, not sure of the split here, but the pace was still pretty healthy so I think it was around 2:31 when I crossed the line. Third lap, game time. Everyone begins to slow a little, but not massively, clearly saving something for that precious final lap. I pass one more guy on the back stretch, and now the front four are strung out over the back stretch. Pain is creeping into my legs, but my mind goes back to a Steve Magness book I had been listening to on the train here, about how to dial in and reassure yourself that this is what you trained for, and you can overcome it. I dug in. I hear the bell go and know this is it. The clock read 3:4x as we crossed the line. 300 to go. 200 to go. With my last bit of energy, I kick past 3rd place on the final bend, coming through to the home stretch. "Push" is the only word I can think of. Across the line, I look at the clock. 5:05? That can't be right, can it? But yes, the results flash up and I did run 5:05.
My race tactics going in had essentially been to get in a good position, match any moves and kick it down before someone got in a better position, which I executed perfectly. This is a long way from the inexperienced me who used to absolutely attack Parkrun from the start and just hold on and eventually fade poorly.
Training
My "easy" pace went from 4:35 to 4:50 which I found really beneficial both from an injury perspective, and just making it a bit easier to get myself out the door for a relaxed run. I noticed my resting heart rate plummet, and my aerobic engine just went through the roof.

Some of the key workouts in this training block: Fartlek session of 1:30 on, 2:00 on, 2:30 on, 3:00 on, 9:00 on. Each of these were separated by a 30 second float, except the last one, which was a 2:15 float. Paces: 3:35 per km for the ons, 4:00/4:10 per km for the offs. No static recovery at all, 7.06km in 27:16, 3:52 average including the warm up. This was a big confidence boost, and I ran it last Monday (29th of May) before the race today. Road, pretty mild conditions.
5 mile Club Cross Country race- finished second overall, first for my club out of 100 or so, May 21st. This was used as a chance to brush up on my tactics and just getting back into racing.
May 15th, 12* 400m on the track. This was when I started knowing the training was paying off, averaged 1:24 for this, with 60 seconds static recovery. All good, didn't feel like I was digging too deep except a little on the last lap. 8 mile easy run was directly before this, working a little on running hard on tired legs.
May 13th, 3k warm up, 2k VO2, 1 mile @ faster than 5k, 1.2k @ faster than 5k, 800 @ 5k, 400 @ 5k, 1k jog after each rep except after the 800m, where it was 400. This was quite early in the block, hence the long recovery. This felt just decent, not an absolute barn stormer or totally rubbish either.
Aside from this, my days were spent running 7-8k easy, and on Wednesdays running 15k at a moderate pace with my club mates. Pretty standard.
Reflections
The shift in easy runs was super helpful, allowing me to do every session to the best of my ability without having to dig too deep.
Threshold became an invaluable part of training, no wonder the Ingebrigtsens are so good.
The final reflection is just a big thank you to track smith for organising the event, I will definitely be back for more.
Where next?
I've got ASICS 10K coming up on the 3rd of July, which is my real A race for this season, and I've been eyeing up the Tracksmith Twilight 5000m in September as a late race to end the season nicely. My club also run a 2 mile handicap so I'll race one of those in hopes of lowering my 11:26 PB from last year (on the road)

2023.06.04 00:48 PandaHas My plan for June 9-11

Hi, I've been reading through other people's itineraries on this sub. I wanted some feedback on my plan for those days.
June 9
Leave and arrive at Yosemite by 9 am. Head to Mariposa grove and do the full 7 mile loop there. After that just some small exploring the valley, like tunnel view I suppose. Then head to my lodging for the night.
June 10
Big big day of hiking. Mist trail -> Panoramic Trail -> Glacier Point -> Back down with the 4-mile trail. Planning to leave early and be done by 5-6 pm and head back to lodging for the night.
June 11
Probably gonna be sore and tired, so just a day of driving through the valley and small walks. Kind of unsure what to do, would be open to some suggestions here.

Is this plan fine and works with any of the current closures in the valley? I'm open to changes and suggestions thank you :)

I've been playing Pot for years at this point between +R and Xrd so I know what I am getting in to and I'm used to it at this point.
New character comes out. Goldlewis Dickinson. I watch his character guide and decide I want to main him.

He lacks fast movement options
He has a big hurtbox
He has 1 reversal option
Has bad matchups with axl, zato, and ram.

I wanted to play him because he had a bunch of cool tech, did massive damage, and because he looked cool. Maining two big slow guys isn't really the greatest pool of characters and Pot kept getting worse while Goldlewis kept getting better so I drop Pot for Goldlewis.
More dlc characters come put.

Jack-O: The character that got me into guilty gear in the first place. Too complicated for me though so I pass.
Happy Chaos: I can't multitask and manage two resources well. Pass
Baiken: I play her for a bit but eventually get tired of how her gameplay felt. Pass.
Testament: My secondary +r main. Like them but never had a lot of success or fun with them. Pass.
Bridget: Her gameplay is cool but just didn't stick. Pass.
Sin: I liked him a lot when he came out but his pressure felt so risky and other characters did his job better. Pass.

Bedman? comes out. I decide I want to main him.

Intro

To preface this review, I just need to say that this is going to be a very, long read. Going through it myself just for the fun of it takes around 30 minutes — it's almost 7k words of text, including lyrical references. So for the best experience, listen to the album beforehand to understand what the hell I was thinking when I wrote this review, play the album while reading, and set a good amount of time aside.
And yes, this is 9 months late 😭 I'm not sorry — when I find an album review online it's always around a paragraph per song or even shorter. It makes sense from a journalistic perspective, but I want to do this album justice, hence taking 7 months to write out all my thoughts.
This shit is comprehensive and definitely overanalyzed, especially in Talk that Talk and Trouble. Each song review will compose of my commentary going over the song, noting the details I noticed through months of listening, then a conclusion. Also, mild swearing warning, I like implementing a touch of "French" when I'm very emotional about something. Anyway, onto the review!

