2023.06.04 21:30 tango2Can GV70, GV60, X3?

Hi all,
I started my search with Tesla Model Y, but couldn't stand the drive in Chicago's pot-ridden roads.
I tried GV60, and was a much nicer ride. Though, I'm worried about its shorter range, and resale value. It is also 10K more...
GV 70 looked interesting. Doesn't do the switch to electric, but X3 and GV70 are the front runners for me for non-electric cars. The GV70 availability is an issue though.
Anyway, what would you do? GV60, GV70, or X3?

2023.06.04 20:43 gotchacoverd How to approach fixing my 50's Chicago code ranch house.

So my house is in the Chicago suburbs (Chicago code) and these pictures are some of the stuff I'm dealing with. The original conduit is crimp connected and the old cloth wires are rotting out inside the conduit. I have floating neutrals all over, bad grounds. Lights that are still on with the breaker off, etc. It's a mess.
The main panel is a 100 amp pressmatic. We have 240v circuits for the electric dryer, the the electric range, the "tool house"(shed) and a 60a for the newer subpannel.
My goal is to redo pretty much everything I can do myself before bringing in a pro to handle whatever I can't. I'm completely comfortable replacing conduit, running new lines and working in the panels.
I need some help figuring out what the right way to do all this is, and I can get started fixing everything circuit by circuit.

2023.06.04 19:17 rollupnow23 gas lens vs gas saver lens

What the hell is the deal here? I need antacids shopping for this stuff because my stomach curled up like a armadillo.
I see the gas lens has a screen inside of a brass or copper tube.
The gas saver lens is like a screen inside of the cup.

I would imagine the gas saver lens from CK might do a slightly better job diffusing the gas then the gas lens but also be more fragile. I bought the gas saver lens (screen in the cup) on intuition, but I don't know which is better or the pros and cons.

https://www.weldingcity.com/images/detailed/8/TIG_Welding_Torch_45V64S_Large_GasLens_2-pk.jpg
https://www.ck-worldwide.com/files/ck-worldwide/products/gas-saver-kids/large-diameter-gas-saver-titanium.jpg

What is the difference?
I repaired my first tig welder (dynasty 200, lots of work) and I want to get a torch now. I ordered a CK flex lock valve torch, the denise adapter and a 300Amp denise grounding cable BTW).
I just want to learn tig, I spent over a year trying to get the dynasty running in my spare time, I replaced the rectifier, the IGBTs, did a few board repairs (involving milling and refilling burned area with epoxy) and replaced alot of semi conductors, did the conformal coat, spent too much money on board cleaning, polished the connectors, greased the connectors, ultrasonic the shit out of every component, cleaned every thing (including the chokes and stuff) and baked everything so its bone dry, and I added a solid metal grounding connector for the grounding strap because miller wedged in a braid covered with solder under a ground screw for the main ground which is a NO NO because of solder creep, you don't want solder in your ground point IMO, its unstable ground impedance that way.
I have experience with industrial scientific electronics (semi conductor and government orders/aviation ) but am not a welder. Its nice I know how to do things for low impedance and high reliability so dont worry and its back in the box now that is well grounded with clean screws and threads and grease and torque. . even silver plated the bus bars with electrical rated stuff (not jewellery )

2023.06.04 19:05 GSA62 Local 19 Recruitment

Just got my email from NEIEP regarding their most recent recruitment in the Seattle area, placed 123 in the applicant pool.
I have trades experience as a welder, though no structural certification.
I've also done HVAC ductwork fabrication and installation for the local SMW union and presently work as a HVACCommercial Kitchen tech, so I deal with electricity every day, though i only have my electrical trainee card so far.
Also prior military and have some college, didn't bring my transcripts to the interview.
I also have a bunch of relevant certs, OSHA 30, Fork/Boomlift, First Aid and an expired non-structural welding cert.
What can I do to improve my position next go around?
What are the odds I'm accepted within the next 2 years at position 123?
Thanks for any insight.