One of the most perfect TWICE songs.
I think this is one of TWICE’s best-sounding title tracks. Warm modulated synths, a thrumming bass line, distant bells, shimmering synths — the purpose of this song is to be fun and my god is it excellent at it, like… Sana and Chaeyoung are saying knock-knock-knock and beep-beep-beep as if they’re some kind of car. So much fun.
Further along in the verse, Dahyun’s voice sounds so full and smooth with that layered harmony. Tzuyu coming with the Yes or Yes, Push & Pull, and 1 to 10 references — these are 5 years of song references. And Jeongyeon closes the pre-chorus accompanied by a rising synth to drop into chorus one. Jeongyeon slays pre-choruses.
The drums accelerate, the synths start blasting, and Jihyo opens to that party of a chorus with her godly vocals,

Now now now now now yeah~

During Sana's Talk that Talk~ lines there’s this gentle ascending synth bell that rings with the descending melody and it sounds absolutely gorgeous. And the choreography during that part of the chorus is so so so so fun: the talking hands bit, spelling L-O-V-E, concluding with the deullyeojweo ooh! Oh my Jihyo the deullyeojweo ooh…
Have I mentioned this song is fun?
Speeding through verse 2; Chaeyoung’s part with the cat ears popping in the music video is adorable; Momo her stretching her arms out looks so damn cool; and Dahyun with her replay part sounds so lovely — although I think it sonically sounds a touch random, it makes sense thematically.
And now for this pre-chorus. Mina and Jihyo leading into it sound great BUT JEONGYEON… Now, she is my ult bias, and this pre-chorus sounds almost identical to the first one, but the way she holds that final note, enunciating and holding that now~ for one more beat before the chorus drops sounds so perfect — the song teeters on a cliff edge. Jeongyeon slays pre-choruses.
Dropping into the second chorus and man, Jihyo powered through that first chorus, but the way Nayeon delivers it just hits different. She has this indescribable “pop” voice (I promise this wasn't on purpose) that stands out and shouts this is THE chorus. I think this is especially apparent in how both lead their choruses where Jihyo starts at 120% power while Nayeon waits until [Tell me] WHAT YOU WANT to full-send it. She also highlights “malhaebwa” in a similar way later in the chorus.
Another deullyeojweo ooh! Nayeon travels to Narnia, and Mina the engineer strikes again in this heavenly, underwater-esque bridge,

The simple words “I love you”
That’s all I wanna hear
Without hesitation, I’ll go up to you
I’ll make it simple
And just tell you I love you

The word “love” is said for the first time in the song. There’s a funky keyboard instrument behind Chaeyoung’s part. Jihyo, Chaeyoung, and Nayeon take the initiative in their lyrics, professing their love before closing the bridge.
And now for the pièce-de-résistance: this final double chorus is exceptional — 40 seconds of crack-laced euphoria; Jihyo switches up the chorus and the choreo, Dahyun chimes in with her fluttery “Talk that Talk”, Momo comes out of nowhere with “oh yeah it sounds so good!” — you’re damn right it does, and this is where the song SOARS.

Nayeon outright shouts “Tell me what you need” and then Jeongyeon sings the above lines in such an ethereal, warm way where the first line ascends while the second line descends, causing a lull in the song before the finale with Nayeon, finishing off the song with the final deullyeojweo ooh! What a party. What a song.

Lyrics and theme-wise, if this were to have been TWICE’s last comeback, they’ve once again built upon the theme they've been doing since debut: a Bildungsroman, a coming-of-age story.
This song’s chorus is honest yet simple; it asks the listener, in this case, the other half of the relationship, to be more upfront and open with their love (never be scared of love), that before the relationship can continue and flourish there has to be a foundation and commitment of love between each other.
TWICE debuted with a song about making your crush go ooh ahh. Years later, they started pondering “What is love?” and imagining their crush responding with “yes” when asking them out — and now concluding with the phrase “Talk that talk, [talk that] L-O-V-E”, being upfront with the relationship, wishing their partner to also be happy, to commit to them, to feel the love that they want to impart on them. From gawking like ooh-ahh to talking out your shared love like adults — to having a true relationship between (one and) two.
And can I just say before finishing off Talk that Talk's review that this is such a fun and repeatable song with many little intricacies hidden in the nonet’s vocals and the production. This is the third draft I’m writing about Talk that Talk and its original word count pretty much quadrupled.
Harkening back to TWICE’s roots by combining mature thinking with youthful character, an incredible ending to look forward to, and just simply being a club-banger that’s easy to listen to, TTT is an easy 10/10.

If there was one B-side to promote in a live clip, this was a solid choice.
Helmed by LDN Noise going headlong into the Western boy-group rock-band aesthetic, Queen of Hearts is a boom-boom-clap song through and through. The drums are very prominent throughout the song, only giving room to riffs of electric guitar in the chorus to drive and continue the momentum of the music.
And speaking of the chorus, vocal line each got a chorus to flex and they did not fuck around,

Cymbals crashing, drums booming, and 3MIX belting all just so sound so good.

These long, held-out notes performed by Jihyo and Nayeon are simply exquisite. Along with the shredding guitar, the drum set coming in full, and the interludes by Dahyun, Momo, and Chaeyoung, this is the part of the song that always, always, gives me goosebumps — it sounds so visceral, so energetic, so fun, so triumphant. Boom-boom-clap songs can be hit or miss with people, but there's no denying the payoff from the first part of the chorus to the second part is worth the wait.
The theme of the song so far has been kind of spread around the song. The chorus alludes to it with the line "And it’s all because of you." But Mina shows more sides of it in the second verse, especially with the phrase,

And now that I’m surrounded by all my girls
We be shining bright like diamonds and pearls

It sounds really lovely — in a very cheesy and affectionate kind of way, as it rightfully should — the song is about the girls and their fans. But the bridge is where the song indeed shows its colours

This is the TWICEiest shit ever.
Like Talk that Talk, Queen of Hearts also has a killer closer. The production already started to grow from the bridge, but now the guitarist finally went Super Saiyan and instead of supporting the drums, they both take the centrepiece in tandem.
Then finally, the closing moments of the song even manage to squeeze in some more sappiness.

Walking home from a K-pop festival with this song playing, felt like a Queen of Hearts

I love these types of rock songs with how grunge and head-bang-able they are, there is just a certain nostalgic and cheesy quality to them that feels so cozy. I don’t love putting them on repeat, because in this case, I do believe there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Perhaps more shredding, maybe a guitar solo to rock out to, or an accompaniment(!) of ad-libs from 3MIX to support Jihyo’s final chorus? A ONCE can dream of a truly bombastic rock song from TWICE. But then again that distracts from the core of what this song is: a fan song disguised as a rock song.
Queen of Hearts has so much sweetness in its lyrics and message that it's overflowing. The drums, guitar, and vocals can be as loud and intricate as they can, but the theme of this song is what makes it special from TWICE’s other rock songs — it’s a 9/10 for me.

After the first stanza, however, a bouncy Miami bass line emerges, revealing the true nature of the song: this is a classic summer bop! Especially in the first rap,

Syllables are pronounced in a relaxed nature, bars often starting with an "ah" sound, flirty lines in English — this rap features a production full of pop with R&B flourishes and, in my opinion, this is Chaeyoung’s bag. Also, the line "rainbow bubblegum" is so adorable and so Chaeyoung.

That chorus is pure pop with a Miami bass backing; you better be bopping your head to the melody, if not booty poppin' to the bassline. Chaeyoung loves rhyming in the first half of the chorus to enhance its catchiness and it's damn incredible: the “wanna”, “weonhae”, and “ppeonhae” all create these imperfect rhymes that continue momentum without feeling repetitive.
After the very Boy With Luv-sounding “ah yeah ah yeah, ah yeah ah yeah” comes an 8-bar split half and half between Chaeyoung and Momo. Coming from the chorus, the production completely cuts out for the first 2 bars. This adds tension; the song yearns to have that bass beat thumping again and all we have in the audio space in those 2 bars is Chaeyoung spittin' and she delivered.

The rap feels slick, effortless, and confident. Her diction remains sharp when enunciating each syllable but she doesn’t let the flow of her rap waver or build as her 4 bars go by, it’s just smooth consistency throughout. Even the lyrics possess an aura of laid-back collectedness that is just so her. The things Chaeyoung can do when given her pen.

This song is summer bliss distilled into 2:56. It’s dreamy, the raps are satisfying, and the ending is charming. I will say that although the second half of the song adds the stunning “spaceship” post-choruses and a floaty bridge with an incredible drumbeat drop into the final chorus, the raps of the song make it feel a bit front-loaded. And in an album stacked with awesome finishers, it feels more apparent.
With that said, it’s an 8/10 bop for me. This song is so easy to put on and it feels exactly what Chaeyoung would make if given the reins to produce a pop song all on her own. The lyrics are nonchalant but full of conviction, the wordplay is intricate, and the production playful but not too bombastic — it's just a nice vibe. Songs like Basics are the standard for good, simple, repeatable pop music and I’m happy that Chaeyoung got to test her pen in this genre.

One of the most enjoyable songs I’ve heard in a while.
There is an underlying tension within the first 4 bars of the song, Jihyo and Nayeon confidently open it to a nondescript array of synths and then the stanza ends, Momo announces “Let’s go”, the beat drops and it hits you: this is a club song.
Dahyun's relaxed delivery contrasted with Jeongyeon's staccato flow, the wobbly synth beat with sprinkle of house piano, Sana dramatically slowing down the song only for Tzuyu to build it back up until the chorus drops,

Nayeon opens it using a breathy tone, with vocal chops serving as harmonies
The blooming of the house piano takes centre stage and the song ascends into euphoria
A random drum roll capped off by a cymbal crash
Jeongyeon’s pronunciation of the word “trouble” almost being a growl
Chaeyoung slyly admitting “I like this trouble”

This chorus is perfect. Toronto’s residential market needs this song injected into its veins because god damn this song has SO much house in it. And then, ANOTHER KILLING PART: this rap fucking slaps.

During the first 2 bars, Chaeyoung is keeping it calm because that trip of a chorus just ended and the song needs a breather, but I don't think anyone expected her to SNAP this hard afterwards:

Below is the structure of her this portion of the rap, I’m not that well versed in this technical aspect of music theory but I digress, this is all in the span of around 5 seconds where it’s:

Now, 25/5 = 5 syllables per second isn’t groundbreaking, but goddamn it these 2 bars sound so nice — if there is one part in this album that I always repeat, it’s this. The addition of that first quadruplet for “cannot miss this” in the midst of the triplets sticks out and accelerates the flow of the rap while the following doublets and quadruplets destabilize and slow the rap down as the verse closes. And can I just point out:

Chaeyoung of course delivered the fuck out of her verse but THIS is what you get when you have a member not only write the words they’re saying but also the melody and flow with which they sing it, when that member knows the others so well that when they write a song they know how to make the group exceed. This is what you get when the artists you stan love doing artist shit.
And. AND. That's not all — with how much I mentioned I love a good outro to close a song, this outro slaps as well:

Like, come on, Nayeon’s imitating a police siren for crying out loud. What a song.

While writing Trouble's review I had this song on repeat for my whole subway commute and I must've been so distracting, just head-bopping and being so invested in enjoying a song

Need I say more, easy 9/10. The only reason I place Talk that Talk above Trouble is because of what that song represents but besides that, this is one of the best “international” sounds they’ve put out. Actually, I haven’t listened to Eyes wide open in a while but this song is up there with one of the most sonically pleasing pieces of work they’ve done.
Clubbing TWICE has always been a thing since TT was birthed in 2016, and has been a staple of their discography since 2019’s Fancy You and Feel Special mini albums, but Trouble unapologetically dives into and fits the house genre so well you’d think that this is TWICE’s bread and butter sound.
Trouble is Jihyo’s magnum opus. What a song.

I first thought this was just a good song, then I read the lyrics.
Gentle guitar plucks, shimmering synths, a distant keyboard in the right ear, in the left a glockenspiel, the melodic oohs from the members — this song is PRETTY.

The night that was unusually dark
Above this terrifying world, felt so lonely
The world has grown in the time of wandering
So hard to breathe

Mina and Chaeyoung open the song with how they feel lonely and that it's hard to breathe and now suddenly the song feels bittersweet — I was not expecting the song to be this emotional. Brave describes a situation where the singer is in a darker place in life and it isn't until another person gives them hope by calling them 'brave' that they find the drive to keep going.
Once the chorus hits, the melodies pick up, more guitars get added — there’s even an electric guitar hidden in the mix somewhere, and the song drops the emotional front to reveal a mid-tempo pop song to dance to while crying in the club. The song as a whole still carries this melancholy feeling, but now with the added support of this chorus acting as a light amongst the gloom.
Continuing on in the second verse there's this gorgeous, well-placed break in the song that just lets it settle after that chorus. Only a seasoned producer would risk this much empty space in a song and Slow Rabbit went to fill those shoes.
Back to the chorus, I'll take this moment to once again commend Slow Rabbit with the mixing of the song, because 4MIX undoubtedly sounds good in the chorus, and the interludes from Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Mina also sound really good, but the clear highlight of the choruses are these lines:

Oh na na na neon nal naige hae [Momo, then Tzuyu, then Momo]
On and on and on
Brave brave brave for ya [Dahyun, then Chaeyoung, then Mina]

Momo, Sana, and Tzuyu form this beautiful, surprisingly catchy, second half of the chorus accompanied by a guitar drop. It should not turn out this well with how conflicting the "na"s are with the guitar melody but it creates this gentle bopping ebb and flow that feels so lush and mellow.
Diving into the bridge reveals that the listener of the song is revealed not only capable of supporting the singer through direct words but also through their thoughts and dreams. As can be discerned, this can be a song interpreted to be about ONCEs, about how they push TWICE to be their best selves despite the breathless hardships they face. It's a very sweet and touching song.