2023.06.04 05:46 HereForThePengoos Illinois ADA question

Hello, I am a condominium resident (owner) in the city of Chicago. I am also covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act thanks in part to severe multiple-disc herniation. I'm hoping someone may be able to answer my question as I haven't had much luck through online searches.
I recently purchased an electric scooter (not an electric wheelchair-type scooter, but a commuter one) to help me get around the city as walking for long distances is not viable due to my health issues. This is my only mode of transportation. The building rules and regulations state that residents are not allowed to take, specifically, "bicycles or tricycles" out of the building's front lobby, if they choose to keep it within their unit instead of paying the building to utilize a bike slip in the garage. The garage is in the building's basement, which is only pedestrian-accessable via a staircase. Additionally, you CAN also purchase a garage door opener to allow for entrance/exit via the vehicle ramp. Due to the fact I cannot afford this, as well as the fact I have trouble getting up and down stairs during a not-so-insignificant number of days, I have chosen to keep my scooter in my unit instead. Now although the rules and regulations state "bicycles/tricycles", I have been approached by 2 different people telling me that I cannot take my scooter out through the front door which the front elevator feeds out to at ground level, and am expected to use the back elevator that feeds out about a quarter-floor higher, and pick up my 65lb scooter to carry it out the back door which feeds out into the alley via a set of stairs, which I cannot do without exacerbating my existing condition and risking injuring myself further.
So basically, what I am asking is, do I have a right to ask for, and expect cooperation from, the board regarding a "reasonable change in the rules" to allow me to take my scooter into and out of the front lobby through the ADA? Thank you in advance!

2023.06.04 03:02 anonbombs Learned how to weld today

For those who have most of your gaps filled, spending 200 bucks on some basic welding equipment may be something to consider, as I would definitely consider this a force multiplier.
That's basically all you need to get started. These little flux welders for $99 from Harbor Freight are such a steal I actually bought two of them.
Small investment for a nice skill to learn in your own garage

2023.06.04 02:23 AMPenguin New releases in April/May 2023

I missed doing this last month, so I've consolidated two into one for a list of some of the best releases that caught my eyes and ears in April and May 2023. It's not a comprehensive account of all notable new albums, but each one comes recommended (by me, at least).
I'd be really interested to hear what you think of them, or what other recent new releases you've been enjoying.
Here's the previous edition of this thread: New releases in March 2023
Alfa Mist - Variables (ANTI-) UK (London)
The Alfa Mist universe expands outwards from its jazz piano/hip-hop production roots to take in old school swing, African rhythms, R&B vocals and Alfa's own slyly subversive, languid MCing, all while embracing a slightly edgier overall sound than his previous albums. I think this is his best yet.
FFO: Madlib; Tom Misch; Moses Boyd... Links: Borderline, title track, Full album
* * *
Greg Foat & Art Themen - Off-Piste (Athens of the North) UK
"Smooth" needn't be a dirty word. The latest outing for Foat and Themen's brand of library-jazz mixes the icy ambience of a Swiss mountainside with the funky sophistication of the après-ski chalet party. In lesser hands, it might have felt insubstantial, but the keyboardist is painstaking in his evocation of the perfect atmosphere, and the saxophonist rides it like an eagle coasting on the wind.
FFO: Library music; drinking cocktails in the bath Links: Fresh Snow, [TITLE](URL), Full album
* * *
KVL - Volume 2 (Astral Spirits) USA (Chicago)
Low key piano/keyboard trio pieces with electronic-inspired beats and wobbly chords. It's kind of hip-hoppy, but the grooves are avant-garde and exciting and unlike a lot of nu jazz in that vein, this wouldn't ever work as background music.
FFO: Ahmad Jamal doing jazz beats for studying Links: Absent Crash, Full album
* * *
Praed - Kaf Afrit (Akuphone) Switzerland/Lebanon
I wasn't familiar with Praed before hearing this album and it blew me away on first listen. Blending Arabic electro-pop with free jazz should be an impossible task, but these guys make it sound like the most natural thing in the world. Kaf Afrit is ominously psychedelic, with frantic, squealing reeds writhing around intense, looping, knife-edge samples over a bed of pumping basslines and motorik drum rhythms.
FFO: Melt Yourself Down; Sons of Kemet; Arabic jazz Links: Djinn Dance, Full album
* * *
Asher Gamedze - Turbulence and Pulse (International Anthem) South Africa
Gamedze combines complex rhythms with the kind of free jazz that sounds like a series of slow, deep breaths. One to ponder the universe to.
FFO: Ayler, Shepp, et al Links: Turbulence's Pulse, Wynter Time, Full album
* * *
EABS & Jaubi - In Search of a Better Tomorrow (Astigmatic) Poland & Pakistan
Another collaboration between Polish musician Latarnik (this time with his band EABS, one of the most popular on the modern Polish scene) and Pakistani jazz/Hindustani classical fusioneers Jaubi - a prospect which should excite anyone who has heard their previous work together with Tenderlonious.
FFO: Modern spiritual jazz with notes of hip-hop... Links: Strange Love, Sun, Full album
* * *
Peter Brötzmann, Majid Bekkas & Hamid Drake - Catching Ghosts (ACT) Germany/Morocco/USA
Following 2020's The Catch of a Ghost, this is another outing for Brötzmann, Drake and a Moroccan guembri player. Last time it was Maâlem Mokhtar Gania; this time it's Bekkas, whose hypnotic basslines and powerful vocals are the defining feature of this music - no mean feat when you have the Machine Gun himself in your band.
FFO: Ahmed Abdul-Malik and any other mix of jazz and traditional African music Links: Mawama, Full album
* * *
Michael Formanek Elusion Quartet - As Things Do (Intakt) USA/Canada
Anyone who follows contemporary US jazz will know Michael Formanek's name - perhaps from his work with Tim Berne, or his membership of the power-trio Thumbscrew with Mary Halvorson and Tomas Fujiwara, or from his own Ensemble Kolossus big band. His newest album is the second with the Elusion Quartet, supported by three of the most formidable talents in the New York scene - Tony Malaby on sax, Kris Davis on piano and Ches Smith on drums. Their music harks back to the modal jazz of the mid-1960s, all ambiguous harmonies and breathtaking musicianship (not least from Formanek himself).
FFO: McCoy Tyner; Wayne Shorter; Joe Henderson; bass solos Links: Full album - check out Rewind or Rockaway Beach.
* * *
Some other recs: * Kira Linn - Illusion - Electro trip-hop fusion jazz from Germany, for baritone sax fans. * Flock - In C - A fresh new album from the London supergroup featuring an epic performance of Terry Riley's magnum opus. * Brandee Younger – Brand New Life - A funky-soul-hip hop setting for the modern-day queen of jazz harp. * Chico Pinheiro & Romero Lubambo - Two Brothers - Brazillian guitar duo with killer chops and a classic sound whether they're playing Jobim or Eilish. * Terese Lien Evenstad - Movement - Blue Note-style modern post-bop from Sweden, led by violin. * The End - Why Do You Mourn - Doomy jazz-rock from Mats Gustafsson of Fire! Orchestra. * Skarbø Skulekorps - Innesko - The ecclectic Norwegian pop-jazz provocateurs with an unclassifiable-yet-infectious blend of electronics, marching rhythms and twinkly guitars. * Gretchen Parlato & Lionel Loueke - Lean In - Stunning West African guitar meets one of the most popular modern jazz singers. * Stian Westerhus & Teun Verbruggen - Earthbound Monochrome - Norwegian/Belgian duo playing agitated free improv on electric guitar, drums and electronics. * Artemis - In Real Time - All-female post-bop supergroup on Blue Note.
What did you think of these albums? Are there any others you think I should have mentioned? What upcoming releases are you looking forward to?