Form of Therapy’s life motto revolves around the word “brave”. I don’t know where I got that from, but I remembered it right before watching his album reaction

I’m actually spoiled with the TWICE members’ easy-to-understand songwriting that when a song like this pops up where it's not written by a member and the thematic bits are mostly in Korean, I tend to put it aside in favour of the other songs on the album. And, especially for a song focusing on a theme like this where the English phrases don’t do the Korean lyrics enough justice, it does place a bit of a barrier on the listening experience, dropping it down to a 7/10 from an 8/10.
With that anecdote out of the way, this song is just such a vibe, man. I know that sounds super hippy to say but Brave is so mellow and smooth that I can’t help but sway a little when that chorus hits. And then I remember what the lyrics say and I tear up a bit on the inside. This song is so pure, raw, and full of heart — we need more songs like these where they just reminisce about life while putting up an upbeat front. Don't mind me just crying while dancing the night away.
With that said, this isn't the first time this theme has been sung by TWICE either, they've long trodden this path of supportive, confiding, up-lifting songs with Young & Wild, Rainbow, Queen, Go Hard, Depend on You, even this album's Queen of Hearts, and, of course, Feel Special. Brave just adds another on top of an already stacked lineup, unique with its mellow somberness.
Also now feels like a good time to get into my rating system:

7/10s are songs are ones that are simply good throughout or great songs with apparent flaws
8/10s are great songs with standout characteristics
9/10s are borderline perfect songs where I sometimes can't comprehend how great they are
And 10/10s are the best of an artist's discography, songs that encapsulate their ethos perfectly or expand upon them in a meaningful way

I SEE THE LIES
ON THE TIP OF YOUR TONGUE

Who the fuck pissed off Dubu this time??
It’s getting quite rare to see TWICE pull off brand new sounds because, with now 190 original songs under their belt, they’ve done so many genres and sub-genres varying from hyper pop, to bossa nova, to whatever 2020’s Go Hard is. So it’s surprising to see they’ve still got tricks up their sleeves and Gone is one of them.
The song starts with strings swinging back and forth and vocal chops dancing from ear to ear, teasing what’s yet to come. Jihyo enters the song with a whisper and the song sets its pace. A stagnant drum pad moves the song along and typical song progression would have Mina continue the build but — it doesn’t. The song simmers, adding a hint of high hat to the pot. And then, Sana and Tzuyu come on and surely the buildup must boil over right?
Silence, until…

I see the LIES on the top of your tongue

The strings emerge again on full blast, the simmer rolls to a boil, and the anger of the song is revealed,

All the fate I had towards you
Fades like a fog, gone, gone
Your flipping mind of doing this and that
I’m tired of it, it’s meaningless
In the beginning, it was hard to believe
With that, hatred increases

The singer is so scorned and burned from this relationship that they reminisce about all the effort they’ve put in since the beginning, but their “partner” is so unconcerned that they’ve just about had enough of the relationship altogether.
This has been Dahyun’s thing since 2020’s Bring It Back, 2021’s Cruel, 2022’s That’s all I’m saying, and even 2023's Don't Blame It On Me — emotionally charged breakup songs that make you feel as if she’s gone through a dozen bad relationships. Dispatch, do your job better, or don't.
Another highlight of the song is the post-chorus going into the bridge. This segment reiterates the structure from the first post-chorus — a barrage of drums supported by the rhythmic strumming of a bass guitar along with a consistent synth filling out the soundscape. But this time, it’s Dahyun and Chaeyoung on the rap:

I can’t stand it anymore [Dahyun]
My patience, invisible
I can’t find it, it’s all gone
Even if I try to turn back, it’s too late [Chaeyoung]
There’s no use anymore
It has left, it’s long gone
You, with flipping mind, you are out [Momo]
I know that you know what I’m talking about [Dahyun]
Nothing you could say that could turn this around

Continuing the disrespected theme of the song, Dahyun notes that she’s finally had enough with Chaeyoung adding that there’s no point salvaging what was once there for all of it is long gone. Momo and Dahyun round it off by telling the listener that there’s no point trying to reason with them or playing naive, they fucked up and there’s no coming back.
Can I just say, it's a bit of a shame that Chaeyoung’s rapping popped off in this album while Dahyun only has this one verse that she shares with Chaeyoung, but it just sounds so good how Dahyun eases in after the chorus with her light rapping tone transitioning into her singing. She even holds the “gone” in a little crescendo for some added pizzazz.
And, there’s no way I’m not going to talk about Momo’s vocals in this bridge. Damned if she only got 1 line to use it in, her lower register is incredible. She sounds so smooth singing in this tone. All of TWICE do in particular and there is nary a weak vocal performance in this album.
To close the song off, a wash of synths gets to have their shine in the spotlight, showered with Nayeon’s belting, signifying the dramatic and drawn-out conclusion of this partnership.

Actually, I think this song sounds like a mix between GOT7's Not By The Moon, BLACKPINK’s Love To Hate Me, and Dahyun’s Bring It Back. I don’t know where I got this thought came from, but it stuck

Going back to that point about the first post-chorus as a whole; songs that have the production continue unchanged into the post-chorus/2nd verse are very hit or miss for me — see TWICE's Don't Call Me Again for an overbearing example. The post-chorus going into the bridge contrasts Dahyun’s light tone nicely with the hard-hitting production, continuing the energy until it slowly fades into silence at the end of the bridge.
Back to the song as a whole, as much as TWICE has been experimenting with their sound for the past 4 years now, I’m happy they’re still finding new ways to explore what they’re capable of. And for that alone, even though I’m not a big fan of songs like these where they rely on sounding “big”, Dahyun’s lyricism and the thrill I receive every time I indulge myself in this song when I listen to it for the first time in a while elevates it to an 8/10. Keep on breaking hearts, Dubu.

This song is so beautiful. I’m totally not writing this song review, crying on the bus reminiscing about my childhood, while just having turned 21. I don’t know if these are happy or sad tears but this song is so beautiful either way.
Warm synths, muted piano, a gentle high hat, the younger members starting off the song — this has to be up there for one of the softest TWICE songs ever. And as it should, it’s one of the TWICEiest songs ever. And then Nayeon comes in,

Invincible superheroes, we wanted to be adults
To the higher, clearer world

The chords start swelling, the high hat keeps pace, and the harmonies come in,

Remember when we were kids
When we were kids, we didn’t know
If we could go back
I will love it even more
Remember when we were kids

Jihyo takes up the second half of the chorus as it drops, trading the strings for an almost R&B synth production — if choir R&B takes off, this song started it. The song relishes in this cacophony of warm sounds until returning to its sparse and peaceful verses.
This time, the hints of piano are louder, little twinkling synths begin to shimmer, the drum buildup comes and Jeongyeon drives the song straight into the chorus. No time for the strings to build like in Nayeon’s — this song loves its chorus so much.
And I'll just take this time to appreciate the amount of Jeongyeon vocals in this album. Her voice is so clean, stable, and projected — but also more tender and soft compared to the more pronounced tones of Nayeon and Jihyo.
The bridge comes in, repeating the phrase:

I wish that I could meet
Could meet the younger me

Giving the song time to rest, before building back up to the last chorus — this time led by Jihyo, completing the 3MIX trifecta. And interestingly enough, Chaeyoung follows up in the second half of the chorus, rather than another member of the vocal line. She really did pop off in this album.
As the last chorus begins to close, the percussion at its strongest, the harmonies on blast, the background vocals cranked up to their Sunday best, is the song going to end? Of course not! This is an album full of banger endings as if the songs don’t want to end, and When We Were Kids being the album closer very much indulges in that feeling.
After a brief refrain, accented by Nayeon’s high note with a touch of vibrato, the song almost dives back into a fourth chorus. Nayeon and Jeongyeon harmonize — a rare and heavenly moment. And the song repeats the bridge, reiterating that they want to meet their younger selves, this time with the lush chorus production before closing with silence, a few piano notes, and Tzuyu singing the last line of the song:

Oh, we were kids

Reflection, acceptance, hope. What a song.