2023.06.03 05:16 philosoph321 More new Dylan concert video

More new Dylan concert video
I uploaded another new concert clip on YT today in a series featuring live performances of tracks from “Time Out of Mind.” It’s a typically high-octane rendition of “Cold Irons Bound” from Chicago in 2001.
In between his impassioned vocals on the verses, Dylan lightens things up a bit, clearly having fun striking some “rock star” poses with his electric guitar.

2023.06.03 04:48 tuckoB What trade to apply for.

Good day group members, I have been working as an electric motor repair tech for the past 4 years in a small shop in bc. I don’t do rewinding of motors but I do everything else that’s related to servicing motors, pumps, welders, and generators. I’ve been wanting to get registered and possibly challenge a red seal ticket but I am not sure as to what trade would cover the stuff I am currently doing. If anyone has any advice that will help me move into the right direction I’d really appreciate it.

2023.06.03 03:38 ElectricOne55 Stay in Athens GA or move to a bigger city(Chicago/Atlanta)?

I orininally lived in Augusta, GA and moved to Athens for a role at a university that paid 55k. The role offered pto, pension, and tuition assistance though. However, rents in the area start at 1500 and housing is scarce and is mainly intended for college students. I'm in my 30s and wonder if it's even feasible to stay in Athens long term? With my current salary, I'm only saving 700 to 1000 a month as well, and that's with only buying food, rent, electricity, and no fun purchases.
My other options were a bigger city like Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, or Charlotte. But, then I would be even farther from family in Augusta than Athens. A second option is to live with family in Augusta, and buy a house there because housing is cheaper there. However, there's almost no dating options there and not much to do.
I was recently offered a remote role for 90k, but I'm worried if I lose that role and get stuck in Augusta then I'll either have to get another remote role or get stuck with a 30 to 50k IT role, since salaries are lower there.
The role is close to the Chicago area, but I would be far from family. I also don't know if I could handle the cold since I'm used to hot, humid weather. However, it may be a better experience than what I'm used to as well.
Should I
  1. stay at the 55k uni role
  2. Take the remote role and move back in with family in Augusta?
  3. Take the remote role and move to a Chicago

2023.06.02 03:40 lokiparo Should I be afraid for my family?