For an album titled Between 1&2, I don’t think anything hits harder than finishing the song reviews, with this song in particular, during your 21st birthday

I wrote the first part of this review in November 2022. Then university, life, and other things got in the way of my headspace for me to feel confident about wrapping all of this up. In a way, I felt like I just didn’t want this review to end because of the joy that writing gives me — I didn’t want the happiness to end. And then it hit me, after watching a YouTuber rank animated movies and them placing Spirited Away at the top and explaining 'why' reminded me of just how important growing up is, and by extension this song.
This theme is important for both the rookie TWICE members in 2015 and the teenagers who would follow their journey and grow up with them, facing life’s obstacles along the way. Hardships that used to only involve family, crushes, and social media, evolve into work, commitments and all the struggles that adult life brings. Being a kid and enjoying the simple things in life is one of the most sought-after moments we want to relive because we took growing up for granted. The only thing we can do now is look back on ourselves with fondness and rose-tinted lenses.
TWICE’s original marketing was to resonate with people through their senses and their hearts. That was during their debut, and I think it still holds up today. In my opinion, touching people through their emotions is what TWICE does best and makes them one of K-pop’s all-time greats. It was never about having the best numbers — it was always about being the best idols. And to think that this journey of maturation and growth would occur from 2015 all the way to this song, being a fitting nod to TWICE’s 7th anniversary, I don’t think anyone at the company nor the group would ever imagine that they would get this far. It’s these nine women or none — 9/10.
This song honestly deserves a 10/10 with how much I noticed other people reminiscing their childhoods after I heard this song, it is such a widely-relatable message, but I am determined to limit myself to one 10/10 song per album and if I were to pick between TTT and WWWK, I'd give it to the one's that's more repeatable — Talk that Talk just has this electric energy about it.

Epilogue

And finally here is the end. If you made it in one sitting then I commend you, because I could not write this mess in one sitting. As alluded to, I started writing this album review sometime in October, after a series of edits the first draft was finished in March, and now here's the final draft in June.
I love this album. It got me through some important parts of my life, both good and bad, and it's just a wonderful listen throughout. Reliving this album again before finally completing the review has been an exciting journey. Brave hit me harder this time, after being overshadowed by the other gems of this album, and WWWK finally got me to tear up and not just be emotionally satisfied.
I feel like there's something for everyone on this album. From the exhilarating thrills of TTT to the anthemic euphoria of QoH, the clubbing dichotomy of Trouble and Brave to the blissful glee of Basics, and the sweet reminiscence of WWWK to the thundering anger that is Gone. Like Eyes wide open, I liken Between 1&2 to a pop music taste platter — there's such an eclectic mix of pop, music in this album that there's bound to be a song that someone will love, like, and dislike.
Is this album perfect? I don't think so, but it's close — it was certainly my 2022 AOTY. Was this review biased? Absolutely. I've been a fan since 2019 and with the themes in this album, I also feel like it was biased towards me as a ONCE. And how would I rank the album in TWICE's catalogue? It's honestly at the top, at least with EPs — I also felt that way towards Feel Special but then this album was birthed so I'm excited for TWICE's future.
Ready To Be was also a stunning album and Eyes wide open frankly also deserved the spotlight that Formula of Love received so I might hit those next but no promises; this album took long enough to bake.
As for the performances, I've only seen Twitter clips (no fancams to not spoil myself) and I am SO EXCITED to finally see them in July. QoH was as glorious as expected, Brave was a delightful surprise, and WWWK, while not being the concert closer everyone expected it to be, paired up nicely with Crazy Stupid Love. And of course the bombastic addition of the dance break to TTT. But, this is not a concert review, and this is where this album review ends.

I was sitting on the wall surrounding the Wyvern’s Base, looking out into the surrounding area. My eyes were on the sky, and I saw several Neame flying high up in a grid pattern, each doing their patrols. While we, the familiars on the wall, watched the sky, they watched the grounds for miles around. You’re probably wondering why they don’t watch the sky, since they’re already up there, but it’s harder to do than you think. Besides, they can see more of the ground from up there than we can from down here. From where I was sitting, yes sitting, not standing, the Neame looked like little dots. To be honest, I don’t think our real job is to watch the skies. I’m pretty sure it’s to act as a last line of defense against ground attacks, but I don’t know why they would bother lying about that.
One of the other familiars, a big hairy thing called a skeker, but not named, came over and sat beside me. He looked like a mountain goat crossed with a bulldog, and he was just as friendly. I put a hand on his back and started petting him, and he started to purr; which surprised me the first time it happened. I asked his owner if I could name it, but she felt uncomfortable with that, and refused.
That’s been a trend lately; Neame feeling uncomfortable around me. For the past four months, ever since the attack by the court mages near the capital and the team Suma traveled with died, I have noticed a lot of the Neame have been treating me differently. They’ve been treating Suma differently too, but she lies and says it doesn’t bother her.
“See anything, Jake?” Suma asked over our private connection. The connection was something only she and I could hear, and allowed us to talk without speaking aloud.
“Everything still looks clear. What about you?” I asked back, still petting the skeker.
“I see something to the east. About fifteen seconds.” She said. That’s one of the ways the Neame denote distance, by how long it would take them to fly from one point to another. If the distance is short enough, they’ll use wingspans instead. Every second is about twenty or thirty meters. “It is small and trying to hide. Can you see it?”
I looked up at the sun, and quickly found east, then looked about where I thought she was talking about. “No, I don’t see anything. Should I go take a look?”

“Sorry.” I stood up, accidentally waking the skeker too. “Well, at least I’m not the only sleepy-head.” Giving the skeker a pat on the head, I sent it back to its post. It was surprisingly smart, despite its goofy look.
“We need to get back to patrol.” Odens said, and glanced over to Suma. “We’ll give you a moment.” With that, the three of them flew off, leaving Suma and I alone on the wall.
“Are you still not sleeping well?” She asked. I shook my head. “It is more nightmares?”
I took a deep breath, “it’s always the same one.”
“Jake, you know if you ever want to talk about them, I will listen.”
“Thanks, I know. Would you mind summoning me real quick, so I can wake up?” I asked, and she agreed. She quickly performed a summoning spell, causing me to fade away for a moment, then reappear beside her. With that, the magic of the summoning restored my energy, waking me up.
“Jake… I have summoned you at least twice a day, for several days now. When was the last time you slept?”
“I don’t need to sleep if you keep summoning me.” I pointed out.
Suma sighed, “please try to sleep tonight. Going this long without it cannot be healthy.”
“I’ll be fine.”
“…Jake.”
“Fine. I’ll sleep tonight.”
“Thank you. I need to get back to patrol. Will you be okay?” The glittering sparkle that normally surrounds her, and every other Neame, was dulled.
“I’m awake now; go ahead.” I said. She flew away, towards the squad’s direction. Just in time too, because as soon as she was gone, I sat back down, already tired again, and with horrible cramps in my legs.
I fought through the pain, and the exhaustion, until our squad’s patrol was over. Suma flew to my room on base, then summoned me. I thanked her, and she left. Summoning my backpack, I pulled out some food my mum had put in for me, and had dinner while reading over her latest letter.
It started the way all of our letters do, with some details about our day, then any requests we may have for the other, but I’m usually the only one who has any, then that’s followed up with anything we feel the other needs to know. Apparently, in the four months I’ve been gone, the local police have put out an official arrest warrant for me, because I missed a court date for former Detective Lin’s stalking charge. That led to the charges against her being dropped, and the HMRC case against me getting reopened.
After writing a quick response to my mum’s letter, and pulling my phone out of my backpack, I sent my bag away with my letter in tow. This is how we have been communicating for the last several months. It’s slow, but it works. I told her to be careful with the bag, because she can’t touch it when I’m summoning it, or she might get pulled her too. She knows about what happened with Zachariah, and that it’s too dangerous for either of us to travel to the other right now.
Clicking my phone on, I turned on some music, and laid on my bed. I fought it, but eventually I did fall asleep. Just like every time before, I had that same nightmare.

My phone’s still playing music, its charge says sixty percent battery remaining. Only two hours have passed since I fell asleep. That’s enough, right? Yeah, for tonight… I thought.

Jake‘s POV
I was sitting on the wall surrounding the Wyvern’s Base, looking out into the surrounding area. My eyes were on the sky, and I saw several Neame flying high up in a grid pattern, each doing their patrols. While we, the familiars on the wall, watched the sky, they watched the grounds for miles around. You’re probably wondering why they don’t watch the sky, since they’re already up there, but it’s harder to do than you think. Besides, they can see more of the ground from up there than we can from down here. From where I was sitting, yes sitting, not standing, the Neame looked like little dots. To be honest, I don’t think our real job is to watch the skies. I’m pretty sure it’s to act as a last line of defense against ground attacks, but I don’t know why they would bother lying about that.
One of the other familiars, a big hairy thing called a skeker, but not named, came over and sat beside me. He looked like a mountain goat crossed with a bulldog, and he was just as friendly. I put a hand on his back and started petting him, and he started to purr; which surprised me the first time it happened. I asked his owner if I could name it, but she felt uncomfortable with that, and refused.
That’s been a trend lately; Neame feeling uncomfortable around me. For the past four months, ever since the attack by the court mages near the capital and the team Suma traveled with died, I have noticed a lot of the Neame have been treating me differently. They’ve been treating Suma differently too, but she lies and says it doesn’t bother her.
“See anything, Jake?” Suma asked over our private connection. The connection was something only she and I could hear, and allowed us to talk without speaking aloud.
“Everything still looks clear. What about you?” I asked back, still petting the skeker.
“I see something to the east. About fifteen seconds.” She said. That’s one of the ways the Neame denote distance, by how long it would take them to fly from one point to another. If the distance is short enough, they’ll use wingspans instead. Every second is about twenty or thirty meters. “It is small and trying to hide. Can you see it?”
I looked up at the sun, and quickly found east, then looked about where I thought she was talking about. “No, I don’t see anything. Should I go take a look?”
“No, I will alert the others.” She said, and ended the connection. I just met up with this couple whose dogs I'm gonna be walking for a bit while they're out of town, to meet them and the dogs. They're neighbors with a couple I regularly pet sit for - I've known the husband practically my whole life, so they know I'm trans. But I've been out and on T for over a decade, and legally male for almost a decade. I have visible facial hair.
The whole time I was at their place, the guy I was mainly talking to (they're a gay couple [!] [they're even a gay couple !]) kept referring to me as "she", or occasionally "they" - or sometimes correcting "she" to "they". But not once "he".
Someone else is gonna be watching the dogs while they're away (I'm just gonna be coming by to walk them), so he video called her while I was there so we could "meet" each other, and he was like "this is [name], she's- or, sorry, I don't know your pronouns...?" and I was like "he." (and I know he heard me, I said it very clearly and he was looking right at me and paying attention when I said it) - and then he just kept calling me specifically, only not the one exact pronoun I myself told him. so then the lady was also referring to me as "she".
It was just so, so weird and uncomfortable and humiliating and nauseating and I just didn't know how to respond - partly because I was just really thrown off by it, partly because I'm gonna be providing them a service that they're gonna be paying me for (and I need the money) so I want to keep things friendly (and he was being nice/polite otherwise), and I also don't want to add to the narrative that "trans people are rude and pushy and demanding and will freak out at you about pronouns".
I just don't really understand why this happened. The most logical explanation to me is that the people I sit for told them I'm trans - so I texted one of them like "hey, I have kind of an awkward question, did you tell your neighbor [name] that I'm trans ?" but she said she didn't, so I'm thinking either her husband did or maybe she's lying because she realized she shouldn't have done that, or maybe they just referred to me as "she" when telling their neighbors about me (they have slipped up on my pronouns a couple times in front of me, even within the last few months, so idk, it certainly seems possible that they refer to me as "she" when I'm not around). Otherwise, I just can't imagine why that would've happened. Like, he wouldn't have been like that to someone he perceived as cis - he wouldn't have just ignored me and kept calling me "she". He would've been embarrassed and corrected himself.
I'm just so tired of this. I shouldn't be having to deal with this still, after over a decade. I'm just a guy. A man. A regular dude. I just want to live my life like any other guy. People who didn't know me before my transition have literally zero excuse. None. No "WeLL I'm jUsT oLd-FaShIoNeD, iT's HaRd FoR Me, I'm NoT uSeD tO aLL tHiS nEw PrOnOuN StUfF" because they have only ever known me as a man, as my current legal name. There's no habit that they have to break. There is zero reason for them to struggle with it at all. The only thing that really clocks me is that I'm very small - and maybe I guess my hair is somewhat "long" at the moment compared to like a "traditional" men's haircut (but not even to my shoulders or anything). But I'm not the only small man in the world, and there are plenty of men whose hair is much longer than mine.
Do I really need to just move somewhere where no one knows me ? Do I really have to go completely stealth and start over from scratch just to be able to live as myself ? Can I just never escape this otherwise, because there would always be people who "know", who would tell other people, or refer to me as "she" ? Would I still be having to deal with this another decade from now ? Two decades ? The rest of my life ? Even after finishing every procedure I want done, will I be in some locker room with a beard and my D in full view while some "pronouns are just too hard for me I'm not a bigot or anything tho I'm totally an ally" chump is like "oh have you met my friend [deadname] ? She and I go way back !" ?
Is it really SO hard to just perceive and refer to me correctly even after a DECADE-long grace period ? A decade of being patient and understanding that they ~need time to adjust~ ? How much time do you need ? It's really actually so, so easy to just perceive me as a man, to just interact with me the same as you would interact with any other man. I look like a man. I sound like a man. I smell like a man. I am just, a man. Just enter that information into your brain. Simple. Easy. Done. What is so hard about it. It's been over a decade.
What do I need to do. Do I need to buzz all my hair off ? Get leg-lengthening surgery (with what money ???) ? Pretend to care about football ? Walk around like Popeye with my elbows out and fists all clenched like I'm gonna fight someone, going "HAR HAR HAR" and spitting on the ground ? Wear a big fake Johnny Bravo-type chin ? (my chin and jaw are already really masculine though ? That's always been the case, even before T - I used to get made fun of for having a masculine chin/jaw and nose ??)
I mean I'm gonna have to move soon anyway because I'm in Florida but I was primarily considering a place where a few relatives of mine live. But idk, maybe I do actually need to go stealth and start over somewhere where no one knows me.