Hi all,
Looking for advice about some electrical sketchiness in the apartment I'm renting, unsure how alarmed I should be or what steps i should take. I'm a mom to a six month old baby and a 2 year old and frankly afraid when I go to sleep at night that an electrical fire will start. Also, as a Union member I generally don't like to ask skilled tradespeople for free advice, but I'm kinda freaking out over here.
I live in a 3 bedroom apartment on the second floor of a 3 flat in Chicago, anyone who is familiar with Chicago can probably close their eyes and picture the place. It's about a hundred years old and not well maintained or updated; landlord lives out of state and employs a sort of annoying real-estate-bro-ish management company to look after the place and deal with tenants and they don't seem to be taking any of this seriously.
Since moving in, I've noticed:
-smoking and melting of a couple of the plastic torches on the large (ludicrous) candelabra-style chandelier in the kitchen. seemed to resolve when I removed all the tungsten bulbs and replaced them with LEDs , and not putting any bulbs in the torches that were damaged. Landlord literally ignored me when I called about this in a panic.
-several very loose outlets. Also there are so few outlets in this apartment that we end up having to run extension cords more than I'd like to.
-another (ludicrous) chandelier in the bathroom sometimes doesnt turn on when you flip the switch. The outlets in the room (on the same fuse) still work when this happens. It's a 6-bulb fixture and they all go out so its not the bulbs. It goes back on without anyone touching the fuse box.
-Same in the bedroom across from that bathroom-- currently the fixture (a ceiling fan with a light) doesn't work. the outlets in the room still work.
-several lights in the place dim and flicker randomly.
-It's hot now this week, and I'm scared to plug in air conditioners, could that cause even more problems?
I've bugged the property manager so much about this stuff, all he has done so far is drop off more smoke detectors. I'm thinking of calling the city but I only want to do that if I have no choice because it could just cause tons more problems for me.
For those of you who want to say just move-- we want to / we are trying. It's hard out here y'all in a major city with two babies and currently one income. I don't even have time to wash my hair let alone find a new place to live. But if I can't get any answers/ people think this sounds dangerous I can take the kids and go to my mom's out of state while it gets resolved.
Is any of this scary scary or just old house stuff? what would you do if you were me? Thanks in advance.

2023.06.02 02:45 gabsteriinalol I have ~$30k in a 529 plan. Should I keep it there or take it out?

I’m 23 years old and as the title says, I have just under $30k in a 529 plan. My mom has been putting money into it since the day I was born basically.
I am super grateful and privileged to have access to a higher education, however, I don’t think I’ll ever go back to school (or at least be a taking the minimum of 6 credits needed to use the funds). I have an associates degree for liberal arts (psychology) from a community college for the record.
So I have a few ideas on how to use the money and I would like anyone’s input:
  1. Invest somehow - I’m a total newbie and don’t know anything about investing or where to start. The most money I’ve ever had at one time is $7k so I have no idea how to deal with larger amounts of money. But if there’s a podcast or anything that would be helpful for this situation please let me know
  2. Use it for a down payment on a house - I just re signed a 12 month lease for my apartment so I am planning on budgeting over the next year in order to save up for a house potentially. I have my own business and it is impossible to run it out of my one bedroom. Rent for a 2bed in my area would cost the same as a mortgage for a $350k house, so this could be a good choice from a business standpoint
  3. Start a new business - I’m an entrepreneur at heart and would love to own my own business as a career. My current business is just a hobby and isn’t sustainable on its’ own (I sell rocks and minerals). I’ve created a business model where I would buy a sprinter van and put dog treadmills (motion powered, not electric) and run people’s dogs for them. I live in Chicago and know many people who would use this service, especially in the winter! The problem is is that the start up costs will be way over $30k but I truly believe in this business model.
  4. DO NOT TAKE THE MONEY OUT- I’m only 23 and there could be a chance that I go back to school. If I were to take out the money, the gov would take 10% of the money plus federal income taxes. Right now I am a behavioral therapist for autistic children making under $35k after taxes, however, I’m not looking to further my career in this field
Edit: Thanks everyone for all the input. I think I’ll roll it over to a Roth IRA next year. I had no idea that was possible
Edit 2: The amount of people in my DMs telling me to invest in crypto is super weird. 4 messages now from separate accounts but no one has said anything about crypto in the comments LOL. Also, I want to say thank you again to the people who have given genuine advice because I’m trying to navigate being an adult and stuff now. I hope everyone has a good night
Edit 3: Guys I know I’m young and have no idea what I’m doing but can you please stop sending hurtful DMs. I didn’t realize people would be calling me an immature idiot who should just become a hooker. Please seek help if you feel the need to say those things to someone who is just looking for financial advice