The morning of October 17th 2019 was a cool and bright autumn day, two words rarely used to describe the treacherous Hanoi’s weather, when Lê Hải An arrived at his workplace, the Ministry of Education on 35 Đại Cồ Việt street, Hai Bà Trưng district, Hà Nội. Normally, he would have had a big breakfast at the office canteen then head off to his office at the second floor where he would spend the rest of his day trying to solve the numerous problems plaguing Vietnam’s education.
At 7:10 AM, someone spotted a figure falling from the 8th floor. There was a blood-curling smash; the figure was declared dead on impact. It wasn’t hard for people to identify the man.
In just a few hours, public media across Vietnam would declare that Vice Minister Lê Hải An had died. The reason?
He slipped and fell off the balcony.
The story I am about to tell you is not just a simple fall.
The story I am about to tell you sounds like something out of a conspiracy theory, the one spewed by tinfoil hat wearers on the street, the one peddled by shock websites and fringe extremist forums, the kind that would make you think it was a rejected Hollywood script and not real life. And I must admit, I have to work with secondary foreign sources with many being biased and some outright spewing baseless conspiracy theories. Many original sources had been removed or edited, forever lost into a memory hole resembling that of 1984. In trying to be faithful, I've removed a lot more "fantastical" elements that have no proof to be cross-checked; I will do my best to paint a complete picture of not only who Lê Hải An was, but the treacherous world around him, a nightmarish jungle of political infighting.
To those who don’t believe, I ask you to just give me the benefit of the doubt and remember this one thing:
“This is Vietnam.”
PART 1: The model teacher
In Vietnam, we have this saying: “Tôn sư trọng đạo” meaning “To worship your teachers and to respect your study.” A teacher was not simply a teacher; he/she was the paragon of society, the enlightener, the one who upheld all the virtues of society, who embodied such virtues, and who passed on such virtue to younger generations.
Lê Hải An was one such man.
Born in April 1st 1971 in Hà Nội, An was the son of Lê Hải Châu, a famous educator whose mathematics book was once the golden standard of Vietnamese mathematics education. In fact, if you were in Vietnamese highschool in the 90s to early 2000s, you would have used one of his books. For his contribution, Châu was awarded the title “The People’s Teacher,” a once highly prestigious prize reserved for the most devoted teacher. Given his family’s background, An was said to be set for life.
But An did not take the easy way. He challenged himself continuously, was handpicked as a government-sponsored student to study Mining and Geology at Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography. Even late in his career, he still pursued his passion for the mining industry, successfully defending a thesis on the application of neural networks in the oil industry at the Heriot-Watt University.
Given his background and training, Lê Hải An was made a professor at the Hanoi University of Mining and Geology. At first he was a teacher at the Petroleum department, but rose steadily through the rank. To his students, he was a knowledgeable yet compassionate teacher who never sought to exert his authority; to his colleagues, he was a man of honor, of dignity, representing the paragon of teachers thought to have been lost. Nobody complained when he was made the University’s principal; nobody complained when Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc appointed An to be the Vice Minister of the much troubled Ministry of Education.
Well, maybe not nobody.
PART 2: You have to go to Hà Giang and take the national exam
For every Vietnamese students, nothing struck the fear of God in them worse than the word "National Exam." Not as competitive as the Chinese Gaokao or the Korean Suneung, it is the stuff of nightmare that have made and broken life. Students competed for the sweet sweet spot at the Police Academy and Military Academy (It is in fact more difficult to become a cop or an army officer in Vietnam than to become a doctoteacheengineeIT technician); parents wait anxiously for their children's performance to show off to friends and families; educators wait for the top scores to make their annual achievement look good so they can attract better students to their high school.
Exam season rolled around, and the results were released by July 11th 2018. As soon as the scores came out, all of Vietnam was shocked.
Of all the 64 cities and provinces, Hà Giang scored the highest in the national exam, with the highest number of “Thủ Khoa” or “The top scorer.” This, to many, was a surprise: not only Hà Giang was the poorest province in all of Vietnam, it traditionally had high illiteracy rate, high dropout rate, low graduation rate, low university admission rate, and so on and so forth. The fact that during the same year Hà Giang had the highest rate of failure to graduate from high school also raised eyebrows.
And Hà Giang was not the only province. Sơn La and Hòa Bình, two other terrible performers, also scored suspiciously well, outmatching province such as Thanh Hóa-Nghệ An-Hà Tĩnh who have been known as "Đất Học" or "The land of the studious."
Immediately, people began to cry foul. There was a lot of anger: a lot of students who had worked their whole lives were in danger of losing their spots to some “irregularities.” A common saying began to emerge: “Em phải đến Hà Giang thi đại học” or “You have to go to Hà Giang and take the national exam.” Investigations were launched into the Ministry of Education just one day after the score was released.
Quick investigation revealed that this was not just some "irregularities" but a systematic scheme, raising scores for test-takers: some exam takers received a nine points out of a total of ten points boost for individual exam, and some had their total points raised by thirty points out of a total of forty. Not only that, the exam-takers who benefitted from this were some of the most powerful people in Vietnam. Take the case of Hà Giang: one of the person whose scores were raised was Triệu Ngọc Mai, daughter's of Triệu Tài Vinh, General Secretary of Hà Giang. The Triệu clan ruled Hà Giang as a fiefdom of their own, holding most important positions; they had strong ties with the Minister of Education Phùng Xuân Nhạ, a widely-hated and despised figures for his bare-faced corruption and mismanagement, and the President of Vietnam Trần Đại Quang. People were expecting the investigation would go to nowhere - afterall, who dared to incur the wrath of the President of Vietnam?
Then, out of nowhere, Trần Đại Quang died.
On September 21st 2018, the fit and healthy Trần Đại Quang suddenly passed away from “a rare and unknown virus which he contracted during his trips.”
No more explanation was given. One month later, on November 3rd 2018, Lê Hải An received Decision 1475/QĐ-TTg from Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc himself, making him the Vice Minister of Education and in charge of the National Examination scandal
PART 3: His final moment
For the next year, An worked with diligence, doing his best to hold the perpetrators accountable. By the numerous newspaper articles, it was clear he was the one leading the charge while his superior, Nhạ, kept a low profile and only appeared on the media every now and then to make some empty speech. He worked hard, showing up at his office early and having breakfast in the office’s canteen to save time, then immediately dived into work in his office on the second floor. His work yielded results: 16 bureaucrats were arrested, 222 exam takers were exposed, large sums of bribes were confiscated. To many, perhaps An included, it wasn’t enough. Everyone knew the big fish Nhạ was still out there, and everyone was itching to see him fall.
It was on the morning of October 17th 2019 when Lê Hải An arrived at his workplace, the Ministry of Education on 35 Đại Cồ Việt street, Hai Bà Trưng district, Hà Nội. We had little idea of what had happened on that day, but what we knew painted a very strange picture.
Normally, An would go straight to his office on the second floor, rarely having any reasons to go anywhere else. And, given the early hour, most other offices would be empty.
Yet, on that day, An seemed to have gone to the eighth floor. There was no record of what he was doing there or who he was meeting; the floor also had no camera. Photographs of the crime scene showed a table which supposedly An had sat - this table had an almost empty glass of cold tea, a cigarette pack, and an ashtray with ash in it. Another table was photographed with an old red gym bag and a nylon bag containing non-descript items; next to this table was a chair with another plastic bag containing non-descript items on it. All the tables were seated next to a balcony which was about 80 centimeters tall. An was described to be 180 centimeters tall, and when his body was discovered it was lying parallel to the building from which he fell from next to a tree but seemingly did not hit it.
Given all the evidence, by 8:30 AM it was concluded that An slipped and fell. No more investigation was made
PART 4: The truth won’t set you free
Of course, the conclusion did not satisfy anybody.
On one hand, there is very low trust for the Vietnamese police who have shown their ineptitude and willingness to fake evidence time and time again. With miscarriage of justice cases such as Hồ Duy Hải and Huỳnh Văn Nén fresh in every one’s mind, the police’s conclusion lost even more credits. The fact that the police quickly concluded An slipped and fell only at most two hours after they were notified of the accident and refused to investigate any further reek of a cover-up.
But, even with the benefit of doubt for the police, the idea of An slipping and falling was deemed unthinkable to many. For one thing, people did not understand why An went to the eighth floor when his office was on the second floor. If he was there on business, what business could it be at such an early hour (government offices in Vietnam often begin work at 8:00 AM if not 9:00 AM.) If he was there to meet someone, who was that someone and why was he not investigated? No investigation was made into his phone or email either.
Then there was the balcony.
The balcony was described by some to be eighty centimeter tall, which would make slipping a feasible case for someone 1.8 meter tall like An. However, images from the crime scene show a police man standing next to the balcony and the balcony reaching his chest. Given that the minimum height to be accepted to the police academy is 1.64 meters, we are looking at a 1.2 meter tall balcony at the very least. It will be very hard to slip and fall over, unless someone was leaning over it. But why would anybody do such a thing? Some suggested he was drunk and tired and this could have been the case, but with no toxicology report done on him there was no way to make sure.
Some commentators also pointed out that even if An leaned out and fell, his body would have landed in a perpendicular angle with the building block he was falling out from. Yet, in the crime scene image, he was shown lying parallel to the building, as if he had rolled over on his side. There were no obstacles on the way down so his falling body could not have hit anything. The only thing in his way was a tree, but the branches were very frail and images did not show any conclusive evidence that he hit the tree on his way down.
So, if he did not slip and fall, what else could have happened?
Suicide was also suggested and has remained a strong contender. It must be remembered that An was an important man being surrounded by enemies. He had a very heavy burden to shoulder and had to endure political shenanigans from all sides. Perhaps, the pressure had broken the hitherto earnest teacher who had not had a taste for the wild political arena. So, he decided to go to the eighth floor, climbed over it (which could have required him to drape over the balcony, explaining why his body was found parallel to the building) then let himself fall.
Of course, some don’t agree with the idea. They pointed out he was a very happy, very respected man with a long and promising career, a loving family, and a dedication towards a higher calling. Men like him, they said, rarely killed themselves. While this could be true, this “proof” is very weak as many successful men have committed suicide. Perhaps, he was only showing himself to be happy; perhaps there was something else going on with his life that we would never know.
Finally, and perhaps the most pervasive, is the idea An was killed. Of course, given that this theory was born out of circumstantial evidence not any real evidence, this belongs more to the conspiracy theory bin. The temptation was there: An was leading the crusade against some very powerful individual, many of whom had both the power and desire to get rid of someone like An. If the former President himself could die so mysteriously while in office, who was to say An was safe? The police’s quick conclusion and refusal to investigate any further as well as the image of a supposedly official letter from his wife begging for police protection (now scrubbed off the internet) only added more flame to the fire.
So, assuming An was killed, who had killed him?
The obvious answer to many would be Nhạ: he was An’s boss, he was investigated by An, he could’ve lost his power and friends and influence. He wanted An dead, had the means to do so, and was therefore the prime suspect. The many clans whose children’s road to power An had dashed such as the Triệu clan also had axes to grind with An.
However, there was another suspect.
Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc, the man who had appointed An to the position himself.
Before this all happened, Phúc was rumored to be in a power struggle with President Trần Đại Quang and the Ministry of Public Security. After Quang’s death in 2018, Phúc was trying to court Quang’s Department of Public Security to his side. The new head of this Department was Tô Lâm (The man who was videoed eating at Salt Bae’s place in London while Vietnam was under lockdown and starving.) Perhaps, as a gesture of peace, Phúc sold out his subordinate as an “apology.”
Ultimately, given that these theories are born out of the lack of evidence and the coincidence, we cannot accept them as “reasonable.”
PART 5: Farewell
On the 21st of October 2019, Lê Hải An’s funeral was held. It was a simple affair and yet it attracted thousands of mourners, ranging from the Vietnamese elites to his students. To many, the loss of An was a great loss to this world. Even without his work to clean up the Ministry of Education, he was an honest, hard-working, humble man who had always tried his best to live up to the image of the model teacher that had become so rare in modern Vietnam. The fact that such a good man had to die so early only rubbed more salt into the open wound.
But time will fly. Life will move on, heals will wound, stories will be forgotten, people will forget. Lê Hải An will one day fade into obscurity, and with him the question:
“What happened to Lê Hải An on October 17th 2019?”
